Bob Sturm confirms on Twitter:  The Ticket has won the Marconi for Sports Radio Station of the Year.

Thanks to Confessor So Anonymous for his comment on the last thread for the tip.

"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've  got 'til it's gone."

Congratulations to all hosts, the JV, and yes, the CTO.

  1. Whoa! How could I forget The Ticket's technical staff! More than any station I know, they contribute hugely to the station's success. A big tip o' the MTC chapeau to you.

    You too, Conrad.

  2. Hot Dog! Great job, Ticket! It's about time you were recognized for the greatness that you are!

  3. They did win the same award in 2007. I was looking at their Wikipedia page to confirm and someone has put on that they've won it a second time "despite airing Ferrall On The Bench and other spares at night". You kids...
Here's the link if anyone's interested in going back through memory lane. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KTCK

  4. I am happy that they won, just to remind the Hardline that they are on a great station and to quit being lazy!

I havent been able to listen this morning. Does anyone know if Dunham and Miller won the personality of the year award as well?

  9. T4,

you are cordially invited to join Another Internet Forum (AIF) to discuss the upcoming season of survivor.Do you think it looks like it's going to suck? i think Iit looks like it's going to suck. Hey, CBS, what's the dealio with casting Rupert again? that's just a sample of things we can talk about. hope to see you soon.

  10. @ Anon 1:00 pm. Link? I searched the name given and it didn't anything that looked like what I was expecting. I'm always up for some Survivor talk. I think having another caveat of their loved ones in the game will add another level of shenanigans, so I think it's got some promise.

  11. There are rumors surfacing that Ben and SKin are being moved to mid days and G Bag moving to drivetime. Can anyone confirm this to be true? KT can you say anything about it?

  12. Congratulations, Little Ticket! It couldn't have happened to nicer guys.

  13. 201...haven' heard that - is that something you've heard since elf was let go or just before?

I think they would do VERY well in the 10 and 11 o'clock hours and might get some carry over into the noon hour if people lost track of time and didn't flip to BaD right away (wake and jake is my favorite part of the day so i'd be watching the clock)

  15. Hey, listen up to a cool story. Confessor P1 Bryan's brother headed up an effort to help an Aggie fan cancer patient with a big surprise and some major help with medical bills, still needed. He passed this along and I thought it worthy of sharing with our merry band:

  16. I congratulate the talent and management of The Ticket for winning the Marconi for 2013.

However, I do have questions which you Confession-ers should think about:

1-What is the value in winning this award in terms of the radio landscape in 2013? Especially for AM radio stations, even though two of the five nominated were AM.

2-How much different is the radio landscape when they won the same award in 2007? I know I listen to radio less and hear more podcasts, even for sports.

3- Every Ticket show has the same content/format for a decade. I know when to checkout, regardless if I live in DFW or not.
As other Confession-ers who are local have repeatedly said, items like ENews; New Music Talk; TiVo/show specific talk; or anything which you saw earlier on Deadspin/BigLead are an instant tune out as it is old news.

People tap out and move on as told here. In 2013, I do "listen less". Moving to FM is not going to assist them to a younger generation. More TC is not their answer either.

  17. Amazing how the doom and gloom can continue, even when discussing the little ticket being recognized as the best sports station in the country! Here's a different perspective: I am on the younger end of the target demographic (31) and not native to TX. I tune in specifically to the muse in the news, e-news, and community quick hits because my nose is not glued to websites as I go through my day. My tuneouts are too much local sports (as I said, non-native so multiple segments on any local team I don't care for is tiresome), but the conversational and comedic telling of the big stories of the day, packaged in a fun way so I keep abreast of what's going on without reading blogs and websites constantly, is a big hit for the younger'uns. See: the Daily Show.

  18. Oh poor, poor "P1-Mike". Poor kid...
The Ticket was not openly nominated, they were nominated by Cumulus and local management for the awards. It was the NAB committees which made them finalists.

You thinking that winning an award equals that 1310 is, "the little ticket being recognized as the best sports station in the country"? It means that a committee who may have never heard the station think they are good enough to win. It does not help that they are now Cumulus owned.

It also means that is is good in 2012-13 but overall fail to realize how people in 2013 listen to radio. And if you want to use most listened to sports radio stations. 1301 is doing well, but

Ticket host hate "The Big Bang Theory" yet it wins Emmy Awards, so does it matter?

Plus, P1 Mike, a household can DVR "The Daily Show", yet one cannot do that for a show on The Ticket as a full show is unavailable for a podcast.

  19. DA:
Not sure how the nomination process proves the ticket is about to die, as you've been doom and glooming for years, and not sure how DVR or the lack thereof affects me liking muse in the news. But enjoy this link: http://www.theunticket.com/usave-it/

You CAN download full shows (for instance, the full 4 hour segment of the Hardline) as a podcast. I'm subscribed to that particular podcast that offers that.

  21. FYI - The category of "Sports Talk Radio" has now officially been changed to "Breaking Bad Talk Radio". smh

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, I really look forward to two, well three, after all the analysis is over, weeks. Then, like The Sopranos all those years ago, this thing will finally go away. I'm so sick of Breaking Bad. I can't even count how many wasted segments on every single show, weekday or weekend, have been wasted on that stupid show. You'd think they were having a psychoanalytic discussion of Magic Mountain. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Only on MTC can a thread about The Ticket winning a Marconi turn into talk about why The Ticket sucks. Not quite sure why you people continue to listen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Maybe you should read the banner at the top of the blog. If you want a Ticket fangirl site maybe you should start one. It's not like the Ticket doesn't spend enough time patting themselves on the back.

    ReplyDelete
  25. After spending 3 months in a city that carried only national sports talk I returned to DFW with even more admiration for the shows on The Ticket. Never again will I complain about Corby or Norm.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's not just the Ticket that does BB talk, it's every damn station and nearly every show I listen to. It's completely unoriginal and a give-up to kill segments. If I was really into the show and kept 100% current with it, I might appreciate the segments, but how many people actually fall into this category? Given the large percentage of people who don't even have cable, they seem to be intentionally alienating a lot of listeners. But of course I lack the genius of the people who make these decisions.

  27. Breaking Bad is awesome though.

  30. The Musers seem to be a Breaking Bad-free zone.

They're still trying to sort out "Lost."

    ReplyDelete
  31. Gordon is definitely caught up on Breaking Bad. He was probably on it from the start. The Musers never started it I don't think, which seems weird to me because I know Junior loves Boardwalk Empire. I understand George not watching it having kids and stuff, but I would have thought the Junez would be caught up.

The only people who don't like Breaking Bad are the people who have never seen it. It's very hard to find anyone who has watched Breaking Bad and doesn't like it. It's the greatest show in TV history, or at least a Top 3. The people who are against Breaking Bad talk are people who haven't seen it, which I understand. We get it a lot with B&S and people texting in for us to "shut up with the breaking bad talk, talk sports".

The truth is, talking just sports in Dallas, doesn't work. It works in New York and Chicago and Philly. It doesn't work here.

So to anyone who hasn't seen Breaking Bad yet, AMC is running the entire series beginning on Wednesday, so clear out some DVR space and get addicted. You'll be glad you did.

  32. I've got my dvr to record every episode. I've seen everyone so far, but wanted to skim through a lot of them. I find my self forgetting about things in the show that made it awesome. And...I love any and all BB talk on the Ticket or G-Bag nation.

  33. KT:

As one who has seen the "front lines" of the methamphetamine world, I can assure you that most of what you see is fictional. Fictional in the sense that (i) what they portray is loosely based on the reality of that world, and (ii) that what they try to make "smart" isn't really as such in that world, but in fact what actually goes down, especially in the realm of sexuality, deviance, etc., is not even remotely come close to in the series.

In other words: If you want a tasty morality tale along the lines of BB, read Goethe's Faust. I'm serious. But please don't fool yourself into thinking that BB is in any way close to the actual world that it is set in. It isn't. That particular world is much cruder, less sophisticated (and on every level, no matter how high up), and much much less cerebral, than depicted by the writers of BB. The real depravity, stupidity, and utter inhumanity that goes on that world would stun, absolutely stun, you.

    Again. Read Faust.

  34. Sorry, I poorly worded a part of my first paragraph. But I hope you, KT, and others, get my gist.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's awesome, i'll check that out.

Saying that i've witnessed the "front lines" of the meth world is probably a little inaccurate, but I grew up in Olney. A tiny town about 3 hours west of Dallas. I had a couple friends, because everyone is friends in Olney, who's parents had meth addictions and ran their own meth lab.

You would frequently find them in the local grocery store buying copious amounts of cat food. The reason for that being that the smell of cat urine can help cover up some of the chemicals used while making crystal meth.

The thing about Breaking Bad that is false is that there's a stereotype that it's a show about meth. Sure there's a meth component, but the show is far more than "that show about meth".

I highly doubt that the Ticket's advertisers care about Males 25-54 that don't have cable. They are are either poor or pretentious snobs who brag about not watching TV (and wouldn't be listening to sports talk anyways).
