I think that last post set a record for responses, about 120.
We can keep up the speculation on who will replace Mike. My money's still on Jake, but I'd be OK with Mike Sirois or Dave Lane. Or Bob, although I discount pretty much all info from persons claiming to have inside information other than me. One reason I don't have much confidence in any of my predictions is that I don't know what the competition sounds like. I don't really tune into G-Bag, so I don't know what, if anything, the demographic likes about it that they're not finding in The Ticket. I have to believe that Cat is going to have this in mind as much as just how the various candidates sound with Corby.
But I want to turn now to another topic, and that is what Mike is going to do with himself.
I need to find some time to listen to the Ben & Skin interview. I gather from comments we've seen to date is that some Confessors are getting the impression that he may be waiting out his noncompete and will hit the airwaves elsewhere again. They note that the word "retirement" has not been used.
A couple of thoughts on that possibility -- not that I have any information that that's what's going through Mike's Mind:
(1) If he does land elsewhere, then we'll know that the "I just had that feeling, I knew in my bones, it was just time to go" was not entirely true, was not even mostly true -- he had some problems with what management was saying to him.
(2) If he does land elsewhere, how will we all feel about that elegaic speech and the looooooong hallway walk and opening and closing doors and whatnot?
(3) But here's the main thing: Recall that the feeling was pretty much unanimous that Mike was not, shall we say, fully engaged in The Hardline. Love the guy, truly do, given me hours of pleasure, but recent years . . . . Not a lot of prep, and voluntary surrender to Corby's enthusiastic monopolization of the mic. In other words, he wasn't keeping his game sharp.
So what if he pops up on another show, and whaddya know, we hear a fully-engaged and participatory Mike? How will we feel about all that affection he reported that he has for the station and the people there? If we don't hear a fully-engaged Mike, then why try the act elsewhere? If we don't hear that, then how would he expect to be a success?
That all sounds pretty snarky, I know, but here's where I come out on this: Because I don't think Mike is that kind of guy, a guy who will give his best elsewhere when he wasn't inclined to give it to Cumulus/Ticket/Hardline. I don't think Mike will go to another station, or another show, or another medium, only to cast off his Hardline torpor and be a star again. If he is willing to work hard now, why would he have been unwilling to do so for the home team? My answer is: When he left The Ticket, even though he may not have used the word "retirement," he was intending to convey a truthful impression that he was done with sports/guy-talk radio. My answer is that he is a man of integrity, and that he won't be returning to radio full-time on a daily talk show. I expect to hear him on one-offs, and on interviews, and maybe even as a guest commentator from time to time, but nothing much more than that.
Thanks for everything, Mike.
Maybe a podcast. I don't think he's interested in returning to the daily grind.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Plainsman's final analysis and with 354. Mike's a solid human being. There might be more to "feeling it in my bones" than expressed, but that's something we'll find out further down the road, perhaps.
ReplyDeleteWhat the final commenter on the previous thread said is absolutely true. Dingu doesn't want to be a host and is happy with his current situation. While Plainsman is wise to be wary of most insider claims, what I sat about Dingu is legit. Related, I do believe Plainsman's insider info comes from Cat. Great source, but it is skewed heavily toward whatever narrative The Ticket wants to convey.
I am starting to think none of the plus ones are getting the job. If it was Jake, what's the hold up? There's nothing EOE or anything else along those lines that would prevent Cumulus and Cat from making the move. Either they have no solution yet or they're waiting for or negotiating with someone outside the station proper.
429: You're right about there being nothing in the law or regulations that would prevent them turning the job over to Jake. But consider the politics of that -- Jake is junior to Sirois, and Dave Lane is a popular figure among current Ticket guys. Some of this is undoubtedly optics -- making sure not only that everyone gets a fair shot, but that it gives the appearance of same.
ReplyDeleteAs to my sources for the (very rare) scoop or industry info, they are, shall we say, varied. I try to stick with the ones who sound like they know what they're talking about, or that have the ring of truth.
You should make time to listen to the podcast. Mike talks about Howard Stern's influence on his life and B&S got into what Howard Stern has turned into and you can tell Mike was really engaged with that. Mike and Greggo measuring boobs was Stern having girls ride sybians. I think Mike wants to do more meaningful work, just like Howard is doing now.
ReplyDeleteJake's been at The Ticket much longer than Sirois. He might be younger but he's not his junior in time served. Gen X Dave is popular with his Ticket buds. I can't imagine anyone on air or behind the scenes at the station that honestly thinks GXD is a viable option for the position. No matter how much they like him. I'd bet GXD himself would agree.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 5:12 may be on to something here. If B&S end up at say...the Eagle would Mike be opposed to dropping in from time to time to give a state of Dallas hour? Local news and events, music, sports, whatever.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see Mike and Jon Rody back together doing some kind of music program. Hell, Mike at KXT one day a week would be a hoot.
Personally, I hope he just kicks back and chills for a bit. Trust me, there is nothing like the feeling of turning in the ID badge and company keys and walking out the door for the last time. That 800-pound go-rilla jumping off your back is liberating. He has enough of a social media presence if he needs that interaction, Facebook and Twitter are a keystroke away. It works for David Gold and Kevin McCarthy.
Doesn't everyone just go to The Athletic these days?
ReplyDeleteTo listen to people speak? What are you talking about, dude? Especially because people are reading less than ever and very few if any-in reality - of the online sports sites break even much less turn a profit.
ReplyDeleteI've given up trying to figure who will be the the plus one on the pseudo "The Hardline" and what the future holds for Mike Rhyner. I guess we'll just have to see how it plays out. As to Balis not wanting to be a co-host, I can totally see that. He's much happier commenting when he wants to, making sarcastic (and funny) quips, and looking down his nose at everything.
ReplyDeleteFact is, I've kind of quit listening to drive time sports stations. I listen to music instead. If I'm lucky enough to catch some of "BaD Radio" while driving around, great. The NaD Invasion is not essential listening, either. No, I listen to The Musers in the morning when working out (and usually don't even finish their show) and it's on to other things.
Euro, I'm pretty much right there with you. The only show I try to listen to daily, work permitting, is BaD. And even then I only care to listen to the sports segments. The rest of the shows have mostly become unlistenable, including The Musers. Audible, KNTU, WRR, KRLD am, and check this out...silence, fill the spaces throughout the day that The Ticket once did. I do miss that Ticket. But that Ticket hasn't existed for years.
ReplyDeleteIs drive time still a thing in the radio industry? There are just so many options now to listen on your way home.
ReplyDeleteEverything is possible.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is still a "thing."
ReplyDeleteWhoa. So Anonymous! Haven't seen you in these comboxes for a couple of years. Cryptic as ever. If memory serves, you dropped a few insiderish nuggets on us front time to time. "Everything is possible," huh? Meaning no decision has been made? Because that's what I think. I think Cat was blindsided by this, but because it was Mike, was put into a position to where he had to laud and celebrate the so called retirement and at the same time was sent scrambling to figure out the next and ever so important move. A move that, if mishandled, can have irrevocable, negative impact on the station and his own career. A hasty decision wouldn't be in his best interest. And despite what many say, Jake isn't a no brainer.
ReplyDeleteI just saw that the Rangers and the Fan have extended the radio broadcast contract. And I heard a voice saying "go the distance."
ReplyDeleteCould Mike Rhyner become part of the Rangers radio broadcast team?
I think the decision has been made. I don't know what it is, but I think it's set. The +1 tryouts may be for future slots. But my gut feeling -- no, Cat hasn't fed me a thing -- is that the CTO knows exactly what it's going to do and has for awhile.
ReplyDeleteAs some here have speculated, I agree that we'll learn it right after Super Bowl Week.
I'd be surprised if Mike took on any kind of a regular color role or other broadcast position with the Rangers. When he put in his rare Cowboys pre-game appearance on The Ticket, he was mostly silent. Maybe he'd be more vocal about baseball, hard to say. But a regular broadcast role would be more of a grind than the 3-7 Ticket -- just doesn't sound like something he'd do. Maybe drop in from time to time, but not a regular gig.
Agree with Plainsman - I think Mike has mostly checked out. Its called retirement of a 70 year old financially stable man. Once you are out of the daily grind for a while there is not necessarily a drive to dive back in for most people. He can pick and choose if he wants to do some media appearances here or there otherwise I see him hanging around DFW a bit, doing the Petty theft gig, going to concerts and watching sporting events on TV. Heck he could even be a guest at Campound or things like that.
ReplyDeleteI can see him setting in the booth with Nadel and Hicks for an inning on Opening Day. Kind of a bookend to him being tapped by the Rangers to be the voice of the commercial that bid adieu to The Temple and asked us to look forward to the new park. Other than that, no way.

ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by 'that Ticket'?

ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by 'that Ticket'?
Donnie, Sirois, and Jake all have +1'd three times now. Corby and Danny can hold their own as a duo just fine for any holdover period. Yet that's not what has gone down. If the CTO already knew the direction THL would take but wanted to for whatever reason wait until either Superbowl week or the week after to make the move, why wouldn't they have either mostly +1'd the new host or just let C & D run out the clock if they didn't want to tip their hand? Instead they've +1'd three guys three times each. The idea that the CTO had a plan in place seems implausible to me. If the three +1's are indeed trying out and the CTO will make its decision over the Superbowl week, OK, that I can buy stock in.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hearing Mike in the 5 pm hour.
All ya all have to the weigh the possibility that you either have good ole day syndrome and/or are just getting burned out on a multi-decade run of guy/sports talk radio. If you go back and listen to old shows they aint that great. You have the cumulative memory of all the good times and your minds wash away stupid stuff or things that didn't resonate that well at the time. Perhaps the Ticket really is just as good as ever but we are all starting to tire on it and or have the good ole day syndrome I referenced at the beginning of this note. We tend to collectively act like every segment 15 years ago was Marconin winning gold. NOT!!!
ReplyDeleteBewm. Thanks Wolf. Thanks for your sound in my ears tonight.
ReplyDeleteHave good, get give.
Let me guess, 426. Only the here and now matters. All memories are pretty much fraudulant figments of our psychological makeup designed to protect us from the hurtful or harmful or hateful truth--either perpetrated by or against us. And when we listen to Rotten Radio and laugh, we're not enjoying the content because it's actually good. No. It's merely our psycho-cogno defense mechanism kicking in, saving ourselves from reality, preserving the self-created Matrix we inhabit. Cool. Got it.
ReplyDeleteYa 625 you nailed it. No chance of good ole day syndrome after all Rotten Radio isn't carefully curated "best of" content or anything. I said "the possibility" of good ole day syndrome and "perhaps" as hand selected modifiers. You chose to conjure up a Straw Man "all memories are fraudulent argument. No not all memories are fraudulent but human memory is very much malleable and subject to revisionist tendencies. Listen to the Malcolm Gladwell podcast on this topic for more info on the fallible human memory. Yes the Ticket was great but perhaps we remember it even more fondly the farther back we look.

ReplyDeleteDid I miss an announcement about THL? Wasn't able to hear the entire show. Also missed the first part of Mike's visit, dammit. I ask because at the close of the show Corby thanked Donnie for sitting in the past few weeks and then said we'll see you all Monday with Jake. And Danny said something to the effect that he guesses they'll keep The Reconsider Lounge in honor of Mike.
ReplyDeleteDid I miss something?
About the only thing that came from that was Corby asking Mike if he'd like to do a once a week baseball show.
ReplyDeleteOK. Thanks for the recap. Like I said, Corby's sign off in conjunction with Danny's comment about The Reconsider Lounge made me think something had been announced.
ReplyDeleteDoes feel as if one is coming real soon. Maybe Monday?
Yo to @6:25. Well said.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to respond Anon 7:12
ReplyDeleteFirst: MG has acknowledged in multiple interviews of late that he regrets ever publishing the 10000 hour rule primarily because people usually misinterpret what he tried to describe. He didn't say that practicing 10000 hours would turn you into the beatles but instead was trying to say that to reach technical proficiency (to the best of your individual potential) it takes roughly 10000 hours of meaningful practice at whatever discipline is in question. It was more about reaching an individualized potential than achieving preeminence in a given field.
Second: Gladwell is good at making observations of the world not doing original research. He doesn't claim to be a research scientist but instead he communicates ideas such as serendipity being a key component of success. Example from Outliers was a good one about the time period that both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were born and also Gates had one in a million (at the time) access to computers at his private high school. The Serendipity FACT doesn't mean that mega successful people aren't uniquely talented (they are) but instead they are the beneficiaries of a serendipitous confluence of ability, drive, era they were born into, and place where they were born to name a few factors. I have found that many anti-Gladwellians tend to be the type of individual who credits nobody for any of their successes and believe luck plays no role as if being born in the USA in the late 20th century makes you inherently one of the luckiest people ever to live on planet earth.
My prediction: Donovan to the Hardline and Jake to 10 to 12 with Norm and Mike Sirois. Norm likely to go soon and the Ticket will play around with the Jake and Baked show featuring Jake + Mike Sirois. The two together are pretty entertaining.

ReplyDeleteA done deal! It's Jake as a full time host.
ReplyDeleteCheck out TheTicket.com Super Bowl picture. Rhynes gone and Jake is firmly with the Tier 1 hosts in the picture. No Mike Sirois, no anybody else except Jake added prominently to the picture.
Get ready for a major surprise NEXT Monday. My sources tell me a certain Muser is tired of waking up at 4:30 a.m. five days/week and he will move to afternoon drive. Jake will be taking his spot in this major shift in station programming. Sad news . . .
ReplyDeleteYes, sad news indeed. I have my guess as to who that might be - Craig, what with his new marital arrangement and all. I don't watch Fox much, but is Natalie Solis typically on the afternoon/evening news when she has a story? Maybe they are aligning their schedules.
ReplyDeleteBut I agree - the Musers was the main show I listened to. I will give any change a chance, but I will be shedding a tear.
