What are these guys going to talk about with no games?
The NBA season suspended, and other individual tournaments and games are either cancelled or in danger of cancellation. MLB? NHL?
And its inevitable that someone at Cumulus Dallas will test positive. A host? Think about those shared microphones and boards, and the close quarters in the studios.
Because The Ticket doesn't focus exclusively on sports, it will probably be in better shape, host-preparedness-wise, than its sportsier competitors.
I hope all Confessors stay safe, exercise appropriate cautions, get medical care when things look iffy.
They didn't talk sports after 9/11. In fact, it was their finest hour.

Outside of that, I foresee a lot of boring interviews with various coaches, GMS, and owners about the repercussions of all this. Yawn.

Remember, you can argue all you want about how ratings are not "real". But the people who actually pay money to The Ticket for spots know they are real.
Except for the fact that when RW was going against THL and was getting his ass handed to him in the ratings would constantly claim that ratings weren't the real measure of success: the amount of and the type of advertisers (the size, amount paid, and visibility of the advertisers) is what counts. Now he implies a different narrative. Go figure.

Followell is a mouthpiece for the Mavs. No player, coach, owner has ever done anything wrong/questionable, everything is fine, if the record is bad there's a dozen excuses on the ready. It's so transparent he has shed all personality.

The casualties from the economic fallout are going to far, far, far outweigh the actual virus! I have a scientist friend that specializes in cancer research says this is nothing more than a newer strand of flu virus with somewhat different components. There is no need for all this hype! DeleteMy only axe to grind is that he's another dead-air guest that leads me to change the channel. The mental gymnastics he plays to paint everything in a positive Mavs light is stomach-churning and transparent. You're his mom or something, and that's cool, but he offers nothing. I don't expect him to be critical of the Mavs...but maybe The Ticket should keep that in mind when wanting to have MEANINGFUL Mavs talk.

ReplyDeleteThe fact is, we just don't know that much about this COVID 19 right now - the effects, the duration, anything really. I do tend to agree that I'm sick of fucking hearing about it, but it's THE hot story right now and it's not going away anytime soon. As far as another strand of flu? Possibly, but it's a strand that nobody has any immunity to. I don't think it's end times, but precautions must be taken even if we don't like the results.

ReplyDeleteThat's what sports talk is at its core. Speculation and historical analysis. What makes it grand is lightning-in-a-bottle personality. Generally, the ticket has that in spades and it translates across all subjects. Some can handle it more delicately than others, but that is why the ticket shined during 9/11. The approached a subject they knew nothing about, just as their listenership didn't, and sussed it all out in real time.
I don't tune in to 1310 for expert analysis of, really, anything. I tune in for the people.
Which is why my ears listen no matter the news of the day. Radio friends they remain. Generally highly entertaining ones.

ReplyDeleteI was listening to WiP this morning and they did as good a job as they could to keep the show interesting with, essentially, nothing to talk about. Anyway, one thing I believe Mino mentioned was as of tomorrow he said that only the "production staff" would be the studio. So we're to assume, the board operator, a producer, and maybe the Ticker guy/girl? Are the hosts going to be doing the show from their homes (like Norm has done in the past) or some other remote location? . That seems like it would make for very awkward radio. Maybe I misunderstood, though. We'll see.

ReplyDeleteI can see it. Like today, I could not find a simple loaf of bread anywhere! I went into Winco, could not believe the amount of people with absolutely over flowing carts, and the check out lines were crazy! Drove as far as Buckee's in Terrell, no bread; stopped at several convenience stores, nothing! This is nothing but sheer panic. there are infants and elderly that cannot get necessary [possibly life sustaining] items due to the chaos. Are there going to be people infected, yes, hundreds or thousands, but the vast majority will simply recover, and this will run it's course in a couple of months. But there will be millions of people drastically affected by the economy, and I mean drastically! The desperation will cause a huge spike in crime, not to mention suicides. Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but stripping people of job security is not the answer. The message should be sent to continue with all precautions (washing hands, limit as many social events and self quarantine if needed. But this sending out message that "hey, you may not have a job for months" is irresponsible. Slinky is right.

@ Gopher - I'm sure almost none of the ads the The Ticket runs are in house productions unless it's for the station itself. I know the other spots are created by ad agencies and run on other stations.

ReplyDeleteI'm listening to bogus Hardline doing their part to escalate the fear. They're talking about the 60 yr old that recently died that had the virus but had absolutely no symptoms. My question is, how do they know it was the virus he died from. It could have been heart related; it could have been high blood pressure from all this scare! I just stopped at a convenience store to refill my 32 oz drink. I was told I had to use a new cup for fear of spreading the virus. I just didn't want to waste a cup but I obliged. I told counter person to watch me, and explained "ok, tell me how this is any different from what I was going to do." I slid the cup from the stack, simply touched ice release (only using the cup) then soda button (only using cup) but now, I've touched new cups, as well as new lids and straws. So I asked her, "now, explain how that was safer than what I was going to do?" Of course she realized my point. I said that I know it's not her fault and wasn't trying to give her a hard time, and pretty much joked it off with her. Sometimes I fill the need to recapture a little bit of commonsense, which we are rapidly losing!

ReplyDeletelack of access to the entire ratings has generally been the flaw (purposeful or otherwise) in any "reporting" radio ratings. KTCK is an oddity because not only are ratings spread across a pair of frequencies, it is also considered as one of the most-streamed stations in the world. Additionally, you don't "just add the numbers together". There is math that has to be calculated to get an accurate result, per Nielsen.

It's not definite, but apparently they're having a meeting with Catlin today about it. That should be interesting and weird. The technology is in place, but not having the hosts in the same room with the producer, board op, and ticker guy/girl should make for some awkward radio for awhile.

Difficult times indeed, but I believe @The Plainsman asked if we could steer away from virus talk and concentrate more on The Ticket. As he said, there are plenty of other places to vent about this catastrophe than here.

Isn't that what they're talking about on the ticket? Even if you put something new, which is welcomed, it's still going to be a topical subject.
ReplyDeleteI think posting about The Ticket's coverage of COVID 19 is fair, but long rants about this or that are not pertinent. The "topical subject" should stem from @The Plainsman's post, not devolve into frustration/disbelief/anger about the current situation. If a host says something that you find implausible, say so, but leave it at that. There are other things to discuss relevant to the station right now. For instance, I commented they might be broadcasting from their own homes soon or Blake as the new producer from 12-3. That kind of thing. It can be done, but it takes some discipline.

Think about it, most Sonics, infact, all Sonics, don't have the parking or space to accommodate a bunch of 18 wheelers.
