I was getting set to do an article on some early observations on 12-3 and 3-7, when ConfessorAnonymous 415 posted yesterday to the previous article (lightly edited by MTC):
So far I'm mostly liking the changes. I will admit that I'm partial to 3-7 over 12-3. For me to say that is incredible since I haven't been able to listen to 3-7 for over 5 minutes at a sitting for years now.
I said mostly liking due to being less and less sold on Super BaD. I'm beginning to see chinks in Jake's armor. I'm beginning to see that while deserving and in a fundamental way ready for prime time, he's not a finished product by any stretch of the imagination.
I also think Dan needs to dial it back a notch or four. To me it's obvious he's trying to make sure everyone (CTO) know that he still has his youthful fastball. At times it makes for uncomfortable radio. And this isn't Stern so this isn't a good thing.
As to 3-7, the more Bob asserts himself and the scarcer Danny makes his presence known the better this thing gets. Danny's good for a segment and has nice add-ins throughout the show. Bob's getting more comfortable with each passing show and as a result is SOMEWHAT putting a matte finish on Corby's Corbyness. Good stuff.
I think 12-3 is going to take a lot of time, experimenting, and even off-air discussions between Dan and Jake and/or Cat interventions to find its sweet spot.

These observations mirror my own to a large degree.
Dan and Jake: In general, I think this show is good, better than recent Bob and Dan. I do think Jake has settled in very well -- it's Dan who seems to be thrashing about a bit. He's clearly the boss of the show, which is fine. But not having been the boss of the show for all those decades, he's having some trouble figuring out how he should be pitching his presentation. "Dial it back a notch or four," says Anonymous, and that puts it pretty well. He seems to be pressing. It's not that he hogs the show -- that's neither fair nor entirely accurate -- it's that his role as the sarcastic gadfly hovering around the stentorian Bob doesn't sound quite right without Bob there to puncture. He's a naturally intelligent guy -- he should just relax and broadcast instead of constantly setting up his next sarcastic observation, looking for angles for jokes, a process that (you guessed it) bogs down the show. I have pretty much no complaints about Jake, except to say I'd like to hear a little more from him.
Corby and Bob: After an uncertain couple of weeks, this show has taken off. I listened quite a bit over the past few days, and I thought it was an enormous improvement over legacy Hardline. Bob is so much more comfortable, so much so that he is really remaking the show. Corby is proving to be a solid equal partner, and he has dialed back the Corbosity. Danny has done a good job of picking his spots. A very enjoyable listen.

And, by the way: Are you catching The Ticket's promos once again saying they're the number one sports talk station? I don't have details, but I believe the latest book shows overall victory over The Fan. But no one's making much noise about this; The Eagle beat 'em both in the demo, did it not? (I'm not a ratings maven).
I still like to imagine an alternate universe in which Bob and Jake teamed up for an incredibly sportsy BAD, and 3 to 7 was Dan and Corby being dueling smart-asses.
ReplyDeleteRight there with you, DD.
ReplyDeleteI think the take about 3-7 is spot on. Bob and Corby are good together, and getting better daily.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the Jake and Dan so much, but I have been on record here as saying that I don't rate Jake nearly as high as others do. So I'm not surprised that the Jake and Dan show is a notch in the downward direction from BAD.
Same here James. Jake does not have a fastball and never has. He's a solid 5th spot in your rotation guy at best and maybe more of a long reliever. I got to tune in 12-3 yesterday for the first time in a few weeks and it sorely misses Bob keeping them sort of on track. Jake defers to Dan and it just becomes guy talk but not classic guy talk ala classic Hardline.
DeleteJake and Dan don’t excite me. Nor does Bob and Corby. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark (or in this case, Ticketland).
ReplyDeleteCouldn't disagree with you more, Euronymous. Specially regarding Bob and Corby. I'm enjoying the shit outta 3-7.
ReplyDelete@1:20 I'll check out some more 3-7 then. Perhaps I just haven't heard a large enough sample size.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the red head that @The Plainsman posted this time really does look like Eleanor Tomlinson from "Poldark" (little known fact: Tomlinson is actually a natural blonde, but who cares, right?)
Does anyone know why they changed the open for 3-7 already? Did Greggo complain or something?
ReplyDeleteWho is Greggo?
ReplyDeleteBob was a much better governor on Dan's worst impulses to get bogged down or wander off course than Jake is. I like Jake but Dan the last week has been a total whip for me. I'm hoping it settles down after a bit longer but I've punched out to music twice this week during BAD which I have almost never done.
ReplyDeleteExactly. I just think Jake is a weird amalgam of Bob and Dan - decent (not Bob level) sports knowledge but also digs the raunch humor. Problem is that once Dan starts going, Jake joins in instead of trying to get it back on track. I dunno. Never been a Jake fan. He's over the top and way too much.
DeleteWho is Greggo? Is that a serious question?
ReplyDeleteNo, it is not a serious question. The SurlMan is having you on.
ReplyDeleteI think Dan is mad about the changes. His show got torn apart and its acknowledged senior member got promoted to the choicest position in DFW radio. He got left behind. He may not have had much notice of what was going on, and that makes him mad, too. (Given his penchant for disclosing inside station stuff, or at least hinting about it, that probably wasn't a bad idea.) He's not accustomed to running a show by himself, more or less. Jake is tip-toeing more now than he ever did when he was the sniping outsider, trying to make things work with a notably thin-skinned partner.
And now Dan sees the very positive reaction that 3-7 is getting, he sees his old partner working very well with a new partner.
Dan is a really talented guy who can be very entertaining. Very smart. He can lead a major show on a major station. But he's a shoulder-chip guy who needs to be doused once in a awhile. He'll calm down eventually -- I'm sure there are some early Ticket adopters out there who remember the very rocky early days of BaD -- and Jake will step up. There may be some fireworks but eventually 12-3 will find its way.
I think it would be great if Jake has a dog that is a moron.
My point is, Greggo hasn't been on the station for over 12 years--nearly half of the station's entire existence. The Ticket seems to be struggling to attract new listeners. Mike R is gone. Why would this new show include clips of some guy that a large portion of potential listeners don't know. I also think it's really dumb to close out the show with the Rhynes "stay hard/keep jammin'" drop
ReplyDeleteI think that's more a function of them trying to pay homage to what has come before. It's the "right thing to do" kind of thing for mostly Mike and to some degree the show that set up the ticket and allowed all of the currents hosts to have these jobs and lives. The HL was the show and I think eventually that stuff will be phased out.
DeleteI started listening to the ticket regularly at the exact same time as BaD started. I always liked Bob & I've always tolerated Dan at best. I don't question his talent or skill but his chosen avenue of humor etc just doesn't work well for me. I think they will find their way given time I'm just not sure they will be allowed that time given the current status of things in the market
ReplyDeleteI don't think The Hammer has any say in what drops get played. I believe that was settled on as part of his formal departure.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a whole lotta Boomers in this thread
ReplyDeleteall of this Jerry audio....BRO!
ReplyDeleteYou're really trolling, Surly. Regardless, I agree with your points re: the intro and the Mike sign off. Move on already. Greggo forced his way out over a decade ago due to his behavior and Mike decided to leave. It's been a month since the new lineup was put into place. Move on.
ReplyDeleteHaven't listened to 3-7 in a while now. Am I missing something? Siriusxm has been my friend.
ReplyDeleteLine 4 Guy now doing The Reconsider Lounge
ReplyDeleteWas F'n genius. I have no doubt he is a pro comedian as his effort last night was better than an amalgam of the top 0.001% of any of the Reconsider fake acts Danny has penned!
Looking forward to that going forward.
Has any Confessor used "GiveMeTheVIN.com"?
ReplyDeleteNo, but I am in my underwear.
ReplyDelete@7:52 I, too, think Line 4 Guy is a professional comedian. From what I've heard, he's a friend of Dan's from back in Ohio.
The password is . . . amalgam.
ReplyDeleteSirois as an everyday host would drive me crazy. Goes from soops caz to yelling and talking a google mph in .0001 and does so the entire show. Wanna bitch about superlative Corby? Sirois is right there with him. Sorry, I know he's real popular with the online commentariat, but that is one tough, often knee jerk and uninformed yet stated with certitude, Corby sans the hair fairy, listen. I'm sure he's a great dude, great hang out, and all that jazz, but his role as producer and once per week show is where he needs to be.
ReplyDeleteSirois has been hilarious busting Danny and Corby's chops over their glaring lack of knowledge on the Coronavirus. Sirois was trying to reign them back in and told them let the experts make the determination on danger.
ReplyDelete12-3pm needs to do a deep dive how corona is affecting porn.
ReplyDeleteThey did discuss Corona Porn the other day actually...
DeleteRobert Wilonsky is SO great. Love that guy. If he were a 3-7 co host I'd listen everyday. Stopped listening once Jack Imp got the 12-3 slot and Sturm moved to 3-7. It's been great listening to Snake and Dingu again this week with the guest hosts.
ReplyDeleteAfter this week will be back to only occasionally listening to the gentle musers when in the car in the morning.
Stay Hard Old Grey Wolf!
