BREAKING BREAKING BREAKING: Not a Meh -- SEE UPDATES

Let me stress that none of my industry-rumble sources have told me anything definite, no names, no details on the announcement, but they are saying that what is likely to go down on The Norm Hitzges Show today is not going to be your typical "big station announcement" that turns out to be someone getting his headphones repaired or the first ever Guy's Night Out in Forney or something like that.

I have heard Greg "the Hammer" "Greggo" Williams mentioned, but NOT, repeat NOT, as a guy who is coming back to The Ticket.   But perhaps to suggest that this may be .  .  .  a co-host-related announcement.

Which we can all guess about and some of you already have.

Let's just say that formal Monday-through-Friday hosting changes don't happen very often, so if you're a Ticket history guy, today might be a day to tune in to Norm.

In the alternative, they may be announcing that George Dunham has finally learned how to pronounce Norm's name.

And, of course -- my C.I. may be blowing radioactive steam up my ass.

But I'll be tuning in.

With ass firmly held on to.

UPDATE:  Junior just reported that Norm would be making the announcement at noon "in conjunction with BaD Radio."  Now that's intriguing.

UPDATE:   Dare we say it?  "NaD."

UPDATE:  Yes, it's "NaD Radio"

Here's the official release:

August 28, 2015
For Immediate Release

Cumulus Media Dallas and The Ticket; Sportsradio 1310 and 96.7 FM announced today that a new show will debut on the station beginning Monday, August 31, 2015 at 10am.

Texas Radio Hall of Famer and long-time Ticket sports talk host Norm Hitzges will be joined by another long time Ticket personality Donovan Lewis, as the two team up as co-hosts of the new show airing weekdays from 10am-12n.

Hitzges and Lewis already have quite a bit of experience working together as the duo has hosted The Ticket’s Cowboys Postgame Show for the past seven seasons. They will continue to co host that program again during this season.

Lewis has been at The Ticket since 2006, the majority of that time as sidekick on the BaD Radio Show with Bob Sturm and Donovan Lewis. He has been with this group of radio stations under various ownership groups since 1993.

Hitzges just celebrated his 40th anniversary of continuous on air broadcasting in the Dallas Ft Worth market, all in the sports talk format. He has been at The Ticket since 2000.

Sportsradio 1310 & 96.7 FM The Ticket is Dallas Ft Worth’s first all sports radio station, having debuted on air January 24, 1994. It is the current market leader in the format among all male listeners aged 25-54.

  1. FIGHT NIGHT DETOUR: As he does every single year, Junior reported that last night was the "greatest Fight Night ever." Maybe. This site is not a friend of Fight Night, but I heard maybe an hour of it. I will say this -- that was the biggest collection of damaged souls they have ever collected for this thing. Wow.

  2. Donnie? He's kind of getting drowned out now on BaD. He and Norm have decent chemistry. I imagine "co-host" would be in name only, because I can't see Norm giving up half of his control.

    ReplyDelete
  3. One of the liners this morning said to "hold on to your butt" for the announcement at noon. Intriguing indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Just heard Musers promote it as "Norm has a big announcement with BAD radio" (or something along those lines). Maybe Donnie is going to become Norm's co-host? I would enjoy that.

Only other thing I can think is a promotion for Sirois, which I'd also enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I thought it was interesting that one of the promos this morning for today's 12:00pm announcement was Conrad saying "Hold onto your butts".

  6. Reduce the number of voices cluttering BaD Radio, and create NaD Radio -- surely, someone will call it that, let's hope not for long -- which would represent a pairing that people have liked in the past, elevating a distinctive voice at the station, and, in all likelihood, illustrating the shape of things to come.

If rumblings prove accurate, it's another solid personnel move for The Ticket.

Although . . . if true, will this improve BaD? Or make more room for voices some claim to hear too much of already? (I'm not one of those claimants who dislikes those voices, but they do give us an earful here at MTC.)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'd be very excited for Donovan pairing up with Norm. I love what Donnie brings to BaDD radio, but there are a lot of voices from 12-3. He's a good glue guy and his fill-in work has always been enjoyable. I think having him with Sirois could help balance the scales with Norm and the show might feel a bit more like the rest of the ticket lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Whoa, what kind of sign by Georgio was that, "We will see you sometime next week" I dont recall him ever saying that before

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think it would be a great career move for Donnie and I'd be happy for him. That being said, doesn't address the major problem mid days and it wont improve BaD ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm not a big Donovan fan but he has good chemistry with Norm. It would definitely be an intriguing pairing. I also think it would be good to streamline BaDD Radio. Now if they can also axe Dan and replace him with Jake as co-host that would be a huge upgrade.

  11. @954a:

"I think having him with Sirois could help balance the scales with Norm and the show might feel a bit more like the rest of the ticket lineup."

While not everyone loves Norm, one of the good things about him is that he is NOT like every other show - and that is a good thing.

That said, Donnie moving to Norm's show is a good thing (way way way way way way way better than Mike becoming the co-host imho)

    ReplyDelete
  12. My guess, Sirois with Donovan or Jake for 10-12pm. Norm would have the Dale Hanson treatment, Monday and Friday 12-1pm, or 9-10am.
My dream, bring "The Throwdown" back, with Davey producing, and move T.C. to overnights.

If anyone listens to IJB, they know what T.C.'s thought process is to achieving success in any business, stab others in the back, discuss others pay, mention how little T.C. gets paid, and how he should have his own show, without putting in the 10k hours. He should do a overnight show about cakes and video games, that's what he's good at.

Plainsman, I would like to see a thread of, "possible" Ticket line-ups, with commenters input.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If its Donnie moving to Norm, that would also be a good Donnie/Mike pairing when Norm is out and a potential full-time replacement when Norm retires.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Listening to Norm for the first time in a while and he's giving odds on pre season football. Seriously? Time for Norm to call the Sante Center to find out if his addiction is treatable.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm excited for Donny. While he can be an over-laugher I'm happy for him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Is this in effect less Donnie Doo? Sure it is a promotion, but less air time. Me no likey! BaD radio just got worse IMO.

WOW! The great Dongavan is joining Norman in the mornings...hold on to our proverbial butts was correct for once. I love it, big fan of Donavon and Norman.

    ReplyDelete
  18. NaD is a good move -- their partnership on Cowboys post game is solid... And for Donnie, he gets to go to a higher rated show - as much as it pains me to say as huge BaD Radio P1. Also, although I like Donnie, his very generic sports points are more compatible with Norm than with Bob and Jake. Donnie is much more "everyman" than analytic -- and I am not saying that is a bad thing for sports talk, but not really my preference.

I think this changes my theory of TSJ as taking over for Norm -- now the speculation must begin for who will join Donnie 2-5 years from now...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Prepare to see Bad Radio ratings drop even more. They've forced Donnie out to obviously make more room for their 2 little buddies. Has any show had more turnover than Bad Radio? These guys must be impossible to work with.

Happy for Donnie. He has something and he and Norm together make a pretty good team. He was the only reason I occasionally listened from 12-3. Will probably listen even less now.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Donovan moving from BaDD radio to Norm.

    My guess is:

    1) Norm is gonna retire in the next 2-5 years
    2) A potential option was a Sirois + Donnie pairing when #1 happens
    3) Cat didn't want to lose Jake to The Fan or elsewhere and feared that might be a real risk
    4) Moving Donnie was an initial step to sort of pre-empt #3, whether it was to make 'room' for Jake in the 12-3pm spot or elsewhere, a shift was necessary if Jake wasn't going to fit in the 10-noon slot.

    Whatchu guys think?

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's great for Donnie. And it's great for Norm. I'll miss the chemistry Donnie adds to Bob and Dan. But it's great for KTCK.

Having said that, I'm concerned. I don't want to perpetuate a tired subject, but the void created by Donnie's departure will likely be filled by more of someone I wish knew how to turn his mic off or try Florida again (no disrespect).

    ReplyDelete
  22. Congrats, Donovan, as you get five less hours of work a week to work with and listen to TC.

ATXp1, your points are sound regarding the future, especially 1,2 &4, yet it still does not mask the fact of the unpreparedness of the shows from Noon-7PM.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Need Machine to get a bump up now. He's an interesting prospect.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I concur with the sentiment that Bob and Dans ratings will continue to decline. Good change for the station overall though and congratulations to Donovan who has worked his ass off and never seems to complain. A certain ticker man could learn a valuable lesson from Donovan, but the same can be said for all of the younger guys at the station.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's good for Donnie, great for Norm's show and I agree that it's probably bad for BaD. Jake has been a net positive for the show, but he's not Donnie.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Congrats to Donnie. Hard work paid off.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Someone was so very eager to continuously chime in all show.

    It's over BaD Radio.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1. @Unknown You do know that Machine just "officially" got a permanent show, don't you?

    2. Why do some of you feel that BaD is going to suffer from Donnie's departure? Is it because Jake and (more so for a lot of you) TC will have one less voice to compete with for even more airtime? That that will only serve to bring about even lower ratings? Or is there another reason?

    3. I think this move shows that, yes, the ratings are not seen as a temporary, explained away phenomenon, but rather they are seen as a real challenge, and thus are beginning to cause changes to the mainstay, weekday lineup. I have a feeling that this alteration isn't the last one, if, say, a certain PM drive show's ratings keep going the way they appear to be going. Perhaps not now, perhaps not even in the near future, but the precedent has now been set: changes can and will be made when deemed necessary, no one is untouchable.

    4. I honestly believe this will make not one bit of difference in the ratings--positively or negatively. There MIGHT be a slight bump from 10-12 this next period, but only out of listener curiosity. Other than that, I don't see why they would. Unless. . . and it's a big "unless". . . a return to the old school BaD creates magic--which I highly doubt. Of course the obvious questions is, why did Cat feel the need to make BaD, BaDD, in the first place? There must've been something amiss for him to force a third party into the show, no (?). If so, why would it work better this time around? My feeling is that Cat thinks Jake is going to be the proxy third wheel, and inject a different vibe; one that jibes both with Bob's sports geekiness, and Dan's socio-political sensibilities--thereby bumping up BaD's listenership, and thus numbers.

    5. While I enjoy Norm and Donnie's Cowboys postgame pairing, I'm not sure if a daily dose of it will go down well. Norm's invented narratives, concern trolling (h/t cactus flinthead) in relation to said invented narratives, infatuation with giving advice to Twitter trolls, and bizarre need to claim he's not criticizing when that's exactly what he's doing. . . .coupled with Donnie's barstool sports observations that he makes over and again. . . just not sure how that's going to play out on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis.

    6. Does this mean they'll still handle Cowboys postgame duties? Or will someone take Donnie's place (you know damn well Norm won't give it up).

    ReplyDelete
  29. First, sorry for the headache I likely caused you last week Pman.

Second, I'm really excited about this. I love Donny's bit. He is a local Dallas guy who grew up much closer to the same time as me compared to Rhyner but doesn't have the large head of I went to TCU corby. Dispite our racial difference I find Dinny extremely relatable and likable.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well said. He is very likeable and is a good dude. I've had a couple of chances to meet him and he is very approachable.

      Delete
  30. If Cat Man of the Americas made this move to keep Jake from leaving then he's made a huge mistake. The guy adds NOTHING. He quotes stats and throws out ridiculous opinions to be edgy. He would fit in great at The Fan given he has about the same amount of talent as the clowns on that station.

Countdown clock has started on Bad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @birq: 100% guhgree. I'm a fan of Jake-Z, but The Great Donovan brought something great to BaDD Radio (now BaD) that will now definitely be missing.

I became a P1 in 2006 right around the time when Donovan joined the station and he has always been my favorite host. It is definitely great news for him and I hope he gets a nice pay bump in the process. Currently I only listen to the few podcast clips of Norm's show that the station deems worthy to post on iTunes, but starting Monday I will be recording "NaD" and likely listening to the show in its entirety after work (assuming usave.it worked correctly that day).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Man, "anonymous" thinks our show will be dead soon. Given "anonymous'" track record, I don't know how to feel about that. See you guys Monday and Donnie is going to be great with even more airtime and voice. We are all happy for him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Unpreparedness of BaD Radio? That is crazy talk. BaD is easily the most-prepped show on the Ticket. Not even close.

    ReplyDelete
  34. LeeRoy Jordan sounds uncomfortably like Microphone Johnson.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If this is the official Cumulus release, I'm sure Dan is pissed.
"Lewis has been at The Ticket since 2006, the majority of that time as sidekick on the BaD Radio Show with Bob Sturm and Donovan Lewis."
    Simple typo, but still.

When Norm was paired with Leon Simon at KLIF back in the day it did add a different dynamic to Norm's presentation. If Leon thought Norm was full of BS on something he had no fear of calling him on it. We will see if Donny is as capable of sawing the legs off of Norm's high horse when needed.

Congratulations to Donnie, well done Sir, well done.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So "non-political" Corby decides to twist off on Sarah Palin and calls her a skank. Very classy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. A big day for The Ticket and for the site. Glad I was at least on the right track for a change. I had the definitive news mid-morning and tried to strike a balance between a tease and stealing Norm's and Donovan's thunder.

Appreciate the numerous gracious congratulatory best wishes to Donovan. It looks like the Norm/Donovan piece of this, at least, was almost unanimously well-received.

Unlike some, however, I think this will benefit BaD as well. There were too many voices competing to be heard. It will be interesting to see how Jake's and T.C.'s air time is going to be regulated (or not) in the weeks ahead. I'm guessing that Dan will be asked to bring greater substance to the show, with Jake and T.C. not contributing any more than they do now. Just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was funny to hear the jockeying for which bits belong to which show.

    ReplyDelete
  39. this is what happens when you allow your product to become stale due to winning over Trash Horse competition.
now a little competition from 105.3 and BAD radio makes a change to prevent the inevitable last place.
Donnie wasn't the problem, but he can't assist on Apple product issues so.
    Welp, see ya later!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Not sure how removing the best component of BADD will help BAD. BADJ radio does have a nice ring to it, however.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Not to de-rail the subject matter at hand but I just wasted 20 minutes of my life on this and it was funny! There are other parodies but I have not clicked on them yet.

  44. Donnie's first day in his new gig and his lead in is TSJ instead of the Musers? Not a good way to start the new era, IMHO. Where the heck are the Musers this morning?

    ReplyDelete
  45. all hosts and minions are mum on the topic. their absence was not teased last wk nor over the weekend by anyone on the wknd shows.
    more changes are the way.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Donavon gets a headline gig... or at least 50% of one.... good move.

Less Sirios with a 3rd voice in the booth. No biggie there.

More space in the booth with BaD radio... more Jake... that's a good thing. I see Jake to be a bigger piece in the future. Opinionated voice with relatively good takes.

TC solid on tickers.... all good and with a little more voice space from 12-3. Good for him.

I doubt any bump in ratings any where... but gets Donnie into a headline position. While a big announcement and a domino effect, no major change other than to get Donavan in a headline position.... good for the long haul.

Wow, very impressed with how much better Norm is with Donnie as a co-host. (I don't listen to the Cowboys post game.)

I originally thought this move was to get Donnie into a co-host role, with the intention of having him and Sirois's Boom in Da House take over the 10-noon slot when Norm's contract ends, but now I can imagine Norm staying on the air long into the future.

I had stopped listening to Norm's show not because of his content, but because of the lip smacks and old man noises he would make when he had to to 100% of the talking. Now that he only has to do half of the talking, he hasn't made a single off-putting Norm noise.

I hope they will find a way to get Sirois in the mix more as time passes, as he is also great with both Norm and Donnie.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In the DMN article about NaD Radio, this quote stuck out to me:

"Catlin added that the move was not triggered by sports talk ratings in the market."

You gotta be kidding me. He insulted our intelligence with his Q&A here, and now he's doing it in print.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Strange for the Musers to all three be out for two days this week. Could be nothing.

Just listened to The Invasion of Norm and D, and I gotta say, not bad! A few kinks to work out, but overall an enjoyable listen.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I listened to NaD radio, and it sounded like Norm had a lot more energy. With Donnie there, Norm has a immediate response for a answer to his question/point, not awkward dead silence, due to the question not being directed at any one person.

BaD should get a ratings uptick, while drafting off NaD. If BaD can decrease the: pot talk, Dan's "what does that mean", and listen to TC grind his gears, trying to get a "Yuk-Monkey/Third Chair" selection. TC trying to jump Jake, in more air time.
I don't see a third being added for some time.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thought I left the Unticket running on shake joint this morning... Had to go back and listen to the end of the Musers show last Friday. George ended it with "We'll talk to you again some time next week".. Odd

Always been a big fan of Donnie. Loved today's show.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Whatever hthe motivation was, good on Cat for making it. NaD, even on its first day, was a marked improvement in the 10-12 spot. Hopefully Norm's Birdhouse will no longer be a part of the show. If this is going to be BaD going forward, winner winner chicken dinner. As long as Jake and T.C. are kept in check, this is a welcome change. We know have two hosts who BOTH can actually get their thoughts across.

But seriously, Cat, do you think your listening audience and Barry Horn really buys your this isn't about ratings b.s.? No one does, dude. So just stop it. Tell it like it is. I thought you were a metal guy? B.s.ing is very unmetal. Fooling no one, chief.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dunham and Miller aren't going anywhere. Pay attention to the wording I used..........

    ReplyDelete
  54. BREAKING: Musers' absence today and tomorrow not mysterious or related to any big news. Which is not to say that there isn't big news in the offing, as some have claimed -- only that today's and tomorrow's days off are pretty much just that and not attached to anything noteworthy.

BREAKING: I heard a rumble from someone who usually gets this stuff pretty right that The Fan -- G-Bag in particular -- is about to take a ratings hit. I say "about to," but for all I know the numbers are already out. I'm plowing the south 40 and don't have time to check the electric computer. Link me if you got 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I still think that is odd that ALL of the Musers are gone at once?!? The HOTYB guy/girl suggest that Gordon is departing?!? Still seems like something is up. (Ive often wondered why the Musers weren't syndicated on a regional level)

So you say that rumor is that G-Bag is about to take a hit? HMMMMMM, lets see. Do you have inside word that TC and Jake have been hired by The Fan?!? That WOULD make sense!

Cat is making moves to "stop the bleeding", I don't care what is put out there. I also think he has big plans for Jake (BaD needs a yuk monkey)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Do you dare disrespect MTC's famous BREAKING designation? Actually, I guess I invite it by being uncertain of my sources. This one, however, had the ring of truth. As far as the Musers are concerned, nothing to see here.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I assumed the absence of the Musers was due to some over-scheduling. Just got back from California, remotes like Gordo's shooting event and Fight Night . . . maybe they just wanted a chance to catch their breath.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Will the Musers be on the air on Labor Day? If so it could be a simple corporate, "holiday" to make up for them working next week. My company does it with some employees they need in the office on Holidays, sometimes if no one volunteers, they can even get two regular days off for the price of workin one holiday.

    ReplyDelete
  59. "off-putting Norm noise"

Thank you for the giggle, Warren.

    ReplyDelete
  60. For Plainsman to say that someone told him the ratings is strange considering the monthly #s don't come out until the middle of the month. He could have got weekly numbers, but that'd have to come from a program director or someone on the inside.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Gordo isn't going anywhere, folks.

    ReplyDelete
  62. When I hear "ratings hit," that sounds like a MAJOR drop in a SHORT period of time. Given AM ratings move so slowly/gradually over time (at least that I understand), the only thing I can attribute to Gbag taking a "ratings hit" would be previous miscalculations or bad numbers in some fashion.

Plainsman, is your source telling you why Gbag would fall? Not that I care much about the show, but I would listen a lot more if Chris Arnold was reported permanently missing.

    ReplyDelete
  63. blergoyen and 1106: I get tidbits from hither and yon. I try to convey my view of credibility. Some sources seem very solid, others more suspect. I wondered about that ratings tidbit, too, since usually someone comments right away when there's news out about the latest book. So I don't know how "inside" my source is with respect to ratings, or what a "hit" means, or any analysis of the (supposed) numbers.

My little gossipy stuff should be taken as just that. I pass it along if it seems possible/credible, leave it in the inbox if it doesn't. But even if I pass it along, it's still only scuttlebutt.

The Musers news -- that the days off are just days off -- seems very sound, heard it now from several sources.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The only problem was George's awkward dismount with no mention of them being out. When does that ever happen?

    ReplyDelete
  65. From Craig Tuesday morning: "The Musers are not in rehab, nor in a contract dispute. We had two vacation days to burn before football season. We're back Wed #settledown"

    ReplyDelete
  66. Junior tweets: The Musers are not in rehab, nor in a contract dispute. We had two vacation days to burn before football season. We're back Wed #settledown

    ReplyDelete
  67. Those of you relaying Junez' tweet, I'm not buying it. Somebody in this thread said that George last week said "sometime next week", and other than that nothing's been said about it at all (save for Junez' tweet). I think that something else is/was going on, but they're taking the position that they don't owe us an explanation (which they don't, of course). We will probably never know.

I could certainly be wrong, but it costs them nothing to tell us they'll be on vaycay for two days BEFORE signing off on Friday. Come on, son.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I know it's fun to speculate and all, but let's be realistic here. This is the PERFECT time for the Musers to take a vacation.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Tuned in from 12-3 expecting to hear bad radio and an episode of IJB broke out. Will be listening to more KXT from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  70. G-Bag's ratings hit may be the suspension or termination of its ring leader, Gavin.
face it, they lose nothing in fact, probably gain, if they lop off the toupee wearing head of CA.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Maybe Cat couldn't get it worked out until after the show Friday. Norm needed to be in his regular slot for Donovan's debut.

Maybe everyone was distracted by Norm's big announcement and they just forgot.

    Occam's Razor

    ReplyDelete
  72. I know it won't or probably can't happen, but I wouldn't mind moving Jake to Yuk Monkey and bringing back Gribble. I love me some Tom Gribble, and I would like for Jake to have more airtime. I personally like Jake. He seems to know his stuff and be up to date on topics. I also don't mind TC, although he does derail segments from time to time.

Totally digging the new show with Norm and Donnie.

    ReplyDelete
  73. After the way Dan (and sometimes Bob) treated Tom, I wouldn't imagine he has _any_ desire to work with those guys. I know I wouldn't.

I'm on record as having said that if Dan had twisted off on me the way he did Tom that one time ("TELL ME THE ANSWER GRIBBLE!") I would have been fired pretty soon after. Any respect I may have had for Dan was lost that day - and that's not the only example of them treating him like crap.

Maybe Tom is more mature/professional than I am, though.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Gibbs never really fit into The Ticket mold. His attempts to fit in (e.g., trying to be one of the guys when the soup du jour was starting a tribute band--for Gribbs, it was a Doors outfit), were almost always awkward. Scoops, being the only, and glorious, exception. But even Scoops wasn't your typical Ticket shock jock yuk monkey schtick. He fits in great with Cowlishaw and ESPN.

Three shows in, and I'm thinking some Confessors got it backwards. BaD is the show that has benefitted greatly. Not because of anything Donnie did or did not do, but rather because there are less voices rattling around. The result of which is a more cohesive show. And so far, Jake and TC have been in the background; both have for the most part let the game come to hem. Though I know that for some of you there will be no pleasing you, in that regard. On the contrary, and I know it's early days, but Norm and Donnie seem forced, cluttered. I'm rooting for their partnership to win, but I'm not sure it's going to.

  75. @1:25 I agree with you on all counts. BaD is running much smoother.

Today was the first day for me that Norm and Donnie felt like a Norm show with Donnie tagging along. It is their first week and I am sure they will get better. They need to establish a new identity instead of cramming Norm and Donnie bits together.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Short term, I can see how you would say that 1:25. However, Donnie brought a lot to BaD radio, can Jake and TC make up for that? I don't think so. BaD had too many voices but they removed the wrong one.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I realized one drawback to the Norm/Donovan show: is this the end of the 10-noon solo shift for White Elephant Day?? I always looked forward to listening to a host twist and stammer on air because he's used to having co-hosts to lean on. No one could do it like Norm.

Luckily that's the only drawback I can think of! Happy for Donnie.

  78. Is it just me or has the 8:40 bit on the Musers become spare? It was once can't miss radio for me but nowadays so many characters sound just the same and very little of it is actually ever funny.

  79. @3:38 PM

    Perhaps it is you.

I look forward to 8:40 AM every day the Courage Boys are on the air.

One never knows what character may appear.

Randy Cody sounds like every contractor I have been around, and I have been around a lot of them.

Spot on. They need to figure out, ASAP, how to fit in signature Norm and Donnie bits/segments together without it seeming crammed. As it is, the show has a "this is Donnie's segment, now this is Norm's" feel to it. Sirois, Norm, and Donnie need to come up with new, shared, segments. Which means that, some so-called staples might have be be jettisoned. If this is going to be a new show, then make it so. Sure, keep the pole, fantasy horse race calls, ghetto Jeopardy. Have a few Norm centric and Donnie centric segments. But on the whole, have a dialogue. There's a real opportunity here, for example, for genuine, no jokey interruptions, discourse on racial matters in sports and society. One that cannot occur on the other shows. And that's just scratching the surface.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm liking the new 10-noon, still somewhat unnamed Norm and Donnie show. But am I the only one that is uncomfortable/feel bad for Donnie in these radio spots? They make it seem like this is such a big thing for Donnie that they have to pump him up/over promote him. From Norm emphatically telling us this was his choice and not forced on him and how great Donnie will be, to others telling us what a great promotion it is for Donnie and he should be so fortunate, to Bob's somewhat condescending question to Donnie whether or not he was ready for this big promotion. Just seems strange. I listened to the announcement and know a lot of what was said was tongue-in-cheek good natured ribbing, but the way they have spliced it all together for these commercials is somewhat off-putting.

  84. I've never cared for Donovan on air much so I don't mind the move. Although I think he would be really fun to hang out with.

The only reason I hate this move is I feel like it's given TC a license to run his mouth with more uninteresting and stupid jokes/opinions. Seriously, it's been said before but how does he have a job? It only took Pensacola a month to realized he had nothing, why is the ticket so loyal?

Wanted to share this to the MTC Community, as it's on the Ticket Reddit site already.

Jake and TC did My Team Calls last year for Cowboy games, which was a live streaming alternative to the official radio broadcast/tv announcers. Long story short, MTC is not going forward, but Jake and TC are trying to fund the equivalent on their own and are trying to get some funding or sponsors if you own a local business.

    https://www.patreon.com/user?u=1011728&ty=h

I listened to about half the games, and really enjoyed it. You can hear part of their call on the Dez catch/no catch on the Bad Radio open.

    ReplyDelete
  86. TC is begging for money now. Do some of the research, like we did. Liking the Invasion.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'm certain the initialism of the My Team Calls venture is entirely coincidental.

They're doing PBP over a stream? I would think that something like that would involve hefty fees to Niffle, even assuming it were free to license what are, in effect, broadcast rights to games already licensed to Big Media. Interesting question -- people "live tweet" all the time, so streaming commentary involving a description of plays wouldn't seem to be that big a step. Interesting times.

    ReplyDelete
  88. 1-My Teams Calls were skirting the edges of copyright laws. TC and Jake seem to wish to skirt that same line themselves. Good luck, since each of you are fairly well known locally and some of their colleagues in the business will quickly drop the dime on them.

2-Tomorrow's (Friday) THL broadcast at SMU will be an interesting 2.5 hours as Corby will be confronted by thousands of the Baylor fans he has chastised over the last three weeks as result of the Sam Ukwuachu case.

3-Bruce Gilbert was the guest on A Podcast About Sports Radio this week.

    http://aboutsportsradio.com/brucegilbert/

He did not specifically talk about his years at The Ticket, but he at the 26:28 mark to the end of the podcast, he did say something which the JVers, especially the former Pensacola Program Manager/current Ticket Host needs to take to heart. Overall, it's a decent 40 minutes.

Surprisingly, Gilbert gave out his email address AND phone number (I won't post it here) at the end of the podcast. He said that if someone leaves him a message, he would eventually get back to you

  94. DA, I will be listening to the SMU remote to see if we get an appearance of Frat Rat Corby. If you recall, while he was roasting Levi Pettit and the racist Greek system, he made sure we knew that he distanced from his fraternity while he was at TCU.

  98. Anyone notice how far less bogged down BaD has been this week? I'm thinking the Donnie move was more about BaD's ratings than either Norm's ratings or Donnie's future. Indeed, my bet is that Cat told BaD, especially Dan, to get stop constantly, purposely, sabotaging segments. Dan has seemed like a different host this week. Actually offering opinions and engaging with Bob, instead of merely trying to be a pain in the ass.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Seems like FAN operatives might be posting. Far too many it's all over but the crying for BaD comments.

    ReplyDelete
  100. 2.7 for bad radio. Those 2 extra voices really seem to be helping things.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I don't think it's those two voices (presumably, Jake + T.C.).

I hope 855 is on to something with his observation about a change in Dan. I myself have not tuned in to BaD since Donovan's move.

My issue with BaD has always been the bogdown. I like Bob a lot, and like Dan when he's serious about anything, or when he's called upon to carry a segment or a show. Too often on BaD, though, he's sniping and being sarcastic and making an unnecessary gag or setting up an exaggerated straw-man to bolster a weak argument or just be contrary. The way I've put it in the past is that too often it sounds like that show struggles to broadcast.

If Donovan's move means that Dan begins exercising some show discipline and speaks coherently to the issue before the house, then BaD will be a better show.

For the record: Although I don't listen to BaD a lot, when I do neither Jake's nor T.C.'s contributions are excessive, nor do they detract noticeably from the presentation. Even if you don't care for them much, it's inconceivable that they affect ratings. Obviously, even the handful (or fewer) of Confessors who keep bashing them here -- and I've been dumping a lot more of those lately -- are obviously still listening to the show.

So really, men and women, if you haven't forgiven T.C. for his admittedly tone-deaf departure to Florida, if you're going to continue to flay the guy give us something of substance. Personally, while he's not my favorite, I think he's upped his game and doesn't motivate me to PO.

    ReplyDelete
  102. For those pointing to Dan being more engaged this week (small sample size, I will admit), you need no more proof than the eBrake he won this morning. Dan, of all the voices on BaD, kept plowing along to make his sports point while everyone else stopped down. Might be telling, might just be a random coincidence.

    ReplyDelete
  103. @Gopher, No TC/Jake on Friday means that there will be multiple segments next week about South Bend, Chicago, and Notre Dame football. Punch out time.

Since today's THL is from 3-5:30PM (and WTDS takes up 30 minutes), when commercials are added in, there might be an 80 minutes of their show. So Corby will use a segment to talk about TCU, just to mock the SMU and Baylor fans on the Boulevard.

Sorry Plainsman, I just listened to the August 12 IJB where TC and Jake bitched about salaries in front of a live audience. I stopped 30 minutes in on their b!tch session

    F*<k them!

Both are lucky to have a job on Tuesday.
Remember that TC on his AMA said that he still did not have his Bachelor's Degree and he regretted it thus he forgets that he even starts at a lower standard for employment.

Plus, if those two is/are that pissed, then try to get those like him to unionize like his sister station, KNBR did. If you know what others in the market pay, then get another job or try to unionize. At least Jake acknowledged that he had zero idea regarding the financials, but TC seemed to know know it all since he read the James Andrew Miller's ESPN book. Plainsman, please listen to Bruce Gilbert on that podcast and you will realize that Thomas Charles Fleming has EVERY characteristic which Gilbert frowns upon. It is not the departure to Pensacola which listeners dislike, it is not only the manner, but also the BS return. He did something to cause his departure, and has yet to own up to it.

TC, YOU are hourly. TC, tells us the real story on why you were fired six weeks into your job as PD would assist the Metroplex into accepting you.

ProTip: Jake, there are thousands of people who also have a Masters Degree like you and also make a similar salary or less, but do not live in Texas thus have more taxes to pay. Get over it, get a new gig, vote to unionize, or move.

LeBatard starts on Tuesday from 9-Noon (Central). I don't even live in the Metroplex anymore, but I am now listen to Dan and Stugotz over Norm/Donovan.

  105. I know Cat said it didn't effect the ratings but I can personally say I listen to BAD radio less bc it's on in the middle of the day so, the only way I can listen is via stream and they won't make it a priority to have the stream work consistently.

  106. Preach it, DA, my man!

I too listened to that IJB pod. It's the last one I'll be listening to, btw. If they keep doing IJB, which appears to show their true personalities and feelings, it's a matter of when, not if, one or both lose their job at The Ticket. Unfortunately, their attitude is endemic vis-a-vis millenials. Not all, but many. Specially from certain backgrounds. Btw, I'm a millennial, so I speak from experience.

  107. Damn DA, that's some fire, I like it!

Hey 1:21, it's Labor Day on Mon, nothing goin on there.

  108. I guess I am missing the point of moving Donnie from BaD to Norm's show. Some have suggested that it lessens the number of voices on BaD, but it seems like Donnie actually brought a non-sportsy offering to the show. Different from Dan's. It seems like I either read on this thread (or heard it) that somehow Donnie would help 10-12 noon ratings. Why would this change? Donnie is not a younger voice. I really like Norm and Donnie-especially on their post game show. But after a week of this, it sounds to me like Norm says whatever he is going to say. There appears to be no dialogue between the two. Norm pauses and then Donnie says something. Norm's responses exist free of whatever Donnie said-it is like Donnie didn't say anything.

I don't dislike Jake and TC like others on this forum, certainly not like DA (whose posts I enjoy reading). I do agree, DA, that complaining about salary is an empty endeavor and one likely to just piss people off. I only remember others, Bob, specifically talking about a Masters degree, not Jake. It seems like that was a smart idea for Jake as a check box move for hiring purposes. What I think is happening is many listeners are just pissed that the station is different now. For example, this morning the Musers played a Rant clip where the fake lead singer for Styx called in and ended up shooting himself. I thought it was funny. The inspiration that brought that about and so much else just isn't there, anymore. Add to that guys like Jake that didn't slum it in the same way as the other on air hosts...and the dynamic changes. Jake probably has paid his dues, though, in some fashion. He still sounds like a Jim Rhome-esque guy. Not my favorite, but I do appreciate the opposing view he offers.

I predict Donnie is the next "host" to leave the station (outside of a Norm retirement). Not a sports guy...and not a real answer to the issues facing the station-a shame because he is a nice bit player. He would be wise to bail as soon as this co-hosting gig gives him opportunities elsewhere. Pragmatically speaking, this station has run its course in its current iteration. Plus, that stream issue continues to show that Cat won't address "easy" fixes that are driving listeners away. I know I don't listen nearly as much.

    ReplyDelete
  109. If I had known I was going to be taken seriously I would have asked for money.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I'm not an avid IJB listener but I do catch one from time to time. A road trip last week afforded me some catch up play on my podcasts and I heard the salary episode you guys are so up in arms about. I really didn't hear the "this is bullsh, we should be paid more" tone you guys seem to reference, but more of a self deprecating, "wow we don't make shit, what's wrong with us?" kind of thing. Then again, I like what TC brings to the table most of the time, so I don't hold the same type bias going into an IJB episode as a lot of other confessors. It also boggles my mind that some who hold so much hate for a few JV guys on a sports radio station would listen to an independent podcast hosted by them. Talk about sadistic behavior.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yeah the TC hate has gone way overboard here again. The vitriol up there is ridiculous. TC AND Jake were in no way "bitching" about how little they make. It's clear there is an agenda (whatever the hell it would be, I have no idea).

    ReplyDelete
  112. This comment has been removed by the author.

  113. Seriously, you would think Jake and TC ran over some peoples dogs or slept with their wives the way people complain about them.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Shaggy, I agree. You should see the TC/Jake comments that don't make it through. I'm not going to make any rules, but this disproportionate obsession with one guy -- two if you count Jake -- who is not a major figure at the station is becoming very wearisome. I'll be tossing comments relating to both with greater abandon.

The reason some have gotten through lately is because there was some fresh material in the form of the IJB installment, which I have not heard. But I echo the Confessor who could not conceive of why anyone with the animosity towards those two that some have would even listen to IJB.

So yeah, my editorial "delete" pen is probably going to get a more vigorous workout if this trend continues.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Yeah, I just don't get all the vitriol aimed toward TC and to some extent, Jake. It's real easy to avoid IJB: don't listen to it. I mean, shit, you have to go out of your way to listen to it, so not listening ought to be easy. As far as TC goes......look, I get it that his departing attitude/AMA and his 'nothing to see here except the guy who hired me is bad and I'm good' attitude upon his return really turned/turns some folks off. Frankly, it turned me off too. But he seems to have FINALLY learned a little something about knowing your place, letting the game come to you, and even a tad of humility. His on air presence is exaggerated to the nth by some of you. It's ridiculous. AND. I listened to the supposedly heinous IJB, just this morning. With all due respect to DA (whose comments I usually find interesting and thought provoking) and a few others, neither Jake nor TC were making such claims, sincerely. Like another commenter said, it was CLEARLY self-deprecating. As far as Jake goes....I don't agree with everything or even a lot of what he says when he leaves the sports page. And yes he's a smart, educated guy, but no he's not the genius/smartest guy in the room that some have claimed in these comboxes. But what I have seen is a guy with genuine talent, smarts, and a biting sense of humor slowly but surely begin to grow up as a broadcaster and a person. Jake does a very solid to, at times, even great job. Both in his producing and hosting. He's not perfect and he has his share of forgettable and/or regrettable moments (don't we all?). On the whole, though, he's an asset now, and I imagine he will be even more of one in the future. We're lucky to have him at The Ticket.

    ReplyDelete
  116. The weird thing about BaD radio is the show would run smoother with one of the hosts were gone. The show became bogged down too much and became a hard listen.

I disagree with most about Dan. I appreciate him going opposite of the mases from time time. I will never forget when the Broncos traded Cutler, Dan was the only one that said who the hell is Jay Cutler and what has he done. He can be really good when engaged.
