He has to be someone that Gordon or George, or hey, maybe even Craig, can mimic. I'm sure we'll continue to have visits from Garrett and Wade, but we need someone helming the Cowboys who possesses a distinctive timbre or manner of speaking or pet phrases.
Whatever we may think of Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett, they blessed the P1 with a decade-and-a-half of comedy gold at the hands of Gordon and George.

Parting Garrett shot: Everyone is careful to say what a nice guy he was before they dump on him. Some are even saying that they now feel sorry for him for having coached under Jerry's stifling conditions.
I'm not sure about that. I'd feel a lot better about him if I ever heard him take any responsibility for poor game management, spotty preparation, failure to hold players to account, and all manner of other managerial weaknesses.
As passive as the guy seems, my take is that he has an absolutely massive ego that demanded fealty to his primitive "processes" -- whatever they were -- despite the growing evidence that they were putting the Cowboys a decade behind the rest of the league. Stubbornness can be a virtue, until it ossifies into not knowing what else to do.
Ahh, whaddya expect from a Princeton guy?

Wishing all Confessors a happy and safe New Year. Thanks for coming along for the MTC ride in 2019.

Plains, you and others will think I'm crazy, but if I were Jerry, I would seriously look at Art Briles. Think about it...he's won everywhere he's ever coached; completely turned the once joke Baylor into a respected force. Yeah, he got caught in the, what has become a farce, #metoo bs.But Baylor being the "Christian" showcase it is, had to move on him. He's coaching high school now and winning, and the families of the kids love him. He got that likable southern disposition, and I think would mesh well with Jerry. He's always garnered respect from his players, and the icing on the cake...you'd get him for nothing. Jerry's going to overpay for some big name that will change NOTHING. Of course if it failed, Jerry would look like a bigger fool than ever! Wait!! What am I saying?! Jerry couldn't possibly look like a bigger fool than he already does!

but yes, let's call this a #metoo "farce"
"Sure, Hitler got caught in the #holocaust farce bs, but he sure turned Germany into a respected force."
ReplyDeleteAll right, I'm going to leave these three comments up out of respect and affection for three loyal commenters on this site, but I'm declaring a moratorium on Art Briles commentary and Hitler comparisons. Let's move on.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I should have added, "and I'm going to delete posts that ignore the moratorium."
ReplyDeleteBottom.

ReplyDeleteDear Plainsman - your comments on Garrett's weakness are very well articulated. I think he 20 plus years behind the times in terms of basic concepts and schemes. His motto is the Dallas Football Cowboys should be able to out physical every opponent. That isn't how football works in a league of talent parity.
ReplyDeleteBreathe, Epstein, breathe.
ReplyDeleteIn the into to this episode of Rangers on Deck Sean Bass talks a little bit about the changing state of radio and podcasts etc.

So they buried the Garrett news during the playoffs on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that the Cowboys interviewed (if reports are correct) Marvin Lewis and Mike McCarthy. Neither is currently employed in a significant role with any team at any level. (Lewis is a "consultant" at Arizona State; McCarthy "sat out" 2019 although sacked in mid 2018.) No info on whether Lewis was a "Rooney Rule" interview.
Doesn't matter. These guys' names are not lighting up personnel meetings anywhere in the league.
Here's my unsupported suggestion: Jerry perceives that guys that are not employed, and not desirable hires, will allow him to condition their hire on his continued meddling.
Marv Lewis is indeed a person of color
ReplyDeleteKind-of surprised Jerry's going with Mike McCarthy.
ReplyDeleteThe way I picture last week was Jason Garrett showing up all last week and Jerry not really telling him that he gone, just a lot of Jerry double speak. Late in the week Jerry interviews, then starts negotiating with McCarthy. Someone on Sunday says "Oh crap, maybe we should put something official out before we have two head coaches on Monday".
The thing we all care about the most is: what will Fake Mike McCarthy sound like?
ReplyDeleteBreaking news! Rhyner is done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ew3-jdTeS4
ReplyDeleteHOLY CRAP!! Rhyner gone!
ReplyDeleteTell me it’s not gonna be the Corby and Danny Show from now on.
ReplyDeleteBefore this came down, I heard an All-Pro spot with all the hosts and Jake got a spoken line (instead of Rhyner I think). It made me kinda say hmmm at the time. This leads me to believe Jake will be Hardliner.
ReplyDeleteSad news. Mike will be sorely missed. If Jake is in full time I'm out. He's terrible.

ReplyDeleteAccording to DMN he didn't tell The Cat Man or Corby. Only told Dan Bennett. Weird.
ReplyDeleteCat better come up with something compelling to fill 3-7 or I am out.
ReplyDeleteJake will be a great addition to the hardline.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Jake will be first in line. Corby said it would be him and Danny with Jake coming on the show often.
ReplyDeleteFantastic sign-off video by Rhyner. That took some planning and preparation.
ReplyDeleteStay hard and keep jamming Mike! You will be missed and thank you for entertaining us so much over the years.
ReplyDeleteThere's a new post up. Feel free to repeat your comments there.
