The Uncertain Journey of T.C. Fleming /// LATER -- BREAKING BREAKING -- The Woodwork Speaks!! [See Following First Redhead]

Confessor Colorado P1 posted the following on the last thread.  I'm sure others out there heard it as well, but I did not.  His report:

Following up on some comments by others in one of the recent threads, I am one who is finding TC's increasing pop-ons increasingly annoying. Case in point: I think TC legitimately annoyed Bob yesterday during The 1:30 News and I completely understood Bob's frustration. Bob started to make a statement about the planned obsolescence of light bulbs and iPhone batteries and TC immediately jumped in to say "this is the worst opinion you have." The conversation went on from there with Bob eventually saying "I'm so sorry I exhaust you TC" and TC responding "your arguments are just so bad!" Bob then ended it with: "Mic' off, get ready for your Ticker . . . I'm just sayin' -- let us do our segment!"

Then at the end Jake declared "that was a bad segment" and Bob protested "no way, that was a fine segment, just a little discourse, an exchange of ideas." After the break they joked about it with Dan calling it "your large Apple argument of 2017." It was not the type of thing that will have a lingering effect but there were definitely some brief uncomfortable moments of tension and it was not a bit by Bob. It seems to happen more and more often lately, that TC will jump in to say something critical and one of the hosts will respond with what seems like genuine annoyance. Or that I will just find myself personally annoyed at his interjection even if nobody on the air reacts negatively.

I am a day one P1 of IJB so I have never been a TC hater and I still have no problem at all with his role at the station. I think he has clearly improved his Ticker performance and I generally enjoy his Tickers. It just does seem as though he has been given increased license or has just taken the initiative to jump into the hosts' conversations more frequently and I can understand why reaction of the good strong P1 is not always positive.

==============

In the recent past I have noted that when I was able to catch BaD I thought T.C.'s popping on had perhaps been moderated (or crowded out by Machine's incessant and truly annoying p.o.), and I thought some of it was even useful to the conversation.

But I would have punched out if I'd heard that.

I think T.C. is at a crossroads at The Ticket and may be feeling some frustration.

Consider:

With the fadeout of Shake Joint and Machine's departure, there are several slots to fill on the weekend.  This only comes around once per total solar eclipse, so everyone's trying to read the tea leaves as to who will get these plums.  (Wow, three weak cliche-metaphors in less than two dozen words.  Time to hang it up.)

I am not a heavyweight T.C.-basher, and I have zero inside information, but I would be a little surprised if T.C. got any of those spaces.  In the past, T.C. has filled in a show here and there with one or another of his colleagues, and my recollection is that those shows were not at all bad, but his appearances in that role seem to have vanished.  I can't recall hearing him as a fill-in co-host, either with an established host or an ad hoc fill-in show with another JV, in a long time.  I'm guessing that Jeff Catlin's email melts down whenever T.C. gets extended air time.  In any event, he doesn't seem to be a current go-to for the odd slot here and there, so as a candidate for a weekend posting he's down-list.

I'm also guessing that maybe, just maybe, with the exception of Jake, his JV colleagues may not be anxious to share a show with him.  He would steamroll Justin M worse than Machine did.  As I've written in the past, every host and JV hopeful at The Ticket has ambition and a large ego.  T.C. is not unique in that regard.  His problem is that he is not good at disguising it.  He gives off a vibe that he believes he is the smartest guy in the room, but seems tone-deaf to the fact that (a) it's a very large room full of smart guys and hundreds of thousands of smart listeners, and (b) he's the only one  thinking that.  His treatment of superiors who disagree with him is inapt (see above), and peers -- forget it.

So -- wild guess -- I don't see The Ticket assembling a weekend show with T.C. as one of the co-hosts.

And I suspect he doesn't see it, either.  Makes him testy.

But I have a suggestion for the Man of the Cat, which I offer for my customarily modest commission:

Give T.C. his own weekend show with no co-host.

I would absolutely check that show out and give it some time to percolate.

Lots of advantages; the guy is like a Norm starter kit:

       (1)  It would make T.C. happy (if that's on Cat's to-do list).

       (2)  It would keep in place the general expectation that seniority will be rewarded by being given a chance to shine.

       (3)  The CTO only has to pay one guy and fill one slot.

       (4)  He will always be prepared with content.

       (5)  He will be contentious with callers.

       (6)  He will be free to let his ego-flag fly; his less attractive broadcast qualities will become advantages rather than irritants.

       (7)  The Ticket is assured of weekend controversy.

       (8)  He will have no co-host to whom unattractively to condescend or to bully.

       (9)  If it succeeds, you've got a new star; if it fails, the perpetually nagging matter of T.C.'s career path is finally resolved, and we can all move on.

       (10)  Appropriately scheduled, people will tune in just to catch the Craig Rosengarden/T.C. mixer (can you imagine the e-brake fodder that would explode out of that?).

You're welcome!

All right, all right, here's your redhead.

BREAKING BREAKING:  TICKET T.C. LOWDOWN

OK, Confessors, going out a bit on a limb here, so bear with me:

It is possible I'm getting scammed big time.  Please keep that warning in mind as you consider the following:

I almost never, ever hear from Ticket employees at any level.  I consider that a compliment to The Ticket -- employees are generally happy there and not trying to grind any axes on this site.  That speaks well of management.  (I know, I know, everyone thinks I kiss CTO ass, but think about it:  If you worked for a large organization (I do), and there was some guy out there doing a blog dedicated to your organization, and you were disgruntled, wouldn't you grunt, at least anonymously, to the keeper of that blog?  Sure.  My organization gets slammed from within all the time.)

But I may have touched a nerve with this column.  I've heard from multiple (claimed) sources via email.

Now let's keep in mind that there are readers who do not like T.C. Fleming one bit.  We hear from them frequently.  It could be they're pretending to be insiders and giving me crap.

But these communiques have the ring of authenticity.  Let's see if I can summarize fairly:

(1)  Current scuttlebutt is that T.C. is not presently agitating for a weekend gig.  If what Cat has told this site in the past -- that he listens to JV pitches when there's an opening -- is correct (some insiders have scoffed), it tends to suggest that T.C. will not be invited to co-helm (or, alas, solo helm) a weekend presentation.

(2) Perhaps the reason is this:  Your Plainsman's surmise that T.C. is not viewed as a desirable showgram co-host by his peers is correct.  (Make a note:  Correct Plainsman surmise.)   He is rather clear that he regards the other JV and most of the weekday hosts as deficient, compared to him, in broadcast skills and intellect, and have leapfrogged him for reasons unrelated to their on-air merit.  If pressed, he might concede a small advantage to Bob, Dan, and Gordon.  My correspondent was rather more colorful in his rejection of the notion that T.C. could pair with anyone.

Again, in fairness, we need to consider the potential axe-grinding factor here.  Do not want to be unfair to T.C., who has no opportunity to respond to things like this -- but this site would be delighted to hear from him and give him a forum for reply.

(3) Station is buzzing that management came down rather firmly on T.C. this week and advised him to cease his interruption of the hosts.  I don't know if this was before or after the episode Colorado P1 sketched out for us.  Again -- hearsay.

That's how I'd sum up what I've been told since this column appeared.  Take it for what it's worth.

And thank you for shopping at My Ticket Confession.

After all this, I think we need another redhead:

  2. If anyone wants to hear the referenced Bob vs TC Apple argument, it is on the Sports Day app, under "Dan and Bob - News, Sept 13th". It is at the 7:30 mark.

I think TC was way out of his lane on this one. His job is to support the hosts for the most part and interject with helpful insight. If he disagrees with a host, as long as there is civil debate, no issues. This was far from it. This guy goes right at Bob. Bob had every right to get pissed about it. Know your role TC.

  3. I agreed with TC on the topic but he was doing a terrible job of expressing it in a convincing manner. Bob was being dumb but TC being TC whiffed on the tackle.

And how come he still can't stick the landing at the end of Tickers? How hard is it to have your sponsor read staged and ready to go? His success rate is lower than Rougie's on base percentage.

  4. If TC's attitude towards the Varsity and JV is as been described to you, and if management has come down on him, then I'd imagine he's not long for the station.

  5. My guess is that T.C. can stay in his present position as long as he wants, as long as his pop-on eruptions only happen every once in awhile (and I'm sure we haven't heard the last of them). The station gave him a job after his Pensacola termination not so very long after he burned his bridges in leaving Dallas, and remember -- he's Bob and Dan's guy. That show seems to require an enormous amount of care and feeding, and T.C. has a long and distinguished history of providing it. Unless he gets very seriously sideways with the two of them for a significant period of time -- and I wouldn't view things like supercilious popping-on every once in awhile as representing that event -- they'll go to bat for him.

Now maybe T.C. will seek a position more consistent with the value of the skill set he believes himself to possess (I'm not being snarky here -- that's why anyone looks for a new job), but it takes a lot to get people fired at The Ticket. I don't think T.C. has done anything that threatens his tenure there.

  6. I dunno man...TC was still contributing plenty during the show yesterday.

  7. I agree with all but your last statement. Before you started listening, I saw a traffic person named Nikki Granville (or possibly Glanville) and a board op named Expo get canned simply because the hosts didn't like them. I mean, it was never said in so many words, but ....

    ReplyDelete
  8. Well, James, Expo didn't get canned, he quit due to burn out. Nikki was let go due to something akin, but not the same as, Logan B.

  9. Shaggy, thanks for the report.

This is consistent with my feeling that T.C. may be approaching a fork in the road, and his frustration is growing. He may just be pushing things to see if anything gives.

And, to be fair: Bob and Dan are very fond of T.C. Just as Mike R tolerates Corby's mic-hogging because he LIKES it, BaD also think highly of T.C. and, the occasional obnoxious outburst aside, like what he contributes.

    So there's that.

  11. Great update P-Man. I think this article really gets to the essence of why TC is so divisive. He very well might be one of the smartest guys on the station. But if you can't communicate effectively, then it's useless. I am an IJB P1 and generally like the guy. But the other side of TC - his juvenile jealousy he has for his peers that are doing better than him, his cockiness, his Kool-Aid Man-like ability to bust through any segment without any foresight - drives me mad.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Giving T.C. a solo weekend show would only add to his haughtiness as he would basically be the last person since Mark Elfenbein* to do so.

Let him just continue with his podcasting since the second IJB of he week is now pay-per-listen and a commercial enterprise.

And he was in Pensacola, not Tallahassee. Plus, the station which he went to did not change formats after his dismissal. It stayed as sports station and ESPN affiliate until it went out of business this past June.

*-I forget if "Ticket Sports Saturday" had more than one host.

  13. I guess I just don't get it. The hate for TC has always been astounding to me. I really like the guy and enjoy his pop on's for the most part. I heard the 1:30 news segment everyone is up in arms about and it didn't seem out of the ordinary. Everyone on the show has a part to play and often have opinions and takes they don't even necessarily believe that much. But it's part of the show and they run with it. Bob is the older, I don't trust new technology guy (even though he has more tweets than anyone I can think of) and TC is the young, go to guy for all things relevant in technology and current events guy. They played their parts accordingly and it made for entertaining radio.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is there any particular reason Corby and Danny were offended by a guy making a boob joke on CNN? That's kind of how they have made their living for the last 20 years or so.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just last week, Corby spent several minutes disparaging Tomi Laher's looks. Either it's wrong to objectify women (positively or negatively) or it isn't, regardless of a woman's political affiliation.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 412: Thanks for your comment. T.C. does have some fans. I've heard him when I thought he was good.

Like Machine, who also had some skills, he has likability problems for a large (and, if this site is any indication, vocal) segment of Ticket listeners. Some of it stems from his graceless departure for Pensacola and unrepentant return. Some from his sometimes gratuitous poppings-on. Some of it from his teacher's-pet status with BaD. Some from his overall broadcast manner.

But 412, I'm with you to this extent: The guy is just not prominent enough to provoke the level of hostility he seems to receive. And it seems like he's never going to be. So let him do what he does; if his behavior is sufficiently annoying to management or to Bob and Dan, he'll be gone. In the meantime, his Tickers are not at all bad and he occasionally has some useful information for the BaD segments, and sometimes they invite him to participate.

But when he ego-erupts, we will be there to observe and report. One of the cliches I live by is that "you'll get what you've always gotten," and I expect we'll continue to hear him boil over from time to time.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sorry, P-Man, but when TC was an employee/management at the Pensacola station in 2014, he returned to the Metroplex, went to the Final Four on a Ticket credential and collected material for his former employer.

There's audio of him talking to UConn players and in team locker rooms and he gave The Ticket the audio.

    That's unacceptable.

  18. maybe I don't know the whole pensacola story, but I always viewed it as, guy has opportunity to advance his career so he leaves, things don't work out, old job likes him so they take him back. no harm no foul.

  24. IIRC, Cat said in his AMA that T.C. didn't do anything wrong in his departure for Pensacola.

Not sure I agree, but that's his call.

  25. I've been switching between FAN, ESPN, and The Ticket on the post-game. I've heard FAN post-game that wasn't bad in the past, but I've been surprised at the mild reaction to this arse-thrashing on all of the channels. I'm getting what seems to me to be the most balanced view from Norm and Donnie, so I ended up parked there.

On the FAN, I think it was Ben Rogers who said "now I'm going to tell you what I think about this game" and went on to deliver an entirely vanilla and pointless disquisition on Trevor Siemian.

I switched to ESPN. Steve Dennis is not my favorite, but at least he had a steely-eyed view of what the Cowboys did, or didn't do, in the off-season to deal with their personnel losses. But Dennis is a tough listen.

So I'm back with Norm and Donnie but, I must say, I'm still surprised at the lack of concern about this staggeringly indifferent performance.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Norm and Donnie are the best post out of the bunch. But, like pm drive and THL, that ain't saying much. It's to the point in both the post and their daily shows, Donnie's most always (though not all of the time) agreeing with Norm in order not to sound sports silly (though Norm sounds sports silly more often these days--not just a function of age, but also practice....when you're off as much as he is...), and Norm agrees with nearly everything Donnie says in order not to undermine him or not be seen in some bizarre way racist. But, it's the most listenable of the three unlistenable post shows.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Why are they still allowing the eternal asswhip Mike in D-ville to call in and get on the air? I understand that creating some controversy means possibly-hilarious Norm meltdowns and ebrakes, but the guy's bit is tired and he's a total moron.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I begrudgingly say this, but MiD's point wasn't invalid. Norm and Donnie's response was short-sighted. Indeed, Bob pretty much made the MiD's take his main thesis as to why the Cowboys sucked so bad last night. So while I agree with you, Gareth, that MiD is an asswhipping of the highest order, this time, he got it right.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What was Bob's thesis? I'll look for his analysis online if he's still doing it.

  31. Man, of late, as in the past 3 years, I've had a hard time dealing with Danny's bullshit. The only person more inconsistent and more full of shit on The Ticket than Danny has been Corby in that time. But man, I have to say, Danny's pull no punches flat out tell it like it is take on Zeke was totally fucking ball's deep dead on perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Confessors, I love each and every one of you.

But remember: Not everyone is listening all the time. If you are going to comment on something you heard on The Ticket, TELL US WHAT THE F. H. IT WAS.

244, what was Danny's take that was so ball's deep dead on perfect?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anyone have a URL to yesterday's Fake Jerry?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Basically Dan Ball's Deep said that THL has been saying Zeke is a very troubled dude since he was drafted. That he's not a good guy and has a lot of issues and that he'll probably have a short career. Not just here but anywhere, period. Said this stuff is only the beginning of what's gonna be a never ending cavalcade of incidents, arrests and suspensions. THAT'S WHAT THE F. H. IT WAS.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I tried to go to theunticket to get a link for fake jerry for the other poster, and I just get a banner page about how the site has moved. I flush dns and such as it says, and still no unticket. Did it die a horrible death?

    ReplyDelete
  36. 3:29 - The Unticket appears to be up and running OK. Maybe you hit a momentary glitch?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, it looks ok this morning. Maybe I caught it during a server move or something.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have to agree with Danny on this one. I am going by the above description; I didn't hear the words of Mr Balis myself. Zeke has shown time and time again he is lacking, not just in maturity, but in character. It's very likely he will be one of those guys that we're talking about in ten years, wondering about what could have been, if only he hadn't thrown his career away early.

  40. A little late to the TC show but I wonder if his dream of hosting a show has now taken a backseat to the podcasting. He is doing 4 to 5 different podcasts a week now (2 IJB's, one on politics, one on college football, one on movies and the Rabble call of the Cowboys games). The blowout podcast network has to be consuming alot more of his time and I'd suspect the only reason he'd be that involved with something is that he seems a legitimate money making future in it. They don't conduct themselves on there like they're using it as auditions for future full time radio hosts. It's possible that he sees this network as his future and doesn't want to waste his time with hosting a weekend show. Just a guess......
