A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

I Concede Defeat [REDHEAD NSFW]
Not that I was ever going to win this battle.
Long-time Confessors are aware that I don't like Fight Night. You can search for past articles where I go into detail, but to summarize:
(1) There's enough violence in the world between strangers without The Ticket promoting it.
(2) Although it hasn't happened to date, some terrible things can happen when amateurs start hitting each other -- rather, start getting hit. Sometimes hard. A death or very serious injury in the ring, while unlikely, is by no means impossible. A tragedy for the victim, and a tragedy for The Ticket.
And by the way -- Laurence Cole is not universally admired as a referee, as proud as The Ticket seems to be of having secured his services. Laurence Cole is an Idiot; The Laurence Cole Awards
(3) It's not a great broadcast. Multiple voices talking at once, each of them hollering "OHHhhhh" when someone gets hit. Blow-by-blow guy providing inexpert narration (Norm's the best). Pathetic post-fight interviews (Jake's oration following his definitive reduction of Mike from Palookaville a notable exception).
So my objections are part weenielike, and part aesthetic.
The only good thing about it is getting to hear the magnificent Rich Phillips announcing.
But it's here to stay, at least until my Cassandra-like warnings come true.
I do tune in some years, kind of like not turning away from a train wreck. But might be tuning into the Cowboys game.
Redhead potentially NSFW, so you'll have to scroll down . . .
Did they ever fill all the cards? Seems it gets harder and harder each year to find folks who want to fight.
ReplyDeleteThat redhead has a nice pair of....boxing gloves.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't grab me as must listen radio, either.
ReplyDeleteNice redhead but her shirt is a little to long for my taste.
ReplyDeleteI agree. When it was at the Village, it sounded like a mob in a furnace and an accident waiting to happen. I guess they got out of the furnace.
ReplyDeleteThe redhead? One nostril is sightly bigger than the other and her elbows are too pointy. Totally would not do.
They used to make the recruiting of fighters part of each show. They'd have them on, interview them. That, at least, was interesting. For some reason, they don't do that anymore. I can't remember hearing it for a couple of years, anyway. Maybe they'll read the emails from them, or mention who will be fighting for the shows -- but that doesn't generate much interest.
ReplyDeleteHoping for a safe Fight Night for contenders and for The Ticket.
I agree with much of the discussion on Fight Night. It sounds like something that should be kept in ones fraternity days. Even then, it was always a little ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up Plainsman. I'm fortunate to have an office with the backs of my monitors to the doorway. But if I came up on one of my employees in the cube world with that on there monitors, I would have to say something.
BaD Radio had four female fighters on their show the other day
ReplyDeleteI was listening to the GBag Nation on the Fan today and the segment they did on wiping ones butt had me laughing more than I have in many many years. I almost flipped the station because of the topic but was laughing out loud and very glad that I stayed. Anyone else hear it ?
ReplyDeleteI caught B & S's love doll bit that had me dying!
ReplyDeleteI haven't done any weekday listening to any station other than The Ticket, but since 105.3 does pregame for preseason games, I have listened to that. It holds its own, you know? It holds its own.
ReplyDeleteSix years. That's correct. Six years from now, we'll be saying "remember when The Ticket used to rule the airwaves and our lives?" The, at that time, 30+ years of longevity will seem like a faded memory. Nostalgia. Just like Randy Galloway, et alia.
ReplyDeleteSeems like a 105.3 troll has infiltrated this site. I guess after 15 years of playing second or third fiddle to the Ticket, they will try anything.
ReplyDeleteThey have been saying that for years. I heard my man Lindsey Buckingham is in town in November, so I'll catch THL the day after to catch the Rhynes review. I hope to holy high hell it ain't a Corby review!
ReplyDeleteNo I am not a 105.3 troll
ReplyDeleteI was a P1 Day1 (went to the 94' championship game and saw the plane flying a 1310 banner on the way in and started listening the Monday the Ticket began) but unlike the people that just bitch about what they don't like even though they stay with it all day, I went and looked around for something better.
I hit 1310, 103.3 and 105.3 during the day. I used to bitch about what the Hardline had become but my life is so much better just not listening to it.
I would like my line up to be
The Musers
GBag Nation
Bad Radio
With small amounts of J Dub City, Norm and D, DAC and Hardline
People want change but unless you stop listening to crap and let the ratings drop it will not change. Just like bitching about the Cowboys. The only way to make a difference is to stop showing up at Jerry World and stop watch bad teams on TV.
Otherwise they still get paid and things stay the same.
So no, not a troll.....
1:19 PM....WORD!!!!!

ReplyDeleteVery interesting pod. Remember MaSS? Well, this pod is Matt and Scot doing an autopsy on their show's run in Birmingham. They pull back the curtain in a big way regarding how the business works, how shows are created, how many come to be on air talent, and how a show succeeds and can fail--regardless of ratings. What's equally compelling is the view they have of themselves, their show, and the usually I'll say anything Matt's muted responses (he's still employed by Cumulus). Boy, you'd think they started The Ticket Birmingham. Then again, they basically took the Ticket brand there, which was the reason they got the job (Scot channeled Rhyner, Matt, a weirder Gordo). Anyways, the pod is well worth your time.
We found out today how to shut up music expert Corby. Talk about a musician he has never heard of.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have Fan trolls here, dropping in program notes and whatnot. When it got too bad I went to monitored comments and that put a stop to it. Since I lifted monitoring it hasn't returned.
ReplyDelete322am here. I'm not a FAN troll. I'm talking about the fact that over the next six years there's gonna be major changes. Retirements, a rapidly changing medium and how it's digested and run from a business perspective. Nothing lasts forever. In six years The Ticket will be thirty. It's coming. Enjoy it while you can.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone listen to Fight Night? For all of the screaming taking place on the air, it seemed very dreary to me, worse than in years past. Was crowd into it? Hard to tell. Looks like Norm took a pass this year. Yeah, I don't like it to begin with, so I'll concede bias. But I listened to three fights and turned to an appallingly bad pre-season game.
ReplyDeleteI’m a big fan of J Scratch aka Julie Dobbs. She picks her spots, has great chemistry with BaD and Jake and let’s the game come to her. I can only imagine it will get even better. She really comes across as likable. I was looking at her background and saw she was with the Stars for a long while but was let go right before the season started. WHAT!? WHY? Of course she says nothing but good things about the Stars and of course they won’t comment on personal issues. I really wonder what the deal was?
ReplyDeleteAgree P-man. This event sucks on radio. It’s nonsensical, everybody yelling at once. I had no idea what was going on. I’m really surprised in 2018 that this is blessed by the higher ups. The risk seems to far out weigh the rewards.
ReplyDeleteYeah, when every host says over and again how this is their fave station event, you know it's a sell job. Kinda like when Razor would constantly say Kari was a world class or top ten goalie---right after giving up yet another shit goal.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone (and by everyone I mean Corby and Gordon) know that he who shouts the loudest gets into the Fight Night promos.
ReplyDeleteBut this morning the Musers are declaring it the greatest Fight Night ever, so it's probably not going anywhere.
I believe it was the biggest card they've ever had, and seems to have been the largest crowd by their reports. Seems to have taken on a new life at The Bomb Factory
ReplyDeleteand Norm's on vacation for 2 weeks (again)
Norm retiring from the Cowboys post game show and Jake taking his spot. I like Jake and Donnie together they should be good.
ReplyDeleteNice. But RIP to #IJBDal. Really gonna miss TC and Jake doing their Cowboys commentary
ReplyDeleteI think this is the last year of Norm's radio career. I bet he sticks around for the 25th year anniversary, but beyond that, he's done. Good on him. Good for Jake. But I'm sure going to miss the baiting callers, Mt. St. Hitzges, and all the rest.
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect to Dave South, Andrew Monaco, the new football play by play guy is a breath of fresh air. I believe he was part of the Spurs broadcast team before joining the Aggies. He good. Games will air on 92.1FM.
ReplyDeleteGo someplace else for your Aggies talk
ReplyDeleteWhile I have written about my disdain of Fight Night in the past, I am still really surprised that The Ticket has failed to monetize the event. They have held this event for years, but only at the Bomb Factory have they charged admission. I just look at what Barstool Sports has done with "Rough And Rowdy" and the same style event gets dozens of participants, thousands to pay admission in WV, NC, and Ohio, and a large audience pay $15.99 via streaming.
ReplyDeleteI am far from a fan of Barstool Sports content, but they are basically The Ticket junior and have been able to monetize very similar content to a greater level.
Surly: It's more about a loss of content for Homer Call than Aggie talk.
ReplyDeleteI hope the new Friday at 2:30 football picks will work, but I fear it will be dominated by you-know-who.
ReplyDeleteWho's participating this year?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like they are going to have someone from every Ticket varsity show
ReplyDeleteSomebody better do a welfare check on Shaggy. UT just list, AGAIN, to Maryland.
ReplyDeleteWe can all breathe a little easier. Corby did not make the cut for Texas Radio Hall of Fame. But Bo and Jim did.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone actually think Corby would make any hall of fame? Maybe Coat Rider Hoffman!
DeleteLol...hall of fame! Damn spell check
DeleteGood for them! They WERE my middle and high school mornings. Long before Stern and then Skip and then The Musers, it was Bo, Jim, Professor B Woogie, and the rest of the characters that kept me in stitches. Sure, in retrospect it was all low brow and probably not that funny. But as a kid I found it funny as all get out. Rhyner always gives those dudes props, so you know they're legit.
ReplyDeleteCrap! I left out the greatness of Jack Locker Room Lindstrom. He was their Tickerman.
ReplyDeleteCan we boycott Corby?
