Time for a Little Refresher

Back at the beginning of 2015, this site was getting cluttered with bad, dumb comments, stuff that you see on other sites but I was determined to keep off this one.  So I published a set of "Rules of the Confessional" and urged all persons thinking of commenting to read and heed.

I was very gratified to see an immediate uptick in the quality of comments and a downtick in the number I had to delete.

But this is the Political Season, and the exaggerated emotions that seem to accompany it are starting to seep into the comments.  I had to take down 3-4 comments in the last string.  So I thought it might be time to reprise those rules.

Truth to tell, many of the comments I don't like are a result of the regrettable increase in sociopolitical talk on The Ticket itself.  I loathe it.  Yes, even the Musers are straying into it more than I find enjoyable as I drag a sharp blade across my lathered face in the morning.  So to that extent, politics is fair game -- but please keep your ire, or praise, directed at the shows, and not at your fellow Confessor, who, if you knew him or her, you would probably like quite a lot.

Since a lot of what I was complaining about back then is no longer such a problem here, these rules may look dated.  But I've only tweaked them a little since the original Rules were published.  (The original Rules also announced a moratorium on T.C. talk, which has since been lifted.)

Thank You for Shopping at My Ticket Confession, and I hope your candidate wins.  Text of 2015 Rules follows the asterisk.

*     *     *

Attend, O Confessors.

This is intended to be a site for people who like The Ticket.  Maybe they have an issue here and there, but, in general, I want Confessors to be fans, or, as they have come to be known, "The P1."

I want people to like coming here and know they're going to be treated with respect, or at least not put down by witless, content-free snark.

And, should a Ticket employee wander by, I want them to come away with the impression that they've been in the company of people who care about the station and think carefully about their reactions to it -- not a bunch of snippy teenagers.

So forgive me if I advise that I'm weary of refereeing pissy little flame wars between readers who can't express themselves without taking a shot at others.

And weary as well of visitors who apparently don't like anything about The Ticket, this site, or Your Plainsman.

Or don't forgive me.  Don't care.

My past warnings have gone unheeded.  So, much as I hate to do it, I'm cracking down.

Accordingly:

1.   Shots.   No criticisms of the person of any prior commenter.  If you have a disagreement, express your view in a way that addresses the issue or the facts or the opinion.  However, even brief phrases:

   --   impugning intelligence or motives of a prior commenter;

   --   asserting that prior commenters are all the same guy;

   --   suggesting that a prior commenter lacks reading or comprehension skills;

   --   suggesting that a commenter hasn't listened to the station enough, or for long enough, or is otherwise not a good Ticket citizen;

--   is generally nasty towards another,

will cause your entire confession to hit the pail instantly.  It's too time consuming to edit your stuff for content.  Criticism of opinions is OK, but do it by making your own supportable point or making a legitimate debater's criticism of the prior comment.

I don't care how good your confession is in other respects.  The most brilliant comment that contains a phrase like "here's a thought -- listen to the station" will get bounced.

Subjective?  Absolutely.  Here's a rule of thumb:  Read your post before you send it.  If you see a phrase which, if it were said about you would upset you and make you want to respond in kind -- take it out.

2.    Vulgarity.  Don't use it.

3.    Tone.  Angry, hateful, threatening, overly emotional comments -- out.  I'm serious about all of these comments, and this one may seem slight, but I'm telling you:  Tone it down.

4.    Name-Calling.  Applies not just to fellow Confessors, but to anyone.

5.    Stuff That's Just Too Wrong.  The other day got a comment from a guy ragging on T.C. and Corby.  Same old stuff, didn't like it, but met the standards in effect at that time.  Was going to publish, then noticed that he seemed to think that the midday host's name was "Stern."

[5.5  (added 03-07-15):  Commentary on subjects' personal lives is strongly discouraged.  Exceptions may be made if the matter relates to on-air events.]

6.   Anything That Strikes Me As Designed to Pick a Fight.  You figure it out.

Here's a further suggestion:  Cut and paste your comment into a file before sending it.  If your comment appears and then disappears, I've made it go away.   If you still think it's worthwhile, go back and figure out why I bounced it.  Fix it and repost.

Guys, I'm sorry about this, but I'm even sorrier that the comments have gotten so sorry.  I'd say a good third to a fourth of the comments that I published on the last thread would not have made it under the foregoing standards. [Again -- this was written in January 2015; comment does not apply to recent threads.]

You will be amazed at how easy it is to express your point of view -- even one that is critical of the point of a prior comment -- without impugning the character or talents of your fellows on this site.

Don't write me complaining about my judgment on comments.  I'm not interested.  You want the objective standard of unfettered commentary, there are other homes for you on the plains of the Internet.

This means you.
Come on now.  Let's keep this site going.  Let's make it a place that attracts the attention of people who matter and where you can be heard without bringing a bunch of cheap crap down on your head.

And let's have some fun.

Thank you for shopping at My Ticket Confession.

  1. Jake's anti-Oklahoma (the whole state and every person in it) on The Shake Joint may have been intended to be a hyperbolic bit, but it came off as really nasty. Sean rescued it to some degree by even more hyperbolically extending the loathing to several Oklahoma-adjoining states and expelling them all from the Union, but it was still the kind of thing that loads the guns of Jake's detractors.

Too bad; I'm not a Jake detractor; in fact, a fan. But he's going to have to go some to shake off the Dylan-the-Argumentative-Teen persona from his earlier days.

It was interesting to hear -- I had occasion to drive to Norman on business this week, a trip I've never made, and I was struck by the beauty of the drive. Love those mighty Arbuckle Mountains, the oldest mountain structures between the Rockies and Appalachians.

  2. I know that will likely unleash a storm of anti-Jake posts. That's OK -- just give us something specific and new, how 'bout?

  3. I don't think JakeZ read your rules Plainsman!

You can tell jakez has a MAJOR hangover. After the Oklahoma rant, both he and Bass went off on the Dez sichiashun and how he gets favoritism. I found it funny (not like a clown) they made an analogy to corky, of all hosts, and how he hasn't returned a cumulus email in 6 months and no one says anything. Just more evidence most of the confessor rants on corky are not entirely inaccurate. I would've loved to hear the begging and guilt manipulation he pulled on the phone or in person to Rhyner when Rhyner was thinking of going to The Fan some years ago.

  4. Interestingly, wasn't Jake was a little late to the show today?

    ReplyDelete
  5. He confessed to some excessive beer drinking at the TCU-OU game last night. I believe he was a few minutes late.

They started out the current segment with the "Sarah Palin doesn't read" Couric interview, and now they're playing clips from a Trump rally. I can't see how you are going to avoid some caustic politico-talk unless you had a bionic delete key finger installed last week.

  6. I love all that Jake has to offer and think he's great in any role you put him in...and he's been shaking that argumentative teen vibe off lately (at least for Me). I think part of it is a bit, like I've heard Jake say about space being super gay, he said it hyperbolically and then it stuck so now he's just rolling with it.

Remember confessors part of radio is putting on a little play for entertainment purposes.

  7. Agree with Boo! on all counts, including Jake's overall excellence. But Jake was grumpy when he arrived, and those remarks came across as pre-adolescent.

  8. I know The Ticket has somewhat righted the ship in terms of ratings compared to a year or two ago, however, one number that is not a home run with them is the age of their audience. The Fan's listener base is WAY younger.

So, what will happen a few years down the road? Will that younger listener want something more like The Ticket to listen to, or will they stay with the Fan?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Pman, good luck on that no politics talk. We're two months away from electing one of the two craziest people in history, not to mention it's a huge topic on the sports stations. Choose your battles better.

  10. GoPT poses a good question. My guess is that they'll stay with The FAN. You're always fondest of what you cut your teeth on. I can't see some tween to teen to early 20 something having an epiphany and becoming a Ticket P1. Quite the opposite, in fact. There is a station in Houston that was run by The FAN's current pd that basically ripped everything, including show names and segments and segment names from The Ticket. There are countless people in Houston that truly believe that it was their station and their shows who came up with Homer Call of the Week, The Emergency Break, Fake Jerry, Fake Wade, and referring to their listeners as P1s, P2s, and P3s.

That is the history of radio. There is or was a station in Atlanta doing the same thing. Look at the number of variations of station names that call themselves The Ticket. Same with the branding of The Wolf or Young Country or any of a dozen AOR stations that patterned themselves after KZEW in the 70's and 80's.

As to teeners and 20 somethings that listen, they are out there. I have heard several at remotes say they listened with their Dad at 12-13 and have stayed with the station. As yu say, are there enough to make a difference.

  14. ESPN got a little too baseball intensive today, and I clicked over to THL. I caught some of Corby's Gong Show bit. I was thinking of the Unknown Comic, and then Danny just happened to bring him up. Then Danny comes back with a 'do you want to hear an Unknown Comic joke?'...I thot, 'is he going to actually tell the same joke I remember?' Well, it wasn't, but is was funny. One that I remember was....
Unknown Comic: Chuckie baby, Chuckie baby...I just heard the news about your jock strap committing suicide!!
Chuck Barris: What the hell are you talking about?!
Unknown Comic: Yeah! He said he was tired of living an empty life!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anom 1:47

Because running ads for bars, strip joints, and concerts don't pay the bills. Ask Z-rock and The Eagle at various times in its history.

The 18 to 35 demo normally does not have the money to spend on big ticket items. The 35-54( I would move that demo to 65) has the stability and disposable income that attracts advertisers. Why buy ad time with a station if a large part of their demographic can't legally consume or afford your product?

  20. A little perspective is what is needed to understand what Corba is. As noted in an earlier thread, when he visits a show it becomes a Corby show. That is his gift and his curse. I would most compare him to Skip Bayless. Now don't get me wrong I way prefer Corby to Skip. Each has a completely different schtick. That being said, once Mike parts ways with the Hardline I cannot imagine a 4 hour Corby-centric show.

Corby will get a gig on a local network TV show. He makes an interesting first impression and with the proper program director that understands that less is more, Corby will continue to thrive. When you see him in 10 years on TV you will think to yourself, 'that is the same bag he had on the ticket' and you will be right but most of the Metroplex hasn't even heard of the friendly Cobra.

When I first started listening to the little ticket many moons ago I was immediately drawn to Corby and Greggo. Punch me in they nuts if you want but they were the most inviting. However, as time went by I began to appreciate and understand the solid genius of Mike and Dan. To this day these two remain my leaders. Bob has developed a sense of humor that really balances Sports Sturm. Norm is a treasure from the previous era. Donnie Doo and Jake are up and coming talents. Lastly, although I almost never listen to the Musers I do believe they are the foundation of the station. I hear them during GNOs and realize that if I was listening to radio during those hours I would be listening to them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very nice stroke, 111.

See, that's the way you do it.

I don't entirely agree with your first paragraph. Corby is much easier to take on non-Hardline appearances, and he is not nearly the dominator that he is on The Hardline. Which is why I hold Mike R largely responsible for the lack of balance on the show. If he would prepare, assert himself, stop acting like he's 15 years older than he is, and just plain farking TALK more, we would all find The Hardline much easier to take much more of the time. When Mike is prepared and engaged and contributing, you don't hear all the Corby interruptions. But because he is the nominal leader and doesn't lead, there's a vacuum that someone needs to fill, and that fillage has got to be unprepared, rambling, repetitive Corby.

I think a Mike-less Hardline -- either with a substitute Mike or with Corby as the designated boss of the show -- would surprise you. When Corby is called on to be responsible for a presentation, he does a creditable job of it and you don't hear some of the hard-to-listen-to stuff he throws out when he's baiting Mike or nattering on about one of his personal favorite topics. I think a Corby and Danny Hardline (or whatever they want to call it) might actually be a good listen, but it wouldn't sound like today's Hardline at all.

Don't misinterpret me. I am not longing for the day that Mike hangs it up. Love the guy, think he is an absolutely classic broadcaster who deserves all the fame and awards that have come his way. But boy, his signature show would sure be better if he'd stop coasting and, to use Jeff Catlin's analogy in these very pages, become a much sturdier leg on that three-legged stool.

    * * *

I've also wondered about a TV career for Corby. Could happen, could well happen.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree that Corby may be a "less is more" type of radio personality. For instance, when I first started listening (2004), I counted him among my favorite on-air personalities. Now, as often as not he rubs me the wrong way.

Maybe I've "grown out" of him, or maybe his being featured as a co-host since Greggo's departure has strained his likability. Really, I can't really make it that far into The Hardline without some particular segment to look forward to, and part of that is because they all, but especially Corby, seem so under-prepared for their segments.

I swear, sometimes they ask each other the most basic information about their segment topics and none of them seem to know the answer - or, someone will answer authoritatively only to issue a retraction/correction minutes later. Some segments, like E-News, I begrudgingly accept they are just reading off stories as they go, but if you plan a segment around a certain topic (especially one non-current events) I figure you could have more than just questions and half-baked assumptions to go on air with.

  24. Wow God of Pop Tarts is rehashing issues I brought up three years ago.

    http://myticketconfession.blogspot.com/2013/09/numbers.html

The biggest issue now is if Nielsen research methods and ratings are both reliable and valid. To me, the issue is out on the answer to both.

For those questioning the listening habits of millennials, you can look at this from Nielsen in 2015 and/or search millennials on their site for further "data". They listen less overall than Boomers and Gen-X and their preferred listening time is apparently PM drive.

  25. As has been mentioned here many times, Corby is the quintessential yuck monkey. In as league by himself. Retire the trophy. He has also received kudos for when he is paired with someone besides Mike. I say that's because those are special occasions and he prepares accordingly. But on a daily basis, he seems content to just wing it.

Corby has already had his screen test for TV, co-hosting Good Morning Texas for a few days (that's where "woods-on-run.com" came from.) For whatever the reason, he hasn't been invited back. Or maybe he has declined. I have no idea.

My guess is that when Mike finally packs it in and Corby's contract expires, the Fan will money-whip him.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with Boo.
Donnie and Corby/Danny is a good combination. Did they say Mike would be out until monday? If so, Donnie and Switzer might be interesting Friday on remote.

  27. Yuk monkey begins and ends with the greatest of all Gordos.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You guys kill me. Channel 33 gave Corby a little shot about 12 years ago, and it was an embarrassing disaster. We never saw him again. When THL is done, Corby will be too. Maybe in some smaller yuc monkey roles. He's been riding the coat tails of the Ticket and Hardline popularity for nearly 20 year, but people are starting to wise up. Corby started out on Chris Arnold show, and he eventually hijacked it to the point Chris had to shelve his on show to get rid of him. I'm sorry Plainsman. I know I'm supposed to take it easier, but Corby has always annoyed the heck out of me. He is the absolute crown prince of the "humble brag".

    ReplyDelete
  29. ...if Gordo can't , or won't, land a lucrative tv gig, what the heck chance would Corby have?

    ReplyDelete
  30. OK, slinky, as Dr. Phil would say, "Let's get real."

12 years ago Corby gets a shot on UHF 33--12 years ago!--and that's it huh? No way could he have improved, etc., in over a decade...yeah, right. As to Chris Arnold, CA's show was s-canned because it and he were poor in quality and ratings. The Janet Jackson bizarro era pretty much killed the show. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you really didn't listen to the show.

Corby comes under a lot of deserved fire. But yours is undeserved and inaccurate.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Slinky, my valued Confessor, I have to go with 1148 on this one.

Some people on this site like Corby. Some do not. I trend pretty much into the former category, while conceding his excesses and aggravations. Guy can make me laugh. Really something that only one other host (Craig "Junior" Miller) makes me do.

But like him or not -- come on, despite predictions of doom, The Hardline didn't miss a beat when Corby slud on over into HeeHoo's seat -- at least as far as the ratings are concerned.

And while perhaps not as dominant both among Ticket shows and with the competition as they used to be, they're still tops in their slot and have been forEVer.

And if you listen to Why Today Doesn't Suck, you find out that lots of birthday people regard Corby as their leader.

So while you may have legitimate criticisms of the guy, to characterize him as the Typhoid Mary of the shows he's on is not supportable.

  33. Guys, I'm sorry I sometimes ride Corby a little too much. But look, one confessor mentioned Corby on tv in maybe 10 years. In 10 years Corby will be nearly 60 years old. Now, if there's ever a demand for middle-aged, voice still breaking, over the top fake laughing, aren't-I-just-the-coolest-guy-and-you're-lucky-you-have-me attitude having, constantly yapping about useless TMZ crap person....then yeah...he moves to the head of the line. OK..no more on Corby from me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Do they need to send out the truant officer to look for Mike?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Slinky, I think you just got the "Hey, look what Jerruh did with the Cowboys net worth" dogpile. No apology is necessary for riding corky a little too much. He deserves it given the criticism he escapes regarding his racist/sexist commentary on a regular basis. As I write this, he's once again ruining THL with a segment on how he went to TCU free but he can't put down his allegiance to Oklahoma because they won more games when he was younger. Humble-brag you mention? He followed the defense of bandwagonism up with how he got in to the Founders Club at the TCU game Saturday and hilariously tapped an old guy on the shoulder.

Plainsman, in regard to THL being just as successful after corky was gifted his position, The Ticket and the others on THL deserve WAY MORE credit for not letting corky screw it up.

    ReplyDelete
  36. After declaring that he can't talk politics for more than 5 minutes (yes, that's what he said) Corby is now doing a segment on how politics is dividing locker rooms.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd like to sum up/simplify the reasons I'm not so much a fan of Corby.

    Things he has in excess:
    1. being overbearing
    2. speaking in all-or-nothing superlatives
    3. Opinions (as in, if you don't share this opinion you are obviously (fill in the blank) stupid, a bigot, not a cool kid like me...etc, etc)
Things he has in short supply:
    1. Humility
    2. sports knowledge
    3 sincerity
    4. Preparedness
    5. Sensitivity (Can't believe he uses, "chick" and "broad")

Even though I'm not a fan, he has a great sense of humor, and the best laugh in radio history. And although you're not going to get the hard-hitting and insightful stuff, I would also rate him high on the laid-back, buddy-style interviews he's done with Shaq, Tones Romes and others.

    That is all...

  41. I was reminded today about something I've been meaning to comment on. When they showed Jerry up in his private roost, I remembered Slinky's post a few threads back. He kind of got heckled on his George Bush being bad luck at local games. There's some truth to his madness. We just haven't seen Bush that mush as of lately. Every event he was at, we lost the game. The best was the SMU basketball winning streak a couple years back. Bush and family all televised the at the game....SMU lost that game....went on to lose the rest of their games...and did not even make the 64 tourney pic! Bush is bad luck! Jerry...keep him away from your private roost during Cowboy games!

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Bush is bad luck meme is inane. It's merely an oblique partisan politics shot. Thought you didn't want that sort of stuff in your comboxes, Pman? Isn't that the gist of your post?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't think Corby has any desire to leave the little Ticket for TV or additional commitments. Why would he? He is already making a half million dollar + per year salary or there abouts and no matter how much he rubs some people the wrong way on the Radio he is a devoted family man and father above all else. It is very obvious he loves the copious amounts of free time he has and spends much of the day with his young kids. He has a charmed life and I don't see him someone with greater ambition. Just my opinion and I have no inside info but just putting the pieces together on what he seems to value.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I adjudge Meat as just having a bit of fun. The post wasn't harsh or angry and didn't violate any particular Rule. I took down a comment in reply, however, which was both, and did.

    ReplyDelete
  45. By the way, I hope it is apparent that the default attitude here among MTC's vast editorial staff is that comments should survive if at all possible. It takes a pretty bright-line violation to get a comment booted.

    ReplyDelete
  46. But you adjudged the following as OK? Perhaps because it is an ad hominem attack on an individual who deigned to express dissatisfaction with MTC? Me thinks, yes.

"Aww, the little millennial got upset that his thought regarding the demographic was not that original. Your "special snowflake" didn't really be as such."

Yeah, that embodies the spirit of your Rules...

    ReplyDelete
  47. You're right. I should have dumped a couple of those snotty responses. I was out of town and away from a computer when they came in and when I got back it slipped my mind. I frankly gave some thought to dumping DA's original post as well which started with an uncalled-for shot. But I didn't do either.

We're not going to get into a fracas about how I run this joint. Visit if you like it, avoid it if you don't. But we've got more enjoyable things to discuss than the quantum of snark it takes to get a comment sent to the pail.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Quantum of Snark. That is a turn of phrase I shall have to remember Plainsman, well done!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Listening to Corby and Danny talk about the Rangers playoff sweep is really really bad. Their grasp of sabermetrics and the game in general seems quite poor. Donnie is making sensible points while those other two just fume and blabber...and I like Danny or Corby!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Its been expressed before but Donnie is fantastic...He's bringing some combativeness (if that's a word) to THL. Its nice to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  51. And because Danny and Corby have become SJWs, they are afraid to actually disagree with Donnie in any substantive way. Which is an insult to Donnie, but also makes for rather amusing radio.

Good script, good performance. A different feel than a typical Gordon character, but holds its own as a memorable 840 character.

  58. Sorry, my "well played" played comment was in response to 4:05. Listening to THL. Amazing how it's such a different vibe with Jake and Machine. Very enjoyable - always enjoy those two together. Just seems that they know how to weave in and out of the conversation. Just had some baseball talk, and while Ryhner drove the bus, J&M didn't try to monopolize, but interjected comments at the right times. That's how it should be.

  62. I share the enthusiasm for the Mike + Jake Hardline.

I like him on his own show, almost without exception. Potential future Ticket mainstay.

And maybe he had instructions today to pop on frequently.

  63. Had I known Corby wasn't on THL today, I would have tuned in. Sounds like I missed a good show.

  64. Who is more annoying when having to listen to the antics from one of their Peter Pan road trips? Corby or Sirois? And why doesn't it bother me when Jub, Norm, Jr, share their travel stories.
