A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

Campound Postscript
I have visions of hosts and minions from ESPN and The Fan tuning in to the Campound broadcasts, whereupon they immediately plotz. What must it be like to know that you have to compete with stuff like that? And can't?
Craig "Junior" Miller combines seamless broadcasting choreography with a totally unhinged perspective on nearly everything. Including, notably this time around, harmless tiny dangling spiders. As Danny Balis has observed, Junior is the craziest mother on The Ticket.
Dan shines come Campound time. Might be fun to do some ad hoc White Elephants of him on other shows, doing more fill-in for absentees.
Mike loosens up even before he's likkered up.
And Corby -- sorry, critics, the guy does make me laugh disproportionately to his percentage of time on the air.
Good stuff all around. Congratulations on another successful extended bit.
Pound for pound it's the funniest 48 hours of the broadcast year. I hope it never goes away.
ReplyDeleteP'man - Corby was functioning as an abrasive and over the top yuk monkey. That's his strength. It's when he tries to be knowledgeable about sports and current events that he becomes tedious.
ReplyDeleteI think I have an answer to the question about what sport you could play the longest without being exposed. Curling. Not that it doesn't require skill, but I think you can fake skill over athleticism longer.
There is truth in what you say, 605. (Whenever I see that time, 6:05 p.m., I start singing Steely Dan's "Glamour Profession" to myself.) I don't know if I'd use the word "tedious," but he does shine as an entertaining sidekick. And, if it it not already apparent from my occasional forays into sports commentary in these articles and comments, I myself am not very knowledgeable about sports.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I'll hold forth for a bit on the Stars-Blues series.
I watched almost all of Game 4 in St. Louis. I was hoping to be listening to Dave and Razor while watching TV, but they were way, way ahead of the action on the screen so I listened to the TV audio. I started watching with Mrs. P on the screen in the family room, but had a hard time following, so I headed to the elliptical with the big TV and it was a revelation. I could see the puck and follow the game and enjoyed it to the end.
In listening to radio broadcasts of other games on The Ticket and watching the teevee, I formed the conclusion that the Stars are vulnerable to bullyboys but are the superior finesse team. If the officials don't tamp down the Blues' roughhousing, the Stars are in trouble. And I still don't quite know exactly what icing is, but I'll look it up.
Aren't ESPNs minions still the Tickets minions?
ReplyDelete-I like Cobra. I know he is a fan favorite around these parts, but outside of his Mike Greenberg-like analysis at times, he's alright with me.
@Jay G "-I like Cobra. I know he is a fan favorite around these parts"....what parts do you live?!
ReplyDeleteI'll admit that I haven't tuned into the Ticket as frequent as I used to, but when they do things like the Camppound or the Musers trip of Texas, I tend to tune in.
ReplyDeleteI used to really enjoy the Musers on my drive into work, but I'm starting to lean more towards BaD radio on the podcasts. I feel the Musers has become stale and predictable. Gordo continues to sabotage the broadcasts. I tried to listen to the late night Ticket when Gordo and George were taking calls and it became completely unbearable after about 20 minutes. Gordon Keith is a brilliant dude that can pretty much debate any conversation intelligently. He is a great intellectual mind, but he is also a man-child that feels that he is continuously trying to get the approval of George.
I love events where all of the hosts are together and they jump on each other broadcasts. I feel it adds freshness to the broadcasts. White Elephant is my favorite time of the year, because it mixes things up.
I would love to hear one of the hosts try to do a "Norm-a-Thon" type thing on one of these outings where they are on the air from the time the Musers start to the time the Hardline goes off the air.
Campound is sadly some of the only must listen radio left on the Little Ticket.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have a problem with Donovan taking the reins - almost everybody else had bailed and gone to bed. Put a few drinks in him and Corby is an FCC violation waiting to happen. I wonder how much delay they were running at 2 am.
ReplyDeleteI wish they had gotten more of the story from the woman who was on her way to Dallas Executive Airport to pick up her husband because he was vomiting.
And thumbs up to the guy who woke up his mother and gave her his phone to talk to Mike and Corby. That could have been really tense.
Donovan is a beating of the highest degree. He has a shift at 10; he needs to do like the Musers do and go to bed during the late night broadcasts at the camppound.
ReplyDeleteCampound was greatness as always. Almost as great as not hearing Tom Grieve on the radio every week. Rusty Greer is a much better listen than TaG.
ReplyDeleteI've been out of the loop since February. The Tom Grieve Show has been replaced by The Rusty Grier Show? If so, was there any reason given?
ReplyDeleteBecause TaG is a powerdown of the highest order.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't answer my question. You've merely snarked.
ReplyDelete@6:22, Rusty has been on with Bad this baseball season. To my knowledge it has not been discussed why Tom Grieve doesn't come on anymore. I know he is taking a lighter load on being the FSSW color analyst, so maybe he just was tired of doing the weekly. Too me, BaD has far fewer powerdown segments here lately, and no TaG is part of that. Rusty is a far more interesting listen, and although he is a Ranger fan, he doesn't drip with homerism like TaG. I think Jake can be thanked for running a tighter ship honestly, so maybe he suggested this move or maybe it just stemmed from when they called Rusty on his birthday on WTDS.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a baseball fan so any segment about baseball is a powerdown for me but I agree replacing TaG with Rusty has been a major improvement. The next step would be to get rid of the weekly baseball show altogether.
ReplyDeleteThank you, 701, I appreciate the info.
ReplyDeleteSevere failed bit warning right now on K Ticket. Slap Stick Brothers have severe same voice.
ReplyDeleteHey look on the bright side...at least now we don't have to hear the Stars playoff promo cacophony or Corby's feigned interest in hockey.
ReplyDeleteThe Stars promo stinger is going to be with us for a long time.
ReplyDelete@8:48 The SlapShot Brothers were wheels off, but I laughed.
ReplyDelete@ellislives, outside of Bob I think everybody's interest in hockey has been pretty feigned. The most comical thing I have heard over the last two weeks is Dan Balls talking like a hockey lifer.
Regarding the Stars, it is all fine and dandy to be a high flying finesse team in the regular season. When the playoffs start defense and goaltending win the day. Jim Nill has a lot of work to do.
Ratings Released
ReplyDeleteCorby and Danny hatred continues yet untalented Jake & TC continue to skate on this site. makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteWow, a 14.1 share for the Musers! And, reports of the station's demise were premature, it appears:

Carlton, a friendly invitation to go back and read the last half-dozen or so articles and all of the comments. You'll find praise for Corby and Danny (check this very article) and Jake and T.C. mercilessly slagged, in addition to the reactions you're complaining about here. I have to monitor Jake/T.C. commentary for exceptionally non-constructive loathing.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to the ratings, I find it endlessly amusing that BaD radio is building from its lead in and the Hardline can't hold it, even during afternoon drive.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the fix. The show needs a co-host and a yuk monkey, but it's practically impossible to walk the Cobra back into his natural spot and insert a new co-host. It would be seen as a demotion even though it would be more like playing someone at their natural position instead of where they're filling in until you can draft or develop the right guy for that spot.
There's a good reason for the TC commentary P-Man. This week he referred to the Rangers having a great "pissing advantage".
ReplyDeleteHad the water running so couldn't clearly hear all of Jake's commentary on being the BaD Radio producer, but sounded fascinating. The one thing I did hear that probably gives a flavor of his remarks on the experience of working with Bob and Dan: He said that the longer he does the job, his regard for Tom Gribble increases astronomically.
ReplyDeleteJake is good...strong performance filling in on the musers this morning.
ReplyDeleteI do think its interesting that you can switch up the lineups on any of the shows and they would still be strong. The Ticket talent is bursting at the seams and the recent ratings reflect that.
I do have one request of TC and/or any of the ticker guys...throw in a few bits every once in awhile. TC used to do the spare transaction of the week on fridays. Just little bits, nothing fancy.
There's a less than zero chance that Cat has given a no-bits edict to the ticker guys. No inside knowledge here or anything, but it seems like that might be the case.
ReplyDeleteOops, I meant greater than zero chance obviously.
ReplyDelete@shaggy probably so, but a p1 can dream...I love the ticker guys buuuuuuuut how useful is the ticker?
ReplyDeleteThe Ticker is inventory - it's something that the Candy Man can hawk 3x/HR to the Diamond Cut Jeans and Low T Centers of the world to shore up that Cumulus bottom line
ReplyDelete@Ed
ReplyDeleteI never thought of it that way but you are probably correct.
Loved Cirque's anti-Mickey Mouse rant today, comparing him unfavorably to other cinematic rodents and heroic cartoon characters, from Speedy Gonzalez to Popeye, not to mention fat TV husbands married to hot wives who are the direct descendants of Ralph Kramden and Fred Flintstone. It went off in many different directions and it was masterful and hilarious. All circling (or cirqueling) back to the lameness of Mickey.
ReplyDeleteI missed the front end of it so I assume this was all original material, but if it was, Cash (I think it was Cash, but I've misidentified Siroises before -- please correct me) should consider a career as a humorist. Great stuff.
The misidentification is understandable, P'Man. You'll remember they are twins, separated by a mere 3 years. I wish I could hear more of them, but alas I' busy on the weekends.
ReplyDeleteJake and TC aren't constantly telling people that don't think/vote/feel like they do that they are ignorant bigots. That may have something to do with the Corby/Danny disdain on here. I actually like Corby and Danny when they aren't preaching or being hypocrites.
ReplyDeleteCORRECTION: Sorry, Mike Sirois. It's easier for me to tell you and Cash apart when you're both speaking in normal tones and having a conversation. The extended rant meant I didn't have a good point of reference, and the elevated tone eliminated some of the "tells" for voice identification.
ReplyDeleteSo: Very nice job, a true Ticket masterpiece. It should be rebroadcast on the other shows.
