A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

I Agree with KoKo
Robin Williams's (RIP, and with respect) films are overrated.
Also: Re: Junior's enthusiasm for the Anthony Hamilton National Anthem: I didn't have a problem with it from a "respect" point of view, and it was a little pretty, but I did think it was very obvious that Mr. Hamilton has absolutely zero range, and there was no other way he could possibly have sung it. No shame in that -- it's a real hard song for good singers to sing, so he can hardly be blamed for arranging it a version that fit his five-note range.
Also: According to the Musers, Corby has offered photographic evidence which, according to Corby, provides us with assurances that Kyler Murray is at least five-eleven. I'm surprised that he has not stated: "To be perfectly honest with you, I guaran-damn-tee you that Kyler Murray is the tallest person ever born, and it's not even close."
Well, this is a pretty cheap post. Not that it's your problem, but Your Plainsman has been underwater with personal and professional obligations since before Thanksgiving..
I am marinating one of my recently-rare STDs (Scorching Ticket Disquisitions), but it's not quite ready to loose on the Confessor.
In the meantime, leave an interesting, but nice, comment.
Many thanks.

Many of Robin Williams' movies are trash (Patch Adams) but many are quite good. The Fisher King is my favorite movie of all time.
ReplyDeleteI don't care how tall Murray is.
I didn't watch that National Anthem because it was part of the NBA all-star game, which has been lame for years.
Check out an obscure, hard to find film Williams made called "Being Human." Serious dramatic role, zero comedy, zero creepiness . His best role ever.
ReplyDeleteHe gets too much credit for being a funny guy who does dramatic roles. But he doesn't do them very well. I thought he was awful in "Good Will Hunting," for which he won an Oscar. What's that old Samuel Johnson line? "Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."
ReplyDeleteI think Being Human will change your mind.
ReplyDeleteStrongly disagree with you about Good Will Hunting. he was perfect for that role.
ReplyDeleteHis worst movies fall into the overly-used theme he perfected in Good Morning Vietnam (which was good): Zany guy comes in to take a job, ruffles the feathers of the uptight people in charge. If he uptight people in charge simply had a sense of humor, they'd understand how valuable (Williams' character) is in the job he fell into.
At any rate, I stand by Fisher King, which didn't fall into that category (or any movie category I know of), and was a true collaboration where Williams wasn't the center of attention.
Plainsman, I actually like the format of this post. Quick, easy to read, not many details to get bogged down on. Call it Plainsman Scattershooting
ReplyDeleteIf Corby says its true, then we by golly need to believe him. Surely it's not the OU homer in him talking.
ReplyDeleteCraig "Junior" Miller is wrong about how to pronounce "eclair."
ReplyDelete100% agree
ReplyDeleteYes Junior is wrong on the pronunciation of eclair. For some reason I found this scatter shooting post to be very pleasing from an aesthetic and content perspective. I think we are going to find out that Corby is only 5'9" and not 5'11"

Finally - Gordo is so proud of himself when he says Killer is "Champing" at the bit. That is a colloquial and antiquated phrasing of the more contemporary Chomping at the bit but he says it with such superiority as if he is the only person clever enough to use the correct term. Hurt's to miss that one Gordo.
Mm, maybe. But "champing" is still correct. "Chomping" is an original error that, through universal use, has become accepted usage (as you suggest).
ReplyDelete8:52: Can you really be criticizing/correcting someone's grammar when you said "Hurt's to miss that one"?
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'.
:)
Jake was also completely wrong about Long Johns being another name for eclairs, or even comparable. Eclairs are not even a donut, they are a pastry. I was happy someone pointed that out this morning, I think it was Junior. I was also very surprised that nobody knew what a long john is when Sconnie Bob brought it up yesterday, but then again I was born and raised in Minnesota and Long Johns are the specialty of the lone donut shop in my small hometown. They introduced bacon long Johns a few years ago: a long john (no filling, ever) with maple frosting and two strips of bacon on top. I don’t understand putting bacon on a donut but my wife is crazy about the bacon long john, it’s one of her favorite things about visiting MN.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I really miss about Dallas are all the independent Korean-owned donut shops with kolaches. The donut shops in Denver don’t have kolaches and they’re almost all chains (Winchell’s, Lamar’s, and DD).
Ate long johns every day in junior high, and no, they are certainly not eclairs.
ReplyDeleteCheck out Kolache Heaven near Stonebriar in Frisco. Not Korean, but pretty good lotchies.
On Lebanon, across from the Starbucks, yes?
ReplyDeleteNo, the one I'm thinking of is just off Warren, 3333 Preston N Dr #102. From Preston, go west on Warren and turn left into the collection of strip stores and big boxes. It's near the Best Buy. Big variety, fresh, nice folks.
ReplyDeleteThese are pretty good

They only make so many of each flavor every morning. The flavors are written on a chalkboard and when a flavor is sold out it gets erased from the board. Pretty simple concept of keeping people ordering only what is in stock.

Just checking...is anyone less interested in Corby's Oscar talk than Me?!
ReplyDeleteI listened to a couple of Oscar segments on the way home from work, and they were fine. No complaints here.
ReplyDeleteOscar free talk for me today.
ReplyDeleteJames: Are you gay? ARE. YOU. GAY?!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou mean is he blind
ReplyDeleteI'll still call them "wifebeater's", but thanks anyway snowflake Corby!
ReplyDeleteIn ode to the little ticket's nod back to thirty years ago and Jerry buying the Cowboys let me share my one small experience with this event.
ReplyDeleteI was in Miami on a business trip about 10 or 12 days before this all went down. I was driving down the road in my rent car. (In homage to Corby, I will go off-script here. Back then crime was so bad that the car rental companies took off their logo off of the rent cars, Hertz, Avis, etc. Seems like the bad guys were targeting these cars for robberies. There was a section of I-95 that officials said do not pull over if you have a problem, keep driving.)
Anyway, driving down the highway listening to an all-news station I hear a little clip that Jimmie Johnson will be the new coach of the Dallas Cowboys. I was like WOAH, and tried to keep my ears listening for more updates. Never heard anything else on that station. Bought the Miami newspaper for the sports news and nothing at all (pre-internet).
Got back to Texas and started looking at the DMN for news, asking friends, telling them what I had heard. They all thought I was crazy and I kinda started thinking I did not hear what I had heard.
When it went down I realized someone with some clout had killed that story after the one broadcast in Miami. (Possible that it was still unsubstantiated and the Catman at the time in Miami killed it.) Either way, I don't think that would happen today in the TMZ world in which we live.

Sounds like this uber guys saying the truth! Jake can't handle it!
ReplyDeleteEast Tx P1 - I live close to Zkolaches and can superlative Corby absolutely 128% guarantee that Zkolaches are the best in Texas.
ReplyDeleteAs a Texan by birth and a Marylander by my lovely brides insistence and because I know that the kolache debate will twist someone off, I'll throw out this HSO.
ReplyDeleteKolaches are the most overrated item in Texas next to pit beef up here. I've had them in West, Denton, La Grange, and Fredericksburg. Meh...
I think I'll go get a kolache right now, Ellis. BTW, Becca did a great job in the 8:40 bit of Canes, Trains, and Automobiles. Very funny.
ReplyDeleteIt was Krystina not Becca

Anon - 8:28 - I am an old, outside (barely) of the ticket demographic but have met Krystina at several remotes T-Stock etc. Really cool chick. I may get signed up on Twitter just to follow her.

I am new to the area and a massive Kyler Murray fan. Anyone know of a local radio station where I might hear some hot takes on his collegiate career and how he will translate to the NFL? It would be great too if they took some deep dives into his physical measurements and combine stats.
ReplyDeletee-lives, you're on a roll today.
ReplyDeleteSTD in process.
I plow my fields early. Doing it on the least coast gives me plenty of time to hear the morning Top 10 and PSAs on the little one.
ReplyDeleteCan we all agree that Season Three of True Detective was as dreary and pointless throughout as it was in the first couple of episodes?
ReplyDeleteAlso, I would like to point out that "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" is breathtakingly overrated by the Musers (apropos of their John Candy tribute this morning). I watched it a few nights ago, and it was sour and unfunny. John Candy -- si; grumpy Steve Martin -- no.
Candy was greatness. PTaA is overrated, but so too is....gasp....Steve Martin. On another note: I wish City Credit Union would cease and desist its prescriptive spots. STFU lady, already.
ReplyDeleteSteve Martin is funny in stand-up and sketch work and talented in other fields as well. But over the course of a movie, the schtick gets tiresome.
ReplyDeleteSteve Martin's best movie is Leap of Faith
ReplyDeletehttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104695/
Check out The Spanish Prisoner.
ReplyDeleteSteve Martin as a bad dude.
Arrow through the head, "let's get small, "I'm a wild and crazy guy," naw, his stand up isn't funny.
ReplyDeleteDirty Rotten Scoundrels - a vastly underrated Steve Martin movie.
ReplyDeleteWhere's that STD, Pjitt?
ReplyDeletePlainsman: your dissing of Robin Williams and then PT&A saddens me. PT&A was a comedy with substance, which is true of most John Hughes movies. Beneath the laughs, there's something else there. Same with Home Alone, even seemingly fluffy comedies like Sixteen Candles. The speech in the hotel room that Candy gives when Steve Martin chews him out is greatness. The last scene is greatness. And the "those aren't pillows" thing is hilarious.
ReplyDeleteJames: Too much "beneath the laughs," not enough actual laughs. Might have been a yukfest in the 1900s, just didn't move my yuk-meter when I watched it a few weeks ago. (I'd never seen it.)
ReplyDelete214: You're right, I'm delinquent. Can't be helped. If I can't get something up at least once a week, what the heck good am I?
ReplyDeleteAfter 9+ years of Ticket observations on shows that basically don't change (and, mostly, shouldn't) -- what more is there to say?
The irony is that my work schedule is such that I actually hear more Ticket than I have in awhile. Just no time to sit and essay.
James - I was never really a big John Candy fan, even if the Hardline did a segment in the last few days. I think Cool Runnings is probably my favorite just because my YD (young daughter) was in the demo for that movie. But I went back and watched the final scene of PTaA and this did show greatness.

While on the YouTube a movie suggestion showed up that was at one time way up on my charts. The Warriors. Had not thought about this for years. It came out in 1979 the year I graduated HS. It got major play in my demo at the time but probably to old for Mike and not recent enough to Corby & Danny. The trailer ran up the 40 year anniversary
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LLx0tBF1zw
And then 4 or 5 years later was The Outsiders. Diane Lane, oh so hot, then and now. So many stars got a leg up and/or start in this movie and, as is normal, the movie did not equal the book.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nepDMna1N_8
That is all. Back to my whiskey neat.

East Texas P1: I still have not seen the Warriors, but The Ringer has a podcast called Rewatchables where they discuss movies that are guilty pleasures and you are willing to watch them again and again. A few weeks ago, they did one on the Warriors. Worth checking out.
