#The Ticket Too?

A long, long time ago, I wondered on this site if The Ticket were going to get in trouble with women.

At the time, my concern was with The Hardline.  With Greg Williams, Mike R, Corby, and Danny, the show would frequently take what I characterized at the time, and still recall, as a frankly misogynistic turn.

Even after HeeHoo got the boot, the show would frequently veer into that territory.

I'm not a politically correct guy at all.  But I really disliked the attitude toward women I heard from The Hardline from time to time, all three of the remaining personalities.  And I would also sometimes hear it from Dan McDowell.  Real disrespect and even hostility that was not just a bit.

At the time I thought:  Man, some of this Hardline stuff is really rough.  I wondered what would happen if some women's group decided they were going to make a name for themselves by urging listeners to boycott The Hardline and, more importantly, boycott advertisers who bought time there.  Get some picketers outside the building for photo opportunities for the local journal.

Never happened, of course, Dallas not being a hotbed of feminist activism.

And then, over time, The Hardline seemed to drop the hostility towards women, or greatly reduce it. In any event, I stopped noticing it.

I have noticed it some with Dan and Julie -- not too much, maybe just Dan trying to figure out if he's still the Sports Humorist with the realignment, nothing that made me punch out (I'm liking the show) -- but apparently something popped up the other day.  I didn't hear it and I'm not entirely sure what took place (something to do with Tyson Fury's training regimen and his wife) but the subject of The Ticket's relationship with women seems to have moved closer to the front burner.

We've all noticed The Ticket's recent celebration of The V1, a phrase I personally dislike -- talk about objectification of the female -- but looks like it's here to stay.  And Julie's participation in noon-3 seems to have been a success.  So seems to me that things are taking a turn for the better in terms of gender outreach.  Which I don't necessarily favor when it looks like pandering or bowing to PC pressure (which Julie's elevation doesn't feel like), but it beats what the station was throwing out in its earlier years.

But perhaps there's some way to go.  With #MeToo reaching even Dallas, there may be women out making picket signs as I sit here typing.

  1. Hopefully the #metoo movement doesn't take on MTC with the objectification of beautiful redheads. That would be tragic :)

On another note involving terms that just seem dumb such as V1, I offer up butt hurt. I think this is a very homophobic term and seems inappropriate in this day and age. It basically implies someone acts as though they are taking it in the arse hence their reaction to something "butt hurt"

  2. Eh. IMO that's too sensitive. There are a lot of ways to hurt your ass. And the male homosexual doesn't have a monopoly on anal.

  3. This redhead looks a lot like the actress from Poldark, Eleanor Tomlinson, who is quite fetching herself. Would this be one in the same?

  4. Have you heard the new station IDs? They are now putting 967 in front of 1310.

And is the Hardline going to do a power hour ala the Morning Musers?

  5. Interesting observation, 102. As l see it, the difference between my display of comely redheads and referring to female Ticket listeners as "V1's," objectification-wise, is that "V1" identifies all females solely by their possession of a sexual organ, a highly impersonal synecdoche-like construction. My posting of redheads, on the other hand, celebrates the beauty of the entire person being displayed.

    Ah, we'll figure it out.

  6. So it's 1151 pm Wednesday night and Rotten Radio is on. Is this an anomaly? If so, why is it on? If not, when did this start? I know Ferrall has been gone since the end of '19, but they've been airing whoever CBS trots out during that time slot. I stopped tuning in after The Top Ten weeks ago, so I assumed CBS man was still in that spot.

  7. Plainsman, is that you? Guy who as recently as last week used the phrase "booth tuna" to describe the attractive women who staff conventions and other large gatherings?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Anonymous 1:02, I believe you may have the etymology of "butt hurt" wrong. See definition 5, sub-definition 3 here: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Butt. Short version: "butt" can mean "very" or "extremely," so "butt hurt" would mean "very hurt," essentially.

  9. David, before you get akl "gotcha" happy....ooops, too late. Anyways, Pman was using a term (ugly one, for sure) that is part of the convention business's lexicon. He didn't make the term up.

    1. In regards to "booth tuna" being convention business lexicon, as someone who has worked in and attended many conventions I've never heard that phrase in my life. The most derogatory one I've heard is booth babe. Booth tuna isn't even coming up with a cursory google search.

  10. Besides flipping the frequencies, the station ID no longer ends with "a Cumulus station."

  12. Firstly, that is NOT Eleanor Tomlinson from "Poldark" (but I would admit there's a striking resemblance).

I always took "butthurt" (a phrase I use a lot) to equate to getting kicked in the posterior; nothing really homosexual in nature. I see it used a lot on "clean" forums (which has some gay members) and nobody seems to take offense to it. Anyhoo ....

I've never liked the "V1" identification, either, but I've heard a few female The Ticket listeners use it to describe themselves so I guess (most) women don't find it offensive. Personally, I just think it's kind of stupid and a cheap joke to counter the "P1" which means "Primary listener", but it can be distorted to something way more juvenile, obviously.

Finally, yep, with the whole #MeToo movement and political correctness thing going on, the The Ticket needs to be careful. Such as Corby and Danny referring to Corby's wife (Julie I think is her name?) as the "woman that lives in his house for free" etc. needs to stop. Honestly, as much as I like Danny (I kind of know him from playing gigs and stuff) he needs to shut up more on the program. Thankfully, Bob has kind of muted Corby a bit because he knows his stuff and wants to talk so 'The Snake' has become slightly less annoying thankfully. Also, more to the point of this particular issue being discussed, Bob is a extremely respectful and careful host and would never say or do anything to disrespect women which might help curb the other two on that particular show.

  13. @Anon 11:58: Cat mentioned in his AMA that he was working on getting approval from the corporate overlords for going rogue on the late night stuff since Ferrall was gone. Apparently him being gone as somehow modified their obligations for that time slot. He particularly mentioned sticking Rotten Radio in that slot as there was so much compiled Rotten Radio content it would be quite a while before anything repeated.

@Euronymous: Thanks for the confirmation. I wasn't completely sold that it was her, but the resemblance was so strong that I thought it might be a younger, less Hollywooded-up her.

  14. Dan's being very annoying today, not funny...just annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @12:44 - No worries. As I said, there is a major resemblance.

  16. Dan is Dan. I always find him mildly amusing. He never annoys me.

  17. @1244
Thanks for the info, bud. I hope we get an actual JV show in that slot. Go head to head with The FAN.

  18. slinky 146, interesting you should say that about Dan on Thursday. I was able to listen to quite a bit of the show that day -- the one with Doocy, right? -- and I'm thinking: man, what is wrong with this guy? So sour, so not-getting-to-the-point.

I've thought Dan + Jake is pretty good. But yeah, yesterday he was a drag on the proceedings.

  19. The banning of Richie Whitt on Cumulus DFW airwaves only speaks to the spiraling of this station. Though my opinion is probably in the minority, I don’t find the latest station changes to be good. Corby and Danny seem to be ruining Bob. And I reject the notion that this will take time. This thing is flat out boring. It is tired. NO FUNERAL! *BANG*

  20. Plains, that's exactly the time I'm speaking of, the 1:30 news. I was like...can you just shut up! I'll bet Deuce was thinking the same.

  21. Celery, you're wilting. You really think Whitt was banned? I have a doomsday prepper community for you to look at. Lot's of lakefront property still available. Your condo is guaranteed to survive every disaster sans a direct asteroid hit. If interested, please contact our executive realtor, Richie Whitt.

  22. WTDS should be rebranded WTS. Corby trying to be the Alpha mostly falling flat at his attempts at humor. Less Corby. Mike is missed, he let the game come to him.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I do believe it was a lady P1 who coined the term V1 on a WTDS birthday shout-out...and it was the larger female audience of the ticket that took up the mantle of V1 and have turned it into the female ticket listener identifier.

The Ticket is more or less following the lead of their fans.

  24. Also Julie for midday producer.

    ReplyDelete
  25. No knock against anyone but the 3-7 show just kinda sucks. I don't make it a point to listen. I just kinda tune into something else.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I listened to some of the 3-7 show driving home. Ultimately, pretty bad. It doesn’t work. I’ll be listening to music on the way home from now on. I feel bad for Bob. Suck City.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Richie Whitt is not likable. He also cashed in on negative Ticket press. But it worked! He was able to turn the Greggo story into a worthwhile read (and short-lived radio career). He also predicted what all of us could have said-some day the Ticket will fade in popularity. This is a station that built its popularity on guy talk and host availability. Hardline doesn’t do bits, and short of Gordon’s voice work, there is very little creativity out of the Musers. Julie is not good-her defenders are numerous, but if you simply listen, she gives nothing of interest. Jake tries. Opinions like space is is super gay and criticizing people that get married at historic plantation sites is just flat-out stupid: people are CLEARLY into space since the SpaceX stuff is good for click bait...and pastoral scenes make for great photos (and even wedding venues). Norm benefitted from being one of the only radio sports guys in town. No one else on KLIF did sports. HSO-if Norm did pure sports and took calls, his show would beat the sports competition in his time slot. Too bad the Ticket crowd can’t just let the guy do his job. Too much talk about music across the board. Much less mixing with the common guy. It’s what always happens. Hard to be innovative for this long. Rhyner was smart. The bottom will drop put once the one true Muser leaves. The listening audience has aged out...no new interest. But by all means, keep telling yourselves everything is getting better. The Fan sucks. I choose podcasts.

  28. Celery, I'd like to introduce you to a fellow commenter: Celery, meet Surly. Surly, Celery.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Celery, at one time KLIF had Norm in AM drive, Mike Fisher doing Noon to 3 I believe then Wally and Leon from 6-9. They were searching for an identity at the time but sports wasn't their bag. Fisher drove me away from KLIF to the Ticket and Norm moving over sealed the deal.

When/if they ever start taking listener calls we will know the battle is lost.

  30. Don't know much about the radio station business but with the marketing switch to the FM side of things do we think that the good old 1310 side will be sold off soon as a ways to cut costs? Leaving only 96.7 and Sport Day App. Not sure if there is a large cost to having two signal?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I’m always genuinely curious what the numbers are for over the air vs stream...most people I know stream the station...but I may be biased as a out of dfw P1

    ReplyDelete
  32. Boo, if the January number are true, over the air had a 1.5 and streaming had .04.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Probably holding onto two signals isn't prohibitively expensive (especially on the AM side), but if you're looking at the bottom line, you'd have to ask yourself how many listeners really listen to AM radio anymore? Terrestrial radio is rapidly becoming a thing of the past due to satellite and other streaming services (despite the commercials they run telling you otherwise). So I'd be surprised if even FM stations really do great anymore. Yet, if you're going to be a relative station at all, I think you have to emphasize the FM aspect pretty heavily. The Fan and ESPN are both FM stations and have been since their inception I believe. The Ticket needs to stay relevant and part of that is being an FM station.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If that's the case, they shoulda done that 10 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @ 4:14 - Yeah, but how long has The Fan been around? ESPN has been around longer, but has never really posed a threat to The Ticket in terms of ratings.

Listening to something Dan McDowell said a couple of days back, he said the new 96.7/1310 new introduction is an effort to "rebrand". If we go by that, they want to be identified first and foremost as an FM sports radio station. I think, eventually, the 1310 AM aspect will just fall away and it will become a Spanish music station or something ( at "the enchilada end of the dial" or whatever Junior used to call it).

  36. Geico should shoot another Pinocchio commercial...like where he could be saying that Corby's a good singer!

  39. Per reddit, Norm reupped. And Dan Bennett went over Cat to make it happen. Evidently, Cat wasn't on board and was ready to make changes. FWIW.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I saw that too, 1253. If true, that too bad because so far I'm mostly liking the changes. I will admit that I'm partial to 3-7 over 12-3. For me to say that is incredible since I haven't been able to listen to 3-7 for over 5 minutes at a sitting for years now. I said mostly liking due to being less and less sold on Super BaD. I'm beginning to see chinks in Jake's armor. I'm beginning to see that while deserving and in a fundamental way ready for prime time, he's not a finished product by any stretch of the imagination. I also think Dan needs to dial it back a notch or four. To me it's obvious he's trying to make sure everyone (CTO) know that he still has his youthful fastball. At times it makes for uncomfortable radio. And this isn't Stern so this isn't a good thing. As to 3-7, the more Bob asserts himself and the scarcer Danny makes his presence known the better this thing gets. Danny's good for A segment and has nice add ins throughout the show. Bob's getting more comfortable with each passing show and as a result is SOMEWHAT putting a matte finish on Corby's Corbyness. Good stuff. I think 12-3 is going to take a lot of time, experimenting, and even off-air discussions between Dan and Jake and/or Cat interventions to find its sweet spot.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just remember Dan Bennett was Norm's AM drive time producer at KILF. They go way back and lots of history there.
