Justin Montemayor and David Newbury

are knocking it out of the park on the Cowboys pre-pre-before-ante-early pregame.  Some of the best Cowboys and general Niffle commentary I've heard in a long time.  Just the little segment on how the Cowboys use, or fail to use, Dez Bryant -- very insightful.

Other stations step up with their Cowboys game-day coverage, but I prefer The Ticket's.

Stay Cowboys-hungry, my friends.

  1. Agreed. I missed why it is that Bob, who retired from pre, is on the first pre of the season? As I type this, The Bulldog's spot is airing. She seems confused: some ads she claims others call her a bulldog, but in this latest spot, she calls herself The Bulldog.

  2. I wondered that myself, and I think the answer is:

Remember when Bob was doing the pregame, they would always have one Ticket personality on the show as well. It would change from week to week. Bob is that guy on this show. Partly it creates a nice transition to Jake and Sean, and partly it's that Bob is the preeminent football analyst on the station, and it would make sense to have him on the opener.

  3. And, by the way, it's been a great Countdown to Kickoff so far. I know there are Confessors who don't like either Sean, or Jake, or both, but this site is not among them. I think they'll be a must-listen for Cowboys pregame this season.

I do have one question: What is a "three technique"? I might come up with some kind of a prize for someone who can give us a coherent answer.

  4. Great to hear Newbes's voice again. Next to Bob, he's my go to football man.

  6. On one of the pregame shows, they said Norm was "ailing" and wouldn't be on the postgame.

    Best wishes to him.

  7. I imagine a post-surgery Norm wasn't up for a Sunday late night into the wee hours post game followed by prepping for and then doing his own show just hours later. My guess, at least.

  8. Can't let today go by without mentioning the awesome job the Little Ticket did on 9/11 and the days following. So telling of the talent that their finest hour had nothing to do with sports.

  9. Who do you guys think will get the co-host spot with Monty and Shake Joint vacancy?

  10. I wonder if Monty even keeps the slot? Meaning, maybe a new show sans Month takes over....both Saturday and for TSJ on Sundays. Hope not. Monty's a good and shouldn't be punished because Machine moved on. But life isn't always fair, so who knows. If I had to pair him up with someone new, it'd be either TC or Mino.

  11. I don't think Justin is going to lose a weekend slot, although he may not stay in the Saturday ten-to-noon. I don't know which is the more desirable slot, that one or Sunday morning, although I do know that Shake Joint had very good ratings for a weekend show.

My choice for a Justin co-host might well be David Newbury. I don't know what he does for an actual living living, but I'll bet he'd be up for a regular weekend slot. What I don't know is if he's sportsy-savvy with respect to any sport other than football at its various levels.

I've got nothing against either T.C. or Mino, but I wouldn't think a pairing of either with Justin would be very compelling. There are some new ticker guys I've been liking, although none of their names come to mind.

So I dunno. Tough call for the New World Catman.

  12. For all the online criticism of Machine, I could really notice his absence on Saturday on Not a Podcast. His alpha voice was missing and consequently, the overall show didn't have much of a direction. No offense to Mino but he doesn't have the charisma or draw to be a host on NaP. If I were Cat, I would pair up Justin with Cirque and have that be a new three-man show at 10am, followed up by Country Force and then the Kickaround.

  13. Newbury does know at least some baseball. He has filled in on diamond talk in the past.

  14. You know, I wasn't going to bring this back up, but it needs to be pointed out. I just saw on the news that the special crane, that was needed to remove the Robert E Lee. monument, was involved in a fatal crash on it's trip up from Houston. So now we have a man losing his life, not to mention all the money wasted, the man hours needed to guard the statue for the last few weeks [our undermanned police force btw]...all to appease these BRAIN DEAD stupid idiots. I hope with the removal of these nasty ol monuments [ya know, the ones nobody gave a second thought to 3 months ago] wittle Corbsey-worbsey can sleep all nice, safe, and snuggums with those scary ol monuments down! Poor little guy...

  16. Slinky, respect your right to voice your political opinions, but know it's as wanted and appreciated about as much as corby and Danny's views during CQH. Yawn galore.

  17. Following up on some comments by others in one of the recent threads, I am one who is finding TC's increasing pop-ons increasingly annoying. Case in point: I think TC legitimately annoyed Bob yesterday during The 1:30 News and I completely understood Bob's frustration. Bob started to make a statement about the planned obsolescence of light bulbs and iPhone batteries and TC immediately jumped in to say "this is the worst opinion you have." The conversation went on from there with Bob eventually saying "I'm so sorry I exhaust you TC" and TC responding "your arguments are just so bad!" Bob then ended it with: "Mic' off, get ready for your Ticker . . . I'm just sayin' -- let us do our segment!"

Then at the end Jake declared "that was a bad segment" and Bob protested "no way, that was a fine segment, just a little discourse, an exchange of ideas." After the break they joked about it with Dan calling it "your large Apple argument of 2017." It was not the type of thing that will have a lingering effect but there were definitely some brief uncomfortable moments of tension and it was not a bit by Bob. It seems to happen more and more often lately, that TC will jump in to say something critical and one of the hosts will respond with what seems like genuine annoyance. Or that I will just find myself personally annoyed at his interjection even if nobody on the air reacts negatively.

I am a day one P1 of IJB so I have never been a TC hater and I still have no problem at all with his role at the station. I think he has clearly improved his Ticker performance and I generally enjoy his Tickers. It just does seem as though he has been given increased license or has just taken the initiative to jump into the hosts' conversations more frequently and I can understand why reaction of the good strong P1 is not always positive.

  18. Slinky, I have to agree with 247. You're a legacy Confessor so I left you up, but it was a near thing.

  19. Gotcha Plains. @ anon 2:47...my "opinions" are not so much political as much as they're just good old common sense; something that is getting farther and farther in the rear view mirror these days. Loved the Homer Call on BaD today. Funny stuff, but man, those local guys had to know they would end up on Homer Call.
