BLOG INTERRUPTION: Technical Question for Streaming Experts

PRELIMINARY NOTE:  Myrna Loy, today's red, would have been 115 today.

*     *     *

For some years I have done a lot of my Ticket listening on the stream via bluetooth.  I stream from the website -- not from the app -- on my phone.  This has worked great until recently.

Now I find that when the Ticket website leaves the screen -- let's say I'm out on my bike listening with a bluetooth bud and the screen (but not the stream) goes to sleep -- the stream breaks up into little bits.  No content is lost, but the voices all experience gaps that makes them sound as though they've slooooowed down their talking because of all the little interruptions.  If I turn the phone back on (it was never off, just not displaying anything) and return to the Ticket home page, the stream continues playing normally.

Formerly, the screen would go to sleep and the stream would be unaffected.

Any suggestions?  I'm trying to remember why I decided not to use the app.  Maybe that's the best way to listen to the stream?

Thanking you in advance.

Happy birthday, Myrna.

  1. I use the app. It works great 99% of the time.

  2. Tried the app today. It worked for 15 seconds then began to buffer itself into eternity.

  3. Do we have some reason to think that Norm is unwell other than his absences (which may be reason enough)? Try to listen 10-noon but it's hit-or-miss lately. Has anyone said anything?

    ReplyDelete
  4. A second consecutive Mavs loss. I assume our pets' heads are falling off?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Seems like he does miss a lot of shows, and has so for over a year now. I hope he's OK.

Muh muh muh my muh Myrna!

  6. I will bluetooth the website whenever the all is crapping out. Im using ios 12 something (because im on the Junes Whereabout unknown train). I’ve never experienced that particular issue.
But i still say to use the app as it greatness comprared to web streaming, even streaming on a pc is worse.

  7. When you say you're using "The App", do you mean the Ticket 1310 app, or the SportsDay app?

There's no reason to use anything other than SportsDay. Allows you to rewind 59 minutes and then fast forward through commercials and segments you want to skip.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thanks for the inquiry, Surly. I mean The Ticket app, not SportsDay. I'll give it a spin. Thanks again.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah I don't think many people use or even know about the "Ticket 1310" app. When on-air folks talk about the app they mean SportsDay

    ReplyDelete
  10. No one has said anything about Norm's absences. I think anytime someone of Norm's age & medical history has frequent absences there is cause for concern. I hope it is nothing serious.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Pman, you know I am always up for a Myrna Loy pic.

I had the same thought about Norm last week. I know he had the trip planned, then cancelled, and was hoping that was the reason. Agree with KDF, has to be concern where Norm is concerned. At some point, he is going to have to step aside.

  12. Another vote for the Sportsday app. It's dang-near my exclusive way to experience the Ticket these days.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sportsday app all the way. Like others have said, works for me 99% of the time. And it seems that lately when there were issues with streaming it wasn't the app - it was streaming meltdown at the station of some sort.

It works so well, in fact, that I will typically bluetooth/stream the station to my car stereo on the drive in rather than listen live. My drive starts on the outskirts of their range, at an hour before they can turn up the output but i stick with it as I get close to the metropolis all the way in.

Of course, it hasn't been an issue since March as I've been WFH. But the Sportsday app lets me back up an hour when I get up, catch the Musers from the beginning (or near that), and skip commercials to catch up.

My wish? When the app gives me a breaking news notification, clicking said notification opens my web browser and takes me to the DMN website where said story is typically behind the paywall. Since I don't subscribe I then have to manually fire up the app and go to the DMN articles there. The same article is almost always there, or will appear shortly. Oh well, can't blame them for trying I guess.

    Have a good day.

  14. Anybody know what happened with Tim Cowlishaw over at ESPN Radio? Can't believe he's gone and blowhard Steve Dennis survived.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Source for that? I can't find any news on it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Have no scuttlebutt on the why but it's true. Cowlishaw is donzo, the show is still called DAC (Steve Dennis and Company), and Gribbs is still pudusa dis show. Over-under October crash landing? I say under.

  20. "Mostly mine." Translation: I didn't see this coming. I'm still in somewhat of a state of shock over their decision.

I bet he was trying to get X out of contract negotiations, thought there's no way management would ball because he's the lead columnist in the local daily and on the national stage via management's own platform, and found out Friday that he grossly misread the situation. A la Cuban and the NBAPA post the '11 Larry O'Brien.

  21. Isn't Steve Dennis the dude with extreme Small-Mouth?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't know about the size of his mouth but his volume and his opinion of himself are sky high.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Very off-topic, but ESPN radio is really shaking things up. Golic and Wingo are gone as of Monday. NY Post says the morning show will be Keyshawn Johnson, Jay Williams and Zubin Mehenti. And in the afternoons Mike Greenberg and Max Kellerman will each have their own two hour show.

Who knows what the Dallas station will choose to carry, but it seems they have run the national morning show for more than 15 years.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bill Jones is He Who Has Small Mouth. 350's assessment is dead. solid. perfect.

  25. Imagine listening to Steve Dennis on purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Did anyone hear Mike R on noon-3 earlier this week? It was highly touted and I had hoped to tune in but couldn't.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I thought it's tomorrow? I hate to admit this, but I'm just not that interested in Mike any longer. I mean the guy for the most part checked out the last 5+ years, pulls the most dramatic and frankly rather immature not so "Irish Exit," and then proceeds to be more visible than ever. All the while repeating Spence Kendrick No One Believed In Us tales and some such to any and all outlets. As was said a few threads ago: Revere what the man did; thank him profusely for it; he's a genuine media living legend who merits every accolade; but that doesn't mean every appearance is gold, every utterance, Sagacity Inc. Give Monty the airtime. Hell, give it to Seabass. Mike's had a lifetime of it. And he decided to let the last half decade of it (allow that to sink in...a half decade) pass/piss on by....And yet now he's feeling it? Like I and others have said, he's a giant but he chose to move on and did it in his own way and truth be told left everything a mess. Sorry, as bad as HL 2.0 had become, 3.0 is awkward to say the least -- ratings be damned, as those are more a function of the competition (which just got even easier with Cowlishaw's departure) than excellence. They all may truly enjoy each other as they claim, but there are fundamental chemistry issues. BaD 2.0 is difficult to understand. Echo chambers tend to get that way. And with the inevitability of TC's return....I digress.

I love ya, OGW. You might not think it from this comment, but I do. It's just, well...........

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with most of 7:08's take. However, I AM interested in INTERESTED Mike. What puzzles me is that he seems very interested these days and has a lot to say about a lot of subjects. Why he chose not to for the last ten plus years-and in so doing made his show and his station worse for the wear-I haven't a clue. I say "ten plus years" because in my opinion the check out began about a year or so prior to Greggo's firing. I've made this claim several times here and I'll make it again: Rhyner checked out the moment he decided to start Petty Theft.

The upshot is, these days I tune into any and all things Mike Rhyner. He's back and back in a big way and I'm loving it. I only wish he would have found what he lost before his so-called retirement. The Ticket needed/needs it. The P1 needed/needs it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @840
My theory is that he relishes and thrives in the bunker mentality, the Us v. Them, the nobody's giving us a chance? we'll show 'em mentality. Once The Ticket got on top, remained there for a few years, and it became obvious that due to the (lack of) competition not only was it going to remain there for the foreseeable future but also there was nothing that could come within even 10 foot pole touching distance to it, he got bored. Enter Petty Theft and the cavalcade of ensuing tribute projects. Enter too Disinterested Mike.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 7:08's take is really bad because this is about Dan wanting to work with his leader Mike. Think about Dan's history, what Mike meant to Dan, and then Dan nearly leaving the station and choking up during WTDS.

BAD 2.0 is not hard to understand.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah Mike R is on today, Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dear 738,

What on earth are you talking about? Moreover, how old are you?

    Signed,
    Rationality

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think it's pretty easy understand why Mike Rhyner has so much to say now, but very little when he was on every day for four hours. The guy, clearly, needs to pick his spots and refresh. When he's able to do that, he's good and energized. When he was battling with Corby and Danny every day for five days straight per week, he checked out. He's obviously much better at having more time to formulate his thoughts and not have to churn out content segment after segment. That was quite clear when Corby damn near took over every single segment on the Hardline 2.0. I like hearing Rhyner's voice and I enjoy his personality. He can come back anytime he wants and I welcome it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hear you, 1120, but your analysis paints Mike as weak-willed, wallflowerish, and not the clear alpha dog that he is. It was through his sheer will that The Ticket got off the ground. It was through his determination that the guys he knew he needed to make it work got onboard and stayed onboard, even when things looked bleak (especially before it went live). MIke has a voice and is not afraid to sound off and sound off loudly. You're right in that he does need a partner, like Greggo, that allows him to formulate his thoughts. But he had the authority and the respect to, at any time, say "give me my space." He chose not to. Mike Rhyner has no qualms with telling ANYONE to fuck off. He only lets something go on because he either doesn't mind it or he wants little to nothing to do with it. The Ticket, The Hardline, are HIS children. He wouldn't just let Corby and Danny box him out. Why? Out of deference? Hardly. No. He was bored. He needs to be told he can't do it. He needs to be the outsider. Else he's part of the problem and not the solution.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @1240 Yeah, you're absolutely right about him being the genesis of The Ticket and he certainly carried more weight than anyone in terms of who he was at that station because of that. I didn't mean to imply he was weak willed, but more so, perhaps, a bit tired and didn't really believe in what he was doing anymore. Time away from broadcasting has probably made him realize he misses it and that has re-energized him. What he does now, I have no idea, but I am certainly going to check out whatever it is he does.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Checked with a couple of sources. Sources not perfect but were not aware of any major changes in any of the shows, and sources were not aware of major Norm health issues. But source warned that Contagion-related absences meant the grapevine was getting less action than usual.

Let you know if I hear anything further.

Yeah, I'm not understanding these recent comments, either.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The candy bar made on a nearby planet could be a Three Musketeers and the veiled and cryptic insinuation: The Musers are splitting up. I don't see it. Frankly, I don't see much of anything changing except, perhaps, Norm stepping down due to health concerns.

  45. As a remote/iheartradio listener, I’m completely checked out on THL, there is simply no chemistry. It’s as if Bob is slotted into the old format rather then dreaming up a new show. When businesses grow and expand they don’t extend their culture, they adapt it to reflect the change. The culture of THL is the same - all about Corby dominating the airwaves with vacuous opinions.

  48. Speaking of newsy things, did Mike R ever show up on today's Hardline? I was tuned in when they thought they were going to be speaking with him, or claiming they were, but he didn't jump on and I had to break off.

  52. I haven't listened enough to Ticket, or any other sports station lately, to comment or even read MTC (but I sure hope Plains stays around) This is first time I've clicked on in months. But I got to say, anon August6 7:08 pm, and August7 11:20 am pretty much sums up my opinion! And heard today that Cowlishaw did retire from radio; probably had all of Dennis he could stand. Dennis's annoying ass was the only reason I occasionally switched back to Hardline. But then Corby always drove me away.

  59. SKA ( formerly known as DA)August 17, 2020 at 7:41 AM

    @subjunctive mood,
I am assuming that the seven-year relationship between Cumulus and Disney became too much for Cumulus financially. They were paying Disney $7M/year to operate 103.3 and COVID-19 wasn't giving them enough sponsors to cover the costs and not having the Mavs for four months didn't help either.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Seems like The Musers get A LOT of vacay. I wonder if this was a voluntary or involuntary deal?

    ReplyDelete
  61. 4 weeks is pretty typical for someone with a company for 25+ years

    ReplyDelete
  62. This one (and I'm guessing one week of the two-weeker earlier this summer) is probably a forced one as they would typically be at training camp right now, or maybe just back from it depending on what the original training camp start date was. They typically all take a week just before training camp starts because they are basically on vacation lockdown (other than a day here and there) during football season until the holidays hit.
