Please, Robert

I really like Robert Wilonsky.  Not everyone on this site does; some think he fudges some accounts of his past.  I have no way of knowing and it doesn't make a lot of difference to my enjoyment of his broadcasting and his journalism.   I really like David Moore, too, and that means I doubly like Intentional Grounding.

I wish were on for two hours every Wednesday.

I wish it were on every week throughout the year.

But I heard something near the close of the show tonight that made me a little sad.

Robert was interrogating David Moore on the Alex Smith-from-KC-to-Washington deal.

In the course of doing so, he was deliberately avoiding using the phrase "Washington Redskins," calling it either the "Washington Football Club," or the "Washington Football Team," maybe both, I forget which.  (I don't believe David ever found reason to use the team name but I may have missed it.)

And he kind of paused before he said it each time.  Thinking about it.  Not sure.  Not signalling, just not sure.

I was disappointed in that locutional strategy.  I don't like to think of my favorites giving in to political correctness.  Snyder isn't going to change the name.  Goodell isn't going to make him do it.  Native Americans are not clamoring for it.   (Differing, in this important respect, from other names for other ethnic groups, which names are widely reviled.  Washington Post poll from mid-2016 reports 9 of 10 Indians not offended by the name.)  No one is going to think Robert is a racist if he calls them the Washington Redskins, yet he felt he just couldn't bring himself to say it, and it was obvious that it was not an inadvertent word choice.

Ah well, we live in different times now.  Crappier times, but different.

Wahoo, Big Bob.

  1. Big Bob Wilonsky is indeed an easy and enjoyable listen. But anyone who follows him on social media or reads his work in the fishwrap is well aware of his political tendencies. Just another attempt to virtue-signal I suppose

  2. Brad Sham does not call them the Redskins either.

  3. I wonder if any of that is mandated by the stations/newspaper.

  4. Hey, Confessors: There was a question at the end of the last thread as to how a person leaving a comment could delete that comment. I don't have that issue -- can one of you tell us how that works? I could pose as an Anonymous guy and just figure it out, but that would be too much work.

  5. I deleted my comment on the last thread because I was in my work Google account and didn't want to resign in and deal with all that mess. There is an option on the screen to trash it. My comment BTW was that according to the first segment on N & D on Monday was that Mary was still very ill with the flu and Norm did not feel like he could leave her alone for the week.

  6. Bob just posted on Twitter where he's going to be blogging the 'Boys, he's going to a new startup called 'The Athletic DFW'

    https://twitter.com/SportsSturm/status/959094330823790592

And then right after local MTC commenter KT said something cryptic as well, "This is a thing that’s happening, and a thing that I am now a small part of. Hold on to your butts!"

Nice "Hold on to your butts!" reference there KT! :)

  7. Just read the latest Newberg Report email. He's going paywall at The Athletic, too. Kind of disappointing, TBH. Here's the web version of his last email: http://www.newbergreport.com/article.asp?articleid=4519

I also see that TheUpset.com in it's entirety, is going to The Athletic.

  8. I told you all on January 13.

The Athletic is click bait free and the $4/month allows you access to every city and topic. It's a really good deal if you read 3+ articles per day, but I'm not sure how long they'll survive as their staff is really big and they haven't had a positive month in revenue yet.

  9. Is The Athletic going to edit Sturm better than the DMN? I'm a fan of radio Bob but most of his writing rambles as much as his 90 second interview "questions".

Newberg can type like he's getting paid per word too. I don't want USA Today-esque barebones stories but both could use a stern editor.

  10. I won't say "Redskins" when talking football to my kids, either. I guess that makes me some kind of virtue-signaling, left-wing, dirty Dem socialist. Or maybe I don't want to use a derogatory term around my kids. How dare I have this opinion.

  11. What percent of “Indians” would need to be offended before you would be convinced not to use the term, Plainsman?

  12. Based on our president's example being non-politically correct is not necessarily the panacea everyone makes it out to be unless you enjoy being offensive (calling senator Warren a derogatory term for native American) and calling for political opposition to be locked up in prison. I will take the discourse seen between Tip O'Neil and Ronald Reagan instead of this nut any day. But at the end of the day, the people and Russian bots have spoken. The Donald is our president. Stand up and salute..

  13. Unfortunately work got in the way of listening today so I am inquiring from the masses - Did Bob and Dan track down Marissa from Palm Beach Tan? And if so how did it go?

  14. They tried, but it turned out that she does not work there anymore. She got a better job.

  16. Big Bob is a self aggrandizing pompous ass, if he could get out of his own way he has some good info to give out. But he is hard to stay with long enough to get there.

I would say that I would put him in Dan's "will be caught with steroids at some time" category. Not sure if it would be with a woman, info or plagiarism.

  19. Tom vs. Time Documentary online paints quite a contrast between Tom Brady's work ethic and drive vs. our beloved and departed Tony Romo. By all accounts Brady puts more offseason time into training in one year than Tony did his whole career of offseason intensive golf sessions.

  20. Rhinosaur...... There is no "hope that he goes down".

I was just following up on Dan's bit, it is just who you don't think it would surprise you if it happened.

That is all I was saying.

  21. "Russian bots." LMAO.

Congrats Pman - now we know you are being monitored by share blue, share pink or some other david brock propaganda machine.

Between the alinskyites and complaints about QBs that haven't played in 2 years, are there any decent commenters left?

  22. How about that Super Bowl game. Agree with the Musers that the Eagles win makes Jerry and Jason look even more inept as Jason works now on his 8 year long process with 1 playoff victory to show for it meanwhile Pedersen wins a ring in his 2nd season.

  23. Hardline mentioned today that they are permanently moving e-news to 4:50, better known to us as 5:00. Mike made two remarks that may or may not have been intended to be taken seriously.

They wouldn't be as pressed for time (isn't that one of their short segments?)

They need a ratings boost as 5:00. (I immediately thought of the all hands meeting a couple of weeks ago)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Do people gauge their Hardline listening to catch (or avoid) certain segments? If so, would E-News be considered a tune-in event?

I think Mike may have been having us on. Doing it a half-hour later gives Corby more time to browse TMZ, Rolling Stone, Buzzfeed sites. More opportunity for in-show prep. Maybe they'll give Danny a segment so Corby can get ready.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes. The only Hardline segments I care to listen to are ENews and CQH

  26. 4 more days until we never have to hear this Ticketstock song again.

  27. EN and QCH are the worst seggies on the station. Runner up is The Birdhouse.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I wish THL would Tweet their run sheet prior to each shiw, like BaD does. That way I know approximately when to tune in, if even whether to tune in. Honestly, unless Mike's talking Rangers, I don't have much use for the show.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I keep trying to go back to the Hardline but I get about 5 minutes in an I have to jump to another station. Maybe it is because I am a P1 the rest of the day and they don't have a fresh take on the stories of the day/week. 103.3 has a different take on the stories.

I just find Corby and Danny very hard to listen to and they are so much of the show the last several years. They are either unprepared, condescending or just borring. Whatever it is I don't stay around long.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Corby is Kris Kris and Danny is Guy Sports. Most of the time Mike is just taking a paycheck and would not know what to do with himself with all the free time if he was not at the ticket.

  31. Anybody get this in their email late last night?

    Dear ,

As one of our listeners, you're probably aware that we've been working hard for the past several years to stay ahead of rapid changes in the radio and technology landscape.

We're contacting you now to learn more about your media habits and your opinions about the media you use. Our goal is to continue to provide great content on the platforms and devices you use most often, so we're inviting you to share your opinions about technology in our annual survey.

You are among a select group of listeners invited to participate and tell us how you use the radio, along with social media, smartphones, tablets, streaming and the web to stay connected to entertainment, news, and updates from us and other sources. Whether you use all these things or not, we really need your opinion.

Your responses will be kept completely confidential, and we will never share your personal information with anyone. We'll only use the information you provide to enhance our service.

I do have to let you know that this survey may take you as long as 15-20 minutes to complete, but you can stop, save your work, and resume at any time. Because of the many changes in technology, it covers a lot of ground. We hope you have the time to help us out and let us know your opinions.

  33. I can’t listen to Steve Dennis. Can’t put my finger on it, but something about his voice or delivery just drives me nuts. It may be his sense of humor or the way he frames an argument, which reminds me of Galloway’s, and is the kind of thing is an automatic punch out for me.

  34. I think that it is kind of funny the way the shows are set up on both 1310 and 105.3.

The Musers rule the sports radio market but the next best shows are Bad Radio and then GBag Nation yet the program directors keep them in poor spots in their lineups. I think that it is like having one of your best hitters in the 7 or 8 spot in the line up.

If baseball's "WAR" was used then both Bad Radio and GBag Nation as in the wrong spot in their line up.

One day I will put together my "WAR" rankings for the talk show hosts.......

  35. Did anyone else hear the Hardline's segment yesterday about the HoF class? The part that really irked me was Mike saying not only did TO not deserve to get in but that Ray Lewis and even Randy Moss wouldn't have been in if it were up to him. They all had too many off the field issues for him. I don't think I've ever felt like he was such an "out dated old white man" than when listening to that segment. Coming back from break Corby asked if Michael Irvin would get into his HoF and he stuttered and stammered around and finally just said "yea I could really talk myself into a corner with that one."

  36. I very rarely listen live during the day because for whatever reason the wifi isn't strong enough in my building to stream. So I end up downloading the podcasts from the previous day. I'll download just about everything avaliable from BaD and most of the stuff from the Hardline. Very rarely do I download anything from NaD and I'd probably guess something about 50% of the Musers stuff. For them I'm not really concerned with their "sportsy" segments, just the bits.

On the commute, I'm pretty even 50/50 between the little Ticket and 105.3. I'll pick whichever segment sounds more interesting and listen until the next commercial break.
