Campound Daze

Hey, Confessors, sorry I've not been in good touch lately.  Looks like that will continue another week or so.   Had a hard time catching much of the showgrams other than a bit of the Musers and less of that than I would have liked.

So just getting another thread started here to invite you to weigh in with reactions to the Campound on The Ticket, thirteen-ten AM and ninety-six seven FM sports.

I'd still like to know why Dan was mad at Jake without having to go back and listen to the podcast.

Two outdoorsy redheads in expiation for my absence.

  1. Dan always yells at Jake when Jake tells them they need to wrap up WTDS. It's a recurring bit. Jake happened to criticize Dan's bad Kimbo Slice joke (Bob said it was horrible too), so Dan decided to pull the dump 'n' chase.

Go listen on the bobanddan.com WTDS page. Starts at 14:22. It'll take you less than a minute.

  2. I will just reiterate the HSO I posted on r/theticket: I hope deep-night doesn't once again reduce to asking female callers about their grexual activities. Kinda tired and not really all that funny.

  3. I don't know Anon 1:26 give me drunk #metoo moments over Junior's coast to coast any day of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Donnie having Jub live-narrate the "This is America" video was brilliance.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Big Gordon fan, but his PC act--while obviously meant ironically--is show-stoppingly unfunny.

    ReplyDelete
  6. @David dodenhoff... I'm also a huge Gordon guy. You might even say he's my leader. But your dead on with that hot Gordon take. And I'm a self confessed bleeding heart. But... Yeah. All we're getting from Gordon tonight is the occasional chime in of "if that's what they identify as" type humor. Disappointing considering his potential for genius.

Corby has been A+ tonight though.

    ReplyDelete
  7. OK I take it back. Gordon doing fake tony the engineer has got me in stitches.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Oh, wait, Gordon is hilariously demeaning someone he feels is his inferior\whom he feels can get away with it? NO! WAY!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Gordon Keith: He's the station, and the MTC comment section, cancer.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Some genuine tension in the 5:30 segment this morning. Last night I caught a little bit of Gordon's sex call-in show last night that had George's name in its (somewhat shifting) title.

George, who was not present, did not like this.

"If you do it again," he said, or WTTE, "I'm either going to sue you, or there's going to be a fight." And he added, in a non-ironic, non-winking voice, "And I'm not kidding." He said this again later in the segment.

My campaign for an end to George-baiting has failed. But at least George is fighting back. A little.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That was not genuine tension, George and Gordo do that ALL THE TIME

    ReplyDelete
  12. Respectfully disagree, Surly. George and Gordon do go at it from time to time, but this had a very different feel to it. When he said "And I'm not kidding," it sounded like he was not kidding. And it put Gordon back on his heels just a bit. Wasn't a lot of joshing around.

    ReplyDelete
  13. AMENDMENT: No, I don't think George would sue or punch Gordon out so yeah, from that standpoint it wasn't "genuine." But I do think he was genuinely mad at Gordon associating his name with some pretty raunchy material last night.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Jub brought up suing again in the 8am segment, and clearly it was shtick and brought about chuckles from the round table. I will postulate that:
-Deep down, George loves Gordon and the feeling is mutual.
-Jub appreciates Gordo's genius, and vice versa.
-Jub has even suggested on air that Gordo's devil's advocate-driven worldview has occasionally prompted Jub to change some of his own strongly held beliefs.
-Jub also thinks that Gordon is twisted, perverted, and bordering on insane.
-Jub can probably take Gordo only in small doses. These guys aren't skiing together on the weekends.
-Jub, up to a limit, embraces the on air chaos and entertainment value that ensues when personalities as different as theirs tangle on live radio. That limit is further downstream than we the listeners are led to believe.
-When Gordo baits him over the line, George can get genuinely irate on air.
-And the most speculative of points, I think, OCCASIONALLY, Goerge is fine with removing his filter and letting himself boil over on Gordo on air. It's angry, it's uncomfortable, and it's real. It also reinforces to the listener how different these two people are, and therefore makes their odd couple chemistry even more interesting. And hilarious. Another reason why George is a genius.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The "I'm not kidding" was a Lee Corso-BaD Radio quote. George and Gordon quote that infamous exchange all the time as well.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Exactly what i was thinking. They were literally doing the Dan/ Corso interview verbatim. Pretty funny on the way to work this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I hope the late night stuff will be posted up somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Is anyone heading to Lloyd Park to try to become part of the show is some small way ? With all the P1s out there I hope someone makes and attempt to..........

  20. I found out it was Lloyd Park through and insider..... hope someone does something.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, we found out Gordo remarried.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Love you much, Pman, but that wasn't genuine tension in the least. All for radio. As some commenters have noted, the "and I'm not kidding" is a Corso reference.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Anon1020
    right there with you.
Jub and Gordo are good for each other.

cray trey is making points on this night

    ReplyDelete
  24. Mikes still got carter albrecht in his phone. I know it's late night shits and giggles but this hit a nerve with me as I have at least 4 dead friends still on my contact list too.

The time just flys by, doesn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Confessors, I have no doubt that George was channeling Lee Corso. But he was channeling Lee Corso for a reason -- Corso had had his fill of Big Jerk Dan. George may have been referencing a bit, but he wasn't doing a bit. Bits are fun, but when you pick that bit to engage a colleague, you have a reason. And the tenor of the exchange was not lighthearted or ironic.

To my ear. Could be wrong. Not a big breach or anything, but he wanted Gordon to know he was displeased.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Does anyone know the origins of the often used Ticket phrase that almost everyone has used on air? It goes something like this: "Its the world we live in today sports" The "today sports" is added awkwardly to a lot of sentences. Just curious if anyone knows what this is all about? I hear it almost daily on one show or another.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's a Jerry quote from Troy's retirement presser

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anon 9:36, if memory serves that line was from a Jerry Jones press conference. I'm a bit hazy on it but I believe it involved Troy Aikmans retirement, or marriage, or something.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Google the speech. It is another tremendous Jerry performance

    ReplyDelete
  30. I turned on the Ticket yesterday at various times and every time the snake was on. Is there anybody likes the sound of their voice more than Corby?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I never get tired of hearing Norm's ad for the Sante Center...every frickin' time I start the app. (And what's with that weird tag line, "The only right choice that ever mattered."?)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Corby was the fucking star man of Campound. Second place went to Dan

So, I hope you all heard Norm talking about retirement this morning. Said he thinks about it every week, sometimes several days in a row. If he's still here this time next year, I'll be surprised. I'm looking for a New Year's announcement saying something to the effect that after the draft, he's gone, bitches.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ anon 1:38...Hi Corby!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nope, not Corby. Honorable mention, Rhyner. His availability this year has been fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  35. GEEZ O PETE MAN ALIVE! I wish Gordo would drop the uber PC joke series. Such tired head given.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "Hey twitter, my last day at The Ticket is Wednesday. I'll be a few months shy of hitting the decade mark. I will always treasure the time I was able to spend working with @CrayTreyVids. Peace out."

    -TC Fleming. (Via Twitter)

    Joke? No? This legit?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I just saw the same tweet, retweeted by Gordon. Probably legit.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anon 2:32pm...you're hilarious! 2 things (1) Rhyner would never claim honorable mention to Corby, (2) he would never make a comment worded as such. Nice try hoss.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Rhyner did not "claim" anything. It's merely my opinion about his participation in this year's Campound. Ease up, Turbo.

Any inside baseball on why TC is leaving and where he's going?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous, I agree with you on Gordo. Kat-man needs to pull him aside and say, "Gordon, you're a treasure, but your PC persona is aggressively unfunny. Please drop it, and never pick it up again."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just thinking about the history of the compound/campout/campound. Someone should write a book.

Compound: Gordon trying to leave early and having to come back; first appearance of the tuba

Campout: Gordon throwing a dead animal carcass on Dan; catching Rhyner sneaking into a nearby cabin to sleep; Channel 8 showing up with Shon Gables to do a morning wake up call that Corby did not appreciate; drunk Danny's phone call

    ReplyDelete
  42. --------Well, we found out Gordo remarried.

I heard that too. But do we know for sure that he did divorce wife #1?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wasn't that revealed on air many years ago (divorce)?

    ReplyDelete
  44. NEVER heard one word on air about his divorce...in fact, it's been the biggest mystery debated in Ticket Forums that I can think of. Only one that has admitted divorce is Rhyner and Davie...Gordo says NOTHING.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I died laughing at 12:54PM's comment! I did the same. Thur I would click on the station and Corby was on every segment. I clicked back at a later time and caught a commercial, and the returning voice...was Corby! I was like, my god, does this guy ever go away?! And then Friday, get in my car to catch BaD...and the first voice I hear...IS CORBY!! I clicked over to ESPN and just settled for Steven A ranting about Philly 76'ers, and what a stupid play, and how the coach should be fired. I just stayed with ESPN all day.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Slinky - I thought Corby was just his usual drunk frat boy self and was actually pretty funny in the context of the Campground setting. I didnt think he was that overtly political as to upset all the intolerant right winged snowflakes that are often offended by his political rants.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lighten up, Francis. I must have missed where Slinky referenced taking offense OR politics in the context of Corbles’ ubiquity over 2+ broadcast days. I too noticed that not only was he a participant in almost every segment (and I mean every one, with the exception of early Musers) throughout the Campound, but he could not help himself from commandeering each at the first opportunity.

There’s a reason that the Little One rotates roundtable talent at the various all-hands events throughout the year. This is a case where I think the listener would benefit if Cat would sit the guy down for even one segment an hour

    ReplyDelete
  48. Why is TC leaving? - he has ambition to have a position higher than ticker guy. There aren't any open producer spots, and there aren't any open host spots at 1310. At this point he could probably find a spot at a station bigger than the one in Pensacola that he moved to last time.

Whether or not he has developed the skill set needed to be a host can be debated (I think he has), but regardless he is busting his ass to get there. It is clear from his work on IJB and his politics podcast that he loves the medium of spoken word and sound. And he has proven before that he is not afraid to make moves to get there. Will surely follow where he goes with keen interest.

    ReplyDelete
  49. hypothetical scenario - what if The Ticket was shut down tomorrow? Which host would have the most to lose?
Craig - would be fine, has no kids, probably has enough money to retire today, would just ride his bike more and open a bike shop in Grapevine
George - would be fine, probably needs to keep working 4-5 years because of his young adult children, could get a number of jobs in DFW and then fade out to Dunham manor, or he could grow his presence in the red dirt scene and turn into some kind of ambassador to small time country music
Gordon - would be fine, has no kids, but is the kind of guy that needs to have work to occupy his mind, he is so talented that he could branch into music, film, art, writing, politics, carpentry, real estate, museum curation, TV, or just keep doing radio
Donovan - unlike most of the other Ticket hosts, I don't think his career has peaked, I think he would and could move on easily into another gig and be fine
Norm - has one foot in retirement already, he would probably take up residence at a horse track half the year and travel the other half for the rest of his days, with celebrity appearances at the NFL draft and Normathon
Bob - he is the second most multi-talented person at the station behind Gordo, he has young kids and would definitely need to keep working, but the line would form to the left, and all his opportunities would be big time legit radio or TV gigs, I feel like he already regularly brushes off offers from other establishments to ply his craft, the Athletic got lucky
Dan - he has the second most to lose behind Corby, has young kids and needs to keep working,he is talented enough to get another gig where he could probably enjoy the same quality of life that he does now, but would probably have to move to another market as his opportunities would be thinner than Bob's, not because he is less talented but because he is less driven - instead of writing articles and calling hockey post game in his off time - he chills - which is just fine
Corby - he has the most to lose, I doubt he could find a radio job that approaches his Greggo-assumed-salary, his skill set is the narrowest of all the hosts - yes he is good, yes he works hard, but he got very lucky in falling into this position after Greggo blasted too much coke on his fishing trip (yes I know all the hosts got lucky with this job, but Corby is at the top of that list), in fact Corby was never offered that job - it just fell in his lap (his words not mine), he would likely have to move to another market to come close to what he has now or take a big cut to stay in DFW, he's got two young kids and that private school ain't cheap
Mike - he doesn't need to work anymore, he does this just for fun and to stay moving at this point, he would probably go start another radio station because he is pretty good at it
Danny - I know he's not a host, but deserves mention - he would definitely be fine as he has a knack for opening successful bars and would likely turn that into a full time gig, his kid is grown and independent at this point
Jake - also not a host, but deserves mention, a Ticket collapse might even be an ironic relief for him, his heart burns to have a big time host job and achieve success in this shrinking and fossilizing industry of full format (a format defined by a series of related shows, not just one personality but like 10) radio that us P1s are holding onto, he is the hardest working person at the station normalized to his God given ambition (maybe Bob works harder, but he was given a higher natural level of ambition that Jake) but he has a level of anxiety to make a big move (unlike TC), so a ticket collapse might be that spark that flings him to a big time spot

    ReplyDelete
  50. One correction - I think Gordon has a daughter with his new wife, but certainty of fact there is just as thin as who L4G is

    ReplyDelete
  51. New wife? Sure about that? I know that he has a daughter with Suzanne...has to be about 18 by now.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The daughter is from his first wife.

Right wing snowflakes. Nice try, bub. You need a better "talking point." In short, get a better better game or go home. While you're at it, stop commenting on your own comments and get back to your Reddit page. Yeah, we know....

    ReplyDelete
  53. ------Is there anybody likes the sound of their voice more than Corby?

    One person....The Fan's Jeff Cavanaugh.

BTW, the only thing that wears me out with Corby is that his Pterodactyl laugh is so over the top and forced now, that it almost makes me punch out. He may not be sub-consciously doing it, but ANYTHING said the least bit funny sends him into Pterodactyl hysterics. Was he told to play it up, because people think it's drop dead funny? I dunno....but it has become it's own personality and has become very bothersome. To "this" listener.

    ReplyDelete
  54. ----The daughter is from his first wife.

I believe that I remember the name, but will not share it. Hint: Footloose.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Remember, Donovan and Twiggy have no kids and unlike some Ticket spouses, she has a job. Hell, Donnie Doo could be the next Jim Knox/hype guy/radio sideline guy which he's done recently.

@MitchellGeorge, Bob has the most to lose, especially with the Stars coaching change and while I've got my own subscription to The Athletic, I got mine at $35/year & will likely drop it next April. Their funding is still questionable compared to income. Talented, but where can he really go in 2018? Every market has such a guy.

    As for the Campound...
1-Corby and Donovan were my favs, especially as there was no area team playoff game to "radiosimulcast".
2-I was actually interested in Jub and the HS fishing scene.
3- Please delete the, "Stupid B!tch" drop. I've grown past such mysonogy.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I thought speculating about the private lives of the Ticket guys was verboten on MTC? Has that edict changed?

I thought was another successful campound. I think the highlight for me was the introduction of the Tuba and Airhorn Killer Gordo Band.
    "What is your name?"
    "Uh. Killer."
    "What instrument have you brought?"
    "A tuba."

Killer is good-natured about getting kicked in the balls for his on air demeanor but, when he does push back that's hilarious too. His version of "sonsabitches..." is classic Killer.

    ReplyDelete
  57. So Gordon's daughter name is either Louise or Marie or Bacon?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Did they ever reveal the exact location of the Campound? I never heard them say. Corby Twitter had Lakeland Heights tagged from the first night.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was Lloyd Park again. “Reveal” was after Concert Calendar Friday evening

      Delete
  59. I assume they were at Joe Pool Lake again.

Was there every any explanation why the Musers get the marquee title for the Campound?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because they're the marquee show!

      Delete
  60. ------So Gordon's daughter name is either Louise or Marie or Bacon?

    Hint: Girl in boots

    ReplyDelete
  61. Lloyd Park thing getting old. They should give up the Campound and go back to a Compound (large rented luxury house) with webcams so we can actually see some of the deep night ticket F-arounds. Either that or go pure camping out in the woods with tensetta and all the stuff that actually goes with in camping

    ReplyDelete
  62. My guess is that the older guys (ie Norm and Mike) would 86 any and all talk of a return to a true campout.

    ReplyDelete
  63. TC is outta here, or is this a prank from cray-trey?

    TC Fleming @TC1310

Hey twitter, my last day at The Ticket is Wednesday. I'll be a few months shy of hitting the decade mark. I will always treasure the time I was able to spend working with @CrayTreyVids. Peace out.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yes, Wednesday is his last day. Looks like BaD Radio will be talking about it at ~2:35 today

    ReplyDelete
  65. DA, I'm right there with you on The Athletic. While some of the writing is good to very good (Bob, Jake, and Sean Shapiro come to mind), a lot of it, however, is pedestrian. Moreover, even the better writers have already gotten to the point where they're for all intents and purposes inventing angles and\or tackling minutia that are uninteresting, at best. Plus, the Rangers coverage, to be blunt, sucks--and as a Newberg fan, it pains me to say this (the entire Rangers beat is poor, not just Jamey). The upshot, although I'll miss Shapiro's Stars coverage and Bob and Jake's HSOs, it's not worth the money. Like DA, I won't be renewing my subscription. I do wonder what sort of fiscal legs The Athletic has (?).

    ReplyDelete
  66. As much as Corby was on, more like the Corbpound.

    ReplyDelete
  67. As someone who hails from sunny south dallas, I find it amusing how the ticket boys are categorizing the area in reference to the Nelson tournament. You'd think the area was Downtown Baghdad. Not to be entered unless absolutely necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The Camppound would, I think, benefit from the presence of Mike Sirois.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm unable to listen to the friendly Ticket this week. For those of us not in the know, what's the story on TC? Is he really leaving?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hammer: He says he's leaving to start his own business with a friend. I think tomorrow is his last day.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Where is Danny? Has he bailed on The Corby Show?

    ReplyDelete
  72. He's on vacation in DC

    ReplyDelete
  73. Downloading the IJB where they're going to talk about TC's departure....hopefullly I can beat the Ticket's 2:35 segment.

    ReplyDelete
  74. He basically said he's starting a business with a friend and can't go into details about it because it could "potentially jeopardize the future of the business" before it even gets started. He said it could be years before he's able to talk about it, what in the world could he need to keep secret that long. He also said he'd be out of state for a while.

Kinda weird, they were really vague other than that.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Who is going to get TC's job?

    Monte
    Cray Trey
    Fahey
    Other

    ReplyDelete
  76. Good news for The Chicken today. He brought nothing. Hoping BaD Radio loses one more member of IJB.

    Good riddance.

    Bring back Gen X Davey

    ReplyDelete
  77. If BaD has a voice I would guess they'd lean toward Monte. They seem to have the best established rapport with him.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Over-under on how many months before Chuck is back with BaD? We'll set the bar at 6.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Tough talk...I'll take the over for $1,000

    ReplyDelete
  80. I hope you're prepared to pay up on Thanksgiving

    ReplyDelete
  81. It has been 25 years listening to the Ticket and I don't know why this is a big deal? He was a bit player at best and his belittling attitude was off putting at best.

At the Ticket, you add sports knowledge, comedy, or public interest. He added...NOTHING except a kick in the teeth a few times a day and the frequent E-Brake.

I could name ten Ticket losses greater than him. Why were they all throwing themselves over the cliff like this is a big deal? He didn't make it in his first swim through, he was the Titanic in the second.

  82. I'm out of town. Did BaD (or any of the shows) make a big deal out of Fleming's departure? I'd be grateful for a report.

    ReplyDelete
  83. @ellislives Thank you for your courage. 100% agree.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yes they did a full hour yesterday dedicated to TC's Top Ten moments.

Musers and Norm+Donnie also talked about it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I always liked TC, but for contrary reasons, I guess. In my view he come off as so condescending for a young person. Nothing wrong with having your opinions and wanting to state them, but if he were sitting in a room with Ryhner and George, I think they would just shoot down his opinions and tell him to get some life experience. He also tried to be so clever with some of his side jokes. So, you couple that with his verbal miscues and you’d think, why does he think he’s the greatest? I guess I was always interested in when those two worlds would collide.

    ReplyDelete
  86. For those interested in such things, the Startlegram posted a story about Ben and Skin

    ReplyDelete
  87. If radio stations were like a baseball batting order lineup why do both 1310 and 105.3 have their second best batter in the 5th spot?

Both Bad Radio and Gbag Nation are so much better shows than The Hardline and Ben and Skin.

I just don't get it. I guess like always it comes back to what you are paying the player more than the players production.

Scattering Shooting while wondering whatever happened to Richie Zisk.......

    ReplyDelete
  88. The Meat Heads of the Week is the worst segment on the ticket (not counting the Hardline). Donnie needs to take charge of his show and get rid of this segment.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I wonder if TC and his buddy are getting into the cannabis "space" somewhere. That would explain leaving Texas for awhile, but not necessarily the need for extreme secrecy.

    ReplyDelete
  90. My guess is the secrecy has more to do with him not wanting the P1 knowing his business, personal or professional. After all, he's no longer in the public eye. Moreover, he probably doesn't want "funny guy" P1s fing with his endeavor. Don't blame him.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Sorry Anon @10:35, that $hit doesn't fly.

If he was that interested in total privacy, he would not only leave social media, but he'd also "divest" from his podcast business. So far, he is just taking a hiatus, allegedly.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Do they even try to get Norm to participate in the Deep Night Ticket?

    ReplyDelete
  93. He can control both his Twitter account and his podcast. Whatever he chooses to reveal about his life, he can. As to the the former, he can mute or block trolls; the latter, there is no interaction. One can be on social media and still have privacy. Bottom line, $hit flies.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Norm did drink a bottle of wine in an hour last year. At his age and health did we expect a power hour from him?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Well actually,

The reason that $hit don't fly is because TC explicitly said the secrecy was for a business reason. Check 15:00 of IJB 480. "It kills me to not be able to tell people about this. . . . It would potentially jeopardize the success of the business to talk too much about it."

    ReplyDelete
  96. I have nothing to say. Just wanted there to be 100 comments ;)

    ReplyDelete
  97. I like TC and find a lot about him to be endearing. I even appreciated his political contributions despite being on the opposite side of the aisle. But, I really wish there were a way to short this business he's starting because I believe his chances of enjoying even a little success to be quite small. He's too stubborn, arrogant, not driven enough, and lacks the charisma to make it in business. A good idea is one thing, execution is much, much harder.

  100. I understand the speculation, mainly because the hosts of the Ticket, as opposed to most other radio and TV outlets, talk about much more than sports. They pull the curtain back on a regular basis. Their appeal, the thing that makes this station work, their schtick, is that they come across as regular guys. Not sports announcers. Not someone untouchable like Vin Scully or Pat Summerall, but regular dudes you'd hang with. So they have invited us all to such speculation.

That said, I do believe I have heard that Gordo acknowledged his divorce on whatever Saturday show he was doing a few years ago. He has chosen to not say much about his wife, or ex-wife, or daughter, and I respect that.
