Gone But Not Drydock

REMINDER: "ANONYMOUS" COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED

  1. I've actually been able to listen a little more lately, but no penetrating insights for you. Thread needed a little freshening up.

I'm going to be gone through mid-August, but should be able to check comments daily and maybe catch the stream now and again.

Thank you for being civil, Confessors.

Now THAT's a red. Please, no more of that AI crap.

To pick up where the tail end of previous thread left off, there is no reason whatsoever to hold onto any part of your corporeality. No one is going anywhere. No one is making a major announcement. Don't take the cheese. Don't feed the trolls. And for fuck's sake, be civil.

  3. Incessantly volume shooting double entendres and bathroom humor, I struggle to see the appeal of GXD. You can tell Bob gets exasperated by it, doing a sigh-muted chuckle while trying to make a genuine point. Patience of Job wearing thin.

    1. I love GXD, but yesterday (Tuesday) he really was a bit much and completely frustrated Bob. Especially during Game 7 NHL talk. Let’s cut that back a little Davey…

    2. I can handle GXD without Corbie. I think GXD and Bob are actually as enjoyable as 3 -7 can get for me. Maybe its just my noted distaste for Coby but when its the three of them GXD takes a step backwards and down in quality.

You're not wrong, WilliePep. However, that's the very thing Skateboard Man and Skateboard Son crave. To them, it IS what makes TT's ticker tick. It's the tenuous thread that keeps them from shedding all parts of all dayparts and turning their focus exclusively toward TDZ. If sosh is a meaningful quantifier, a real reflection of an endeavor in these here the mid-20s, then DZ Fever is beginning to cool -- regardless of the paid DF numbers. Might be something to keep the proverbial eye on. Might be. On that tip: Must say that the 12-15 Jacobins who chiefly inhabit DZ reddit could make for an interesting Master's thesis or even doctoral dissertation for an aspiring psychology grad student.

BUT THE BOYS NEED DOOR DASH, BESPOKE SALMON FROM ONLY THE PUREST OF FAROE ISLAND WATERS, PUTTING GREEN LIKE LAWNS, AND LIKE TONS OF DAKOTA UNDERWEAR. EVEN IF THEY STOP PUMPING OUT SODES, I WON'T STOP GIVING. I'VE FORGOTTEN HOW TO THINK FOR MYSELF. I'M SUCH A DF. ONE TIME, WHEN THE BOYS.........

I'm not a frequent contributor here. But I'm a pretty consistent reader. I have a question for TDZ aficionados. Do you think those two are happy? Much has been said about their income and such. I don't care about that. Let's assume they are making plenty of money. Enough to make each happy and comfortable, for their own prospects and their childrens'.

I wonder about their thoughts about their own relevance. Not long ago they had a top 4/5 market aware of who they were and what they said. Every day. They were the subject of water cooler talk in a major US market. Now, their claim to fame is 6,000 subscribers, who listen to them, or not. Who the hell knows, as long at the auto-deduct credit card payment guess though?

You think they are happy with that? A D-magazine article is nice for Jake, but let's be real. If you aren't looking to find the newest BBQ restaurant in town, do you really care about D magazine? I think not.

I wish them well. And I think Dan's probably fine. He's in his mid to late fifties.

But former Ticket intern, relatively young Jake? The kid who worked so hard to someday be relevant? And just a few years after finally becoming relevant? Gone. Might be some remorse there, I think. Just my opinion.

Well, Buff, I'd say at the moment it's an "both/and" thing.

      No, they dont because:
They're still in the honeymoon phase of the thing and are being "Boys-ed" out of their collective yin yang by a number of weirdly to the point of pathological early adopter zealots. They're also freshly off being courted by a podcasting network of sorts, have at least one national celeb kissing their tuckuses on a semi-regular basis, have the publicly expressed support of most all ex-Ticket employees and some prominent-ish to prominent local media members, and can point toward the 6k+ subs they've garnered by really doing not much to nothing to recruit them. So in those ways, I'd imagine they're feeling pretty good about the decision and their future.

      Yes, they do because:
Of the very thing you stated regarding Jake, for starters. Because they've done their homework and know how this sort of endeavor can turn on a dime. After all, it's entirely predicated upon subs always subbing, bringing in more subs to both increase revenue and to replace lost subs, and the fickleness, the transience of the attention span and tastes of your average online consumer (one minute X is the best thing ever and can do no wrong, the next X is meh or worse). The thought of "What happens when the intial hype dies down?" must be floating around their minds. Unlike working at The Ticket, here they have no safety net. If the ratings are poor for some months at The Ticket, no big deal, it's the cost of doing business. Not so now. Both live extremely comfortable lifestyles, both have many big ticket, affluent suburbia expenses that never stop coming. That has to be in the back of their minds, at the very least, if not at the forefront. There's also a little thing called a 401K or the equivalent. No one ever brings that up when going on about The Boys's 6K subs = up to $60K per month. Don't forget to figure in Blake with all this, either. Ditto anyone else involved who's getting paid. (Aside: does anyone genuinely know if the interns they're taking on get paid, and if so, how much? Insurance included? Are these "living wages"?)

There are many other reasons they might regret the move. Or at least why regret might rear its head on certain late nights while having a drink or three. Presently, I believe the thought that they made the right move prevails. But absolutely "yes," there surely are creeping doubts that linger in recesses. By the end of '25, I'm fairly certain we'll know which "side" won out.

    2. It seems really weird that people are lauded for striking out on their own when they leave the comfort of a large corporation to start their own tech firm or the like but somehow when you commit the mortal sin of leaving a niche fun radio station we all worry about Dan and Jake's 401k. I don't think it matters how well TDZ ultimately does as people will assume that D & J will have terminal regret because....Summer bash...Ticketstock.... Campound...

    3. No, really, I WAS at that one show in '87June 28, 2024 at 9:50 PM

Why is it weird to attempt to answer a query in a -hopefully- thoughtful way? Where, exactly, did I claim that Dan and Jake have made a horrible mistake, will most certainly have regrets -- if not already drowning in remorse? Answer: nowhere. What is weird is your dichotomized, black and white thinking. No one here is worried about "The Boys'" 401K or lack thereof. It's an aspect of the picture that until now has yet to be mentioned. A rather important one, at that. It's not a criticism. It's called a conversation, pertinent analysis (admittedly armchair in nature), and the offering up of a (again, admittedly and obviously) subjective opinion. Please, point out where either Dan or Jake were either disparaged or mocked or called fools. In fact, I even say that I think presently they believe they made the correct decision. You know what I think? I'm thinking you're one of the early adopter zealots. I'm thinking you feel a healthy dose of agitation bordering on anger for anyone that deigns to disagree with your 69 modus vivendi. That's cool. No problem whatsover with you people. We all have our passions. But next time you might want to look in the mirror before you press "publish" when making such claims about others. You might very well be talking about yourself.

  7. No. They’re miserable. And they’ll continue to be miserable. They walked from a place paying them to simply be them. Listen/watch that horror show of Jake and Dan trying to get along with those spares in Austin. It is hard to watch.

Also the Musers aren’t retiring stop with that nonsense.

  9. Reddit is not a good source for intelligent conversation (for the most part). However:
    The Ticket: ~20,500 members
    DZ: ~3500 members
    Your Dark Companion:20!
The Ticket numbers seem high if one assumes listenership is aging along with hosts. DZ numbers are interesting to me because I thought their demographic would skew both younger and active on Reddit, so larger presence online. But Mike Rhyner. Twenty. Legacies can also crash and burn.

    1. Not hard data but easy to see with your own eyes....

The Ticket --25 thereabouts regular contributors
      DZ --5 thereabouts regular contributors
YDC (Patreon Chat) --6 thereabouts regular contributors

Legacies can and do crash and burn. While nowhere near the legacy of Mike Rhyner, Dan and Jake have a legacy nonetheless. From what I've been hearing and seeing (I mean literally, as in subbing to their Patreon), I'm here to tell you the crash and burn isn't too terribly far off in the distance. So much so, that if you have a decent set of binoculars and know what you're looking for, you are now able to make out the faint traces of it on the horizon.

Skibidi with a heaping helpin' of hawk tuah and Vladdy will be happy with that.

Wondering if there's anything we can do for our Boys while they're away on drydock? Maybe we could email Cat and see if we can all pitch in and pay for their lawn care whilst on vacay? Obviously, he knows where they live and could coordinate it, as long as we cover the cost. I'm also going to hit up Gordo in his Twitch stream chat and see if he and/or Craig and/or George need anything. Personally, I'd rather not pay my electric bill than even entertain the thought somewhere in the back in the innermost recesses of my mind that any of our Boys might experience any sort of inconvenience or have to pay for something out of pocket that we P1s could offset. Come on, P1s, our Boys need us!
