A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."
I look at some of the gibberish that gets posted here, and I'm thinking -- Plainsstud, you are just not hip enough to understand all this gibberish. But somebody probably does, I'm thinking, and sometimes it provokes replies that seem to have been able to translate the gibberish.
I still think that. But I'm going to start deleting it.
Well, as we all know, Gordo's don't grow on trees. Who are you going to get to fill in for him on short notice? Especially if he called in to Cat this morning and said he couldn't go. Not like there are tons of folks waiting in the wings at 5AM hoping for that call. There have been many times that a muser was out last minute and the other two run the show. Don't act like this is some new thing.
He was sick yesterday. And there is an entire roster of JVers who would jump at the chance to fill in. Unfortunately nothing has been done to develop them to be prepared to fill in on short notice.
Gordo was there yesterday though? He very well could have said I will sleep this off and be fine tomorrow. We have no idea, so unless you know for a fact that he called Cat yesterday and said I am not coming in tomorrow, the whole post is pointless.
Gipper’s comment is the quintessential bitching for bitchings sake. How exactly do you “prepare people to fill in on short notice” ? Like do dry runs of calling Welpton or Monty at 4am, have them rush to the station only to tell them Gordon IS there, we were just preparing you to fill in. C
I don't think it's that easy to find a sub host on short notice, especially for the first show of the day. Most of the part-timers ("JV") have regular day jobs so it's not like they can just drop whatever they're doing and come in whenever needed
Just checked out the reddit post. Mildly significant developments, don't you think? Ticket no longer #1, Musers in a tie for #1 (when's the last time they weren't a clear cut dominator?) Invasion drops to #6. Sweet Spot drops to #8. Hardline holds steady at #1, though with a 23% drop.
Yes it's just one book and we've seen aberrations plenty of times in the past. But to not say it's at least mildly significant would be pom-poms-outta-my-eye levels of cheerleading.
September will only really be "significant" if it proves to be the start of a longer tailed trend.
As I noted in the post as an example, Ticket middays (Invasion, Sweet Spot) in August of '24 were 5th and 11th respectively, but by January of '25 both were #1.
The other thing to note, is cumlatively thru September, The Ticket is #1 overall 6+, A25-54 and M25-54. Each of the four dayparts outperform their opposite show on The Fan. So, those who elect to see this month as some sort of demarcation line of failure, should not be surprised if/when the station regains itself in short order.
Both sports stations had been on 3 month uptrends, and both had crap Septembers. KLNO was the big winner, and if this proves to be trend and not a one-off, that would tell me the Panel has gone thru some sort of significant change.
Mommy Ticket is still perfect and can do no wrong. She just had a bad couple of days is all. She still loves her little guys that defend her no matter what.
You may have noticed that one of the things that went away when the Musers shortened their hours was phone calls on Cowboy Monday. George declares the winner on the Cowboy Special Edition of the Musers Podcast that he does with Bob.
Yesh nan, that really sucks. What a legend. Looks like Cumulus isn't the only asshole entity. Evidently iHeart is laying off damn near everyone. AI on-air "talent" and "support staff" incoming--Including talk radio. BTW, This is also coming to local and network tv newscasts.
There is some chatter in the business boards saying there may be a format change coming there. To what, who knows. Bo is also hinting at a counter program of some sorts, an interactive podcast maybe. This might get spicy.
You mean like Rhyner's many failed pods or the KZEW internet station that may or may not still exist but if it does it's as if it doesn't? Used to love me some Bo back in the 80s, but that dude lost his fastball damn near 35 years ago. Shoulda hung it up with Jim back around 6 years ago. In truth, he and Jim shoulda left the building circa '08. Been a real tough listen for a long while now.
If the Ticket ratings continue to sustain a drop in upcoming months, does that mean TW will drop their bonus on annuities form 30% down to 20%? Hurry while you can still get that 30% up front return.
CdS sucks. Only reason it's slightly better than TDZ is that their personal car crashes are put on display, live, for everyone to see. Whereas TDZ obfuscates them.
Ticket Reddit loves Monty. I really like him too. And I do think he's better than multiple full time hosts on the station right now. He's smart on sports, especially basketball, and he's funny.
This question is for some of your radio insiders. Do you think his disability plays a role in his failure to be named full time host? Wondering about his abilitity to attend remotes and various functions. It's obviously more difficult for him, but not really sure how much. How much money is that to a station? Remotes and such. And do you think it played a role in his continued JV status?
Would I rather listen to Monto 2-3 hours a day, 5 days per week, 52 weeks per year, year after year, rather than, say, Sean or Mino or Matt or Donnie? Yes. But that wasn't the question.
I don't think his handicapability plays any role whatsoever in why he's not a FT host. His availability might. As we all know, Monto battles some serious health issues. For a long time now, due to these issues, it seems like his availability has been spotty. I've no idea, but I could see a scenario where both he and management decided it best to get to a stabilized one hundo or close to it before talking big picture/making long term commitments.
Then there's this: While it seems like nearly everyone on Ticket reddit and a majority here find Sean, Mino, and Matt to be unworthy of their hosting positions, all three were longtime Cumulus FT employees. Monty has always been PT. And if memory serves, he was a FT employee at his family's food business for many years, with The Ticket as a side gig. Like it or not, when companies (of any sort) promote from within, employee status, time on the job, real or perceived loyalty, etc., play a large role in deciding who gets promoted/given a chance. So while Monto might be better than some of the current FT hosts, it could be a case of it just isn't his turn yet; others were ahead of him. And hopefully, next time an opening pops up, he'll be at the head of the line. To head it off at the pass. Matt was a FT host for the cumulus sports talker in Birmingham, AL for a handful of years. He was in "the system" and a known commodity. It's like any profession: once you make it past the final gatekeeper, you're in the club and henceforth are in the running for all positions.
Whatever it is, here's to Monto being a FT host sooner rather than later.
All true but remember Davey was never a full time host when he got hired as a drive time host. I believe he had to play hardball though. I think he was offered Danny’s producer job and he said no, he wanted to be a full host, or nothing. But he had the leverage of having a decent career outside of the ticket.
I think Davey's hire was due in part to Corby's influence (like him or not, his say carries weight) and in part to THL 5.0 in its nascent stage desperately needing a Hail Mary. Imo 3.0 was awkward to say the least. It needed comic relief while still remaining sportsy. It needed a happy medium/bridge between a then starkly different Bob and Corby. Davey fills that bill in this particular case better than Monty, and for a few reasons. 1. He, like Corby and Bob, is Gen X -- now the largest HL demo. 2. His history with TT, The Rant, etc. 3. See 1. Davey is a legend for most in that demo. And finally, 4. he's a seamless fit with Corby and also happens to be genuinely sportsy. Bonus: The Rant Revival--again, see 1. It made too much sense. It worked. Now, on large part Davey's influence, Bob has loosened up even more than he ever did with Dan. I think Monty would've done a great job, I don't think he would've been the ideal fit.
Good afternoon.

Doesn’t the station always dip when the NFL starts because of The Fan being the Cowboys flagship? Or am I mistaken?
