A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

OPEN THREAD: Green Tail Shiner
I'm hopeful AP will favor us with a link to the clip. Two clips, now, actually.
If you didn't hear them . . . I'm sorry, I'm not even sure I have the vocabulary to describe what I heard.
All I can say is -- you have absolutely got to love The Ticket. It will admit of no other emotion. Even when one of its stalwarts is apparently on the edge of sheer naked lunacy.
Open Thread Question to Ignore: What do Mike's speculations about green tail shiner tell us about the future of American media?
Huh?

I thought we'd get more comments of Anonymous's general drift. You know, I was beginning to wonder if I had hallucinated the whole thing. Mrs. Plainsman's buffalo gizzard pie was a little . . . off that evening.
Thankfully, AP has provided indisputable aural proof that this segment indeed aired, for which much thanks to him and The (Incomparable) Unticket.
That's a link the Nation needs to pursue. It is of the utmost importance to the future of The Ticket, and electronic broadcasting in general.
I finally heard it on the e-brake this morning. I've been of 2 opinions lately: 1) That Rhyner is going scorched-Earth and doesn't care anymore B) Everyone on The Hardline is stoned at least 40% of the time. This one clip reinforced both of those opinions. It's hilarious gold and I love that kind of stuff, but taken in the context of concerns over the past year or so about The Hardline (Rhyner's waning interest at times; Rhyner's confusion and addle-headedness at times; questions about Corby and Danny's roles and their place in the long-term plan; etc.), it makes me worry about the future of the program.
ReplyDeleteOh, and as for your 'open thread' question: Huh?
ReplyDeleteI have to say that both segments, but especially the follow up one, are bizarre. It really does leave you to wonder about what the HL is going to sound like in the not too distant future. Maybe all of the buzzing over Rhyner and February isn't so far fetched after all? He sounds more and more like Greggo did towards the end.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are crazy. It was just something funny. Relating that to the long term plans of the show is dumb.
ReplyDeleteThe vibe I get is that we get more and more stuff like this out of Mike because he's in a good place right now. Something that he probably wasn't in from 2000-whenever Greggo left.
Frankie, a hearty MTC welcome from the Nation.
ReplyDelete(1) Yes, we are crazy, which is a very great advantage when interrelating with an unhinged cultural phenomenon like The Ticket.
(2) My text is mostly tongue-in-check, as Green Tail Shiner is unlikely to have a profound impact on commercial communications.
(3) But not entirely, because sometime in the next several years -- I don't think it will happen in February -- Mike Rhyner will retire from The Ticket, if not from broadcasting entirely, for one reason or another. And that will be a big damned domino to tumble on the Ticket table, with impact up and down the broadcast day (except the Musers, I think). And with a seismic shift in the station's lineup, the ratings monster that is The Ticket will tremble at least a little, and probably more than a little (especially if Mike decamps for another station -- his fans will have legs that Greggo's never had). At that time we will be reminded that The Ticket's dominance is by no means inevitable, and its decline would indeed be a big deal hereabouts.
(4) However, in general, I do agree with you. Mike is fine. In fact, he sounds somewhat re-energized in 2011. As long as I've been listening -- 2004 -- Mike's attention is sometimes diverted by some distant recollection, and it emerges as an apparently disconnected utterance. One thinks of his enthusiastic callout to Danny as "Eddie!" and there are many other examples. I don't think the guy is losing it, and I've come to think that while he loathes the Cumulo-Ticket Overlords, he's not interested in retiring and he hasn't even lost interest in the show.
(5) But of all those instances, Green Tail Shiner stands alone as a superb middle-aged white-male dream-state disclosure, perhaps the truest look we will ever have as to What's On Mike's Mind.
I would agree w/ Plainsman that this is just proof of Mike & the HL in general just being more relaxed. It is alot easier to perform as a group, and relax in general when everyone gets along.
ReplyDeleteThis is the power of the P1 right here (and a sample of the occasional gold one stumbles across on Twitter):

Priceless. Clever and very nicely executed. Thanks, AP.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Mike would ever leave the ticket, because i believe he had a chance to leave a few years ago??? someone help me out here. he would have left then if he was ever going to leave is my guess.
ReplyDeleteI have been in Houston for 2 weeks, with 3 to go... Boy, we just don't appreciate the little one enough. The freakin Fan is better than anything they have down here. Oddly, ESPN radio is a Cumulus holding in Houston....
ReplyDeleteWhere's our fresh content? Over a week with no entries? I demand a refund.
ReplyDeleteShaggy, I'm composing one now. My employer has thoughtlessly had me working 7 days a week, with some late night duties thrown in.
ReplyDeleteBut you have a point, and I am happy to return every nickel you've invested in My Ticket Confession.
radio is defined theatre of the mind. rhynes has realized his prominent position in the city of dallas and is doing a bit, keeping people interested. the hardline is 20x better now since corby started being a stiffass and not a yunkmonkey. all praise the greatness of rhynes.
