A brilliant debut.
This was what I call "process humor" -- it made fun of a certain manner of speaking, of the presentation rather than what was being said (because he said, essentially, nothing). Very witty and funny, and a great performance, but once it's established, it's a one-joke joke. The challenge will be to introduce humorous substance, at least if Gordon intends to do it more than once or twice a season, as I assume he's going to. (I wonder if they'll try to engineer some Fake Jerry/Fake Garrett dialogues.) By that, I mean Fake Jason talking about something (i.e., football, the prior day's game, players) other than his own manner of talking.
A Jason Garrett fave phrase I did not hear: "awfully good."
I thought that voice sounded somewhat processed. It sounded like they had a plate echo on it, and there was a roughness to the timbre that sounded like it might have been artificially added.
No matter, it was great. Legend potential.
The Plainsman is not only an expert on humour, but audio engineering. Amazing!

ReplyDeleteIt was pretty great... Gotta say, I heard NO plate reverb in that cut. Even listened again. I think the timbre was the phone line effect.

ReplyDeleteI was laughing pretty hard, but it was as much at Junior and George as it was Fake Garrett. Their reaction to it was really amusing. I can see this developing into a more full-featured character over time, and I'm looking forward to it. I'd love to hear a little point/counterpoint between Wade and Jason.

Evan Grant used to seem to enjoy doing his reports, but the past month or so he gives the impression of it being an incredible chore.
Grubes: Yeah, that makes sense. It wasn't extremely noticeable, but it had that hollow plate-y sound.

ReplyDeleteOn the Cowboys post-game, he said that next week at that time he would be in Argentina. Yesterday when Cirque du Sirois came on at 10, they said Norm was under the weather.

He went to Argentina. And you know what? While he said that this trip "presented" itself in this specific time frame; meaning that if he wanted to take this trip, he had to do it now, there was a time when Norm wouldn't have given a vacation during the World Series a second thought--regardless who was playing in it. Don't be shocked if within the next 2 years if Norm announces his retirement. Oh I know, I'm going to get slammed for saying this. "Norm will die on air!" "There's no way Norm will retire without being forced to!" Don't be so sure about all that, folks.

ReplyDeleteIs Norm on his honeymoon? If he got married a few weeks ago, he obviously hasn't been away since then. These things tend to be planned months in advance and not movable for something so new-wife-unfriendly as a World Series appearance by the Rangers.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I hadn't heard about the marrige, so a heartfelt My Ticket Confession to Norm and new bride.
They've talked about it on Cirque du Sirois and BaD in round about ways (marriage). Norm actually went on his annual sports weekend getaway with his friends the weekend after he got married. What's odd is that both CDS and now, today, the Soul Patch (man I hate that name) have both said Norm is out due to some sort of illness. However, Norm said last week that he was going on vacation to Argentina. The whole thing is weird. While I can see CDS goofing about Norm (because of the Mike S. producer connection), I can't see the SP doing as such.

Thanks last Anon - I'll listen extra-hard to see if I can piece together what's going on. I'm currently two weeks behind, so Norm is still on the air in my world, and the Rangers have yet to play Game 1 of the ALCS.
