Will The Ticket Report . . .

.  .  .  on the passing on one of the greatest and most colorful sportsmen -- I'd call him an athlete -- of our time?

  1. I couldn't read your linked article, because paywall.
Gotta confess: I have never heard of this guy.

  2. James,

If you are not familiar with the history of NASCAR you may not know him. Junior Johnson was also mentioned in the song "Cadillac Ranch" written by Bruce Springsteen.

Junior Johnson was a big deal.

Maybe The Ticket will bring Rich back for a segment.

  3. I rather doubt it. The Ticket does many things in the world of sports well, covering racing, of any form, is not one of them. TMS, COA in Austin, the drag strip in Ennis and boat racing in Waco and Marble Falls, all unknown to the Ticket.

  4. I've added a link in the article for those who have used up their free monthly New York Times clicks.

  5. The thing about Junior Johnson is, in addition to having a very cool sports name, is that Tom Wolfe made him an American icon in his Esquire article "The Last American Hero Is Junior Johnson. Yes!" in 1965, reprinted in his first best-selling collection of essays, The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby. That essay was later made into a movie starring Jeff Bridges with a best-selling theme song by Jim Croce.

He got his start outwitting and outrunning revenue agents attempting in vain to interdict the flow of untaxed moonshine. On the track, he invented slipstreaming. It was a fun life and he was successful living it.

Maybe he'll be on Mike's mind after Drydock.

  6. Mike R dropped in on the Cowboys pre-game today, featuring George as the +1. He didn't have a heckuva lot to say, but he seemed very exercised about the Cowboys. He never seems too interested in being the +1 on these weekend shows, so it was startling when they had him pull up a chair and put on the cans.

  7. Sorry, hockey partisans: After the most critical game of the year, if you ignore all the other most critical games of the year, turning on The Ticket and hearing hockey is unacceptable.

  8. Totally agree with The Plainsman on the hockey nonsense. The stations spends 80 percent of the sports segs on the Cowboys all season long and what do you get but ridiculous mid season hockey instead of the post game show. Rather than going to Facebook Live I went to the Fan. Are we sure being the flagship team of the Stars doesn't hurt ratings?

  9. I found it later on Facebook, but I don't recall any notice about this. I also listened to The Fan.

Both presentations seemed . . . tired. Like there was nothing more to say. Donovan and Jake are usually good, but today they could hardly wait for it to be over. The Fan show needed a shot of adrenaline; what it really needed was Jesse Holley.

The Fan post-game has never been as homerish as the weekday Fan presentations, but it was even more vitriolic today than were Donovan and Jake.

  10. I have emailed The Plainsman about how I don't listen to The Ticket that much anymore. Been listening to Sean and Jake this morning. They are doing a great show this morning.

  11. They had given a fair amount of heads up about the Facebook postgame. I saw 2200+ watching at one point

  12. 2200+ watching on FB Live? That is probably about 2000 more than listened to the hockey game.

  14. Merry Christmas, Plainsman and all Confessors.

  15. Beat me to it, 1037. I'm flattered (or sad) you'd be checking MTC as Santa time approached last night.

But to good Confessors like you, and those not so good, and even the odd non-Confessor, a very Merry Christmas.

  16. Hate to admit it but listening to the first string at the Fan while all the ticket is on perma-vacation has made me into a Fan P1. Their sports talk seems to be a cut above the Ticket and it just may be my proclivity during this very sports intensive part of the year with football reaching it's climax but the Fan especially G-Bag is excelling in very compelling sports discussion. They are absolutely hammering Jason Garret and the organization considering they are the flagship station. Their take down of the Cowboys has been more extensive than the Ticket whom have no affiliation. I for one am starting to think the ratings are somewhat real.
If I were Jake I would consider getting out while the getting is good. He would make a good addition to one of the primetime Fan shows. His high talent level is stagnating now at the Fan. He is approaching mid 30s and still hasn't got his chance.

  17. "His high talent level is stagnating now at the Fan".

Meant to say at the Ticket

    Sincerely,

  18. Lemme get this straight: Drydock has ostensibly been in effect for a week and in that ONE week you have become a TOLO? Wow, that's incredible.

  19. I think I might be alone on this island....but I DON’T enjoy the athlete interview in general. That being said I was out on the Norm-A-Thon (I do understand he and Donnie can’t talk for 26 hours straight and need help to fill that time). With some exceptions, I have enjoyed listening to the JV this time a year. If I was a Tier 1 host, I’d be real nervous about taking days off here and there (Cobby) and having Jake fill in for me. That guy has been bringing it! I’m guessing Cat has had meetings with Jake and told him hang in there. You’ll get your chance. Same with Sirois...love that dude too! Oh, it’s been great hearing Justin M. getting some airtime.

  20. That comment about becoming a Fan P1 looks like it was planted by Fan personnel. Most likely someone in Marketing.

  21. Disappointed Corby and Junior after a devastating OU loss is my favorite kind of both guys. Screw both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @7:25

Junior and Corby may go to OU games together, but Junior is nowhere near the OU jock sniffer that Corby is. By a mile. Compare the reactions to the LSU game. Corby immediately tweeted excuses for OU's loss. Junior didn't mention the game before or after.

  23. I have quite enjoyed a lot of the "dry dock" shows. Jake and Sean are a great team and really do well together. I even enjoy Country Force and WIP. Justin M. is a highly underrated talk show host and pretty funny as well. The Last Resort? Well, they try.

Sean Bass was saying "dry dock" was almost over and everyone would be happy to have the tier one guys back. It was almost like he was apologizing for people having to listen to him. Why? He's good! Jake is good! I'd take them both over the ultra phone in show "The Hardline". Corby can go pound sand.
