Yes, I Still Listen to The Ticket

163 comments:

  1. However, I seem to be busier and busier as the months go by, so -- I confess -- my listening is more sporadic than it used to be. I try to grab some of each show over the course of the week -- not so much weekends lately.

Which leads me to my chief regret about my Ticket listening, which is that I have not gotten to know the latest JV lineup very well. Justin Montemayor, of course, excluded, and he remains a favorite wherever he appears.

I ask the Confessor for some guidance here, at the risk of having to wade through the usual that I'm not a good P1, I suck because some of these guys have been on board for a long time, and other obloquy questioning my bona fides as a Ticket listener.

But I'll give a try anyhow: Give the Confessorate your thoughts on the range of JV talent the station is slinging these days.

Also: I think JV guys may drop by this site more frequently than do the biggies. So let your civil, thoughtful voice be heard.

  2. Detour: Anyone out there watching "The Beast in Me" or "The Price of Confession"?

Liking the former a lot, began nodding off during the latter, skipped directly from E6 to E12.

Detty - Doesn't jump in much, but that makes sense. This is much the same as Fernando, rarely spoke on air. I don't have much time to listen on the weekends, so I don't hear him there. He is fine, probably needs more air time to make a bigger impression on me, but don't see that happening on the Musers which is what most people want in a producer for them.

Travis - I rather enjoy when he does news and Friday Frivolity. I think he has gotten progressively better over the past year. He is a good story teller (thinking back to the stories of his dad leaving him in a strip club parking lot with his gameboy). I would say he just needs some more time on air, but he has potential.

Monty - clearly the leader in the clubhouse of the producers. Seemingly most like him. I agree, he has good sports takes and has a gordo-like edginess to him. He is the most ready to jump into a host role.

DJ - I will admit, I have liked DJ from the start. Again, I think he is a good story teller, pretty decent on sports talk. I am in the camp that I would have preferred the DJ/Monty WIP as a show over the Sweet Spot, but understand why they didn't do it.

With that said, I listened to as much SB coverage as I could. I really think Sean and Mino are better than they were two years ago. I think for midday, they are fine, but neither would be in consideration for AM/PM drive, IMO.

Donnie and Matt seem to have built some nice chemistry too. I know Matt rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but he has good takes and his goofiness helps with the laughs. Donnie is great and a prime candidate for an AM/PM drive time slot when one opens up.

I think that is most of them. The Musers will be impossible to replace if they were all to go, but I think they have enough pieces that they could do ok. I could see a Donnie/Matt/Monty morning show.

    2. Frankly, while EA, Baldy and Lando are all there, I don't think any of them would expect to jump into a host role from their current position. I would consider them more of the freshmen team. They all have potential, but they need to keep working on their games and wait in the minors.

EA provides lots of humor with his falling asleep in the producer chair and his super hot sports takes, but he needs more polish to get to host level.

Lando and Baldy IMO are in that same class as well, but I don't think either of them demand the spotlight as much as EA does. Baldy maybe does a little more with his jumping in on the musers on occasion, sometimes with wrong info. Both do a fine job on tickers and I think have potential. I think they just need more time. I wouldn't say any of these three need to be let go, I think for what they do, they do a fine job. They are simply farther away from a host role than the previous post, IMO.

  21. Sooooooo. I've been listening to the now 7 part and still more to come CdS episodes on TT and th e state of DFW radio (they will soon get into TF - hoping they talk openly and honestly about the founding of the station). Each episode is roughly an hour and they get right into it from the jump. No first 10 minutes fuckery. Let me begin by saying most of it is interesting, some of it revelatory, but none of it is scandalous or derogatory toward Ticket staff or management (i.e., Cat). Critical at times, yes, but you will find no ad hominem, which I think is the right approach.

As I said, each episode runs between 50 mins to a bit over an hour. That's a lot of time spent on one topic. And again, with more to come. This results in a lot of overlap and retelling of either the same or similar stories. Regardless, the series is worth your time. There is so much information and personal feelings on their stint there that it would require a novella's worth of comments to go through it all, even if done succinctly.

    Here are my standout takeaways:

I'll begin with the one that jumped out and slapped me in the face. During the 1st episode, when discussing if they had any regrets leaving TT, Mike made the admission that maybe he and Danny were best suited in that situation as producers who also proxy as hosts, but not hosts proper. Danny responded by saying to the effect, "We just might find out." He trailed off before finishing his thought, and Mike sort of coyly, almost cryptically, concurred. That alone stood out. But when coupled with what came before and after, those words really struck me. Prior to this, while Danny said he had no regrets leaving, Mike admitted if he knew now what he didn't know then, he probably wouldn't have left. Both then went out of their way to praise Cat's competence, saying he was a great boss but that his bedside manner isn't the gentlest and that he became more corporate as the years rolled on. Still, even then they said they understood that he's only doing his job and has bosses himself that he must obey if he wants to keep his hard earned, well deserved job. Much of the episode came off as what I can only describe to be an open letter to Cat/TT that if there's a path back, they're interested. Either that and/or because of what Danny said, there is some sort of backchannel discussion going on. Listen for yourself and see if you agree. Like I said, it made me sit up. The other thing that stood out was their assessment of middays. They went out of their way to say Mino and Sean were deserving of their positions, great dudes, and how they are rooting for them. But added that the show sounds like a two hour ticker. Cannot disagree. As to the rest of the hosts, nothing but positive things. Both went out of their way to praise Junior MIller. Specially Danny, who claimed he's based his radio persona on Junior. The only host they danced around and only said his sports acumen was high is Matt. All of which only furthered my assertion that a path back to TT is perhaps not an impossibility. Time and perspective can heal all wounds - on both ends. The final thing was how once they told Cumulus they were leaving, suddenly they were offered packages to stay that would've (eventually) led to them earning somewhat commensurate salaries as they did at TF. Not as much, but in the general vicinity. That was interesting. It didn't totally contradict the narrative told, but nor did it totally cohere.

The other six episodes go over and unpack their timelines at TT. To reiterate, all are worth your time if interested in such things. But the first one is the money shot, for sure.

    5. Thanks, Tricky. So you agree that the 1st episode and much of what follows kinda comes off as either an open letter to Ticket mgmt and/or to The Ticket staff or that there might be some very early backchannel talks going on?

      Delete
    6. Denny, I feel like Danny went pretty hard at Cat during the Mod A/Mod B episode and he also had an open text he had sent to Cat that had not been read yet. I feel like any bridges between Danny and Cat have been permanently burned but I don't get the impression Danny really cares to go back.

Mikey on the other hand was a bit more diplomatic during the discussions but I think his next move would be to try to The Fan versus trying to go back to the Ticket. I say this because Mikey has been very complimentary of the Fan and has said that he listens to it more than he does the Ticket. So if he has any interest in going back to radio, I think it would be that route.

Don't expect any ratings anytime soon...

    # Cumulus Faces Months Without Nielsen Ratings As Legal Fight Drags On.

This year is shaping up to be one in which many Cumulus Media salespeople will be hitting the streets without any ratings data in hand. In court filings last week, attorneys for both Cumulus and Nielsen agreed to series of legal deadlines in their ongoing dispute that will see their legal fight stretch to mid-year, and potentially beyond.

District Court Judge Jeannette Vargas approved a series of paperwork deadlines that begin in March and continue through the end of May. The courthouse timeline isn’t unusual, but a radio group the size of Cumulus without ratings for many of its markets is. The company’s contract with Nielsen expired Dec. 31, and that has left stations in Continuous Diary Measurement (CDM) markets without any numbers by which to use in their sales pitches to clients or programming decisions. In large PPM-measured markets like Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta, where ratings are likely most critical, the data remains flowing.

For Nielsen, the short-term risks may be less. It scored a win earlier this month when a federal appeals court granted the company’s request to lift a preliminary injunction [put in place in December by Vargas](https://www.insideradio.com/free/nielsen-wins-short-term-relief-in-cumulus-media-antitrust-case/article_d992cc51-817a-4224-802c-eace04477e99.html). The Second Circuit ruling meant that Nielsen is again allowed to use the policy tying national ratings with the purchase of local market data while the legal challenge advances.

Cumulus declined to comment, but when its antitrust suit was filed in the fall, CEO Mary Berner expressed confidence in legal case it had brought. “We feel strongly about the merits of our claim and we look forward to arguing the case in court,” she said on an earnings call with analysts.

In an [antitrust lawsuit filed in October](https://www.insideradio.com/free/cumulus-sues-nielsen-over-alleged-radio-ratings-antitrust-violations/article_3ac8cf13-b610-4844-bc1f-6ae9130fbf47.html), Cumulus asked the court to block Nielsen from implementing a tying policy that conditions access to national radio ratings data on the purchase of separate local radio ratings data. Cumulus calls it a “textbook abuse of monopoly power” that harms competition by preventing radio stations from freely choosing the local radio ratings data providers they want. The lawsuit cites a 36% increase in Westwood One’s national ratings data in 2022, along with consistent subsequent price hikes tied to Nielsen’s “tying policy” that links national and local rating products.

Nielsen has defended its policies however, accusing Cumulus of [waging a “lawfare” campaign](https://www.insideradio.com/free/nielsen-accuses-cumulus-of-waging-lawfare-in-ratings-dispute/article_39f734b5-09f2-404c-b1fa-e47bed3de4c9.html) and suggesting the radio group has sought a 50% reduction in its fees. In a [counterclaim filed earlier this month](https://www.insideradio.com/free/nielsen-claims-cumulus-gave-crown-jewel-ratings-data-to-eastlan/article_d61b8042-1ea5-476d-99dc-cd2c0c2fb12a.html), Nielsen has also alleged that Cumulus breached the terms of its now-expired 2023 contract when it shared details of the ratings product with its rival Eastlan Ratings. Cumulus and Eastlan have not yet responded to those allegations.
