A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."
Wish I could've made it out last night, Pman. How did it go?
Also digging the comment moderation thing. I know it's a burden on you and that it also kills the immediacy of a convo, but at least until the dingle lings shove off, I guess it's necessary.
I'm reminded of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which mentions that "Belgium" is the most offensive word in the galaxy and that it's used as an expletive everywhere except on Earth.
I hope somebody turned up over at the Barleyhouse.
Has Drydock been mentioned yet? I like the line-up so far. I know Rhads irritates some folks, but I like him. Newberry and @peet2 are pretty good. I'd kinda like Joe to let the game come to him more, but it's only a couple of weeks of this sort of thing. It has convinced me of just how SPORTS Newberry can be. The Kick Around is a good too. I was ambivalent about the WC before it actually started. Now I will keep watching even after our exit.
I'm glad a lot of these dry dock guys find success in Team America going 1-2-1 in the World Cup, and maybe some of the commenters here do as well. But good Lord, does the radio commentary suck or what??? 1% game analysis, player performance, etc., and 99% "Why is it not more popular in America and will the 1-2-1 record be the flash point to U.S. Sports Fan Mainstreamism?"
I decided to clean up my bookmarks on my browser and went ahead and deleted "A P1 Wasteland" which hasn't been updated since 4/24/14.
Also deleted "Luke Warm Sports Opinions" which hasn't been updated since 5/31/14. The only Ticket-related bookmark left is the Reddit thread.
I know it must be hard coming up with new content so my hat is off to you Plainsman with keeping this site up-to-date and interesting. Wish I could have made it to The Barley House but had other obligations.
Blergoyen, I believe you're the only one interested in hearing soccer x's and o's being discussed on the ticket. The guys openly admit they know very little about the sport.
Peter Welpton is a welcome addition to the KTCK roster. I am neither a soccer nor a racing fan, but I occasionally listen to Race Week and might listen to a weekly soccer show if this Welpton guy was involved. He's got something.
I really dig Welpton, and I'm not a soccer guy. I am starting to tire of the "why isn't soccer bigger" narrative that gets regurgitated over and over. Just like basketball didn't take on like wildfire internationally for the longest time, soccer will build up and there will be a following. Count me in as being more interested in this than hockey; it's starting to creep up on baseball for me and I'm going to give the EPL a try and adopt a team. I would actually like to hear more x's and o's as I wasn't acclimated with these teams and the strategy each team used. It seemed like our guys couldn't pass or string together long possessions against anyone we played. Scoring opportunities seemed to come in a burst. In any case, I'm enjoying soccer land mine.
On Norm filling in for the Musers, Norm has grown on me over the past few years and I enjoy his commentary, so much so that I get annoyed when I hear Sirois coming through 50% of the time. This is probably just a product of Norm having to carry a 4 hour show instead of the normal 2 hours, but I've punched out consistently all week and got into Mike and Mike more. Anyone else?
I have been a Norm supporter for going on 25 years. I still think he has something...chose to listen to him during the early years of the Ticket, as well. He isn't for everyone, though, so I acknowledge there will be those who chime in with the other side.
Totally on board with Peter and Newbes. I too wish they'd go onto xs and os. In fact I wish they would have a soccer 101 show.
One negative.
Attention Catman of the Americas: PLEASE PUT A MUZZLE ON JOE LETCHE. HE TAKES EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO JUMP ON THE MIC AND STAY THERE. HE SOUNDS LIKE ANDY PANDY AND IS IN GENERAL ANNOYING. IT IS NOT THE JOE LETCHE SHOW FEATURING JOE LETCHE. NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR THAT SHOW. AND AS I TYPE THIS JOE HAS POPPED ON THRICE.
While I respect and appreciate Norm, I just can't listen to him anymore. I was thankful Dooce was with him thru Wed but he doesn't have much chemistry with Norm and sort of played down to his counterpart a bit, nowhere near the energy he normally brings with one of The Musers.
• I found Norm equally boring as the Snoozers - I mean Musers. The Musers have lost their momentum and drive to entertain.
• Mike Sirois is one of the best things currently going at The Ticket. He is funny, inventive and knows exactly how to nudge Norm to get the most from him
• I would love a weekly soccer show with Welpton and whoever (Davy comes to mind, because he is somewhat knowledgeable and can bring some entertainment factor to the show).
• Time to move on to "Why Isn't Soccer Bigger" and just appreciate the fact it's here, it's worldwide and it's going to stick around. Plenty to talk about. As a relative novice, I would welcome some strategy and tactics talk.
I am a life-long soccer fan, but I also understand why they don't talk about it much outside of the World Cup. Grew up with the Dallas Sidekicks, which makes me a fan of Norm as well.
Thinking about a soccer show, I am not sure if it could be sustainable year round. But maybe Welpton or one of the others do a weekly segment, a la Ranch Report on the different shows?
Fill us in on Rhyner as I hardly listened today, or this week for that matter.
On the topic of Mike Sirois. ..I've said before that I would be a P1 of any show he hosts. He doesn't get that freedom with Norm. Pair him up with anyone near his character type and they would be great.
It is enjoyable to hear them talk soccer, but not all too worried it will fade away. Big EPL P1, and I feel comfortable that soccer is one of the biggest games in the world. Soccer, Rugby, Cycling make me like Jr miller as more a fringe sports guy. Either way, glad they got some people that know what they are talking about. In a week it will go back to should the cowboys have signed a 4th string tackle or Romo stop golfing?
I forgot who said it but they likened the WC to Olypmics. People don't watch swimming, gymnastics, curling etc outside of the Olympic games. Yet people latch on and cheer for USA! Soccer for some reason people go out of their way to bash the sport.
Mike R has been elected to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, along with several handsful of others. He will join Norm Hitzges and the others the impression of whose tonsils will be recorded in plaster of Paris and displayed in a small abandoned storefront behind Luby's.
"It is enjoyable to hear them talk soccer, but not all too worried it will fade away."
Soccer will never fade away. A hypothetical Ticket Soccer show (along the lines of Raceweek) would need to address local goings-on, MLS, and cover the big-boys in the EPL, Bundesleague (sp), and La Liga. It just makes sense and keeps everyone engaged.
Fact is, EPL will continue to be the main league hearer in the USA for some time. MLS may get there someday, but not in our lifetime.
I think this theoretical show would be successful (once a week).
Wish I could've made it out last night, Pman. How did it go?

I don't know how I will get through the next week without Corby to explain soccer to me.
