The Night Before

Two nights before, actually.

I usually enjoy The Ticket's draft coverage even if I don't have a lot of interest in the draft.  I only got to listen to about two hours of it this time around, Thursday evening.  The time leading up to and just following the Cowboys' pick.

It was OK, certainly didn't punch out, but it seemed somehow  .  .  .  I dunno, undernourished.  In the past, The Ticket seemed to have made an investment in the draft, really talked it up, promoted the coverage heavily.  Not so much this year, just the guys in the studio, and Cumulus didn't even turn the air conditioning on for them.

There wasn't the same verve and, I daresay, the same preparation we have heard in years past.  Norm mispronounced names of at least two of the top batch of picks, and on one occasion he was corrected incorrectly by one of the other hosts.

Bob was good, as usual, but seemed kind of checked out, not really fully engaged.  I can't put my finger on it.  No criticism, I just got the feeling that maybe he wasn't all that interested in fighting with all the other voices.

As other commenters have observed, Corby was one guy too many.  Nothing to add on the football front. And he was doing something peculiar:  Every once in awhile he -- at least I think it was him -- would start mumbling quietly when someone else was trying to talk, like nonsense syllables or something under his breath, and Norm would simply stop and the air would go dead.  Some really weird moments.

Bright spot:  David Moore.

I miss Junior Miller's capsule bios of the players following their selection.  Little jewels of reportage and wit.

Draft coverage should be Norm, Bob, and one or the other David (Newbury or Moore).  Whether they're all in the same room or divided up between the draft venue, Valley Ranch, and Victory Park, you'd just have a cleaner, livelier, and more informative show.

  1. Corby's main contribution was his reaction to the Cowboys not taking Johnny F. It made the promo.

  2. I'm not sure if it's a byproduct of your admittedly restricted listening time each week, but to my ears the draft was every bit as hyped as it has been in years past.

I think Bob just having returned from a London/soccer whirlwind vacation had to have something to do with him (as you rightly point out) seeming neither as prepared nor as invested in it as years past.

As far as Norm goes: look, the guy is about to turn 70. He's been slipping more and more over the last few years. It's becoming more noticeable. It occurs on a more frequent basis. And as we've seen in this year's draft coverage, it happens when Norm ought to be/usually is at his best. Today, about two hours into the draft, he started getting silly. The kind of silly that at one time would have caused (and did in Rhyner's case) Norm to lose his s*** on air and throw the person off. It was obvious his co-hosts were taken a bit back by his behavior. Specially at such an early stage in the day's coverage. After round two (last night), Norm seemed to become somewhat disinterested. Bottom line is, he's getting older. It appears his zeal, or at least the sustaining of said zeal for extended periods, is not what it once was. That's to be expected. But I do have to wonder if the Cat and/or Dan Bennett are thinking "yeah, it might be time to do this from the studio or even make a big live remote out of it. Eh, the magic and the effort put into it by its proprietor and advocate (Norm) isn't what it once was, and fiscal times are tough here in Dickey Bros. Land," I do wonder. . .

Donovan has been solid. You can tell he's really sharpened his game.

David Moore, when he's gently reminded that he doesn't work for the Cowboys and is therefore free to actually express his real opinion, is great.

David Newbury IS what Norm used to be vis-a-vis the draft. He has Norm's passion and Goose's ability to cut through the b.s. and tell it like it is.

I appreciate and enjoy the draft coverage. In truth, I don't understand why Norm needs to be in NYC. What with technology the way it is. It isn't as if he's getting hot tips and inside info like he used to. There was a time when that would happen, and we here in Dallas would know before anyone else in the country that so and so was about to be picked by team x. It was pretty cool. Those days are long gone now. I guess it's an expensive tip of the hat/perk for a radio hall of famer. Who knows, maybe it's written into his contract.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I wouldn't be surprised if Norm included in his contract negotiations a clause requiring the station to send him to NY for the draft every year.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Bob tweeted that he was going to try and keep draft coverage 80% about the Cowboys. So I think whenever Norm went off on the Jaguars secondary needs or somesuch his silence or disengagement was meant to not keep that conversation going.

  6. A big shout out to Sean Bass for ruining 4 hours of recorded soccer games for me. The guy could give a rip about soccer, but feels the need to show his sports bona fides by tossing out that Man City won the Premiership at the end of TSJ. The fact he did it shows he doesn't follow the game. The games on on early and most people record them and watch them later in the morning/early afternoon. Anyone who follows it, knows this. Again. Thanks, Sean.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You've got to be kidding. The games were on at the shockingly early time of 9am Central time. If you cared that much you certainly were watching live rather than listening to TSJ.

So I make a comment about Sean Bass, get slammed for it, rebut without using a curse word, and stating the obvious about why people dvr something because I'm being slammed by people who also dvr stuff for the same reason but just want to be "get over it/on the right side of the issue" type of "pragmatic thinking" people… I get my comment deleted.

No wonder this place is getting more GIML by the comment.

  16. I didn't feel like the 'ramp up' was any different than previous years and I've never been a P1 of listening to the draft once it starts. It does seem akward though to have a crew in NYC, at the station and at Valley Ranch. The little bit I did hear sounded somewhat akward as no one quite knew when it was their turn to talk.

I was getting ready today to comment on the same issue. It must be difficult to know when one is talking and one is finished.

Fan's coverage was great. Broaddus is a huge add to the event. KT, Jeff Cavanaugh and he really put the film work in. Impressive. Fan just seemed so much more informed. Although I do appreciate KTCK adding a lead dog like Corby to the fold.

  27. This is a little off topic, but is anyone else freaked out when Rhynes does live-spots for a technology company? He seems very out of his element when he's reading the copy word-for-word for a certain ISP (I can't remember which one exactly). When he starts spouting megabits/second and other techo-jargon, I feel this would have been better read by a younger person that probably understands better what he's reading.

  29. Unless they're shilling for Hooters, whiskey or sandwiches, they're pretty much fish out of water. Do you think Norm knows or cares anything about home theater or where you get your energy in this world today? Do you think Corby or Danny know or care anything about BWM or Audi? Do you think any of them know or care anything about flowers, pajamas or berries? If you look at live spots objectively, it's ridiculous to have any of these guys trying to sell most of this stuff, but they do what they're paid to do and read what's written for them.

  31. Dan mentioned something yesterday or the day before that I thought was an interesting nugget. Bob mentioned something about the book "Collision Low Crossers", which was written by a guy they had on, Nicholas Dawidoff. At the time they had him on it seemed relevant and it didn't stick out as being out of place. But when Bob mentioned the book again this week, Dan said something like this:

"Oh yeah, that was the guy we had to have on in order to get Denis Leary as a guest."

I'm sure this goes on all the time with agents/representatives offering a bigger name if shows will also put on a smaller name, but it was just interesting to hear some inside-baseball on how bookings sometimes come about.

  33. Did anyone hear Bob confirm that L4G is in fact from Cleveland? He did, and Dan went silent for an instant then moved on. I know that it's been pretty much confirmed that L4G is a Cleveland chum of Dan's, but still, to hear confirmed what was once top secret is something that doesn't happen everyday. The old curtain is not pulled back like for us P1s like it used to be.

While I'm not sure as to why the (what appears to be the same) Anon(s) who keeps making "The FAN is now doing this, this show is doing that, and how in general awesome The FAN is/is becoming, I kind of like it. (After all, this is MTC, not MFC--sorry Anon/s, you aren't going to convert anyone here.) It reminds me of the old days in radio when competing stations and their listeners would go at each other, commit acts of sabotage, and have a general dislike for each other. Kind of like that old WKRP episode where the WPIG pig and the WKRP carp had a set-to in the mens room! Good times, IMHO.

The Dennis Leary thing brings to mind an old buddy who used to book bands for a smallish venue back in the mid-late 90s. Often times when he'd try to pull in a bigger act, their management would say "OK, but I have an no-name, new band on my roster that I'm going to need to you book for a show, as well." The sort of thing BAD had to go through to get Leary is common.

We didn't have the perfect sizes in the Baby Reuben's, but I think we had everything else. I wish I could listen to the their sports talk show in Chicago; Brady explained how to listen to them via the internet , but so far I haven't been able to figure it out. Do you remember the road trip last year for THL up to Chicago? Do you also recall Mike mentioning meeting an old guy at the Ale House? That is the guy. Bruce Cameron Elliott, Geriatric Genius.

    ReplyDelete
  49. KT, if The Chicken has long breaks, it's only because The FART, despite being home to the Cowboys and NASCAR and having CBS deep pockets, can't garner the amount of advertisers The Ticket can. If it could, it would, and thus the breaks would be longer. 'Preciate your enthusiasm and openness, but c'mon, pal.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Anon 10:20
Oh how WRONG you are. It has nothing to do with the amount of advertisers each station has. If you read the reports, the difference is marginal at best. However, KTCK advertisers do PAY more. The reason KTCK has long breaks is because the shows do not give two **** about respecting Cat and running their clock correctly. There's no recourse for them blabbing on and going off on wild tangents, and being late, so they do it continually. KTCK is always making up for lost time, that is why their breaks are so long. Additionally, Cumulus is always behind the 8 ball b/c of their debt, so they are constantly trying to fit more spots at lower $ into breaks. Thus, you have your longer breaks. The classroom is always open.

Troll who works at The FAIL, time is time is time is time. If Corbles blabbers on an additional segment's worth of blabbering, then the break might seem longer but then so to does the content seem longer. They have x amount of hours to fill in the paid for adverts, chief. They have x amount of ads. How they fit them in, well, there's the EZ puzzle and then the challenging one. Most shows choose the latter. Regardless the amount of actual on air content and ads are the same. It might FEEL or SEEM like there's less on air content. But that's only your senses FAILING you, playing tricks on you. Basic concept of time. Your classroom FAILS its students, like your employer and coworkers do their minuscule amounts of listeners. Got it, turbo? Good.

Since you do it over and again, and still, we fools refuse, are unable, to learn from your seat of wisdom, what does this say about you, Sage? It says a lot. None of it too flattering.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Cactus, I do not hear from FAN guys. I get very few emails even from Confessors.

On the subject of FAN people, I don't find the sometimes obvious boosterism in the comments all that troublesome. So someone likes the FAN, or works there, so what? They're pretty easy to spot, never insulting (unlike some Confessors) and, as noted, KT lets his FAN flag fly. He's in there slugging for his employer, and he's proud of it, and he doesn't overdo it. OK with me.

I feel bad that I haven't gotten around to reviewing Ben & Skin (I never listen to any of the other shows). I need to set aside a couple of weeks and give that showgram a fair shot.

In the meantime, looks like I need to defend my Cowlishaw & Mosely listening. I've trended back to The Hardline lately, and really got a kick out of Cat's Nelson memories today -- not so much the breast-measurement story, but the behind-the-scenes grabass-fest in the charity pavilion (forget its actual name).

    ReplyDelete
  56. I can address a few things here. As far as the commercial breaks, although i'm not aware of the specific data, it has to do with the way the program director sets the clocks.

The Fan is set to have shorter segments/shorter breaks while the Ticket is set to have longer segments/longer breaks.

Personally, The Ticket's clock fits my style of doing radio better, but it also makes general sports segments very easy to cruise through.

As far as the term Fan Fan…i've never used it…and never will. I think it's bad and kind of a byproduct of whatever The Fan used to be. I'm not here begging people to listen or anything, i'm just saying the station is different than what it was. When I worked at the ticket, never once did I hear anybody (online or in person) say they were starting to listen to The Fan a little bit, and that's starting to happen a little bit now. Nothing earth shattering or anything, but it's a start. This is a long con, otherwise I wouldn't have left The Ticket. You don't have to believe me, that's cool, but swing on by during the 7 minute 1310 commercials! Take care. Bewm.

    ReplyDelete
  57. And just to be clear. The Ticket is 3 segments an hour while The Fan is 4 segments an hour.

Again, no data here to support me, but I'm guessing each station is about 40 minutes content-15 Spots-5 Promos/Tickers/Flashes

It also depends on day part as AM and PM drive usually have more commercials.

  63. So the thing is, that the content/commercial stuff really does differ per station, and the ticket REALLY does have more commercials, less content. Regardless of who pays more or has more ads, or who's content is better, or how the clock is structured, there is an actual report for this stuff, and it does differ, quite a bit.

Human activity affects the environment in many ways and it would be surprising if they do not affect climate. The scientific debate on how much it does so is much livelier than the United Nations and the Obama Administration would care to acknowledge. The debate is ongoing. It certainly is not at the point where massive changes in political and industrial policy are called for.

Last week he asked Seabass to do some quick research for him over the air. Boy, you could hear the steam coming from Sean's ears. He also butted in during birthdays to make sure Gordo read his (Joe's) mother's before Gordo got to it. Gordo's tone was one that said "put out and put off," to say the least. Not sure when "this Joe" came about, but I hope it goes back to where it came from.

Loved today's THL. That was the lineup I was hoping we'd get after GW was fired. Don't know if anyone remembers, but Cat inadvertently sent out en masse an email that seemed intended for a selected focus group asking who the group would like to see as the new 3rd HL host. Myself and many others chose Followill. When I hear presentations like today's, it makes me wish that would've happened. Obviously it can't, what with Mark's Mavs gig. Still, a P1 can dream. I think the most likely reasons for his termination are fairly evident. Personally, I'm not going go that direction. I think TC has been bar stool psychoanalyzed to death in these com boxes, as it is. No need for, at least on my part, any further waxing in that direction. I do wonder if there is a place for him back at The Ticket? The semi scorched earth way in which he left probably means "no." But you never do know.

I guess Pman's TC prediction might be off in the future. I also wonder if one Joe Letsche is doing a little schadenfreude two step right about now? Seeing how TC actually named his name where Ticket a holes are concerned.

Good luck to you, TC. I hope you land another gig, soon. A good one, at that.

  84. The TC saga sounds like a good subject for a new post. Predictions? I think either Financial Analyst, a replacement for Joe Letsche on Norm's show, or a KT type person on the Fan. Or maybe TC and Jake will take IJB over to the Fan and replace K and C Masterpiece

  85. You know, Corby (the THL in general) are pretty loose with their pot talk. I'm not the narc type but it IS illegal. Therefore, I believe it shouldn't be talked about in the terms it is while on the air. When they discussed the text messages they received for Followill to fill in they basically said Corby was baked. Things like that shouldn't make it to the air. Corby and Danny set the tone for that show and it's not a good one. I would be so game for Mike to have some mature hosts to do a show with. It's wasting his on air talent...just wasting away.

  87. Agree T4,
Even if it were legal in TX, Cumulus could decide the activity isn't consistent with their corporate standards.
