BREAKING: Mike Rhyner Leaves The Ticket

Not exactly breaking; I'm among the last to know.

The first of a couple of handfuls of shoes to fall.

Classy way to do this, and a nice presentation:

Lots to say about this.  But thought you'd like a nice fresh thread to get started.

Sounds like this has been in the works for awhile.

My first thought is that something prompted this other than the passage of time.  Could it be the apparent -- even if possibly illusory -- shift in the ratings?  And he doesn't feel like going through some adjustment in procedures and presentation that this might require.  No reason to think that, but what I thought when I saw his presentation was -- he looks tired.

My second thought is that with the cornerstone taking a walk, those whose who have been committed to The Ticket monolith because it was a monolith might feel less sentimental about entertaining other employment now that the face of the station is stepping away -- Bob and Dan coming to mind.

Anyway, let's hear from the Confessor.

My Ticket Confession thanks Mike Rhyner for his service, and wishes him a long life, good health, and as much happiness as he's given for the past two dozen years.

Jason Garrett's available.

  1. Wouldn't want to be Cat man today. Have to think he's run this scenario through his head a thousand times though.

The implications of a reworked Hardline on the future of BaD will be fascinating.

  2. I wouldn't spend too much time looking for reasons beyond the reason he gave.

  3. Will be interesting to see how the future ratings fall. Confessors have not been too positive on Corby for awhile. The only reason I kept listening was because of TOGW and even then I'd tune out if a segment got Corbytized.

  4. 458, I understand, but something flipped that switch. Something. I think he saw the landscape changing, and he had been viewing it from the top of the peak for a long time.

  5. I don't think too much should be read into Mike Rhyner's decision to step down at this time. I think the story is in the genius of his 'Irish Goodbye'.

Regardless, I will miss him terribly. It's the end of an era. There will never be another person like him. He is one of the very best that talk radio had to offer.

    Until we meet again, Mike...tangent

  6. Well this is not a good day. Jerry Jones hires another boring ass coach that will do nothing, and the ONLY reason I occasionally listened to Hardline is done. I absolutely cannot stomach Corby.

  7. Omg, I just found this out! Please, everyone, stop listening to this charade of THL, and get Corby thrown off the air! I just watched Mike's video and nearly cried. No more Keep Jammin. I guarantee you Rhyner was sick of Corby!

  8. This will be a tough show to re-work. The two logical JV players to call up to the varsity are Jake Kemp and Mike Sirois. If you were to ask me who would be the absolute worse to pair with Corby and Danny, I would say either Jake Kemp or Mike Sirois. All 4 of those guys need a governor on their on-air presentation. Mike was Corby and Danny's.

I'd seriously consider a 3-man show with Donny, Corby and Jake.

  9. It seems to me unlikely that they would pair Jake with Corby. Even though Corby isn't as young as he presents, the two of them would be too much birds of a feather. Sirois somewhat the same issue. I wouldn't worry too much about a Corby-Sirois pairing, but Sirois and Danny -- could be some sparks.

Guessing: It will be Corby and Danny for quite some time. They will not rush to fill this position. They'll see what happens to the ratings, such as they are. Maybe they'll move Mino to producer, just to add that additional voice, and find a new board guy.

  10. Hey guys..... It's seabass' time to shine. Am I right boys?

  11. My prediction: They move BAD Radio to afternoon drive.

Also my prediction: the Eagles, Saints, Patriots, and Bills to win this past weekend. So don't stake your farm on my predictions.

  12. My prayer: They won't even consider bringing Ben and Skin back.

  13. I listened to Ben & Skin's podcast today as they heard the Mike news. Pretty clear that is not an option as they have another gig lined up in market and will announce in a couple of weeks.

  14. I worry that Mike leaving breaks the levee. Any chance the Musers or Norm are still on the air in 2025?

  15. As much as I love Mike it was time for him to go. He had clearly lost interest. I would be fine with a Corby/Danny with Mino producing combo. But my ultimate dream is Corby/Dave with Danny producing. Please, please, please bring back Dave Lane! He’s funny as hell and can talk sport just fine.

  16. I would be fine with a Dave/Danny show. I too have always enjoyed Davey. Was never really sure why he was edged out.

  17. I hope they move the Muser's to the 3-7 slot and Bob and Dan to the 5:30-10:00. Put Mike Sirois and Norm 10-12 and Donny and Jake 12-3. Highly unlikely but this is what would keep my dial on the Ticket.

  18. I'm sad to see Mike go. He has been a part of my radio listening life for the vast majority of it. I grew up on the Zoo. My high school friends and I would sit in the car in the parking lot and listen to LaBella and Rody until the second bell forced us to class. I wasn't a day 1 P1 I didn't start listening to the Ticket until my father passed in 1999. I worked with my dad and after he passed I ended up doing his job, sitting at his desk with his AM radio to keep me company. I couldn't stomach my dads prefered combo of KLIF and KRLD so I found the Ticket. Mike's voice that I'd heard for years was, despite the nature of the Ticket in general, was a comforting factor during a difficult time. It is strange to think I won't be hearing Mike on the radio on a regular basis.

  19. Rhyner has clearly been done for awhile now. He'd interject here and there, but usually just get made fun of or talked over by Corby. I do not think a show with Danny and Corby is really what drive time listeners want to hear. They think they're too hip and they are definitely too acerbic for most (Balis especially).

If it were me, I'd move BaD radio to drive time and put some sort of Corby/Donovan/Jake show in the noon to three slot (though Bob and Dan seem to really like their time slot). Keep Sirois with Norm (who, let's face it, is going to die on the air, he's never going to retire). The Musers should stay where they are. They like their time slot and their ratings and popularity pretty much prop up the station.

Whatever happens, it should be interesting.

  20. I'd love Dave Lane, but I don't know that a Rant/Orphanage presentation has a lot of staying power. It could grow old quick. To me the person that balances out Corby the best is Donnie Doo. Donnie is way under utilized in the Norm time slot. If the Hardline becomes the Corby and Danny show then I am so out!

  21. Preferably they fire Corby. He can pound sand. I hate him so much. I can barely stand hearing his voice.

  22. Sad news, but I stopped listening to the Hardline a few years ago when it was clear that Rhyner had checked out. It had become the Corby and Danny show, and I can't stand either of them. I would think that moving BaD Radio to 3-7 would make sense.

  23. Corby and Danny can be fine, Danny has grown on me over the years.

However, they need to be anchored to an adult. Otherwise, they just start spouting off nonsense and they end up sounding like the radio version of a Deadspin article. That may be fine for a very narrow audience and clickbait, but you can’t expect anyone to tune in over time to that.

  24. I haven't listened to the Ben and Skin podcast but it would make an awful lot of sense for this to be their return to the airwaves. They've really amped up their interaction with Ticket guys on the social media recently. A buddy and me had a wild idea:

    - Norm rides off into the sunset with Mike (or he's pushed, either way IDC)
    - Donny is moved to the Hardline and I think would pair pretty well with Corbs and Danny (as much as I love Jake, I think that trio would make an awful show)
    - Ben and Skin slide into the NaD slot

Thoughts?? Am I way off? Either way, stay hard and keep jamming Mike! You will be missed and thank you for the years and years of entertainment.

  25. Sad to see Mike go. I hope he has a long, happy life in retirement.

  26. I actually like Danny and can relate to a lot of things he talks about. I just cannot tolerate Corby, especially for any extended listening. He probably has the most passion of any host up there, but if you don't like his subject matter, what good is he?!
