  1. I rented the Rhyner documentary last night and thought it was well worth it. A little overly dramatic at times, but overall a very interesting look at the history of Dallas radio, the start of the Ticket, and Rhynes (and all that implies). One moment even moved me to tears, a good little sports cry.

I thought Greggo looked quite good, like he's been living healthy and thus settled on a middle ground between gigantic early-Ticket Hammer and cracked-out looking post-Ticket Hammer.

I also purchased the Q&A with Rhyner and the filmmaker Crystal Vasquez, whom I find very interesting, and it was also a good watch except for Skin's involvement.

  3. Thanks for the review, Colorado P1. I had been debating renting it myself. Glad to hear your good review.

You did this via Vimeo, correct? Or is there another platform it is available on?

  4. Thanks to Colorado P1 for reposting from his post just before I opened up the new thread. Looks very helpful for Confessors.

  5. Will always love what the man did and am forever grateful. But, eh, buddy, I"m Rhynered out. Irish Exit my ass.

The departure and the doc are 3-5 years too late, that is if you wanted sustained, serious and widespread notice. The DFW reached peak Ticket interest around 2010. By 2015 the shark jumped and the long coast down the hill began. Sorry to say it, but it's true.

    All those years ago.

    All things must pass.

  6. Yep 5:39, via Vimeo, $6.99 to rent for 48 hours. I'm not aware of any other platforms.

  7. Ticket related: D Magazine ranks The Ticket's tier 2-3 shows

The dude has JJT down to a tee:

It’s something like: here is a BAD take that might not be BAD so much as it is AVERAGE or something that people aren’t ARGUING about and I am going to try to resuscitate it by SPEAKING in capital LETTERS occasionally, so it’s like an ARGUMENT but again no one is ACTUALLY ARGUING THIS.

  8. Does jjt count for quotas? The dude is probably only 3%-5% from being Sean king. I guess one just ain’t enough in the crt 20’s.

  9. Found on Reddit, Rhyner's 'Square One' no longer on The Athletic. He's asking for ideas for a new home.

  10. Haha! 212 you JUST beat me to the punch!

Please see my comment above (825). While I'm surprised the plug was pulled this quickly, the mere topics under discussion sans one on The Rangers and one on The Cowboys, would seem to ensure a short-lived partnership. A/nd there's always the possibility that something else went on behind the scenes, some sort of fundamental disagreement over expectations--specially from The Athletic's POV.

Frankly, other than the Razor Reaugh episode, it wasn't must-hear. Most of Mike's MInds weren't must-hear, and they were 7-12 minutes long.

My guess is that it's a combo: Rhyner thought TA knew what they were getting and that that's exactly what they wanted and how they sold it to him (A weekly long form of WOMM); whereas TA thought they were getting WOMM but with a rejuvenated Rhyner who would be bringing it like he did during THL's Halcyon Days. Well, that ain't Rhyner no more. Hasn't been since his Petty Theft came into being. That is, hasn't been since there was no longer anyone locally to fly a stiff middle finger at and say "Now whaddya got to say? Nothing! That's right, mf'er, nothing. We (see: I) did it and ya'll said we couldn't. And now we wipe the fing floor with you every fing book, so suck it." Once he/The Ticket hit its acme and stomped a mudhole in everyone else, Rhyner's interest began to wane, hence PT, the hard turn toward music, "hanj" humor, and pretty much anything other than actually following sports and talking about them in a serious and interesting way. Of course the whole Hee Hoo thing played a role. But nothing compared to no longer having a challenge, no longer being the underdog who'll "show 'em all," and no longer being the edgy outsider. The more successful The Ticket became, the less the bunker mentality held to form; the less the bunker mentality held to form, the more disinterested Rhyner became.

All of which is a overly wordy way of saying that Rhyner is gone and never coming back. That Rhyner was also a Rhyner in his mid 40s to early 50s. This Rhyner is 70, happy with life and living in his own skin. That Rhyner wasn't. So, TA thought they were taking a ride in Professor Peabody's Wayback Machine. That Rhyner doesn't exist. This Rhyner, and it's obvious, is very glad that he doesn't.

Yeah, while the doc is 3-5 years too late to really make a splash, the TA pod is more like 13-15 years too late.

I hope Rhynes finds a nice home for his pod and can do what he wants for years to come. Will I be listening? I'll check in from time to time, for sure. Every once in a while greatness might rear its beautiful head.

  11. Cant TC and Jake give Rhynes a podcast home on their Blowout Podcast Network?

  12. Maybe Rhyner is looking for something a little more professional than Jake and TC.

  13. Pete posted the October ratings on reddit. Bad news for those who were predicting Ticket failure. The Hardline and Musers were #1, by a mile, and the station dominated all day long. I guess if you go woke, you don't go broke. Really good to see.

The joke is on you as by definition Jake and TC are professionals pulling in more than 4500 dollars per month for one 50 minute podcast a week of premium content.

They are pulling in about 1125 dollars/hour of podcast content. Not bad.
