(1) Crap; (2) Cool; (3) Click

CRAP:  I was waiting for the report on the intra-Ticket contretemps involving shots at George, but as the ads were winding down someone walked into my office and closed the door to solicit my confidential wisdom on proper plains management.  So I missed almost all of it, just picked up a bit near the end.

So Justin M is taking shots at George, I guess.  I've heard some of that banter on the Monty + The Machine showgram, but I always thought it was just a bit, the pygmies nipping at the heels of the giants for laughs.

But perhaps not.  I did hear Sean report that M+M is suspended for this coming weekend.

Can anyone fill in some details?  I guess it has something to do with the e-Brake?  M+M upset about weekend shows not being nominated?  Something like that.

By the way -- Gordon's bits frequently tease Justin, not in a harsh way, but there's clearly some (what I thought was friendly) friction there.

Perhaps Justin will stop by, or maybe I'll hear from one of my network of local industry sources who know some Ticket guys  .  .  .  .

COOL:  I was proud of The Little One in The Musers' and The Hardline's handling of the Odor/Bautista incident.  Balanced, interesting.

Odor's attack was colossally stupid, if emotionally satisfying.  And we didn't get any homerism from either show.  The visceral pleasures of the encounter were honestly acknowledged, but the bad optics and bad strategy were identified with precision (which is to say, I agreed).

I did not hear Norm or Dan/Bob -- can one of you fill us in on how they saw it?  I saw some Bob tweets but I have a hard time deciphering his Twitter attitude sometimes if I'm not following his thread or paying close attention to his Tweet-tormentors.

CLICK:  I've missed me some Ticket lately because I turn off the radio -- not just turn it down, turn it completely off -- within 1.6 seconds of the beginning of that Meador "Hidden Cost Motors" ad. Meador has hugely overestimated its appeal and persuasiveness.  It's running way, way too often on The Ticket.

You hear it once, you've heard all the jokes, unclever to begin with, then you hate it every other time it appears both because it's instant boredom and it goes on for a WHOLE MINUTE and the actor sounds like Gordon after a pack of unfiltered Camels.  It's a yuk-free bit and it goes on and on.

And really, Mr. Meador General Manager Guy who comes on and asks "have you ever had that experience?", no one has sold new cars like that since -- hell, I've never had that experience with any of the many new cars I've bought.  And you telling me Meador won't try to sell you an extended warranty and shine protection?

And in all that airtime -- even the people who don't shut the damned thing off (1) don't hear the name of the dealership, and (2) don't hear the brand of cars being flogged until Mr. MGMG comes on, by which time people have already decided they will never, ever buy a car from whoever is inflicting this ad on them. The time would be better spent telling people how to spell "Meador".  (I assumed it was Medder or Metter -- never heard of it and thank Jah that Google searches phonetically.)

Meador is spending an enormous amount of money to drive people away from its dealership.

  1. I'll let Ol Monty speak for himself, but it was hinted at that he is doing a bit now. There was a heated segment where they ripped the E-brake and maybe George directly, but I have not heard it. Heck, I have complaints about the E-brake often myself, but I also know how hard it would be to know everything that happens Monday through Sunday. I couldn't tell if Sea Bass was joking or not about M+M being suspended.

  2. Given that Ol' Monty was tweeting from an airplane this morning, my guess is that it was a legitimate complaint that has now turned bit. and the suspension is the usual, 'they're on vacation, so let's crotch-kick them while they're gone' shtick.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think their show is being pre-empted for some other programming this Saturday, but I'm not sure.

The only thing that crosses my mind on the Hidden Cost Motors spot is how did they get the Fake Randy Galloway?

  4. I'll come back and explain in way more detail later today but our show is not suspended this weekend. Machine will be at Hangout Fest and I'm currently on a PHI-BAL-DC baseball trip with my brother so Ty and Eli are filling in for us anyway on Saturday. Like I said I'll explain fully how the thing with the Musers started later today but there is absolutely no friction between me and them. It was just me complaining about the E Brake for a couple of weeks that led to a bit where I took shots at them whenever I could.

  5. Like nearly anything with the ticket I just assume it's all bits and fun until someone says it's not a la Lee Corso...and I'm not kidding

  6. If there were a problem, they wouldn't be talking about it.

  7. I assumed it was a bit when I listened to Monty's George-bashing on Monty + The Machine. (He and Machine bash Cirque, too, and I'd counsel restraint on that score as well.) This morning, I was a little unsure about The Musers' side of the equation, possibly because I couldn't hear the whole thing. Junior Miller -- who, by the way, as a recent Confessor has noticed, has gradually taken over the tone of the Muser showgram -- is not someone who sits idly by while his work product is belittled, even impliedly (since eBrake is largely a George production). Taking an entire segment on a Muser showgram to spank a lower-tier Ticket broadcaster did seem a little extreme, so while I didn't really think Justin was in trouble, and I did entertain the likelihood that the "suspension" was like Bob & Dan's "suspensions," i.e., fictional, I did think that the M+M scolding, while fun, had about it the strong whiff of Junior and George remonstrating, ever so subtly -- careful, lads. You haven't earned the right to hammer a weekday host, even as a bit.

Doesn't mean there's huge tension with that segment of the JV. Just means that the Musers -- hell, let's face it, we're mostly talking The Joonze here -- are taking a few minutes of our day to remind M+M that , despite their strong start, they have many ratings books to go before they can presume to belittle the mighty Jubster, even in fun, without massive weekday daylight-hour retaliation.

And who knows what goes on in Cat's office.

  8. We all know that THL does not do very much prep; think it is a pretty much given as an opinion on this site.

That said, I wish they could have done just a little more prep when having a segment on (the great) Guy Clark. Corby did not have any insight, not knowing anything, so for once he was relegated to a side role. I will give Mike and Danny a pass that maybe what they gave was all they know. Mike had some insight on his early songwriting and Dan Paul was definitely commenting on what he read online; no personal insights.

For the lead up into the segment I was expecting more. This is one time that I thought they should have got someone else on that knew Guy Clark personally (maybe David Card from Poor David's Pub, but maybe they aren't on good terms.)(?)

Any who, if you want to experience some Guy Clark he never limited his listening. You can't download at his website but you can listen.... www.guyclark.com.

My personal favorites: Broken Hearted People; Texas 1947; the list goes on.

    STAY HARD, GUY CLARK

  9. MTC heeded?

Many thanks to Craig "Junior" Miller for his comprehensive weather forecast -- calling upon proprietary Joonze climatological modeling and certain "secret weather websites" he consults -- this morning at 5:55. Hope it becomes a feature, but this one was tied in with prospects for the Byron Nelson this coming weekend.

Frankly . . . The Ticket could get a sponsor for a regular report like that. Wonder what it would cost to just get a sponsor mention, "the weather is brought to you by My Ticket Confession" or some other local titan, Mosquito Steve, whatever.

  10. Heard the original broadcast of M+M re: the sniping at Jub and then the Musers talking about it the other day. This is what makes the LT great. Good bits. Someone mentioned that it was like puppies biting at the big dogs' heels. That point was on fleeck. My only disappointment? Monty coming on here to comment and not shortening one word. Could have said "frich" instead of "friction". C'mon.

  11. I'm about tired of the car dealerships trying to act like "family-owned" is something special. Sorry guys, to me that just means there's a good chance you have an entitled, unqualified son with a higher title and income than he deserves hanging around there and your sister-in-law is over in accounting. And a couple moron nephews in the service department. That's not going to get me there, guys. Although there are the theories that "family-owned" is code for "good Christian business."

I pretty much hate all dealership radio ads.

  12. @ Anon 1:45

You just described a dealership I know in the North Texas area (not a Ticket advertiser)

    I'm sure there are others.

  13. I highly recommend IJB this week...its a great honest talk with Bob

    ReplyDelete
  14. Boo,

If it's a TC free episode I'm in!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Is it the May 10 episode?

    ReplyDelete
  16. IJB will never have "an honest talk" as long as one of the hosts still remains quiet on why he lasted just seven weeks as PD/AM drive then PM drive voice in Pensacola. It's about the week of his two year anniversary too.

That was two years ago, and he still doesn't talk about what really occurred.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Why does it mean so much to you?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @1:26 so you won't be satisfied until you know 100% of the details of a private matter that really has nothing to do with the show they are producing? Who cares what happened in Pensacola. Jobs come and go when you're a late twenty something trying to make your way in the world. Your obsession and obvious enjoyment of bashing all things Fleming related is rather unhealthy and an enormous waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Its IJB 343. Agree with the comment this is a great show featuring Bob's world view on a lot of issues. As a centrist it was very refreshing to hear his non dogmatic view of what he would have long considered his political party and how they so overtly align themselves with Christianity yet the modern day GOP construct not only doesn't practice much in the way of any compassion discussed by Jesus but as Bob details some leaders in the party (certainly not all) are downright vicious to those who may have not had the good fortune (luck) to be born a white American into the middle class or above making most who read this board the luckiest people in the world. His point is he wishes people on both sides of the aisle would have a more nuanced view of the world - something that has hit home with him after doing numerous missionary trips to central America.
    Was a great listen.

    ReplyDelete
  20. What is your deal Anon 1:26 with TC? This obsession of why he was booted from his previous job is beyond ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, dang it. I don't see 343. Only 342.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What's the story on the video Danny tweeted out of the drunk gal slapping Corby on the head during GNO?

    Surprised it hasn't happened before.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anon 1005 - You need to go to their new podcast Network - The Blowout Podcast Network. They may be slower posting to their own channel. TC and Jake have their own Podcast network which runs 5 or 6 different shows including Machine and Siroise doing Drag and Brag and a Rangers Podcast called Boomstick amongst others

    ReplyDelete
  24. IMO it was a very disappointing GNO at least on how it sounded on radio during the roundtables. Usually they are fun but it seemed to be a race to the bottom of stupidity as the guys seemed particularly lubed up with liquor at an early hour. Very sophomoric attempt that reminded me of a Fan get-together where nothing clicks. I guess they are afforded a clunker every so often.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Corby was being Corby (nobody better interviewing girls on the wireless) and he was being goaded on by the others on the roundtable, which could be heard over the PA system. Corby left the table but was encouraged to go back. When he approached the table one of the girls slapped in on the head.

So now we have the Jose Bautista of the Little Ticket.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Corby being slapped was a memorable moment but the collective roundtables sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree on the roundtables being lackluster. I especially hated the 2nd one where Bob insisted on rehashing the Dan and Cleveland sports scene for the millionth time. I almost tuned out before that final one and I'm so glad I gave them one last chance to redeem themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  28. For some reason IJB's RSS feed is behind an episode, not sure what's up with that. I use iPhong/iTunes technologies so your mileage may vary. I know IJB/Blowout network were having some bandwidth/internet issues but I think they said it has been resolved so who knows.

And holy moly on the TC opinions, geez...TC tried an career move in his mid 20s that didn't work out, this happens, there is nothing to see there. I'm starting to understand what Jake and TC go through with this weird internet hate.

But Anon @ 7:56 nailed it. Great summary.

Even if GNO last night was bad (which I disagree) we still got more of this magical little ticket.

  29. How about a new ballpark for the Rangers folks? I for one am excited about the prospect of enjoying a summer Rangers game in 72 degree comfort. I also continue to hear people say the new park is so new. If one were to do the math and subtract 1994 (opening date) from 2021 (proposed last season in old park) one will find that the actual life of stadium will be nearly 30 years. People keep acting like it is 10 or 15 years old.

Here's the thing about TC and Pensacola--for all you Pensacola Truthers out there:

TC told the story. The story as he sees it. It's his life, not yours. You have no right to all its details. The fact that you seem obsessed with knowing everything (see: wanting there to be some unseemly or humiliating aspect to it all) says much about you. And it isn't good.

But if you Truthers must have the "unvarnished truth" bite on this: Ever think that maybe, just maybe, the reason things didn't work out was because you had an inexperienced person running a start up station who thought hiring an inexperienced (by his, TC's, own admission) person to take the helm--a hiring based on the fact that the person worked a what can be seen as a start up radio miracle, but who at that time was a low-mid tiered level employee with sparse on-air experience (sorry, podcasts are not the same as being live on-air) and zero as regards management, but hired him anyway because, hey, who knows the magic might happen for him (i.e., the inexperienced employer). Gee, no wonder things didn't work out. Yes, I know, there's nothing embarrassing or untoward concerning TC on this account--which, no doubt, disappoints you Truthers. But I'll bet the house it's a lot closer to what occurred than the Schadenfreude porn scenes that go through your collective sad-psychopathological minds.

  31. Hate to keep the T.C. conversation going, but what is being missed in this saga is that he did a little bridge-burning before he left. I think that's why some were bewildered that he was re-hired.

    ReplyDelete
  32. We have Pensacola truthers? I just thought it was people who hated his tickers and the way in which he left. Anyway, count me in the camp that GNO last night was pretty mediocre, and corby probably got what he deserved. Frankly surprised that hasn't happened to him before.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It makes me sad to see Mike Bacsik on the FSSW Rangers pre-game show. He makes one ill-advised tweet and the Ticket fires him. Meanwhile they've got a whole library of Corby's demeaning and stereotypical Mexican drops.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It was more than one tweet

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well that changes everything.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Also the Ticket did not fie Bacsik, their Corporate overlords did. Norm state on the air at the time that both he and the Catman had tried to intervene but the Corporate office would not accept any of the options they offered to save Bacsik's job.

    ReplyDelete
  37. stated not state I wish you could edit post.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes I am aware of that. But the corporate office is OK with Mexican Dracula? Cat doesn't feel like he's sending a mixed message?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I heard BaD talking about how Corby got bitch slapped, so I had to tune into THL yesterday to hear what happened. You can tell how bitter ol Corbs is by the way he calls her all the names and berates her. I liked where he said "she called us D-heads"...no Corby...she called YOU a D-head! Here's the deal people, Corby tries to be like Gordo with his little wireless bits, only difference is, he's not funny. He's rude, condescending, and finally....someone got tired of it. Gordo can pull stuff like this off...Corby can't! BTW, Gordo was cracking me up. I don't know who this women is, but she's my hero!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I will agree with you there, I'm not sure how those drops slid. I'm not a huge fan of Corby or those drops, myself. In the end I'm sure it comes down to numbers and who they think is worth the trouble they might cause and who isn't. Its the reason Kelvin Williams was cut and Michael Irvin wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ...btw, where can I see this video? It's not on Youtube yet. Can you imagine all the likes?

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was six feet away from the incident at GNO. I was with my wife and mother in-law. Everybody in the restaurant was in on Ticket schtick except for that one table--a table of women who'd had way too much red wine. Corby didn't deserve what happened. Full stop.

    ReplyDelete
  43. How have you not seen the video? It's everywhere on social media. Here's Twitter:

    Aside from the fact that she's a little bitchy . . . I might.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Corby is truly at his best with the wireless Mic interviewing unsuspecting women. Always radio gold.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LOL! It was this time for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  46. One of the things that makes the Ticket the Ticket is that most radio stations don't acknowledge when something unexpected or downright bad happens. The Ticket embraces it and makes it part of their lore.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'll admit I was being my usual jerk self, but I never thought someone would slap me down like a common yard dog!

    ReplyDelete
  48. CONFIDENTIAL TO THE CONFESSOR FORMERLY KNOWN AS 1218: There was nothing particularly objectionable or scurrilous about your post, but I tend to steer the site away from commentary about the personal lives of Ticket guys unless it has to do with a P1 encounter or something semi-public like Norm's wedding. A judgment call, and, as I say, yours wasn't offensive -- just personal and didn't give us any particular Ticket insight. Thanks for understanding.

Also took down one responsive comment.

Sorry I did not get to this sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  49. P-Man,

    Understood and no offense taken.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The Mexican Dracula drops are played on the radio to Ticket listeners. Bacsik's tweet was out there for the whole world to see on Twitter and was aimed directly at the Mexican population of San Antonio. I get that some of you don't like Corby, but these two things aren't even in the same ballpark.

    ReplyDelete

  53. Quite the cringeworthy segment this morning with the Musers being wooed by yet another model of the Trinity tollroad. Sorry fellas, this latest model is just another smoke and mirrors, bait and switch, whatever you want to call it lipstick on a pig as alternative 3c is the only approved option which is the unnecessary tollroad as we know it. If you are going to talk city politics on the show please dig a little deeper and find out just how truly broken the City of Dallas.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @9:11 I usually just try to fight through it when they interview a horse, but I was laughing out loud at Exaggerator this morning. Greatness!

    ReplyDelete

  58. The Chewbacca lady audio was annoying as hell, but I'd love to hear it enhanced with the Chancey laugh.

    ReplyDelete

So Josh Hamilton is out the rest of the season? Didn't see that coming.

  60. Well, I still haven't seen The Corby slap vid. For some reason that twitter link just goes to a photo still with no video. You can tell she's about to slap that smirk off his face though. This woman should be getting the Chewbacca lady celebrity treatment.

After hearing Danny admonish the Cowboys/Rangers for blocking public transportation to the stadiums to reap the parking income, I assume all drinks and entertainment at the Twilite Lounge are free. 65. @12:03, how so? Danny wants the Cowboys and Rangers to give up the income they generate from parking and allow public transport from Dallas to the Ballpark, so Dallas folks don't have to drive and pay to park out there. Using his logic, I assume that he does not try to maximize income at his bar and I can go in there and get some free beer if I can't afford to pay.

I pray it's out there. Would be so fascinating/cringe worthy to hear.

  76. I know it's the biggest show currently on television, but how many of you guys watch game of thrones? It amazes me that bad radio dedicates an entire segment reviewing it each week. I'm guessing at least 90% of the listening audience punches out.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't watch GOT, but it's apparently a pretty popular show, particularly with the whippersnappers. They're in the target demo. I'm not.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Long out of the Ticket prime demo but I love the show. Suspend your beliefs, get into the story and roll with it. No better or worse than Star Trek or the first season of True Detective.

    ReplyDelete
  79. This is a time-honored BaD radio segment. The Shield, Breaking Bad, GoT...it's what they do and I look forward to it every week.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think THL started a lot of the TV show talk. It dates back as far as Ally McBeal weekly talk show segment. Then you had the Soprano's talk.

  83. Dan and Bob had Joel Klatt on for a riveting segment regarding Baylor football. I couldn't turn off my radio or get out of my car! Then they went to a 15 minute commercial segment and followed up with 1:30 news and completely stopped the momentum they had built. They went from BaD radio to bad radio...

I understand radio segments, but this story is so huge today and they had so much material from Klatt to talk about and they just let it die. Not good radio today.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I hope the house cleaning is not done at Baylor. There are a lot more heads that need to roll.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Remember all the times over the past few years that Corby told us there was something "not quite right" about Briles?

    Me either.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Listening to Rhyner talk basketball is painful. He says nothing of substance, just a bunch of generalities. I know he is just trying to be a part of the conversation, but I'd rather him just sit there silent.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Is this the end of Briles career or does it just make the coaches in College Station and Austin more nervous?

    ReplyDelete
  88. @Gopher,

Briles may still face an NCAA sanction with a "show cause" penalty. Jim Tressel got a 5 year show cause from the Ohio State tattoo case.

More importantly, there are civil cases in which Briles may be placed on the stand. No school really wants to touch someone that hot. The only things in his favor is his coaching record and that all the information which Baylor has made public didn't specify exactly what he did. They didn't name who was individually responsible for 1,2,3 and x,y,z.

    ReplyDelete
  89. One has to wonder as more and more comes out on this, how many more programs are going to be under the looking glass now?

    ReplyDelete
  90. @Gopher,
In 2015, the Campus Accountability and Safety Act was signed by President Obama. Look at that.

As far as the Justice Dept. looking at colleges, they've been investigating Florida State and Michigan recently, but their report on the University of Montana and the city of Mizzoula police regarding sexual assaults is probably more in line to what is occurring in Waco.

    https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/04/24/new-book-details-u-montanas-citys-mishandling-sexual-assault

    ReplyDelete
  91. @4:14 actually, yes. I'm not a Baylor die hard or even that big of a college football fan, but yes, Corby has stated many times over the last few years how shady the entire situation briles had created in Waco seemed.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I think it would be quite appropriate for the Department of Justice to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Kenneth Starr for systematic obstruction of justice. This would seem to be more egregious than an elected president having sexual relations in a consensual manner with another adult... Just sayin...

    ReplyDelete

Appreciate the response. I honestly don't recall hearing those remarks, but maybe I just tune out when the conversation turns to Baylor football.

  94. Ok, so now I feel a bit vindicated about my disdain for the girl's voice on the Local Ticket ads. After playing one of the ads this morning, Gordo comes on in character as "smiling girl with lazy voice" during the next promo. George had a laugh about it...me, too.

  95. For the most part, I think the commentary on the Baylor scandal has been pretty spot on. I particularly like how many of the hosts have kept a spotlight on the victims and the peripheral impacts to the perception of the university. Jub's discussion of his talk with his niece, who knows a couple of the victims, was moving.

My immediate punch out is when Corby, in the midst of all his unequivocal opinions, starts spouting on about Art Briles. I hear a lot of noise about his motivations when, in reality, Corby knows nothing more than the rest of us. The entire time Corby has no problem beating us to death about all his escapades hanging out with his best friend, Barry Switzer. On his watch, OU players did just about everything (guns, drugs, rape), not to mention all of the Boz-era recruiting violations. Do us all a favor and spare us the "holier than thou" hypocrisy.

  96. As a Baylor alumni I have to say that I agree with the Universities decisions and would not have been pleased if they had kept Briles on. It might only be my perception but there does seem to be a bit of "this is what you get for trying to run with the big boys" tone to Corby's criticism. As if it was trying to compete with UT and OU was nearly as big a sin as the horribly misguided actions that Briles took.

On a somewhat related note. Judge Starr was made an Independent Council to investigate Whitewater not the Lewinsky matter. Lewinsky had not even started to work for President until nearly a year after the Independent Council had been appointed by AG Reno. The Lewinsky scandal was uncovered as part of the Investigation into White Water and the lawsuit that had been brought against President Clinton by Paula Jones.

  97. Thanks for the opinion on the Meadow ads. We tolerate a lot and redundant ads but these are punch out. Nuclear holocaust ? I'm out!

I like the Local Ticket girl's voice (and she's hot) but for her, less is definitely more IMHO.

Newsflash: -Corby is abrasive. But that woman should not get away with that and comeuppance is called for.

  98. Speaking of annoying ads - the station promo with the screaming child in the background is downright uncomfortable to listen to. Who approved that one?

  99. Another Meador ad is out, though not quite as hideous, but still awful. Dane Minor make it stop. Cat Man, please?
