No, this is not the STD. It's still baking.

I heard the Jake/Dan/Bob/Julie from a week or so back on Work in Progress last Sunday.
It had an odd quality. Very disjointed. No one knew quite what was going on or knew quite what to say, so there was a lot of interrupting. No one seemed all that angry. Everyone seemed childish.
It got started in a strange way. I thought the throw-in of the Country Music Saturday reference (by Bob, I think) in the middle of whatever else Jake was talking about -- it was a Jake segment -- was gratuitous and I didn't get what it had to do with what Jake was saying. I don't think Jake did either, and that's why he got up on his hind legs, upset that one of the hosts had to reach for a doesn't-follow reference to bust his balls. It sounded like they were spoiling for some kind of fracas with Jake.
I don't think this is the beginning of the end of anything -- does BaD sound appreciably different since then? no -- but I do think it pulls back the curtain a bit as to who is getting on whose nerves in this cast. We know Dan is somewhat thin-skinned. Bob can be, too. Jake, generally, is not. He fights back when challenged, but he doesn't usually sound like he's taking it personally. This sounded different, and it made me wonder if maybe there's some simmering jealousy there, some off-mic slights that have been building up to this. Bob and Dan toiling for years in what they probably consider The Ticket backwater, sacrificing a good offer from CBS to stick with The Ticket. Jake the very talented and smart upstart, all over the station, talked up as a guy who may be needing his own show before too long. Dan has a history of belittling underlings but it's tough to bully Jake. The whole thing had a flavor of remember-you're-still-only-a-producer-just-like-Gribble to it.
I don't have any predictions. I don't expect a series of similar jousts. But it won't surprise me if Jake finds something else to do in DFW media if there are no host openings on any of the shows in the next year or so. And none are anticipated.

I've always liked Work in Progress, the Sunday ayem extravaganza. Everything except the title, which makes even less sense now that it's an established weekend joint
What I want to mark today is the ascension of David Mino.
When WiP began, it was pretty much the Justin Montemayor Show, with Mino alongside. Nothing in the world wrong with that. Justin is a favorite of mine and I was glad he had his own show. Didn't have a problem with Mino, either, but he was pretty green. Had trouble getting out of his own way, lots of self-deprecating remarks about his inexperience, some uncertain starts to his segments, etc. But Justin kept the show going and it was cool just the way it was.
But someone -- face it, it was the New World Catman -- had patience and let the show, and David, find their path.
And they did. I listened last Sunday and was struck at David's polish. I've been listening, but his improvement has kind of snuck up on me. Dare I say it? He led that particular show. Seemed to helm most of the segments, was well-prepared. Justin was even back on his heels once or twice, board had to dump the guy. In fact, the show has a great balance now and it's a lot of fun. More fun now that Justin doesn't have to carry the load.
Well done, Justin, David, and Cat.

Those Juul stop-smoking-device ads. Not the worst we're-trying-to-make-something-utterly-scripted-sound-unscripted ads, but pretty comical nonetheless. ("I thought . . . OK, I'll try it.") What was that one that aired a few years ago that tried the same schtick?
(4)
I'm not anti-Christian -- raised in a church, was an officer at a major Protestant church, not so active now -- but I do wonder about some of those Good Contractor's List ads. The ones that are frankly evangelical, the message overtly religious and really with very little to do with the GCL. I don't find them offensive, but they're just the littlest bit creepy.
Here's what occurs to me: How would we feel if a Muslim business proselytized in Ticket ads in this fashion? Hindu? Druid?
(PS: Out on the Plains, I sometimes deal with self-professed "Christian businessmen." YHWH save me, I'd rather negotiate with Michael Avenatti's less ethical cousin than some of these guys.)

Someone in a comment a post or two back said they didn't care for those Sharon Moore good-citizenship City Credit Union ads. I think they're OK, she sounds like a nice lady, the good deeds sound sincere.
Here's the thing. Listening to these things for months on end, I formed a mental picture of her. Maybe mid-forties, early fifties. Blond. Hair parted in the middle, straight, mid-length, framing her face. Pleasant face, quite attractive but not glamorous. No Kelly "The Bulldog" McClure, she.
Looked her up:

God, do I get sad listening to those Tight Ends ads. Poor Savannah. Poor all of those girls. Although . . . woman's gotta work, the tips can probably get them through the week, pay the rent, get some pot pies on the table for the kiddo, pay the cell bill. Is it really more fun than a 9-5 gig?
Yeah, probably.

Nice hits, Plowman. But can't wait for your STD. |
I think the GCL ads make a lot of sense. Within evangelical Christianity, you're always looking for ways to tell people about God, specifically, people who aren't going to be in a church to hear about Him. The Ticket is known as a haven for hedonistic behavior, and therefore, it's assumed that many listeners are not churchgoers. Not all, not necessarily most, but many.
ReplyDeleteSo if you are a believer, and evangelizing is important to you, and you have the means, you're going to look for ways to get the word out to those who don't hear a whole lot about God otherwise.
Now, here's the thing: the GCL ads I have heard have all been positive. I haven't heard anything judgmental, nothing saying you need to change this or that about your life. The message is simply that God is good, and I'd like you to get to know more about Him, and if you are interested, then please consider coming to this event in April. If you aren't, then don't. I don't see the creepiness in there anywhere.
James, I don't necessarily disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteBut -- at the risk of starting a thread here that I'll have to shut down -- would you feel the same way if, instead of it being a Christian message, it were a Muslim or Hindu or atheist message?
Given The Ticket's running of these ads (by the way, do they run on any other stations?), could it even turn down a religious-themed ad from a rival religion without facing some kind of discrimination charge? A PR problem, if not a legal one? That I don't know.
Keep it classy, Confessors.
Hey, has my picture disappeared from my comments?
ReplyDeleteRE: Sharon Moore - Pretty much the image I had of her as well. I looked her up a few days ago and found that there's a YouTube video that shows her doing the ice bucket challenge.
ReplyDeleteTom Gribble said it best when he said, "it builds up, dude"
ReplyDelete@Plainsman: Yes, your image is gone. The browser indicates it's a missing image. Clicking through to your profile shows no image, and clicking the View Full Size link indicates the image file cannot be found by the great and powerful gooooglez.
ReplyDeleteGlad to be of service.
Thanks, 1038. Hope to repair shortly. That image needed some freshening up, anyway -- this site has aged me.
ReplyDeletePlainsman, I wouldn't have a problem if the ticket aired a Muslim-themed ad.
ReplyDelete(1) I agree with most of your analysis. However, to say that Jake isn't thin-skinned is to also say that you don't follow him on Twitter. Perhaps for the most part he's more careful on-air, but on Twitter not so much. His self-admitted quick temper that goes from 0-60 in one second (to paraphrase his own words) and the thin-skin that allows for such a temper is on full display via the happy fun goodtimes Twitterverse. I also disagree that Jake will go elsewhere in the market (or any other market) if the opportunity/money is right. He loves The Ticket. He loves it like the Musketeers love it. He also knows up close and personal the folks and the atmosphere he'd be dealing with anywhere else in this market. As regards another market: no way in Hell his wife is taking away their newborn from the domestic situation they currently have, much less uproot her own career--eh, buddy, she earns significantly more than Jake Z.
ReplyDelete(2) In lock-step with you on this one. Anyone else besides me notice that Mino sounds like a dead ringer for Dave Lane?
(3) Meh.
(4) I find the GCL spots neither creepy nor offensive. James put it best. The guy seems genuine. If, however, one attended a retreat and it turned into some sort of sales pitch, veiled or blatant, then I'd change my opinion. But there is no evidence of that so charity rules the days. Personally, I'd have no problem whatsoever with another religion paying for the same type of spot, as long as it's not disrespectful to another religion, race, creed, etc. Now, if we're talking about The Church of Satan, yes, then I have a problem. Not Wiccans, mind you, I mean TCoS or something akin to it. Why? Because, whether a member truly buys into it or merely thinks it's subversive, that is, a parody of "Merican Christian culture" that serves to point out its hypocritical adherents (of course this is true of ANY group of humans)...it is nevertheless disrespectful and intended as such. Indeed that is explicit in TCoS's core tenets. Thus I would take issue.
(5) Hey, the world can always use more kindness and some well meaning suggestions guiding us how to get there in a practical way.
(6) Virtue signalling on your, ahem, end, Plainsman (?). Feel sorry, feel genuine pity for the street walker--and to some extent the stripper. These women are working a legit, and I assume pretty well paying (tip wise, at least) job. They could work at a non-boob establishment. There are PLENTY of service industry jobs out there--at excellent restaurants, bars, etc., where one makes good money. They chose this route. IMHO taking pity insults them. My guess is that the vast majority of the employees like their gig.
Hardline, this crapping pants bit wasn't funny before, and it's still not funny
ReplyDeleteI don't follow Jake on Twitter, but I understand he can be both defensive and combative.
ReplyDeletePossibly his willingness to roll with the punches on air is because he doesn't want to do anything that jeopardizes his place in line.
@123
ReplyDeleteYou nailed it. Jake is smart, and therefore understands that it's in his best interest to go along to get along and bite his tongue. Alas, he slipped up last week and allowed Twitter/0-60 Temper Jake come to the fore.
P-Twizzle, what's your opine on today's 12:50 segment? I don't normally listen to ticket weekends, but today I was running errands and tuned in. If you didn't listen I'll leave it up to you to do your research, but it was pretty personal. At the end of the day, I don't care much for these guys personal lives.
ReplyDeleteI think the GCL ads are kind of strange. The guy is preaching to a certain segment of society; I would think a business would want to appeal to a wide audience, not just Christians.
ReplyDeleteI do find the Sharon Moore ads a little preachy; I listen to radio to be entertained, not to hear "do good things". Sanjay Gupta irritates me in the same manner.
As far as Tight Ends, anybody who read their Yelp reviews and still goes to that place deserves what they get. Food is mediocre and overpriced (even for the breastaurant concept), and service sounds like it is basically non-existent.
I'd rather listen to the GCL devotional than Brad Thomas' Sports Biz. I might enjoy hearing the reactions to somebody from CAIR doing an informational spot. The atheists I know might be more caustic than Satanists. They get off on poking at believers of anything.
ReplyDeleteI know the standing rule of "no personal lives commentary on the hosts" around here. Is it in effect even when they bring it to the air? Either way is fine. Not my circus.
Fair game if it's on the air.
ReplyDeleteI won't be "looking it up." What was it at 12:50 on 12/30?
Seacow got divorced. Dan and Jake kinda slipped up and referenced that Mike S. was "on the market" when they discussed Alex Bannister tweeting at Jake on BaD Wednesday. So Mike gave the story during Cirque while Jake co-hosted.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the gist of Sirois's tale? That is, did he give any concrete or even vague causes for his divorce? Having zero knowledge of any of this, I'm in no way surprised. Mike, per his own yarns, self description, etc, seems to be a 40-something living, behaving, and having the same interests of an early 20-something. Often times that is a recipe for one half of the marriage equation outgrowing the other. Well, all the best to the Sea Cow and his ex. Hope they both find happiness.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, right there with you on Gupta, 849am. Fallacy of the appeal to authority much, Dr. Gupta? Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteSirois said it was an amicable divorce. They both agreed the marriage needed to end. No kids to make it messy. He and his wife used the same lawyer.
ReplyDeleteI'm all about busting balls, but Bob doesn't take as well as he dishes. See bet concerning Aaron Judge vs Rougned Odor bases on balls.
ReplyDeleteThe Ticket subreddit is now private? Ummm.... ok.....
ReplyDeleteYeah, I noticed that too.
ReplyDeleteApril Fool
ReplyDeleteLame-ass April Fool joke if that's true. It's removed from my list of subscribed subreddits and, if I click on the message button that says it's a private subreddit, it takes me to a form to fill out.
ReplyDeleteGuess I'll go elsewhere to get my Ticket talk....
Whats up with rotten radio instead of BaD?
ReplyDeleteRotten Radio played during the mix but BaD has been on as usual since 12:15
ReplyDeleteJake addressed it on Twitter and on IJB. He was overly apologetic after the fact and just stressed how much both Bob and Dan had helped his career. He also said he was just touchy about the country music bit. They've found the thing that gets under his skin and they're using it. That's also the same reason Jake immediately went to "you wanna talk about the one thing you don't want brought up on air" to Dan. Then Dan got touchy and it just continued to escalate.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if the now suddenly private reddit page is either an April Fool's joke (if so, it's not a good one) or if it might have something to do with the Sirois divorce disclosure on Cirque? Meaning, some of the stuff that is bandied about the hosts on the reddit page is pretty personal and at times seems insiderish. I wonder if someone got to close to home on something regarding Sirois and/or his ex? I also wonder if someone said something to the effect that while Sirois gives full disclosure other like Dan do not--and perhaps made a claim, true, partially true, or not, about Dan's "this never goes to air" issue (some on reddit have speculated that it had to do with his marriage, hence I wonder about a tie in).
ReplyDeleteIf it isn't an April Fool's joke, it sure has an odd feel to it.
"someone got too close to home..."
ReplyDeleteI never got around to checking reddit today.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the early Dan he's trying to distance from. Baby and bad takes. Well, gee I might want to bury some of my past too. Is there a form to fill out?
Oh right. It's his show.
Meh. They got a rise out of Jake.
Pass the rolls please.
Sirois let on that it was going down last year. Told a few ppl. I don't know and don't really care why. Not my bidness.
MTC was cited for the origin of VSBB over at reddit. Or rather it was the citation source.
Thanks for keeping the lights on Pman.
r/theticket is back to normal
ReplyDeleteI do not believe this site was the origin of "vaginal slice born-born." I'm not sure but I think the phrase was one of those nonsense phrases that Gordon used to slip in during the brief silence before commercials, or other little dead-air slots.
ReplyDeleteGrubes' explanation of VSBB in the comments on this blog is what they meant
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense.

Nice find.
ReplyDeleteBesides moving the Observation Deck to 6:15, have you noticed that they have added a break between the Hardline open and Mike's Mind? They may be starting the show a couple of minutes earlier so that the commercial block between WTDS and Hardline open is not as long.
ReplyDeleteInteresting possibility.
ReplyDeleteAs much in awe as I am of Gordon's gifts, I do sometimes wonder if the Musers are getting . . . over-Gordoned. Moving him earlier in AM drive means that the listners who leave for work at 6:30 (more than leave at 6:00 to 6:30) will hear pure Musers content and less LGBTQ/excrement/pederasty content.
I have missed the past few days. When will the 8:40 bit from the day before be run?
The previous day 8:40 replay is still at 6:40. I'm assuming the idea is to make the Observation Deck a full segment that doesn't get cut short for the bit replay. Now there's a short sports-y segment at 6:30 leading into the replay.
ReplyDeleteAround 7:10 oh a whim Georgio and Gordo decided to call Dwaine Caraway to see if he would answer his phone and he did! They spoke to him for about 15 minutes. Dwaine was a good sport and Gordo provided a couple of tense moments but it was a great listen. Hope it can be found out there for everyone to hear!
ReplyDeleteLivinginreality: your assessment is spot-on. Can't believe Carroway was willing to talk about this, and take responsibility (mostly) for his actions. And Gordo asked some questions I was sure would cause him to hang up, but he didn't.
ReplyDeleteI'm still ticked at Carroway for giving the key to the city to Vick, but I was impressed with the way he handled himself this morning during the call.
I'm not 100% convinced he didn't know ahead of time they were gonna call, but that's OK.
There's definitely been some kind of edict from on high about being on time. WTDS has consistently been starting before 3 lately, and pretty much every Musers and BaD Radio segment has been starting a good 2-3 minutes before they had been. All the mixes have started earlier than usual too.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me there are two possibilities for altering the commercial breaks for a couple of minutes.
ReplyDelete1) They want their commercial block to sync up with "other" stations so there is no point in punching out when they go to break.
2) Just the opposite - they want to be in a segment when the other stations go to break.
I don't know which, if either, is the more likely strategy. I usually just stay on the Ticket.
It's most likely ratings and ad-related. I know I've heard them allude to the fact that it's important that their ads begin in the correct quarter hour.

ReplyDeleteI’m glad the little one will stop talking about Texas Tech now. Not because I’m not a huge fan....it’s just not one of the hosts can say Lubbock. That’s Lub Buck. Not Lub Bic. That is all.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'm in the vast minority and I know he's one of the greatest sports figure we've had in our fair berg.....but I'm ready for the constant Dirk talk to be over. Half of every single show on every single station has been somehow Dirk related for the last week or so and I'm burnt out. I finally just flipped over to music yesterday on the drive home because all three sports talk stations were running Dirk segments. I know it's the time of year where they're having a hard time filling segments anyway and this is low hanging fruit but I'm looking forward to next week when this is all over.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I know he's great, will be missed and we were extremely lucky to have him.
@Charles
ReplyDeleteWe all have our tune outs. The Dirk talk only lasts a day or two. I suffer through March Madness and the NFL draft, even though they are big sports stories.
Charles 9:55
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree.
Dirk is beyond great, but Junior Miller is speaking of him as if he were a god with magical powers.
ReplyDeleteThe numbers speak for themselves. He's one of the greatest of all time in the sport, and out of the galaxy compared to any other Maverick. I think Junior and the rest have pegged his greatness about right. As you say, "beyond great."
ReplyDeleteDD, I think you meant to say Kyler Murray, not Dirk
ReplyDeleteAll you Hardliner listener's, get ready for a brutal, bodybag-stuffing, bloody, Tiger Woods beat down from Corby today! Galloway was on B & S Friday. Yeah, he's sounding older but still funny as hell! He confirmed what I suspected all along; the p.c. pansie suits pretty drove him off!
ReplyDeleteDid it look like Tiger had gone a little Phil on Sunday? I think that Tiger has man-boobs now. It sure looked it on Sunday. Maybe Nike will start making a manzier.
ReplyDelete
