Hey, Confessors, sorry I've not been in good touch lately. Looks like that will continue another week or so. Had a hard time catching much of the showgrams other than a bit of the Musers and less of that than I would have liked.
So just getting another thread started here to invite you to weigh in with reactions to the Campound on The Ticket, thirteen-ten AM and ninety-six seven FM sports.
I'd still like to know why Dan was mad at Jake without having to go back and listen to the podcast.
Two outdoorsy redheads in expiation for my absence.
Dan always yells at Jake when Jake tells them they need to wrap up WTDS. It's a recurring bit. Jake happened to criticize Dan's bad Kimbo Slice joke (Bob said it was horrible too), so Dan decided to pull the dump 'n' chase.

ReplyDeleteSome genuine tension in the 5:30 segment this morning. Last night I caught a little bit of Gordon's sex call-in show last night that had George's name in its (somewhat shifting) title.
ReplyDeleteGeorge, who was not present, did not like this.
"If you do it again," he said, or WTTE, "I'm either going to sue you, or there's going to be a fight." And he added, in a non-ironic, non-winking voice, "And I'm not kidding." He said this again later in the segment.
My campaign for an end to George-baiting has failed. But at least George is fighting back. A little.

ReplyDeleteRespectfully disagree, Surly. George and Gordon do go at it from time to time, but this had a very different feel to it. When he said "And I'm not kidding," it sounded like he was not kidding. And it put Gordon back on his heels just a bit. Wasn't a lot of joshing around.
ReplyDeleteAMENDMENT: No, I don't think George would sue or punch Gordon out so yeah, from that standpoint it wasn't "genuine." But I do think he was genuinely mad at Gordon associating his name with some pretty raunchy material last night.
ReplyDeleteJub brought up suing again in the 8am segment, and clearly it was shtick and brought about chuckles from the round table. I will postulate that:
ReplyDelete-Deep down, George loves Gordon and the feeling is mutual.
-Jub appreciates Gordo's genius, and vice versa.
-Jub has even suggested on air that Gordo's devil's advocate-driven worldview has occasionally prompted Jub to change some of his own strongly held beliefs.
-Jub also thinks that Gordon is twisted, perverted, and bordering on insane.
-Jub can probably take Gordo only in small doses. These guys aren't skiing together on the weekends.
-Jub, up to a limit, embraces the on air chaos and entertainment value that ensues when personalities as different as theirs tangle on live radio. That limit is further downstream than we the listeners are led to believe.
-When Gordo baits him over the line, George can get genuinely irate on air.
-And the most speculative of points, I think, OCCASIONALLY, Goerge is fine with removing his filter and letting himself boil over on Gordo on air. It's angry, it's uncomfortable, and it's real. It also reinforces to the listener how different these two people are, and therefore makes their odd couple chemistry even more interesting. And hilarious. Another reason why George is a genius.
The "I'm not kidding" was a Lee Corso-BaD Radio quote. George and Gordon quote that infamous exchange all the time as well.

Confessors, I have no doubt that George was channeling Lee Corso. But he was channeling Lee Corso for a reason -- Corso had had his fill of Big Jerk Dan. George may have been referencing a bit, but he wasn't doing a bit. Bits are fun, but when you pick that bit to engage a colleague, you have a reason. And the tenor of the exchange was not lighthearted or ironic.

Does anyone know the origins of the often used Ticket phrase that almost everyone has used on air? It goes something like this: "Its the world we live in today sports" The "today sports" is added awkwardly to a lot of sentences. Just curious if anyone knows what this is all about? I hear it almost daily on one show or another.

ReplyDeleteNEVER heard one word on air about his divorce...in fact, it's been the biggest mystery debated in Ticket Forums that I can think of. Only one that has admitted divorce is Rhyner and Davie...Gordo says NOTHING.

I clicked back at a later time and caught a commercial, and the returning voice...was Corby! I was like, my god, does this guy ever go away?! And then Friday, get in my car to catch BaD...and the first voice I hear...IS CORBY!! I clicked over to ESPN and just settled for Steven A ranting about Philly 76'ers, and what a stupid play, and how the coach should be fired. I just stayed with ESPN all day.

I too noticed that not only was he a participant in almost every segment (and I mean every one, with the exception of early Musers) throughout the Campound, but he could not help himself from commandeering each at the first opportunity.
ReplyDeleteThere’s a reason that the Little One rotates roundtable talent at the various all-hands events throughout the year. This is a case where I think the listener would benefit if Cat would sit the guy down for even one segment an hour
Why is TC leaving? - he has ambition to have a position higher than ticker guy. There aren't any open producer spots, and there aren't any open host spots at 1310. At this point he could probably find a spot at a station bigger than the one in Pensacola that he moved to last time.
ReplyDeleteWhether or not he has developed the skill set needed to be a host can be debated (I think he has), but regardless he is busting his ass to get there. It is clear from his work on IJB and his politics podcast that he loves the medium of spoken word and sound. And he has proven before that he is not afraid to make moves to get there. Will surely follow where he goes with keen interest.
hypothetical scenario - what if The Ticket was shut down tomorrow? Which host would have the most to lose?
ReplyDeleteCraig - would be fine, has no kids, probably has enough money to retire today, would just ride his bike more and open a bike shop in Grapevine
George - would be fine, probably needs to keep working 4-5 years because of his young adult children, could get a number of jobs in DFW and then fade out to Dunham manor, or he could grow his presence in the red dirt scene and turn into some kind of ambassador to small time country music
Gordon - would be fine, has no kids, but is the kind of guy that needs to have work to occupy his mind, he is so talented that he could branch into music, film, art, writing, politics, carpentry, real estate, museum curation, TV, or just keep doing radio
Donovan - unlike most of the other Ticket hosts, I don't think his career has peaked, I think he would and could move on easily into another gig and be fine
Norm - has one foot in retirement already, he would probably take up residence at a horse track half the year and travel the other half for the rest of his days, with celebrity appearances at the NFL draft and Normathon
Bob - he is the second most multi-talented person at the station behind Gordo, he has young kids and would definitely need to keep working, but the line would form to the left, and all his opportunities would be big time legit radio or TV gigs, I feel like he already regularly brushes off offers from other establishments to ply his craft, the Athletic got lucky
Dan - he has the second most to lose behind Corby, has young kids and needs to keep working,he is talented enough to get another gig where he could probably enjoy the same quality of life that he does now, but would probably have to move to another market as his opportunities would be thinner than Bob's, not because he is less talented but because he is less driven - instead of writing articles and calling hockey post game in his off time - he chills - which is just fine
Corby - he has the most to lose, I doubt he could find a radio job that approaches his Greggo-assumed-salary, his skill set is the narrowest of all the hosts - yes he is good, yes he works hard, but he got very lucky in falling into this position after Greggo blasted too much coke on his fishing trip (yes I know all the hosts got lucky with this job, but Corby is at the top of that list), in fact Corby was never offered that job - it just fell in his lap (his words not mine), he would likely have to move to another market to come close to what he has now or take a big cut to stay in DFW, he's got two young kids and that private school ain't cheap
Mike - he doesn't need to work anymore, he does this just for fun and to stay moving at this point, he would probably go start another radio station because he is pretty good at it
Danny - I know he's not a host, but deserves mention - he would definitely be fine as he has a knack for opening successful bars and would likely turn that into a full time gig, his kid is grown and independent at this point
Jake - also not a host, but deserves mention, a Ticket collapse might even be an ironic relief for him, his heart burns to have a big time host job and achieve success in this shrinking and fossilizing industry of full format (a format defined by a series of related shows, not just one personality but like 10) radio that us P1s are holding onto, he is the hardest working person at the station normalized to his God given ambition (maybe Bob works harder, but he was given a higher natural level of ambition that Jake) but he has a level of anxiety to make a big move (unlike TC), so a ticket collapse might be that spark that flings him to a big time spot
One correction - I think Gordon has a daughter with his new wife, but certainty of fact there is just as thin as who L4G is

BTW, the only thing that wears me out with Corby is that his Pterodactyl laugh is so over the top and forced now, that it almost makes me punch out. He may not be sub-consciously doing it, but ANYTHING said the least bit funny sends him into Pterodactyl hysterics. Was he told to play it up, because people think it's drop dead funny? I dunno....but it has become it's own personality and has become very bothersome. To "this" listener.

ReplyDelete@MitchellGeorge, Bob has the most to lose, especially with the Stars coaching change and while I've got my own subscription to The Athletic, I got mine at $35/year & will likely drop it next April. Their funding is still questionable compared to income. Talented, but where can he really go in 2018? Every market has such a guy.
As for the Campound...
1-Corby and Donovan were my favs, especially as there was no area team playoff game to "radiosimulcast".
2-I was actually interested in Jub and the HS fishing scene.

Killer is good-natured about getting kicked in the balls for his on air demeanor but, when he does push back that's hilarious too. His version of "sonsabitches..." is classic Killer.

Lloyd Park thing getting old. They should give up the Campound and go back to a Compound (large rented luxury house) with webcams so we can actually see some of the deep night ticket F-arounds. ReplyDeleteDA, I'm right there with you on The Athletic. While some of the writing is good to very good (Bob, Jake, and Sean Shapiro come to mind), a lot of it, however, is pedestrian. Moreover, even the better writers have already gotten to the point where they're for all intents and purposes inventing angles and\or tackling minutia that are uninteresting, at best. Plus, the Rangers coverage, to be blunt, sucks--and as a Newberg fan, it pains me to say this (the entire Rangers beat is poor, not just Jamey). The upshot, although I'll miss Shapiro's Stars coverage and Bob and Jake's HSOs, it's not worth the money. Like DA, I won't be renewing my subscription. I do wonder what sort of fiscal legs The Athletic has (?).

ReplyDeleteHe basically said he's starting a business with a friend and can't go into details about it because it could "potentially jeopardize the future of the business" before it even gets started. He said it could be years before he's able to talk about it, what in the world could he need to keep secret that long. He also said he'd be out of state for a while.

ReplyDeleteIt has been 25 years listening to the Ticket and I don't know why this is a big deal? He was a bit player at best and his belittling attitude was off putting at best.
ReplyDeleteAt the Ticket, you add sports knowledge, comedy, or public interest. He added...NOTHING except a kick in the teeth a few times a day and the frequent E-Brake.
I could name ten Ticket losses greater than him. Why were they all throwing themselves over the cliff like this is a big deal? He didn't make it in his first swim through, he was the Titanic in the second.
Maybe it's because they were sad to see a colleague leave. I never understood the vitriol tc generated. He was not my favorite, but some people act like he ran over their dog.

I always liked TC, but for contrary reasons, I guess. In my view he come off as so condescending for a young person. Nothing wrong with having your opinions and wanting to state them, but if he were sitting in a room with Ryhner and George, I think they would just shoot down his opinions and tell him to get some life experience. He also tried to be so clever with some of his side jokes. So, you couple that with his verbal miscues and you’d think, why does he think he’s the greatest? I guess I was always interested in when those two worlds would collide.

The Meat Heads of the Week is the worst segment on the ticket (not counting the Hardline). Donnie needs to take charge of his show and get rid of this segment.

ReplyDeleteHe can control both his Twitter account and his podcast. Whatever he chooses to reveal about his life, he can. As to the the former, he can mute or block trolls; the latter, there is no interaction. One can be on social media and still have privacy. Bottom line, $hit flies.

ReplyDeleteI like TC and find a lot about him to be endearing. I even appreciated his political contributions despite being on the opposite side of the aisle. But, I really wish there were a way to short this business he's starting because I believe his chances of enjoying even a little success to be quite small. He's too stubborn, arrogant, not driven enough, and lacks the charisma to make it in business. A good idea is one thing, execution is much, much harder.

ReplyDeleteI understand the speculation, mainly because the hosts of the Ticket, as opposed to most other radio and TV outlets, talk about much more than sports. They pull the curtain back on a regular basis. Their appeal, the thing that makes this station work, their schtick, is that they come across as regular guys. Not sports announcers. Not someone untouchable like Vin Scully or Pat Summerall, but regular dudes you'd hang with. So they have invited us all to such speculation.

ReplyDeleteBefore Twitter Gordon posted on a blog. One of the links on the page was to his wife's photography business. At some point that link went away and Gordon seemed to be making obtuse references to a change in living arrangements. Could mean nothing.
