Out driving around today. Hit The Ticket,
expecting to hear SMU football with great play-by-play by Rich Phillips.
Nope, must have been halftime.
Wandered the dial and stumbled on a show on KESN (ESPN) that kept me tuned in for the next hour or so.
Not just "a show"; they call it "The Show." Pretty aggressive (and unimaginative) title, but it was good, kept me listening with approximate Ticket-attentiveness.
It featured Matt McClearin (formerly paired with Scot Harrison Sundays on the The Ticket (MaSS) before the two of them decamped to Birmingham for 3.5 years (WJOX)) and DJ Ringgenberg. They talked college football and Cowboys.
Matt the good cop, DJ the bad cop. In a show where McClearin is the mature older presence, you know you're going to hear some snottiness, but I liked it for all that. Ringgenberg's contempt for the Nebraska Cornhuskers was amusing after their shellacking by Iowa yesterday. (Ringgenberg's an Iowa grad.)

I see on Ringgenberg's LinkedIn page that he also interned for Norm from June
through August 2012. After describing his duties, he notes: "I
also prepared excellent coffee to the exact specifications of Mr. Hitzges on a
daily basis.”
A highlight of the show was an interview with Charean
Williams. She was excellent, damned hard-core sportsy talk and no
cutesy. The Ticket could use a sports-media call-in expert like that;
heck, could use a host like that. Would love to hear her on with the
'Line. She was with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram since 1999, laid off
last May. Cat should give her a call, she sounds like she'd be
worth shuffling for. Jeez, he's Ops Director for the station, he may have
programmed her. Move her on over, Jeff.
You guys may already know about The Show and Ringgenberg and Williams, but they were new to me, probably because I'm mostly Ticket-centric. Anyway, a meaty listen and thought I'd pass it along.
Did get to hear Rich Phillips's thrilling call of the final play of the SMU-Tulane game. Of course, most of Rich's calls are thrilling.

ReplyDeleteDJ is a good dude!
ReplyDeleteSounds like the Monte-Mino "Work in Progress" is a thing. Monte just made a remark about "three shows in," so maybe Cat's settled on this team for our Sunday show.
ReplyDeleteFine with me. David has settled in more comfortably with each show.
CrayTrey1310: He sounded like a good dude. Definitely with a healthy dose of Dylan the Argumentative Teen about him, but he also seemed to have pretty solid sports knowledge to back it up. So yeah, I liked the listen.
ReplyDeleteWhile we're on that subject, I wonder if Cat uses his operations/programming authority over ESPN to audition talent for The Ticket, for those once-every-two-decades times when he needs to make some programming decisions for the latter.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder if there is some part of the deal between Cumulus and ESPN that prevents The Ticket from poaching. Given the natural fluidity of talent in the radio world, I would think that would be unusual. But possible.
Mino*s voice sounds a lot like Gen X Davey Lane's.
ReplyDeleteI always thought Matt McClearin was top notch, weird and sportsy which fit perfectly in with the Ticket Culture. It's good to see he has a spot in the DFW radio landscape.
ReplyDeleteSide note, what is the purpose of 103.3? I never listen because I don't reside in the area but is it super sportsy and newsy? Like if the ticket is 50/50 sports and fun is 103.3 80/20 sports and fun?
I think the whole thing is an interesting arrangement.
For the record, Junior went to Fister about 5:50 this morning.
ReplyDeleteThe moment I heard the Rangers got to Fister first I couldn't help but think of Junior and have a nice private chuckle. He let us wait 15 minutes from the start of the show until he got to Fister.
ReplyDeleteApparently there's an inside joke with Miller and Fister that I'm not aware of. Anyone wanna elaborate?
ReplyDeleteJames, just keep repeating the phrase "get to Fister." It's Junior's go-to gag anytime his name is mentioned.
ReplyDeleteNobody beats the Joonz. Nobody.
ReplyDelete11:42: Thanks. When I first read the comments, I hadn't thought about adopting the mindset of a Junior High boy. That was keeping me from figuring it out. I'll know better next time.
ReplyDeleteJames, c'mon, it is The Ticket we're talking about, no?
ReplyDeleteI've been listening to Matt on a semi regular basis since his return to Dallas. Be it maturing, learning from his time in Alabama, or the atmosphere of 103.3, or a combo of sorts, he's definitely gotten better. Better at not revealing TMI about his personal life and history. Better at emitting a sense of sports authority. And, mostly, a better all around on air talent. Gone is the at times creepy, nervous energy and claims of being freaky, a weirdo. So too are the uncomfortable takes if driving cross country to hook up with a chick just met online and the likes. No. So far, so good. And good for him. Matt has good pipes, can be engaging, and has sport's chops. Well worth the listen and your time.
ReplyDeleteI guess I don't get the Rick Steves bit. But if the alternative is Sports Panites I'll take it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 8:50. I also think Matt has an intangible tie to Jake. Maybe it's the voice? Since Matt is more palatable than Jake (or maybe the other way around - Jake is more sandpaper) it makes Matt appear in comparison better than what he was. Nevertheless, I'll never forget his alien story.
ReplyDeleteIs McClearin a flat earth guy?
ReplyDeleteWhat sort of question is that, Shaggy?
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw that question from the Shagmeister, I thought -- yeah, I seem to remember something about McClearin maybe being a flat-earther. He's an alien guy, we know that. Might just be the power of suggestion, but Shaggy may have had a perfectly good reason for that question.
ReplyDeleteWow: 7:26 PM Wednesday, David Moore on "Intentional Grounding" gave the best explanation of Jason Garrett's behavior on record to date. I gotta run, don't like to leave everyone dangling, but wish they could run stuff like that on the Top Ten. Deserves to be heard again.
ReplyDeleteDude! You can't make that statement a d not give a recap! Not cool.
ReplyDeleteRose.... Lauer....
ReplyDeleteWho at the ticket is "wearing a diaper" like Danny suggested on the show yesterday about men in power that have done inappropriate things at work to woman ?
Will it be an on-air person or someone behind the curtain that a story from a ticket chick or traffic chick come out about ?
Check out what's the top story on the Ticket subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/theticket/comments/7gnmg7/breaking_news_jake_kemp_leaving_the_ticket_for/
ReplyDeleteLooks like #fakenews
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/NotJackKemp/status/936279863505379330
Jake has already denied this, his tweet calling the source "a long-time troll, with a history of trying to F with me."
ReplyDeleteMore fake news.
Wow sounds like a great generic sport talk show I'm glad I missed. Plainsman must be trying to make new sport media friends.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed the Jack Kemp rumors are true and that he's taking TC with him. BaD Radio would be so much better with both of them gone.
More Fake Rick Steves
Psnoot, you owe us a summary on D Moore's HSO.
ReplyDeleteI'm not P-Man but I recorded I.G. and just listened to it.
ReplyDeleteIf I may . . . Garrett is too analytical and trusts his preparation based on his analysis. He's reluctant to make in-game changes because he's so sure of his game prep, particularly early on. He's too stubborn.
Or some such.
Thanks, 544. Good on ya, pal. So, eh. Pman...next time you ask for details, context, etc., from a Confessor....don't
ReplyDelete@544 That sounds robotic even. Stuck on a program and will not venture forth from it.
ReplyDeleteThere can be only Alpha Male at the Ranch and it ain't JG
thankfully Cowboys Friday will be after a win and therefore less engaging
nevertheless Norm will find five things that NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT
drivetime pregame was pretty cool actually
Cumulus debt restructured? So no sales of stations just yet?
SAD. Well, we shall see if they can pay the bills next quarter I suppose
This morning, I was listening to Scattershooting, while going through the drive-through for some unhealthy fast-food breakfast. Long story short: I hear all of Junior's closing joke about the 2 medical students and the man who walked awkwardly, but didn't hear the punch line. Someone want to share it here?
ReplyDeleteTwo medical students were walking along the street when they saw an old man walking with his legs spread apart. One of the students said to his friend "I'm sure he has Petry Syndrome. Those people walk just like that."
ReplyDeleteThe other student says "No, I don't think so. The old man surely has Zovitzki Syndrome. He walks just as we learned in class."
Since they couldn't agree they decided to ask the old man. They approached him and one of the students said to him "We're medical students and couldn't help but notice the way you walk, but we couldn't agree on the syndrome you might have. Could you tell us what it is?"
The old man said "I'll tell you, but first you must tell me what you think." One of the students said "I think its Petry Syndrome." The old man said "You thought.... but you are wrong." Then the other student said "I think you have Zovitzki Syndrome." The old man said "You thought... but you are wrong." So they asked him "Well, what do you have?" The old man said "I thought it was a FART... but I was WRONG."
excellent. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRhyner posted this. You have to subscribe to read it.

Is it worth the $4.00 to read? Meaning, does it give any new and inside information that hasn't been around, written about or discussed previously. I have the ticket book (somewhere, think it is titled Full Disclosure) so anything not in here?
ReplyDeleteI know Plainsman does not want us to get into personal stuff (please delete if you feel necessary P-man) but I have always wondered if/how getting the station up affected Mike's marriage. It must have been an amiable break-up as she attended his Texas HOF induction and he included her in his remarks.
Not that I care about $4 really but to sign up, get e-mail spam from the site, have to cancel and make sure it is really cancelled is more of a pain in the ass than $4 unless this article has some really good insight. Which, because Rhyner locked it behind a pay wall, maybe it does have good insight.
@easttexasP1,
ReplyDeleteIt appears that The Upset is just attempting to be a digital sportswriting knockoff of The Athletic, before The Athletic, which began in January '16, possibly expands to D/FW. The Athletic is already 15 US/Canadian cities ncluding SF, Chicago, Toronto, Vancouver, Detroit, Montreal and Cleveland and prides itself on just writing/reporting. No video and no advertising.
