A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

So What's the Deal on Dave Lane?
I came to The Ticket after the main Davey Lane years, I think. I started listening in late 2004 or thereabouts. I never heard The Rant, but maybe I wasn't tuning in weekends at that time -- thought I was, but maybe not.
I did hear The Orphanage for many years. Loved it. Miss it.
Whenever I hear him on the air, I think: This is good. This sounds like a Ticket guy. Sounds, in fact, like a Ticket host. Has, in fact, that Craig "Junior" Miller crazy/cool vibe.
Would most of us consider his appearances with Corby and Danny this week to be a success? I would. (And it reminds us, as we have been reminded many times, that Corby can be really good when he's away from The Hardline setting.)
So I ask, why not more Dave Lane?
And why did he leave The Ticket to begin with?
I ask it reluctantly, because I fear it may provoke answers having something to do with some unfortunate employment situation, or internal Ticket problem, or domestic issues, that are really none of this site's business. Well, maybe internal Ticket problems are.
I can see why a guy might leave a station voluntarily. If, for example, he wanted to make an actual living instead of waiting on a Ticket host to die.
But, if LinkedIn is to be believed, the man is somewhat at loose ends right now, and has been for awhile.
But, alas, there is no room for him at The Ticket most of the time. With full-time JVs scrabbling for airtime and fill-in host duties, there just aren't a lot of slots for cameos by Historical Ticket Figures.
I'm rambling. I don't have a point. I just like listening to Dave Lane, I wish he were on more often, I'm sorry he's not a full-time Ticket star, and MTC wishes him well.

ReplyDeleteIt's GxD's final Ticker with THL. It was the last straw for Mike, Greggo, and Cat. Between Corby, Gordo (who was still contributing to THL at the time) and GxD, THL, per GW\MR\Cat, was turning into The Rant far too often. GxD's Tickers were beautiful train wrecks. But that last one basically turned the death of Dr. J's son into a Rant bit. I can't recall the Kscott part of the equation. But that's the gist of the story.
ReplyDeleteI'm OK with Gen-X Davey, but what kind of JV mutiny would Cat have on his hands if he put Davey back in the rotation?
ReplyDeleteSolid info, 410. Many thanks. One of those one-time Ticket events that explain a lot about a lot that goes on.
ReplyDeleteYou betcha, Pman. One more tid bit: Mike wasn't GxD's biggest fan at the time. That, however, is no longer the case. They've become music\concert attending buds. For me, two of the best Ticket moments are from GxD. Both were on The Orphanage (though the first was originally brought up on The Rant). The first was his pushing his Jeep home after a rather sad and embarrassing outing at a local strip club. Tear inducing hilarity peppered with an earnestness about where he was in life at the time. The second was his open, frank, and devastatingly honest, heartfelt discussion with Danny about his first divorce. Both he and Danny let it all hang out. Even if you'd never been married, it hit you hard. We've all been there in a relationship--the painful end of the line. It was spellbinding, thought provoking radio that I'll never forget.
ReplyDeleteThanks again 410/602. Davey and Danny would make occasional reference to their marital misfortuntes on The Orphanage, but did not hear the segment you describe.
ReplyDelete602, honorable mention to Irving Cares. A laugh to the point of crying live spot by Davey. Though somehow I remember Gordo also being involved. Really wish they revisited it this week.
ReplyDeleteI REALLY enjoyed THL this past week more than I have in a long time. I love the chemistry between the 3 of them! I actually looked forward to 3:00...and it’s been awhile since I’ve felt this way. Political and/or social issues still finds us as polar opposites (that’s EVERY host) But count me in for everything else. I would love to see the ratings with the addition of GxD. It’s time for M R to ride off into the sunset. This would give him all the time he wanted for Petty Theft. See, I still remember the O G W saying, on more than one occasion “we don’t owe the P1 a thing” in his typical surly tone. And that was said to the same listeners that without them he wouldn’t have the life he has today. I’m ready for him to go and fully enjoy it.

My personal GXD favorite was Michelle Wie’s pillow...
ReplyDeleteFunny picture of Danny and a small pig as DJs over on the Reddit site.
ReplyDeleteMonte and Mino settling in nicely on Sunday mornings. Show sounds very polished this morning, Mino starting to hit his stride.
ReplyDelete10:10 thanks for the Irving Cares. Ticket gold. I can't remember Gordon ever laughing that hard.
ReplyDeleteA grateful tip o' th' hat to NBC, who played the intro to The Smithereens' "A Girl Like You" near the beginning of the presentation. Its composer and singer, Pat DiNizio, died last Tuesday. Any love for New Jersey power pop out there?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. "Behind A Wall Of Sleep" is an all-time fave of mine. Great tunesmith, uniquely cool voice. RIP Pat Dininzio.
ReplyDeleteAn addendum to the Corey Erving Ticker and KScott's role in the GenX Davey saga. Davey became the HL Ticker guy when Followill left to temporarily fill in on the Mav's radio broadcast while Bob Ortegel was dealing with an illness. When the season ended Mark came back and Davey was let go. When Mark left for the permanent Mav's TV gig the Ticker position was not offered to Davey and went to KScott instead.
ReplyDeleteRather than wait around making peanuts, Davey found a survivable income as a copywriter. He had a child to raise.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kyle, for another brick in the wall of Ticket history.
ReplyDeleteAnd.....Davey started doing voice overs. Remember, he was the voice of the Rangers preseason hype campaign from several years ago.
ReplyDeleteYou could use some BASEBALL...
DeleteHe was also the voice of metro pcs for awhile
ReplyDeleteBob and Newbes were fantastic. Loved the Dan pop in and pop on. A real fist pumper of a moment. CF is rockin' the bells.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Dan showed up at the remote (Eatzi's, I believe) and did a seggie. Pure greatness. As was the triumvirate of Bob and David and Jake. Some solid shit on The Littlest of Ones this afternoon, fo sho.
ReplyDeleteWas listening today, can't believe I missed this.
ReplyDeleteMay the Country Force be with us.
Take it for what it's worth, which ain't a lick, but often times when someone is contemplating an exit from a long time situation, they will reminisce in an unexpected and public way. New year about to arrive, officially knocking on 70's door, might even have a twinge of "time to allow a new generation of voices to have their say...and we're in good hands with these guys...they'll carry on the station, the legacy, the right way, The Ticket Way"....... Just saying. And he sees Francesca move on...might be time, buddy.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I'm referring to Mike's Tweet listing all Day1 personnel.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the clarification.
ReplyDeleteInteresting speculation.
But I'm not feeling it.
Too easy a gig for Mike right now, considering his light duty on The Hardline.
Who's Francesca?
Mike of Mike and the Mad Dog, I believe.
ReplyDeleteOh, Francesa. Thanks, should have figured that out.
ReplyDeleteI love the Sirois...It's always a wild sports show with them.
ReplyDeleteAgree, but too many voices today.
ReplyDeleteAnd a very happy birfday to Craig "Junior" Miller.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Joonz. Gagreed, too many guns a flapping in CdS today. But otherwise, solid mf'n outing by the Wonder Twins.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of the Siroisie. But yesterday's show sounded like one of their Saturday shows from a couple of years ago where everyone had an open mic at all times. To my ear, they cleaned up that scene, but yesterday was something of a throwback. Still, some very fun segments despite the cacaphony.
ReplyDeleteListening to Troy Aikman today. One observation and one question:
ReplyDelete1. The JV had prepared some very substantive questions for Troy's visit, and it sounded like Aikman was pleasantly surprised at how good the questions were.
2. How much does the Ticket pay Peter King, Troy, Whitten, etc, for their regular visits? I could see it being a very low amount, but then it wouldn't be worth the time of millionaires like Aikman. But if it's a lot, say $50k a year, well, that seems like too big a chunk of a radio station's budget. Any MTC readers have inside info on this?
James, that's amazing -- I had exactly the same impression. I thought Troy seemed unusually engaged, giving answers with a little more meat than usual.
ReplyDeleteDon't know about the $$. But that's a real good question.
This might be an important post I should pay better attention to than the whiskey and 216 will afford.
ReplyDeleteGenXD got a better gig for a while I thought. Perhaps that will be dismissed later after a further reading.
Oh yeah I hear he has some story off the MTC normal realm of commentary. It seems like a kinda sorta open secrety thing, but delete this if it is over the line PMan. A famousy QB and a girlfriend. Cut at the necessary lines
I miss the Rant. It won't go back there. They have all gotten older and got kids and sponsibilities.
it happens. Every once in a while we get a little taste at roadshow or where they all get mashed together. Savor those moments.
I don't know about the rest of y'all but I am digging the Big Bob Wilonsky Christmas Eve speshul.
Gen X Davey is brilliant. He's so much better than any of the other fill in guys especially the 2 IJB clowns.
ReplyDeleteWould love if GXD got more airtime.
