OPEN THREAD: White Elephant Day

My hits go through the roof on White Elephant Day.  It has been suggested that this is the result of Ticketarians of one level or another checking in to see what the Nation has to say.

So please post your carefully-considered observations on what you hear.  Me, it's going to be dicey for being able to be much by the channel, so I'll be waiting for your thoughts just like the most curious Cumulus employee goofing off by checking MTC every few minutes.

White Elephant Day is a lot of fun, but the interactions are seldom awkward.  The best part is that every  host who may be reaching a different audience, and every JV guy who gets some spotlight time, goes out of his way to put on a good show, with the possible exception of Mike R.  The highlight for me has always been The Joonz's Tickers.

[Speaking of awkward interactions, they don't get much more awkward than George and Fernando sniping at each other this morning (Tuesday) over the Tim-Duncan-flipping-the-bird-to-a-fan-taking-his-picture story.]

Thanks for contributing, everyone.

  1. This station has so many regulars who's been there for a radio eternity that when they have the TWE, chemistry will happen naturally. I was thinking yesterday that this is something The Fan could never copy from the Little One because that's something they don't have; chemistry. This is a day where I don't tune out at anytime during the day.

  2. I'm liking Dan's Tickers. Finding myself wishing they were a little longer.

  3. FM signal has been intermittent this morning. That's the first time that's been going on in a while.

Dan's tickets have been solid humor.

  5. One of the highlights of Dan's tickers have been when the sponsor is "Quaker Steak and Lube". I also appreciate his tickerception approach.

Norm and Donnie are a really good combination. Norm needs a foil, and Donnie needs a wingman, and they work really well together. As the previous (deleted) comment said, they have great chemistry.

  6. The real action on White Elephant Day is the tickers. Everything else just sounds like Guys Night Out roundtables (not that there's anything wrong with those).

  7. Even though he can grate on my nerves when he picks on George (I heart Mr. Dunham!), I think Gordon is a great storyteller. The retelling of his interview with Jimmy Kimmel offers an insight into his vulnerability that we don't often have a chance to see. He could be pulling one over on us, but his nervousness about how the interview went over seemed genuine. So did his praise of Jimmy. I think he too often takes his role of yuk monkey to the extreme that it just becomes an eye roll and a groan. I don't want shock factor just for the shock; I want it because it's a necessary part of moving a show forward.

More Jer and Fernando don't hurt, either.

    ReplyDelete
  8. And then he ruins it with the "Jimmy lovemaking in the back of my Honda" crap. Thanks, Gordo. Glad to see the "real" you is still in there.

  9. It is funny when you read the FB reaction about Dan and his tickers. It is tgeccomplete opposite take from the commenters here, which I agree with. I see the humor in Dan's delivery & personality. Of course a regular ticker guy couldn't get away with this, but this is not a normal day.

  10. That's interesting. After my comment above I heard several other Dan Tickers and I thought they were all amusing in that kind of sly Dan meta-observational way.

I had a pretty positive reaction to the whole morning drive show, moved along right smart, kept my interest, made me laugh out loud once for sure, and I think I may have snorted once in amusement.

Did not hear any of Gordon's show.

The FAN is doing an on-air White Elephant Day? Oh man. Surely not. If they in fact are, I hope the hosts are not happy about it. It sounds like something management came up with: "hey, if we imitate The Ticket in every way possible, we'll become The Ticket and get their ratings!" If not, if the hosts are on board, then they are absolutely shameful.

I thought Mike's Tickers were excellent. Dan did good job. So far, Junes is knocking the s out of it like he always does. All in all I'm loving WED, like I do every year. "Norm's" letter to Santa had me in tears! I will say this, I don't think I could stand a daily Gordo driven/solo show. It becomes repetitive and too much to take after a while. And I'm not sure if I could stomach NPR/thoughtful/philosophical Gordo on a daily basis either. But he's brilliant in the role that he's been playing for the last 18+ years.

Sorry Dick Hicks, I'm a fan of yours, and I'm a fan of metal, but your statement that it's all a bit for the bands is totally wrong. For it not to be a bit is the exception, not the rule. I'm not talking about Metallica or Judas Priest or bands like that. But Lamb of God and bands of that ilk are VERY invested in the imagery and ideas behind it. VERY much invested.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's pretty stupid if The Fan tries to do it. I don't see how any of their shows will be much different, stylistically since they will just talk about the same DFW sports topics they do every day anyway.

"Hey Fan Fans! Welcome to our White Elephant Day, it's Elf with Greggo today whoa hoh we're really changing it up! Now let's discuss the Cowboys December struggles and preview the Bengals game..."

    Zzzzzzzzz

    ReplyDelete
  21. My listening was pretty spotty, as I expected. I only heard bits and pieces of PM drive -- what I heard was pretty much 100% Bob, but as I say, it was a very limited sample.

I will say that Mike S's introduction to the rasslin' trivia segment was laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Sounds like the reviews are pretty unanimous that the day was another howling success.

And, as in past years -- today's hits were the highest of the last 30 days.

  22. Scattershooting while listening to Intentional Grounding...

I understand the premise of the show: two guys on the more intellectual side of the spectrum wax Cowboys in a philosophical way. OK. But I'm not sure if it has enough gas to make it through the next 4 (hopefully +) games. I say this because they've already hit the existential nature of the organization and its relationship with the city and its fans; the "this thing will never change until Jerry dies" meme; the "real" Jason Garrett; and now how Romo is under appreciated and maligned for no good reason. We still have a month left in the season. What's more, they've filled many shows with Cowboy related guests (story of how they moved to Arlington, etc.). What happens after the season ends? They close shop and return next season? If that's the case, then won't any momentum and name recognition earned be lost, and thus they'll have to start over afresh? I enjoy the show, a lot. It's my hope that the show continues on past the Cowboy season. And that they're given an additional hour or two. Bob and David have much more to offer than Cowboy talk. I'd really like to hear what they have to say. Now whether I agree with them or not is a different matter.

    ReplyDelete
  23. OK, question: Is the Fan really doing a White Elephant Day now, at this time? Or is Confessor RW just having us on? Or was what he heard someone on the Fan just kidding around? I don't see any reference to it on The FAN website (although when I click on "Station Events," the response is "Page Not Found.")

It's incredible to believe that The FAN would do this almost contemporaneously with The Ticket's WED, inviting the avalanche of scorn it richly deserves (if true). Can anyone confirm or dispute?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh yes, White Elephant: Greaty greaty great great, all around! The Tickers were fantastic. I loved Dan's gradual build up/slow burn on the Alexis front. Too funny. Mike R's Tickers were rock solid. They were anything but the promised mail-in. And Junes. Well, Junes is Junes, and Junes is greatness. When I heard the opening to The Rant, I actually got goosebumps for a second. Fake Norm's letter to Santa Claus made me spit out my coffee (in my car, while driving). And what can I say about Bob's segment on his work with orphans and poverty...he's a good man, a very good man.

All in all, a wonderful day to be a P1.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I looked on both their webpage and twitter account and saw nothing about a WED on Friday. I did see where they're having their FANniverssary at the same place Ticket Stock was held, which is weird. Maybe RW was a prankster? RW = Richie Whitt (a fake one)?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Plainsman, I am pretty positive that is what I heard them say. They didn't call it a White Elephant Day, but they did say they were jumbling the shows up. I heard Greggo say he was going to be on the morning show and Richie said he would be on with Shan Shariff in the afternoons. They are also having a Faniversary on Saturday, which sounds a lot like Ticketstock.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No, RW doesnt stand for Richie Whitt. That is an unfortunate coincidence. I don't have hairplugs or an ear ring. And I try and act my age, not 20 years younger.

    ReplyDelete
  28. HAHAHA! Well put, RW!!!!

The FAN is sad. How shameless can you get? Then again you're talking about a station that employs the real RW and that let's said middle-aged boy-man date one of his co-hosts AND talk about it over the air. And that has done nothing but hire ex Ticket employees. From the program director to hosts to their version of Ticker personnel. It's a bad touch station with a disingenuous feel to it. I don't like saying this because I've always been fond of Elf (a Ticket Day One, by the way). But I have to call a turd a turd.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The success of White Elephant Day just speaks to the talent all of these guys have. Take them out of their comfort zone and they still deliver the goods.

    ReplyDelete
  30. WED rocked! If the FAIL actually does pull something like it tomorrow I'll never listen to it again. Considering that I only listen to it once in a while and only for a few minutes at best, I guess they won't be losing much. Still. Really dug seeing the other side of Gordo. Not NPR Gordo, but Gordo who seems to know his place in the bigger picture of things. Also liked hearing him today genuinely cringe over his fake Norm letter to Santa and the fake Doug Free. It's good to know that he sees them as real people and not just punch lines. I like me some Gordo Keef.

I tuned into the Elf/Slater show on The FAN just in time for their mix with RaGE. Yes, they are doing a WED. Except they're calling it Swap Day or something. In addition to that, they will be playing a prank on a host. Another original idea. If that's not enough, it sounds like the RaGE fellas were listening to Intentional Grounding last night. Greggo said that he and Whitt would be discussing if whether Tony Romo is unfairly treated, if he's being treated like Don Meridith and Danny White were by the fans. Gee, I think I heard that very topic discussed last night. What a bunch of dopes.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The Fan is mixing up shifts (not new or an idea started by the ticket) b/c of holiday talent scheduling and b/c they are celebrating their 4th anniversary. Nothing more, nothing less. It's hilarious if some of you people really think what you write.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Nice to see you here again, Whitt. Sorry, pal, your explanation doesn't hold. The Fanniversary is Saturday, at the Irving Convention Center (where The Ticket held theirs). So, eh, try again, pal. You're right that The Ticket didn't start WED. But seeing how your station is nothing but Ticket re-treads, hacks, chicks with botox, and that you copy pretty much everything The Ticket does, it's pretty safe to assume this too is a rip job. Especially considering when it's being done. And my goodness, your Fanniversary is being held at the SAME place as this past Ticketstock. A shameless bunch of lunkheads, all of you. Again, thanks for popping by, Whitt.

  36. Which FAN host has Bruce Gilbert selected to go to South America to adopt a kid?

    ReplyDelete
  37. If memory serves, and I get this info from this site, Jonessa is married with child/children. I doubt she has the time to call into The Musers every Friday around 9am just to say "I love you madly, Georgie." I'd be shocked if she did!!!

Nice one, Anon Ron. Is there anything Ticket that The FAIL won't ape? And for the love of all that's good in this world, that RaGE tv ad is idiotic. It's bad enough that RW is nearly 50 with fake bake tan, earrings, hair plugs gelled like a 24 yr old 30k millionaire, and has raided Ed Hardy's closet, but Greggo, who is in his mid to late 50s is wearing a white belt and dressed up like he's in My Chemical Romance. What the what??????? The things people will do to be famous and succeed are mind blowing. Oh well.

  38. Corby just actually gave a highly thought out, powerfully cerebral description of New Orleans by saying, "It's there, it's...NEW ORLEANS." This may surpass the mental gymnastics corby executed when he conjured up the provocative description of Mick Jagger saying, "Mick is Mick."

    ReplyDelete
  39. Someone on this site wrote that Corby's actually a pretty smart guy, but he doesn't seem to think about much outside of his own life and narrow interests so when he tries to riff on something extemporaneously he sounds rather dumb. Well, whoever that person is, I think h/she is right.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yesterday Mr. Whitt got a little short with a caller who reminded them that their WED was copying something the Ticket has been doing for years.

Mr. Whitt's reply (after the caller was cut off):

"Can we not talk Rangers? Can we not talk Cowboys? Can we not use microphones?"

    Crushed it, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, they are well aware of their rip job of everything Ticket. And when they're among themselves and among the T-Bars, the NASCAR Dennises, and other Greggo acolytes they all tell each other it isn't so. But they know. Just a hunch, but I'll bet there are some hosts there that are cringing that they're a part of something which has done nothing but try to define itself by aping its better, in every single possible way. From the PD to the hosts to the sports update people...it's all one big rip job.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Trust me, Richie doesn't know this site exists-not him defending a mix and match day. It's to CELEBRATE the Faniversary, so your explanation doesn't hold, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh Whtt, back for more, eh, pal. The Fanifarcery is Saturday. It's in Irving, which is 7 minutes, with traffic, from the KRLD studios. So don't give me your bulsh line about needing to juggle schedules so you can celebrate. And by the way, celebrate what? Your abysmal ratings, from day one, despite all the money on billboards, tv ads, DART bus ads, and your own nightly tv show? Nice try Whitt. "Doesn't hold." Ever the philosopher, you are, Whitt. Why don't you write up one of your patented village atheist spiels for us? Ya know, as an early Christmas present. Um, excuse me, holiday gift.

    @9:38Anon
Let me get this straight: You are on such intimate terms with RW that you *know* he isn't aware of this site (indeed, you ask us to "trust you"). And being in RW's inner circle, are we to believe that you, being the sort of loyal person that you seem to be (because after all you've been posting defenses of The FAN's blatant copycat routine), wouldn't, even in passing, as those in an inner circle are wont to do, mention to RW that this site exists and is not too terribly positive where he and his employer are concerned? No offense, but I can't believe this to be the case; that is, if your relationship with RW is as how you present it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Got an email notice that the Ticket Top Ten tonight (Friday) will be from White Elephant Day. Same show as Wednesday night? I don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Has anyone been listening to The FAN's WED today? If so, has any host(s) brought up the allegations that they stole the bit from The Ticket? I would, but I'm unable to listen to anything today at work. (My CTOs are in the house at present.)

    ReplyDelete
  50. "The great, Noam Chomsky." And just like that, Jake ruins all the good he did with his Christmas rap. HI I'm Noam Chomsky. My linguistic theories have all been debunked and are no longer studied. I am now best known for my anti-American nonsense. Especially against the government. Never mind the fact that for my entire adult life my entire take of income has been from said government. Yes, I am a hypocrite of the highest order. ake,

Jake, you're a college educated dupe; a prototypical useful idiot. Then again, you think Howard Zinn is an actual historian. Gotta love graduate school.

Mike said "I could care less what he was doing then, and I could care less what he's doing now."

    ReplyDelete
  51. @3:20Anon

I agree with you that Chomsky is a discredited, hypocritical fool that only finds an audience among the sillier and radical academics and their poor students who are led to believe that Chomsky has something meaningful to say. I also agree that Zinn is not someone to read if you want a down the middle history. But come on, madam/sir, to say that Jake's awesome rap was ruined by his shout out to Chomsky is silly on your part. Who cares if the guy is drawn to foolish thinkers. He's young and he has a graduate degree. I'm ten years older than Jake and I too have a graduate degree. When I was his age I thought Chomsky was the man, as well. So did ALL of my fellow students. And guess what, if you were a student who happened to be on the right side of the aisle, Ayn Rand was your foolish thinker of choice. It's called being young, well educated, and a product of that bubble like environment. He'll figure it out one day. And if he doesn't, then either he went into academia or his thinking never matured. Again, who cares? And how does it have any bearing upon his great rap? So lighten up, and give the kid a break. He's very good at his job and I for one think he adds a lot to both BAD and THL.

  52. Long time reader, first time commenter here ...

Did flippin' Rhyner just say that Led Zep is so good they didn't have to rip off any other artist?????? Did I???? I guess Mr. Music ... oh and I didn't hear Mr. Music Jr., Danny jump in on this either... doesn't realize that Black Dog, Livin' Lovin' Maid, Rock n Roll, Good Times, Bad Times, and Dazed and Confused ... just for starter ... are old blues riffs that Page COMPLETELY and UNABASHEDLY and UNAPOLOGETICALLY ripped off. Hell, a few tunes are totally ripped off from old blues artists. I really can't believe that Rhyner is that ignorant of this. Danny too. It utterly destroys my esteem for their knowledge of music and music history. Damn. What a crappy day for me in Ticket history.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Grady is right about Led Zeppelin.
To put a finer point on it here ya go:

"Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."

    • "Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."

    • "Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes).

    • "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."

    • "How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."

    • "In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).

    • "The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70's and settled out of court.

    • "Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.

    • "Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.

    • "Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.

    • "Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit. This one, as we heard (though Mike talked over it) is startling. Zep copied the entire song and used it as the intro to Stairway. Give it a listen. But sit down first. Ridiculous.

    • "White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."

    • " Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."

And there's more, much more. Zep was no doubt electrifying and one of the most important bands of the rock era. But let's not kid ourselves about their originality. Pages' "sloppiness" was a learned one. Go back and listen to his Yardbirds and studio stuff and you'll see what I mean. He tried to play sloppy during certain sections to emulate the early blues players that he so admired (and blatantly ripped off without giving credit, much less compensation).

So Mike, you're talking out of your arse when you say Zep was too talented to resort to stealing from other musicians. You'd think Danny might now this stuff and would've spoken up. Guess you learn stuff about people in the most unusual and unexpected way. I wouldn't have gone to all this trouble, but since The Hardline goes out of it's way to be the show of musical authority (and spend so many segments on music), I felt it needed to be said.

  60. Is that photo actually from the FANniversary? If so, wow! That's sad. So much so, I almost feel sorry for them. Damn. I wonder if they did this as a sort of last resort to show the CBS higher ups that they should be allowed to continue as is? If so, they, ahem, FAILed miserably.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm not quite as tribal as some who comment here, but that pic is good for a serious lol moment. poor fan.

    ReplyDelete
  62. In fairness to The Fan:

What are we looking that in that picture? When was it taken? Could it have been a rehearsal? Are there extenuating circumstances that would explain the deserted floor?

Shaggy, my faithful Confessor, did you infiltrate the event and take that picture?

    ReplyDelete
  63. It was from twitter. Guy says it was 2-3 hours into the event.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Absurd, there were over 1,500 people at the event. And by the way, The Fan's ratings have sucked this year, noones denying it. But 2011 was a great year, one in which The Fan's middays were a consummate no.1. So there has been some to celebrate. No one expects The Fan to beat the Ticket. Not the people that work there, not the CBS execs. So i don't see why you all berate it for not doing so. Again, this is definitely not Richie- There are people involved in stations that aren't on the air. BTW, The reason for the shuffle on Friday was for Elf's son's graduation.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 108, thanks for the information and the perspective, although I'm not quite sure I understood all of it. Has The Fan overtaken Norm/BaD in the ratings? I hadn't thought so, but haven't checked lately. In any event, I'm happy to hear from Fan-fans, I believe they call themselves, with any information or positive viewpoints about the station. We'll keep the flaming under control; please feel free to tell us what's good about The Fan, or where we have gone wrong.

(In fact, this site and the occasional Confessor have spoken positively about Fan program content on many occasions.)

I don't think this site or Confessors generally berate The Fan for having low ratings. It's what appears to be The Fan's sort of sad aping of personalities, bits, and gimmicks that causes the eye-rolling here.

Anyway, thanks for letting us hear from you. If you can shed any further light on that forlorn photo, please do.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Josh and Elf were ahead of BAD/Norm and BenSkin/Cowherd for the majority of 2011 in M25-54 Share% to be clear.

    ReplyDelete
  67. As for the photo-no chance that was taken between 9p and 1a (when the bands actually played). Has to be a sound check. Mysterious Ways (the U2 cover band) and Lewin's band both bring crowds bigger than that alone without the Fan affiliation. In any case, the area in the photo in no way resembles the rest of the space.

    ReplyDelete
  68. There's no chance the Fan has ever beaten The Ticket in any time slot between 5a-7p in M25-54.

    Show me the data.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah, this FAN Anon is full of crap. Those 2011 numbers are bunk. I just went and looked them up. I don't know why people lie like that in this day and age when it's so easy to expose the lies. These Anon posts read just like the ones Whitt used to make in his own comment section for Whitt's End. And he came on this site a few times doing the same thing in the past. We know it's you, Twit.

    ReplyDelete
  70. With respect to 325's claims re midday ratings for 2011. He uses the phase "M25-54 share% to be sure," like he's referencing a different way to measure ratings other than the one everyone looks at. Is it possible that 325 is correct if one measure rather than another is considered? We have some very knowledgeable ratings-readers, so I would be interested if there is ANY measure where 325 could arguably be correct. Just making sure we're giving The Fan all appropriate consideration here.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Just found the site, love it! I know, GNG.

There is no way the fan has ever beat the ticket in any time slot. If they had RW would have been quick to point it out, just like he did the couple of times they briefly over took espn. I, like the last poster, would need to see proof.

    ReplyDelete
  72. A sly reading of the ratings only furthers the notion that RW is the FAN fan Anon poster.

    ReplyDelete
  73. 1005 or anyone: Can we PLEASE get an explanation of the 2011 Fan ratings and why 325's Fan-friendly interpretation is "sly"? Thanks.

  74. I have no idea what a sly reading means. The only thing I can guess is that it's a manipulation of statistical data, which is pretty common in all businesses. Whatever the case is, the ratings are there for anyone to see, and they don't comport with the Fan Fan's version of things. So I think that's all that really matters here.

  75. The only time J&E got close they were in the 5 range. Never 6's-10's. The Ticket is an anomaly across the country. No station does as well in it's own market as the Ticket does.
That being said, The Fan is definitely not expected to be or beat The Ticket by anybody inside those doors, yet (it's way too early in the station's existence). Some of their young talent is pretty interesting, mostly because it is home grown. Slow Jeff, Gavin (import), Nathan, Kevin, Cory and even Slater has her moments (for a girl). And Shan Sharif is a blowhard but he's a strong host for an import from up North.
But nobody at the station has near the experience or depth as any show at The Ticket. Those shows have been doing it for so long it's just natural to them.
I would anticipate some changes for sure by July, if not earlier.
As for the Fanniversary, seen some pictures on the Twitter that show a bunch of fans, probably more than 1,200 at one peak time. The Fan is not competition for The Ticket, but it is an FM station that could gain traction if given enough time groom its own talent. Wonder if Greggo (other former Ticket employees and RW) wasn't at the station would there be animosity toward the other players.
