A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

White Elephant Listening Post -- Let's Make It a Lively but Respectful Thread
I know it's a lame redhead-related-to-elephant image, but the only other two on the entire Internet I'd already used, and they weren't choice, either.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the day. Should be fun.
Look, everyone, I know everyone's favorites Corby and T.C. will be doing a show together, but let's keep thing civil, OK? (Have you caught the reaction -- including by Corby -- on the shows when mention is made of their noon-3 partnership tomorrow? There's a novel between the lines there.)
But there's always great stuff from the hosts doing lower-tier tasks. Danny states he is only going to read tonight's hockey score for each of his tickers ftom 10 to 3. I'll listen as much as I can, but as usual, you guys will have to do most of the work. You know there will be gold, and some tension as well.
Enjoy it, Confessors.
And report.
Jake's tickers are top notch this morning. Bob, Mike, and Donny are starting the day off strong.
ReplyDeleteJake singing "I'm Waiting on a Ticket Host to Die" was flat out hilarious. And very much true!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic first hour so far! Agree Jake's ticket host yearning song was hilariously funny and true. Potentially a not so veiled hint also..
ReplyDeleteAlso makes me think the Ticket management could add Jake to Donovan and Norm as a 3rd host in coming year in anticipation of Norm retiring in coming 2 years. Donovan and Jake have good chemistry when they do pairings together such as the Thursday night F around
Solid morning show with Sturm, Sirois, Lewis.
ReplyDeleteBut Jake's sending it into the stratosphere. His Marinelli warnings on currency speculation is one of the wittiest things I've heard on The Ticket in a long time.
Interesting to compare his writing style with Gordon's. Brilliant in different ways.
Brilliant? Tap the brakes. Very funny, clever, and a hint of bigger picture thinking, absolutely. Totally agree that a Jake, Donnie, Norm team would be aces up the irons.
ReplyDeleteI don't throw that word around lightly. That was comedy writing of a very high order.
ReplyDeleteI think we've found the new morning Musers in Bob, Mike, Donny, and Jake.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very good ensemble grouping - much better than T-bag nation which comes across as a similar ensemble.
ReplyDeleteSolid show so far.
ReplyDeleteFirst thing I thought about at 5:30 was poor Bob Sturm having to struggle through that pile of manure the Stars dropped last night and then having to do the morning shift.
Tyler Seguin is not into his 9:45 call after a night game. Of course, it's great radio.
ReplyDeleteThe Tickle Ticker was one of the best things I've heard on the station in a long time. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteReally like Junior a lot, in fact he's my leader. But I haaaaaaaaaate coast to coast. Hate that he's wasting his 2 hour platform on this useless garbage.
ReplyDeleteYeah... I think C2C works a lot better as late night fun.
ReplyDeleteLove me some Junes, but... This entire show so far is begging for the Danny alarm.
THIS SUCKS THIS SUCKS THIS SUCKS
#mypig is low hanging fruit for White Elephant Day.
ReplyDeleteI have a procedural question. If the hosts take their live spots with them to whatever shift they are working, do they have to clear it with the advertiser?
ReplyDeleteGordo's initial ticker where he was deadpan serious to start but kept repeating the same stories over and over was understated genius IMO.
ReplyDeleteGordo's "getting serviced" Ticket was overt radio anthrax.
ReplyDeleteGrades are in:
ReplyDelete5:45 - 10:00 = A++ (seem happy to be there and put work into it)
10:00 - 1200 = C- (I love Junior but he would have done better with an all cycling show)
12:00 - 3:00 = D (sad when you have to say a JV player is better than the Tier 1 host)
3:00 - 7:00 = B (solid but nothing great, expected more from Gordo, very little effort)
Still look forward to it each year.
10-12 was an F minus minus on my HS English teacher's grading scale. there is nothing that gets me to punch out faster than Junior Miller left to his own devices. I enjoy him as a Muser, but coast to coast is garbage.
ReplyDeleteSo, we're going on what, three weeks with Cray Trey helming The Top Ten? Is Fahy on vacay or is he no longer a Ticket employee?
ReplyDeleteI heard most of the day up until about 1:45.
ReplyDeleteAgree re the morning show. So glad Jake replayed "Waitng for a Ticket Host to Die" parody at the end of the run. Something that took that much work and creativity -- needed the bigger audience. Considering these guys don't write parodies for a living -- howlarious.
I liked J CtC more than some of you did. I found myself asking myself during the Bigfoot interview (1) does Junior really believe this? and (2) if he doesn't, how ethical is it to have on an absolutely sincere believer, the leading expert, no less, in a show that sends up beliefs like that? What representations were made to the guy when he was invited to come on? In the end, I didn't have problem with it, but the thought crossed my mind. Nice of Mike to come in and contribute to the gag.
I only heard a little bit of Corby and T.C. It was mostly Corby during the time I could listen. T.C.'s story of teenage drug experimentation and its aftermath was actually rather touching, especially when he spoke about his parents.
Heard almost none of PM drive. Only Gordon thing I heard was his final Lee Harvey Oswald/Jesus thing, a tease on his own obsession. Didn't offend me, but it was surpassing strange.
They promote White Elephant Day as a disaster waiting to happen. It never is, of course, but some unevenness is to be expected. Jake takes the prize.
Most of these guys have been working together for 10-20 years so their WE groupings should be no more uncomfortable than any given GNO.
ReplyDeleteHow do you have Jub, Dan, and Gordon...with all the makings of record-breaking radio gold, and then throw in Norm to mess everything up?!
ReplyDeleteI didn't get to hear all of Jake yesterday but listened to his ticker montage this morning on the podcast. Here's how I rank his tickers.
ReplyDelete1. "Waiting On A Ticket Host To Die"
2. Acoustic Ticker
3. Tattoo Ticker
4. Marinelli Ticker
5. Tickle Ticker
I also listened to a little bit of C2C on the podcast, particularly the part with Rynes explaining what people should do during this time and the Bigfoot expert. Both of those were actually really good. The Bigfoot guy was greatness and Junes treated it like a real interview. It wasn't Junior or Gordo doing a fake voice, it sounded legit.
Agree with the emerging consensus that Jake won the day. He is an emerging star at the station and has worked himself up to Tier 1.5 He is clearly above any other of the JVs in both potential, talent and probability of ascension to Tier 1.
ReplyDeleteAlso agree with a commenter who hinted that Norm messed up the afternoon grouping. Norm only really blends well with Donovan it seems based on their decade of post game shows and morning pairing. Throw Norm in with anyone else and he flounders... Don't Bog....
Was it just me or did Norm seem genuinely upset that he wasn't invited to lunch with Dan and George? He brought it up a few times.
ReplyDeleteHe is a radio legend, but all things must end. I really feel like he doesn't have anything left. He is the only punch out I have on the station.

ReplyDeleteJake's ticker montage
ReplyDeleteTwo comments - Jake was easily the star of WED. Disagree with Corby's review of the new U2 album. He says it could be considered one of their masterpieces. Boy, I don't see it. I've listened a couple of times and I'm not knocking their musicianship, but ranking it alongside War, Joshua Tree, or Achtung Baby - I don't think it's even as good as their last.
ReplyDeleteWhat's up with Mino? Is he no longer board opping for THL? Also where's Fahey? Blink for a second!
ReplyDeleteMino's in vacay, I believe. I guess Fahy has been too. Though he's been gone a few weeks now, so who knows. Cray Trey said tonight's Top Ten was his last for the year. Notice he didn't mention Fahy's return and that this was the last one for this year, not until he's needed for another full in.
ReplyDeleteGetting used to the new Hardline board op Josh. He seems nervous and finding his way. One thing I have noticed is everybody is very patient and nice to em’. That is NOT how M R treats new board ops. I never caught his last name but D B has a son named Josh. Not the same Josh is it? And like someone earlier asked. Where is Mino?
ReplyDeleteAgree with the consensus that Jake was exceptional! Hope he elevates to Tier 1 soon.
It seems like Justin’s role has scaled way back. Why??? Really disappointed he doesn’t have a sat show. Something is going on....
Eh, pal, he has a Sunday show with....wait for it...Mino.
ReplyDeleteFahy will be back next week.
ReplyDeleteAlso Mino and Justin have a Sunday show. Work in Progress. 8am till 1030am. Please listen!
DeleteI hope Jake's marriage can survive his emerging stardom. He seems to have some cute social media followers. He will need to watch the pitfalls of stardom as many cute girls throw themselves at the handsome tall future millionaire.
ReplyDeleteGeez, 908, can you be any creepier?
ReplyDeleteis 908 Jake's wife?
ReplyDeleteCrayTrey to the rescue.
ReplyDeleteGugreed with Jake as WED MVP. I found myself being certain to keep my ears listening to the Tickers.
Fahey was on with Ty Walker this morning. Eli is on vacay too from what I can tell on his FB.
In the Unpopular Opinion file I kinda like drydock mixed bag.
Oh and here's a thought. By the time they return at full strength the Cowboys may be toast
or Crushing the Competition!
yeah. 9.83% chance buddy
Been away for a few days.
ReplyDeleteMore A+ comedy writing and performance by Jake as Baker Mayfield. There's some sly and sophisticated stuff there, and the performance sold it beautifully.
I believe Ty and Jer are doing a Star Wars pre-game show tonight at 7pm.
ReplyDeleteYep, and I'm looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteBoth sounding good.
ReplyDeleteJer needs to have his mic turned up a little.
Jer with a sly reference to the Monty Python theory-about-the-Brontosaurus sketch, recently featured in MTC!
ReplyDeleteTY: [Discussing the parentage of Jyn] Here's my theory.
JER: And it's yours.
How long is Rhyner on vacay? Even though the R&R Hall of Fame is kind of a joke, I always enjoy hearing Mike chime in on the new inductees. He's very engaged in the conversation, more than normal day-to-day for him. I'd certainly like to hear him discuss Dire Straits, The Cars, Nina Simone, and Rosetta Tharp (I couldn't care less about Bon Jovi, and I suspect Mike doesn't have much to say about them)
ReplyDeleteThe fact that it took this long for Dire Straits and The Cars to get in, while a plethora of far less important acts have already been inducted, only speaks to the sham that is the R&R HoF.
ReplyDelete"But the music make her wanna be the story
And the story was whatever was the song what it was
Rollergirl don't worry
D.J. play the movies all night long"
Ah, Skateaway.
ReplyDeleteLady Writer, I offer you a loud AMEN.
In fact, I think the Hall got 5 of 6 right this year, with Bon Jovi being the bad choice.
That said, the one who is getting the least publicity, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, is most likely the most deserving in terms of her influence on everyone who came after her.
Love the Rant Reunion. Anyone know if Davey is still unemployed? I'd love to see him in a regular position on the station.
ReplyDeleteAccording to his LinkedIn he is still seeking opportunities
ReplyDeleteShaggy's comment inspired me to look it up, and I bet Davey's is the only LinkedIn profile with a "train-wreck" self description:
