Elf Out, G-Bag Middays

I'm behind the curve on this one, but for those wishing to comment further on a major change at The Fan:

Mark Elfenbein & Jane Slater out, Gavin Dawson and team moving to middays.

I liked Elf's weekend show on The Ticket, but what I heard of The Fan midday show, both before and after Slater came on board (which concededly wasn't much, in either case), seemed to me to denature the guy, dilute his strengths.

I've caught some G-Bag.  Usually a quick switch to the Top Ten, but not always.  Chris Arnold was gone from The Ticket by the time I got to DFW, haven't found him compelling to date on what I've heard, but not objectionable, either.

  1. After Josh left, Elf was hanging out to dry hoping to find a co host that would be a fit for him. I, like most, got acclimated with Elf on the weekends where he was the dominant voice on his show and led everything. I found him to be a better +1 when the Ticket did White Elephant(he did participate in this, no?) Anyways, I always enjoyed him more when he was an addition. Seems like a really great guy and I hope there's something out there for him.
As far as Slater, what the heck? Why throw a novice into the fire when most people cut their teeth at nights or on weekends? I don't really have much to say on her accept I think she's a hot, you don't have to.
In regards to GBag, I am probably one of the few that enjoy the show. I like the youth element of it, no holds barred, and enjoy segments they do on things like technology and gaming. They're a, or were, a night time show to listen to while relaxing. It's definitely a show you have to give a chance because there are so many players interacting. I wasn't in DFW when Chris Arnold was on the ticket, the most I knew of him was when Corby and Mike would do impressions of him. I enjoy what he brings to the show, he's smooth and I can get over the fact that he's a Sooner because he doesn't kill you with it. Now saying all that, if I was going to pick a spot for this show, I don't know if this is the best time slot for their target. This particular time slot has seen the most turnover at the fan in terms of shuffling, and you think it would be the least because someone should or could usurp Norm from 10-12. At 12 everything belongs to BaD, but there is some potential in this time slot because there's a wild card known as Mike Bascik. He really picked up speed on Norm's show until he mistakenly tweeted an inside Ticket saying. Listening to the show already today, I think it has a much better chance than the Elf and Slater show, but only time will tell.
The Ben and Skin show is still a no go for me, sorry KT. I can't even fight through listening on Fridays with Cowlishaw because of all the fawning done over him.

  2. I'm a fan...not Fan Fan...of this move. For a while I thought that G-Bag had a good show and brought original sports points to the listener. I can say that I like the group of guys on the show and think they will do alot better than Elf and Slater.

It was frustrating in the afternoons when BADD would ramble on or stretch out a topic and I would have no place to turn the dial. Much better option now.

Also, what is up with KT's voice? I never listen to that show but when I tuned in the other day he sounded very Busby/Barney like... I wonder if he's been trying to work on it.

  3. Agreed this is a MUCH better option for lunchtime listening during BaD commercials or punch outs (which are few and far between for BaD but there are some -- am I the only one who hates the Jason Witten show?). Never could stand either of the Elf shows on the fan but what I've heard of GBag has been decent (admittedly it was before he got co-hosts so I'm hoping it hasn't gotten worse because of them).

  4. Obviously being a P1 since I was a kid, and also working at the Ticket made me a complete radio snob. That's part of the genius of The Ticket actually though. I had no reason to ever have any negative thoughts about any of the shows on The Fan, but I did.

Since I arrived at The Fan, I immediately fell in love with the G-Bag Nation, or however you spell it, and i've become really good friends with everyone on that show. They will be a very fun listen. Adding Bacsik will be awesome as well. That will be the show with the most energy in the entire metroplex. Really happy for them.

John, as far as my voice, i've kind of always had a terrible voice. I haven't really been working on anything specifically as far as my voice goes. I should.

  6. KT, I wasn't dissing your delivery or anything but was just curious. IMO you're the only personality that I like on that show. I just don't want to see B&S pigeon hole you into a spot where you're just doing bit segments.

Although I must say that I've been kinda disappointed since the B&S show launch. I had expected the show to bring me more away from punch out segments on the Ticket but....it hasn't. I mean it's bad when I'm tuning into 1080 am or NPR during my afternoon drive!! God save me.

Also, I really liked G-bag today.

  7. yeah I knew you weren't dissing me. Glad you enjoyed G-bag. They're fun.

What specifically don't you like about B&S?

I think i've had a pretty decent role. It's obviously not the KT show, and I try to stay out of the sports stuff, but it's definitely better than doing weekend tickers.

  8. KT,

You are the man. I miss you on the Ticket. Thanks for dropping by here.

  9. KT, I think you're doing the best you can with what's been giving to you. I've no idea how decisions are made, etc., within the B&S compound, but I'm sure you go along and get along. My sole complaint is your use of "havin' fun?". I know you're an ex-Ticket guy, but that's very much a Ticket thing. They even have a promo for it going now. Other than that, keep on keeping on and stay hard.

  10. Good for Bacsik, he should've gotten that gig in 2012 when they were looking for Josh Lewin's replacement and instead went with Jane Slater. The Fan sure does love those evening 5-hour shows though. I'm not sure how the K&C Masterpiece will fill all those hours every day.

  12. Well, I was a former member of Team Having Fun. Actually, i've got my lifelong Team Having Fun card....but I don't know that I use the term 'having fun' a lot. At least if I do, i'm not real aware of it.

  13. Giving KT hell for using "Having Fun" just reeks of someone looking for a reason to nitpick. Really, let it go.
