Let's All Take a Break for Some Green Tail Shiner

All right, things are getting a little too testy around here for my liking.

We all need to calm down a little for some Ticket fun from the archives.

I've written about this a couple of times in past posts.  For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, and for those who do, the good men at The UnTicket have the goods as they usually do.  I re-listened to this a few minutes ago and I laughed out loud again, and not just one or two giggles.

9/11 was unquestionably a worthy Number One moment at The Ticket, but here is my personal favorite moment on The Ticket of the last ten years:

Green Tail Shiner Non-Explanation with Embedded Replay of Original Reference with Bonus Classic Michael Gruber Background Chortling

The link is actually Mike's Mind on the day following the original reference, but I believe most if not all of the original Green Tail Shiner reference is replayed here.

So if, on my deathbed, my final words are "Green Tail Shiner," as they may well be, you won't need a whole damned movie to figure out what I was talking about.

  1. Hey Pman, what happened to that write up you were going to do about WTDS? You only teased it like 2 years ago...

  2. When the infamous lineup change was ominously teased during the Orphanage/Sirois mix, I couldn't wait to jump on here for speculatin'. Unfortunately, boxes won't unload themselves and medicinal marijuana won't dispense itself, so alas, I haven't been able to frolic around here in the "testy" muck. Yet today, in a moment of procrastination, I clicked the MTC link, and Holy Schwarzenegger, was my mind just blown with unbridled joy.
Pman, you are my unquestioned leader, and now I must stop looking at dinosaurs and pay some bills.
Stay hard, confessors; I love you all.

Kinda floored by the Leno seggie on THL today. Had no idea that Mike and Danny harbored so much elitism. Couldn't give a rip about them not liking Leno, questioning why anyone would like Leno, or being glad he's leaving. What floored me was the snark about small town people and "uncool" colleges or colleges located in "uncool" towns. Funny to hear 60 something Mike and 46 year old Danny talk about what the old folks watch. Look in the mirror, fellas. Corby I expect as much. Overall a pretty pathetic moment in HL history.

  5. Leno is awful. It's not being elitist. It is the thing that makes your grandparents in the middle of nowhere in Iowa chuckle. I don't honestly know anyone who watches him or didn't hate him other than a few older relatives in the literal sticks in East Texas. I was stoked with the segment as it's been an endless mystery to me and my friends who the hell watches Leno voluntarily.

  6. Is Hee Haw on? said...

"Can anyone provide any thought on why TC was not offered the board op job over Mino? I assume that is a better position than hosting the top 10, right?"

Why do you think what is basically a technical position is better than being an on-air personality?

TC can send tapes of the Top 10 to any station in America that is hiring. A board-op can send drops.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes but a few things. First, if he was a board op he would be a board op on a drive time show. Second, as we know, THL board op job is a springboard to get more daily on air time and being able to "participate" in the show (see also: Jake) as opposed to the taped one man in a room by himself show that is the Top 10. Last, you assume that TC only wants to be an on air person. I'm sure he'd prefer that but being a tech guy on a drive time program is bigger than the Top 10. Being an on air guy isn't necessarily the only road to success. Think about ticker guy turned management Rich or now promoted actual engineer on salary Killer.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Someone on another forum (not ticket centric) said TC likes doing the Top 10 and didnt want the board op job. That person has proven reliable with ticket info in the past

  9. It appears Mino will not be shy about playing drops.

I guess, 645, you either don't understand what 'elitist' means or didn't bother to read my comment prior to making yours (I stated explicitly I don't give a rip about what they said about Leno and his show and talent). It had nothing to do with Leno; it had everything to do with the depiction of certain peoples--made by certain people who pretty much fit the description of the ones they're making fun of. Pot calling the kettle black going on as well. I mean Danny never finished college and Mike went to community college(s) and some how after a dozen years scraped out a diploma from UTA, which at that time was basically a comm college. Danny's from a small town; for him Dallas was where pizza and bad hair rock dreams were made. Mike's a life long Dallasite who used to put on a fake hipster voice for the radio. Danny does his damnedest not to sound country but never can quite lick it. Like I said, pot calling the kettle black, and elitist.

And the fact that you and your cohorts don't watch Leno (I'm right there with you, by the way), has no bearing on anything. Don't be so myopic. And I mean absolutely no offense.

  11. I believe the Hardline boys were incorrect this afternoon when they said the largest TV viewing night was Thursday. The largest TV viewing night is Sunday.

  12. The Musers made it sound like it's a big deal to get on Letterman. I was on in '09 when I was up in NYC. Not bragging but basically you call them up and more than likely you'll get on. But...it is very cool to be in the Ed Sullivan Theater though. I was there when Jeff Goldlum was on. Now, that's a strange individual.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Leno isn't my cup of tea, either, but Letterman is unwatchable. Terrible interviewer. Not good at disguising his contempt for audience. Aging bits. After all these years, still ill at ease in front of people. And the most mirthless laugh in showbiz. He got a reputation for hipness awhile ago but it wore off around 1990.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And do I detect surprise that The Hardline guys are snobs? I love 'em to death, but yeah, they're snobs.

Yup, when I think of well-informed urban sophistication and cultural superiority, I think "North Texas sports/guy talk radio host."

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't watch any of the late night talk shows anymore, but when I did Letterman was my preference. A lot of what The Plainsman said is true about Dave, but I think he still has a lot of sympathetic fans who stick with him because they feel the Tonight Show gig should have been his.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thl are opinionated guys who are not pc in the least and are not afraid to state the obvious. Today they were simply saying they're baffled as to why leno's ratings are always as high as they are because they literally know no one who enjoys his bland, elderly catered humor. The comments about small town folk with little to no culture driving his ratings were absolutely right. Don't see what the big deal is.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Until the Tonight Show controversy with Conan, Leno was the Toyota Camry of talk show hosts. He offended the least amount of people, was easily the least eccentric and his jokes and show were reliably vanilla. Letterman stopped caring in the 90's and the show was buried alongside Calvert DeForest (may he rest in peace). Pimpbot 5000 will always hold a special place in my heart, and if you had the pleasure of seeing Jabba the Foxworthy live, you, well, um, I'm too choked up to talk anymore. Too bad those days are long gone.

  20. "The HL board op job is a springboard to get more daily on air time and being able to "participate" in the show?

Tell that to Expo and Psycho Dave."

...and Grubes. He was a drop artiste, but he extremely rarely participated outside of his trademark chuckle. (Which I'm pretty sure is how he wanted it anyway).

Jake's role as board-op was pretty unique, since he also has a hosting gig. I guess TC does too, but I don't expect Mino to have nearly the voice that Jake did. I'm guessing he'll speak when spoken to or otherwise keep his head down and play those drops.

    ReplyDelete
  21. By the way, I think Minnow will be a solid guy at the Ticket. He sounds like he's not 100% comfortable freely speaking yet on air, but I think over the course of the year he'll be much better and I could certainly see him as a fill-in guy down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was also kinda pissed at Corby Danny and Mike bagging on people that like Leno... Leno is like your dependable uncle the business guy. He does what he does to create a viewer ship that is very substantially larger than Letterman. I used to be a hardcore Letterman fan, and would record his show every night to watch the next day. Now, he's just phoning it in... And I can't forget when word broke about Letterman cheating on his wife, trolling for sex among staff women, etc. Not the Midwestern everyman that he started off as... These days, we record and watch Craig Ferguson. Consistently funny and edgy.

IMO you didn't offend anyone, it's more of a don't get caught up in ad hominem, flame wars thing. Calling others racists isn't a good way of doing business. At least not here at MTC. Cactus is correct. A lot of THL/Corby bashing goes on in these here comment sections. Some of it is well founded or at least cogently argued for, some not so much. It's one of the things I enjoy about MTC. Criticism is made by one and all, yet even most of the criticism is done because we're so passionate about The Ticket. Most who bemoan Corby being Corby or Mike's apparent laziness or Gordo's supposed pseudo intellectualness and bullying or on and on do it because they care so much. I know when I do it, it's out of wanting certain shows or hosts to perform the way they're capable of performing. The kind of performance that hooked me in and made a P1 in the first place. Sadly many of us discern a now long term change for the worse in some shows' and hosts' demeanors. We get upset about it and come here to vent. The main thing is that on the whole we vent respectfully and give reasons as to why we're venting. "You're wrong, I'm right; You're an x, y, or z" sort of exchange doesn't fly for long. Pman, eventually will clean house. If he didn't the blog would quickly lose its considerate and thoughtful commenters and devolve into some other sites that I won't mention. If, though, you'd rather not read or deal with criticism of The Ticket, I recommend Another P1 Wasteland. There you will find nothing but positivity. It's a decent blog and it's well written. Though there's very little meat to chew on.

Upshot is, welcome to MTC, enjoy the ride, and keep calm.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, thanks so much for the warm welcome and words of guidance, bbq. Very cool of you. Again, to all confessors, sorry if I responded in a callous, brash manner. Just couldn't believe what I was reading. Anywho, good vibes from here on out.

I thought I'd miss Jake on the thl more than the upside of him having a more hands on approach on bad, but that isn't the case thus far. Enjoyed having him more a part of the conversation this week. Someone said before that he is kind of the much younger brother on the thl, just happy to be hanging out. That's pretty spot in. I think we'll get the best of his abilities with the midday crew than with his we're all black friends drive time crew. Minos been solid so far with the drops as well. As much as Mike hates it, change can definitely be a good thing.

Delete my posts, fine, but when I'm called a racist (when I'm not) by someone who fails to understand what refutation by analogy is, I'm going to defend myself. Okay? Okay. I'm sick and tired of individuals making declarative and authoritative and 'psychic' (i.e., I know what's on your mind, in your heart, your intentions) statements without presenting a morsel of evidence. I'm sorry that the art of critical thinking and taking the time to actually read what's written and think about it before commenting is passe. That's not my fault. But again, I'm sure as hell not going sit back and let someone 'who doesn't mean to offend anyone' call me a racist--on account of his/her lack of understanding the obvious.

    Done.

  40. This name means nothing: You're a little out of your depth, here. These nice people are trying to push your car out of the mud and you're just spinning your tires. and all b/c of Jay Leno?

Jay Leno, the talk show host? This is like calling Dylan a sellout for the Super Bowl commercial. People have been making "Leno isn't hip" declarations, since forever.

I totally second Pman's comment that it would surprise me that anyone would be surprised by even a lil' HL snobbery.

Gosh, what else.... I support the SeaBass' entire catalogue; the dude is awesome.

I'm not affiliated with GIML, but I just think the guy is a comedic maestro, and he seemed to be almost universally revered by his co-workers, which should count for something. (Though I could easily be off base)

First impressions of Mino: he's impressing well on this confessor. Like Grubes, we both like space is sg, and I'm so happy it's back.

I gotta go shine up that tail, so I can attract a nice female and won't have to rely on this thing so much for human interaction.

  44. Re: Junior. Yes, he is divorced but is extremely private about it and his private life generally. I suspect someone on The Hardline is going to get a stern talking-to from The Joonze.

While we're on the subject, this site generally isn't interested in what Ticket guys do on their own time, so while I haven't generally taken down comments wondering if someone or other is married or divorced or a father or whatever, I discourage them and have removed a rumor or two over the years. If it's of public record, it may get some coverage here (Norm's nuptials, for example, or some online information I found on Mitchell Karasik), but in general I don't want this site going all TMZ on our heroes.

  46. To any GIML visitors...I owe an apology regarding my post in the last thread. Sometimes you get caught up in the moment and write things that later you regret...that was one of them, along with some on this post directed at the same GIML visitors over the years. It hopefully won't happen again because by me doing that isn't any better than the bickering I was addressing in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Affirmative. The Unticket seems to be down right now.

I think speculating on shows, the future of The Ticket, yada yada yada is fine. I think speculating on their personal lives is unfair to them and can if taken to extremes be dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wouldn't you know it. I was going to get caught up on the Ticketstock archives during the opening ceremonies tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Found it funny that when during their Leno finale talk that he said "yeah, he had to get a political jab in" and then poo pood it away. The jab was v. Obama. But when he played the jab at Bush, which followed the Obama joke, he thought that one was funny and made no similar comment. I guess it's only political and unnecessary when your side is taking the punch.

The Tardline: We try less and less with each passing show, and you keep coming back for more.

Me included, obviously. I had high hopes for Cowlishaw and Mosely. After a pretty nice start, the shine has definitely worn off. It's not that good. I have a feeling they thrive only during Cowboys season. So now I'm back to having The Tardline as my only choice of sport/guy talk. One day, maybe, surely, a show will come along that will put up a fight. Sure hope so.

As an aside..I am trying to remember the last time, if ever, a female has posted in here. There is another group not named GIML that I am a member of which had an issue today with a female severely lacking a clue. I hope if they do discover the hideout and/or are among the Anonymi that they try not to be a pain in the ass.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Junior is definitely divorced. The paperwork is out there. Let the man be.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Just curious to earlier P1's... was THL always elitist? It seems when they are separated they are way different people. Mike with Norm is actually tolerable. Corby with Bob or someone that puts him in his place is worth a listen. All three together (Mike, Corby, Danny), they come across as way different than when they are apart. Was it like this when Greggo was there? I caught THL at his final hours so I didn't know much about him. I was early on just about BAD radio, and later listened to THL. Now I still listen to THL but some days I just wish they did something different.

Reading some comments/hearing their thoughts about Leno is kind of funny. Three guys who seem to think life begins and ends in their small circles is laughable. Just listening to their station trips show how uncultured they can be. They should get out more, see the world, open their eyes to 5 feet outside the Dallas city limits.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think it is fair to say that Greggo could get up on his high horse with the best of them. Maybe somebody can finally get some use out of their Psych 101 class by explaining why Greggo was just a charming good ole boy and everyone else is an elitist.

I guess it's all in the delivery.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think the only elitist are Danny and Corby. Danny used to be referred to as the dark cloud and is very smart alec. Corby has gotten a lot of that from Danny over the years. In my opinion, they became more of the douche bag type since Danny came on more full time. Just my opinion though.

  74. I have a feeling that after KT's last stirring of the pot in these comboxes with his claim that the JVs were pissed over Ladies Be Trippin' (which hasn't aired in over a month, I believe), one of his bosses might've had a, ahem, heart to heart talk with him. He might post here anonymously, but something tells me he reads but no longer posts. Same goes with Seabass after his last set to with a couple of posters. Besides, at least where KT's concerned, after you've been gone for a while, you begin to no longer give a rip about what's going on back at the old place. This applies to anything in life. We've all been there before. Once the to do over Grubes' departure abated, he too began to comment here with less frequency. How long has it been since he last graced these com boxes? Been some time now. Heck, THL is on their 2nd post Grubes board-op. Time moves on, and so do people. Some more slowly than others. Even Greggo seems to have finally moved on. No more big "you haven't seen the last of me, etc." sort of Tweets. Nowadays it's more like "nobody cares what I have to say anymore, I had my time and it's over." Self pitying b.s. from a less than stable person? Maybe so, but there's also truth to it.

Speaking of GW. Someone said to the effect that why is it an elitist GW seems to get a pass when others don't. Good question. I think it's in the delivery, fair or not. Plus I don't think GW was so much an elitist as he was hypocrite. For that he's been raked over coals, over and again.

I'm not sure why it's a good or a bad thing if females read/participate in the MTC world. Then again, I don't know why someone's sexuality defines them or has anything to do with playing a sport. Either that stuff doesn't matter because we live in a meritocracy (society wise), or it does and differences in genitalia and attraction somehow dictate how good a ball player or commenter you are. The latter makes no sense to me. Why privilege or think "neat-o/hurrah" of anyone because of sexuality or gender? Sound comment, wonderful. Don't care who you are. Great player, wonderful. Don't care who you are.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @pops and buzzers

Might be right about KT, but who knows. Grubes is still a fan. He was on earlier on that other site.

The problem with one particular female on that same location was not her sports talk, it started with politics. I can attest to the hard feelings politics can stir up around a forum, this one included. She didn't take kindly to being called out, felt bullied and it was a blocking fiesta after that. Today in the aftermath of the Sam declaration there was another round of angst and discussion. Had a member drop out because of it. Late this evening Grubes stepped in and said a few things. The vast majority of it was to encourage us to get along and don't eff it up. It's no secret there are Ticket oriented places that have gone away because we couldn't get along on the playground. I broke my personal moratorium on political talk here and it was not a happy fun time. T4 had to talk me down a bit. SeaBass might have relegated himself to lurker status, but I bet he drifts by still.
Again, my comment about female posters was borne of frustration with a drama queen who did not like being called out. I sincerely hope they feel welcome here as much as any other poster. Pman runs a nice place and I don't want to be a party to ruining it.

The people that want to just talk in drops, discuss the funny segment that just happened, etc. slowly get eroded by the people that want to go beyond "mere Ticket talk."

The latter is definitely not a bad thing...BUT it does make it tougher for the people that just want to talk Ticket, especially because some of the non-Ticket stuff (politics, religion, etc.) can be very divisive and result in personal attacks.

This forum isn't there yet, but hopefully these little fires can be doused now before it's too late. Sorry if these comments are unwelcome. I just have really high hopes that this could be the one place where P1's can "gather 'round gather 'round!" and play nicely.

  79. I tried to find the Sideshow Bob FB page but couldn't. Anyone have a URL?

  80. see if this link will get you there. Bob took it secret a while back to keep our comments off our feed.

If that doesn't work email me. cactusflinthead@gmail and I can send you an invite.

  81. Wow, this place is getting as busy as GIML these days. Okay, not even close, but it's still surprising to go away for a couple days and come back and see 81 comments. I'm still not sure that's a good thing. I like the new voices, but it's getting harder to keep up with everything.

  82. Actually, this place does have more traffic than GIML these days.

  84. galgal: Welcome, and sounds like you need to get back with that ex. We've recently had speculation on how many distaff readers we have, so it was good to hear from you.

I try to enforce some minimum degree of niceness, but I try to show some flexibility so that strong feelings, properly expressed, get felt and expressed. I'm tougher than I used to be on deleting posts with nasty personal remarks, name-calling, and that sort of thing.

So I hope you will enjoy it and participate in the commentary.

By the way, you are now a Confessor.
