Fred Garvin Runs 'Em Down -- Who's The Ticket MVP?

Confessor Fred Garvin sent me an essay on his view of the Most Valuable Player on The Ticket, MVP as being defined -- reasonably, I think -- by him.  The views Fred expresses are not necessarily those of Your Plainsman or this site.

I picked the redheads.

As always, comments are welcome.  However, please refrain from ad hominem attacks on Fred or his analysis.  If you disagree, give us your reasons and, if you'd like, an alternative candidate.

I thank Fred for his contribution.  Please send your own proposed post to ThePlainsman1310@gmail.com.  I'll let you know if I think it's suitable or if I would like changes.  You might wish to drop me a proposal for an article first,as Fred did in this case.

Many thanks.

It’s time for a classic barroom debate: Who’s the MVP of The Ticket?

By “MVP,” I mean the regular host—not substitute host, not weekend host, not Jake, not Danny—who brings the most radio goodness to the table. I’m talking about the person who, if they were to depart The Ticket tomorrow, would create the biggest void, not just for their own show, but for the station as a whole.

In my view, there are only three contenders: George Dunham, Bob Sturm, and Gordon Keith.

One of these we can dismiss fairly quickly: Gordon.

Gordon is loaded with talent. Humorist, writer, musician, impressionist (his Trump is the best in the country), cultural commentator. He’s so talented, in fact, that I was mildly relieved when I heard him sound a little pitchy at Summer Bash. Because really, to be as good as he is at everything else, and to be a handsome son-of-a-*****, AND to be able to sing—well, that would just be cruel to those of us who struggle to do any one thing with distinction.

The only flaw in Gordon’s game is that he doesn’t know sports. And that’s a big deal when you’re on a sports talk radio station. It means that Gordon is largely MIA for important sports conversations. What’s more, in the eight years I’ve been listening to The Ticket, he doesn’t appear to have done anything to address this weakness. So, as great as the Great Gordo is, he’s only going to take home the bronze.

Dunham and Sturm, on the other hand, are the most well-rounded Ticket hosts. They’re five-tool players. To paraphrase a line from a Ticket promo, they can do everything the other hosts do, but the other hosts—talented though they may be—can’t do everything Jub and Sports Sturm can do.

Ginger time out:

There can be only one MVP, however. So, who’s it going to be? Here’s your point-by-point comparison:

Interviewing: Bob asks the most meandering, self-referential, commentary-laden questions in the business. Good, interesting questions, mind you, but questions that challenge you not to lose the thread. George, on the other hand, keeps things simple. His questions are less thought-provoking than Bob’s, but they cover the essential ground clearly and quickly.

Advantage: This is a tough one, but I’m going to give it to Bob. His interviews, though sometimes awkward, tend to explore unfamiliar terrain, and elicit fresh responses.

Humor: Because he’s partners with Dan, Bob’s humor is underrated. He has a surprisingly quick wit, though, and a fine sense of when to work a joke and when to move on. But George has another gear…impressions, polished comedy bits, and the ability to serve as an effective straight man to Gordon, who needs good set-ups, appropriate reactions, and just the right amount of leash. George delivers all of that.

Advantage: George. Bob may be naturally funnier, but George has arrows in his quiver that Bob does not.

Sports knowledge: Mike knows baseball, Corby knows college football, Jake knows the NBA…but George and Bob know everything. They can talk the Big Four with ease. Bob, though, knows soccer too. Plus, when it comes to NFL and the Cowboys, Bob brings information and analysis to the table that you’re not going to hear elsewhere (including from George).

Advantage: Bob. In terms of sports knowledge, he and George are head and shoulders above most Ticket hosts, but Bob brings more depth and breadth to the conversation than George does.

Music: Music is a big part of Ticket culture—making music, and talking about others who make it. This is obviously a passion for George, but barely a passing interest for Bob.

Advantage: George. His knowledge of music is far superior to Bob’s. Plus, though he’s modest about his musical abilities, I’ve seen George blow the doors off the joint more than once. Bob, on the other hand, is the guy in the audience with you and me, saying “Wow…”

Pop culture: Television, movies, teacher-student sex, politics, Internet memes, weird-but-true news stories…all of this is fodder and fair game for Ticket hosts. Both Bob and George have a fairly chaste sensibility, and tend to shy away from sex-related stories. (This can be difficult, as they are paired with co-hosts—Dan and Gordon, respectively—who often fixate on things carnal.) Beyond that realm, though, Bob seems more attuned to what’s going on in movies and television, and willing to wade into most conversations initiated by Dan or Jake, regardless of topic. George, on the other hand, sometimes hangs out on the periphery of these discussions, letting Gordon and Craig drive the segment.

Advantage: Bob. He’s more comfortable with non-sports talk than George, and more eager to engage in it.

On-air chemistry: I like Dan. A lot. But he isn’t a particularly generous co-host. Bob, though, works hard to generate actual conversations with Dan, and to participate fully in Dan’s bits. This works so well, I find myself wondering if they’re friends outside of work. George and Craig, on the other hand—though friends of long-standing—don’t have the same easy connection. Often, they sound like they’re talking past each other, rather then having an authentic conversation. And George’s impatience with Gordon’s sometimes juvenile approach is obvious.
Advantage: Bob. His rapport with Dan seems natural and fun, which is a considerable achievement, considering Dan’s style. George isn’t on that same level with Craig…and certainly not with Gordon.

X-factor: Both Bob and George seem like exceedingly kind, thoughtful, generous, humble, good men. George does a lot of charity work, and to hear him get choked up when talking about senior citizens has, more than once, brought a tear to my eye. (He’s not given to cheap emotion, so you know his compassion is genuine.) He’s also quick to defend others against Gordon’s sharper barbs.

Bob knows he won life’s lottery—great job, great wife, great kids, great pipes—and like George, seeks to share his blessings: by adopting a child from Honduras, by quarterbacking the “Drop Your Pants” event, and by lifting up his coworkers. (He invites input from Jake and TC, knowing that he’s already made it, but that they need reps if they’re ever going to achieve what he has.)

Advantage: Neither. Both seem like guys you’d be proud to number among your friends.

Y-factor: George is on the air for 4.5 hours per day. Bob is on for 3.0 hours. Both are impressive (can you imagine filling even one hour every day, day after day, for years on end, without taking calls?). But mathematically speaking, one is more impressive than the other…doubly so, when you consider the time of day we’re talking about.

Advantage: George.

***

Based on the foregoing analysis, the application of a proprietary algorithm, and the sprinkling of a little magic dust, your 2018 Ticket MVP Award goes to:

Bob Sturm!

Congratulations, Bob. (And George, against this level of competition, there’s no shame in taking the silver.)

We had a request not long ago for Maureen O'Hara.
Someone home behind those green peepers.  And
she could act.

  1. Great perspective. I personally believe Craig is the MVP, but I also agree with many of the points here. The thing is, I think if either Muser left, the other would follow suit. That would leave a huge void. I could see Bob going and Jake moving into that slot with Dan.

Thanks PM for the Maureen O'Hara photo, you found one I had not seen.

  2. I think I would have landed on Bob as well, but for very different reasons. A big part of it though is that BaD radio is by far my favorite show. Bob and Dan are polar opposites but still manage to have a great show. It also helps that they aren't huge into music like the Musers or Hardline since that's really not my thing. To each his own though.

@Scott - I agree that I think BaD could split up and be just fine. I think Bob and Donny would make a great pair and Dan and Jake could do the same. You could throw a 3rd guy like TC or Monty in either of those pairings and I think you'd have a really solid show.

  3. Loving Engaged Mike. The difference in his demeanor and volume of contribution when Corby is out is night and fucking day.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Where is Corby today (Monday), by the way? Did they say?

    ReplyDelete
  5. He tweeted a picture from inside an almost empty airplane on Saturday, so I expected he wouldn't be there for a few days if not the whole week. Didn't say where he was going, though.

On a not related at all note, did anyone else notice a lot fewer superlatives uttered on the Hardline today?

  6. I'm a huge Jake P1. Daresay I might even honorable mention him in the Plainsman's above premise a couple years down the road. Which is why I was a little letdown by his THL cameo today. Not sure whether it was a cautiousness for stepping on toes, a bit of a paralyzing reverence for THL players, or just a non-percolating chemistry today, but the show never really took off the way I thought it might. Jake seemed to be playing it way safe, and his usually on-point participation felt a little stilted and noobish at times. Am I wrong guys? I will say, E-news had a little bit of that ticket ferrett 1:30 news flavor. Liked it. And liked the fresh air on THL in general. But also have a little more respect for Rhynes-Danny-Corby-chemistry being an actual legit thing.

  7. And at the chance of all of that sounding harsh, let me double down on Jake's skills. The guy is an arteest. More him.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I absolutely agree that Bob is the Ticket MVP these days. He may lack some of the folksy and/or vintage rock chops of some of the Ticket guys but his more contemporary pop culture knowledge coupled with his seemingly and most unexpected knowledge of urban music such as hip hop (think Kanye) is most astounding given his overtly religious proclivities. Bob is, as Jake once called him on IJB, a real station treasure. Would be hard to replace IMO. n

  9. I thought Jake was great on today's Hardline. Have no idea where Corbles is, and frankly, I'm digging his absence.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I would not have put George in my top three, and I'm not certain about Gordon, much as I like both those guys. Craig would have been in there for sure, and if not Gordon, I'm not sure about the third. I'm not so sure it wouldn't be Jake.

But going through Fred's analysis, I would have to say that the MVP on the most valuable show (Musers) is Craig by a considerable margin. My observation is that over the years I have been listening, his stature in the eyes of his Ticket colleagues has grown, while George's has fallen off some. (When was the last time you ever heard anyone call him "The Commander"? Yes, kids, they used to call him that all the time.)

So I have a feeling if I really sat down and thought about it, Craig would probably beat out Bob, but only by a half bike-length.

(And if you count CTO, Jeff Catlin would be in a photo finish with Craig.)

    ReplyDelete
  11. IMHO, I think Craig, the one True Muser, is the Ticket MVP. His sense of humor is pretty dry (Scattershooting on Friday is a must-listen for me), and he has something to contribute to every sport. Sturm comes off as a know-it-all.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't know who this guy is that is co-hosting with Rhynes, but good God he's awful. He's been kissing Mike's behind the whole show. I can't listen anymore. First time in a long time, I've changed over to the Fan.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No explanation of Corby's absence on air or on his Twitter would suggest it's a personal matter. Can't think of a reason why he would keep a trip to Augusta secret, unless there's some nondisclosure at work.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Cash Sirois is today's HL cohost.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why is Danny so angry all the time about everything? I was a big Danny fan back in the Orphanage days, but now he just seems so bitter and viciously dismissive of anything he disagrees with.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Isn’t it Machine’s wedding?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Corby is absolutely not invited to Machines wedding if that's what was being implied above as to the mystery reason for Corby's absence. The only Ticket guys invited are Jake and the Siroise twins. Even TC didn't get the invite. It's in Cali and very limited invite list.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anon 5:26
What are you referring to on Corby's twitter that would make you think its a personal matter? All I saw was he was traveling on an empty plane somewhere about 4 days ago. Perhaps he is adopting an abandoned dog in another part of the country? In all seriousness has anyone heard any reference on any of the shows as to his whereabouts?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, I've certainly been enjoying these Corby-free days, but I have to give the nod to....Jake! But I've come to really like Jake on BaD as well. Jake strikes me as one of the rare younger guys that doesn't really kowtow to all the PC nonsense of the day. I remember a few years back, BaD was discussing pets and animals. Jake was saying how there was this cat hanging around his door, and how the cat was really getting on his nerves. He didn't "dislike" the cat, but it was funny how he described that it was time for the cat to move on. Then I cracked up the time he told about the nosy little lady that had the cops coming because he dashed into the store for about 3 minutes leaving the kids in the car. He told her [in sarcastic Jake voice] "Fine! Whatever! I won't be here!" I'm not saying what he did was right, and I'm certainly not against cats; in fact, there is a neighborhood cat that meets me at my car because I always bring it food scraps from work. Guess I'm just saying I find Jake refreshing in todays society. He has certainly earned his place in Ticket lore....and he's entertaining, unlike certain host!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well, 655, Machine's wedding, per Jake, is in Vegas. So much for your inside information.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @218: I'm almost certain Jake and/or TC said on BaD the other day that it's in California...

Throw me on the bandwagon of enjoying Corby-free Hardline. I think Corby still has value to the station as the non-Gordon yuck monkey, but his overbearing nature and Mike's late-in-life deference to it is poison to THL. I agree with 757 above that Jake on THL doesn't work because he seems terrified of pissing off Mike. I love when Jake fills in on the Musers, though. I think the perfect THL pairing is Mike & Donnie. Yesterday's show was so good.

As for Ticket MVP, it's Craig by a long-shot. I love Sports Sturm and no one on the Little Ticket comes close to his sportsy knowledge, but his humor is pretty much Dad jokes and pales in comparison to the greatness of The Junez. George doesn't crack the Top 5 for me. While I occasionally hear flashes of his former greatness, his sports opinions these days are very "Old Man" / "Get Off My Lawn" and he seems very worn down by years of Gordo's wackiness.

I'd like to give Donnie Do honorable mention for his versatility. No one else can slide into another show as seamlessly as that guy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @7:37

Corby has never been shy about posting his comings and goings on Twitter. I imagine he posted the airplane picture just because it was so unusual. But nothing since. A host's absence is usually explained on air. Everything is bit material.

The lack of "disclosure" on his absence leads me to believe it's a personal matter that he will reveal at a time of his choosing. If at all.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @9:00

Updating myself. Corby has posted on Twitter that they went to Telluride.

Do you think Corby worries about the P1 prank factor while he vacations with his family?

    ReplyDelete
  24. In Vegas. Jake and his wife flew into San Jose and were taking the PCH down the coast then over to Vegas. Turning the wedding into a sightseeing vacay of sorts. He talked about it on air.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ty Walker and Jer do a Wrestlemania preview tonight from 7-9pm. These are generally entertaining even if you aren't a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fred, I understand all your points, but I strongly disagree that Bob doesn't have strong musical knowledge. In fact, he's pretty strong when it comes to hip-hop. Now, that happens to be music I don't care about, but it is music.

I think Craig Miller is the MVP, and I wonder why you didn't at least explain why he didn't make your top 3.

If I had to pick my favorite, which is distinct from MVP, I'd choose Gordo. But you are right that he falls ways short when it comes to sports, so he cannot possibly be the MVP of a sports station. But he's still my favorite host.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Over the years I have done a complete flip-flop on George and Craig. I used to think George ran the show and he was letting his little college buddy come along for the ride. Maybe it was just because Craig didn't contribute a lot of voices for bits. But my opinion of Craig has done a 180. In the meantime, George's presence has become less dominant. His detachment is not to the level of the OGW, but I think it is noticeable.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jake clearly stated on air the wedding was in LA

What's with anons coming on here just stating blatantly false statements? What's the motivation?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Probably just to aggravate you, Orange Shaggy. Or maybe some aren't hearing things correctly? A Russian bot? TELL US!TELL US! IT IS NOT SHARED! IT IS NOT SHARED!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I didn't hear the comment originally, but I heard it during the E-Brakes this morning. He said LA. I think the only reason I noticed was because I had seen mention of it on here. Perhaps at another time he elaborated on that and BOTH parties are correct, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tuned in Work in Progress this morning and caught just the tail end of their conversation with Lexi about his infamous ticker. I guess he was at the TMS in some capacity.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Straight from Jake: wedding was in LA. I tweeted humans he kindly replied.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anyone know why Justin and TC were not at Machine's wedding? I figured TC and Machine were friends because of the Blowout Podcast Network connection and Justin and Machine used to be a team on Saturdays so I thought it was a little odd only the Sirois Brothers and Jake were there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Has anyone else noticed the SportsDay app isn't showing the clips from the daily top 10? All I'm seeing are BaD radio's weekly podcasts (which are excellent by the way). But what's up with not posting the top 10 anymore? It's my main way to consume some of the shows!

    ReplyDelete
  35. @10:16 - I've noticed that also. I listen mostly via podcast and they haven't loaded a 'non-BaD' podcast in 2 weeks. What gives??

    ReplyDelete
  36. I now have April 19 circled on my calendar because that's the day they will stop running that Wailers Band spot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. But are they pickers? Moreover, are they grinners?

    ReplyDelete
  38. What a huge ticket miss. The Dez Bryant news breaks and Norm proceeds to go forward with a 25 minute interview of Randy White and Bob Lilly. The Ticket should have gone into all hands on deck mode for that type of once or twice in a decade breaking Cowboy news. Meanwhile the Fan has all their hands on deck the moment the news broke.

That's an organizational miss on behalf of the little Ticket. Thank goodness, BaD is on the scene to take the reigns. Simply the best show on the Ticket in my little opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Norm had to get in his amazing ironic notes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I disagree. Norm and Donnie were on a paid remote today. If Bob and Dan had been at the SMU Luncheon today, they still would have had to interview Pudge Rodriguez, even with the Dez story breaking, because SMU paid for the remote and interviewing the headliner is part of the deal.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nonsense Anon 1:47. They could reimburse. SMU going to sue them?

By definition it was a miss.

    ReplyDelete
  42. And then Bob and Dan do two segments with Rhett Miller. So much for them being different than Norm and Donnie and talking about nothing but Dez. But you guys know best.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeah the Rhett Miller segment felt way out of place, even when they pushed it to last. Are these contractual visits? Feels like the ticket in the business of doing RM a solid. Love that he's an authentic P1 and universally liked by the guys. But feels like I've heard a RM interview about a half a dozen times per year.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Did I hear Gordo correctly this morning when he referred to the Train Station Fitness show in the past tense? Is this true? Say it ain't so!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I heard that too. DiGianni was on this morning, but he did say he has shows booked until May 15 (I believe that was the date). That alone was kinda an odd thing to say. When you couple it with Gordo's statement, it makes me think Gordo might've let the proverbial cat out of the bag.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree that Norm and Donnie should have bailed but I guess that I did and went to 105.3 and 103.3 for them instead. I kept checking back on commercial to see if the Ticket was on the Dez story. The Ticket dropped the ball.... kind of like what Dez did last year.

I also agree that the Ticket has been doing way to much music lately. Sorry I don't care about Rhett or Jack Black or most of Mike's music stories lately.

Do better little ticket or I will have to cut you like the Cowboys did Dez.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Junior has quit the Ticket...... he is taking over where Art Bell left off Coast to Coast.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I disagree about the "breaking" Dez story. Way too much emphasis is placed on getting a story first these days, and that often results in media members talking about something they don't know much about. I prefer waiting till a few details are available, and then discussing, and that's how it played out for the Ticket.

    ReplyDelete
  49. KTCK's weakness is that it no longer handles true spontaneity well. The Dez story was a big story. But we still have all these sponsored segments to do.... what is on Mike's Mind? Community quick hits? E-news? We got to get Jake's News bit in. We already have Rhett booked. We already have Kip Keeno booked. Can't do 2 segments in a row in the morning, we got O-deck at 6:30 and replay yesterday's 8:40 bit, Muse in the News at 7:10, Scattershooting at 7:30, 8:40 bit, Corner at 9:30. All this crap has sponsors and you have to do them.

Somebody needs to say, "Guys, this is a big sports story and we are the big sport station. We need to do this story right now until we have said all we need to say."

    ReplyDelete
  50. ^^^I'm not sure it works that way. I assume time slots are booked, not necessarily the particulars of the content of those time slots. Or they could always do a make-good if that's not the case

I'd love to hear an employee chime in on that one

    ReplyDelete
  51. This could be a downside of talent longevity. They don't like getting out of their comfort zones. Which begs the question - could they pull off their 9/11 coverage again should a similar event occur?

    ReplyDelete
  52. 10:04: Why does the story have to be done right now? I know that most media members think it has to be reported ASAP, but their customers are people like me, and I don't have to have the news as soon as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @James....to me they're different than the print media, who I do wish would wait for more facts to come out most of the time. This also isn't a "wait till the facts come out kind of story." Everyone knew the meeting was coming and knew the most likely result of said meeting. I know I wanted to hear their immediate reaction and thoughts, which is why I listened to the Fan until BaD radio started. I don't care about an interview with Bob Lily when that kind of news breaks and I think a very small minority of their listeners would disagree.

On a somewhat related note, the Fan is gaining alot of ground with me simply from their evening and weekend shows. I was driving back to the Metroplex yesterday and was pretty much locked into the Fan because they still had a local voice on the air on a Sunday afternoon. The Ticket had SBNation radio, which isn't terrible, but I'm not choosing that over local talk either. It's very rare that I switch over the Fan and don't hear a voice I'm familiar with, regardless of how late in the evening or weekend time. I find myself tuned into 105.3 more and more these days.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I also find myself on 105.3 more and more. Their midday show is really pretty good.

Junior is my favorite P1 so I stay loyal in the morning but I am getting where I can't listen to Norm much anymore so I go to 105.3 and will jump back on to see what is on Bad radio unless it is a segment that I do not like (1:30 news). Then just jump back and forth during commercials between 1310 and 105.3 the rest of midday.

Around 3:00 I head over to 103.3 and stay with them until I get worn out on Dennis..... by then radio is off the rest of the day.

If I was drafting to start a new sports talk radio station my first two picks would be Bad Radio and then Gbag Nation. The Musers are getting to old to draft early.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I really enjoy the Sports Day Talk App. I get to hear the early morning Musers with out having to wake up to early. The biggest plus is to be able to fast forward past Gordo when he goes off the rails. I am in control and don't have to listen to what I don't like!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Anon 5:36 is that a joke about GBag Nation? Is Gavin actually still on the air? I left Dallas 5 years ago and the only radio personality I disliked more than GD was Russ Martin, who not only has a crappy radio show but also seems like a real scumbag off the air.

I am a die hard BaD Radio P1 and I definitely agree with 7:31 about the app, it had a rough go for a while but it's been amazing ever since they added the fast forward functionality
