Why I Hope At Least One of Terrell McClain, Geoff Swaim, or (Unlikely) Rolando McClain, Becomes An Enormous Star for the Cowboys

Time for a spot of fun.  Maybe only for me, but at least I will enjoy it.

This week The Musers took a swing at a motto Dak Prescott.  Junior got it started with "We're going Dak to the future," and George chimed in with "Once you go Dak, you'll never go back."

I've got a couple to suggest myself.  One of which will almost certainly die on this page except as a source of ridicule directed at Your Plainsman, the other of which has some chance of showing up on a poster at a game, if Jerry even allows posters in that dump.

The first one requires a bit of history, children, so sit back  .  .  .  .

There once was a major league baseball team called the Boston Braves.  The team eventually moved to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta, but in the years we care about, the post-war 40's and even into the 50's, it was the National League team in Boston.

During those years, the Braves had two superior pitchers -- Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain.  You can look them up, but for our purposes they provided the Braves with a devastating 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

Once, during the pennant drive in 1948, they put together a remarkable run, aided by the weather.  They swept a double header.  After two days off, there was a rainout.  Spahn came back and won, and the next day, Sain won.  Three days later, Spahn won, and then Sain won again.  After an off day, the two pitchers were designated again, and they both won again.  Together, they went 8-0 in 12 days.  We'll come back to that in a moment.

Spahn went on to have the more memorable career, but Sain was a 20-game winner four times.  He threw the last pitch to Babe Ruth in an organized game (in 1943 in an exhibition game between major leaguers managed by Ruth and a team made up of servicemen, including Ted Williams).  Ruth walked.  He also threw the first major league pitch to Jackie Robinson, who grounded out to short.

Sain died in 2006.  Spahn, who died in 2003, won 20 games or more in 13 seasons.  He's the top all-time southpaw winner with 363 wins.  He went 23-7 when he was 42, and pitched 382 complete games.  Times have changed.

But returning to 1948 and that remarkable run.  It inspired Boston Post sports editor Gerald Hern to dash off a catchy little poem:

     First we'll use Spahn
     then we'll use Sain
     Then an off day
     followed by rain
     Back will come Spahn
     followed by Sain
     And followed
     we hope
     by two days of rain.

This got shortened to the phrase (I hope) many of you will recall hearing that became the rallying cry for that 1948 team:

"Spahn and Sain and pray for rain."

It became very famous -- Spahn later said:  "It's not so much my pitching people know, but that little poem about me and Johnny Sain with the forty-eight Braves."  It even became a commercial slogan:

The Braves won the NL Pennant that year, but fell in six games in the World Series to, of all teams, the Cleveland Indians.

What has all of this to do with The Ticket?  I began this post recalling Craig's and George's efforts to put something together in the way of a catch-slogan for this year's Cowboys.  It got me thinking and I came up with this, referencing Sean Lee, Terrell McClain, and Dak.  It's cute, but really only works if McClain rises to some kind of dominance.  After an interesting pre-season, Geoff Swain seems to have vanished, but I can hope -- his name actually works best, because I can throw an "and" in there, and it's a funnier name so I'll use that, but we may have to go back to "McClain" if Geoff never sees the gridiron, and "McClain" is really a better rhyme.

Ready?

"Sean and Swaim and pray for Rayne."

ALTERNATIVE:  "Sean, McClain, and pray for Rayne."

OK, it's a stretch.

Here's another one.

Back when the New Orleans Saints were good in the early 80's they had a rallying cry:  "Who dat?  Who dat?  Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?"  The Neville Brothers actually recorded a song with that theme with some Saints players, shortened to "Who Dat Gonna Beat Dem Saints?"  Fans took it up as a cry of solidarity at games.  Despite its minstrel origins, the Saints even adopted it as an official slogan.

You're way ahead of me:

"Who Dak?  Who Dak?  Who Dak Gonna Lead Dem 'Boys?"

(or "'Pokes," or "Cowboys," if we can't say "Boys" anymore, even if there's no racial implication).

[[CORRECTION:  As the Ticket Drop might say, "WELL F_____ ME!"  I don't subscribe to Sports Illustrated and so didn't know that this particular gag had already been made.  I did a search for the "who dak" phrase before writing this, and nothing popped up, so I thought there was some chance it was original.  Guess not.  Sorry.]]

Enough -- some of you might say more than enough -- of this wordplay.  I hope we have all learned something and perhaps even inspired some of you to top this (not a big challenge, I know).

Didn't like this post?  Oh, all right, here you go:

"Oh, but Plainsman, I like lots of wordplay."

I thought I could hear traces of both Bob Dylan and Springsteen in his music, so Jason Garrett should love him.

  5. Oh yee who roams the plains so well. I love the dive off high platform into this one. It reminds me of sitting with my grandfather watching his 23" Zenith wood grained console watching the Rangers with tv on NYE and the radio on.

I love your allusions but I think they're a stretch. Taglines need to be organic. It's like calling Donny Doo Doo Cornbread after he's called for it.

I will say the Spahn leg kick is a thing of beauty much like Nolan, Paige, or my favorite Valenzuela.

I also noticed how much the Braves logo looks like current Blackhawks logo which itself looks like the ND Fighting Sioux logo that the NCAA banned. That would NEVER fly today. Why is it that all logos made after 1970 seem spare? I would put three of the four local teams in that category.

  6. I would like to see a show of hands for all Ticket listeners who do NOT punch out when Bob from Hidden Cost Motors comes on. I'd be willing to bet that The Ticket suffers the loss of one ratings point per show because of the presence of Meador Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram commercials on the showgrams.

  13. I honestly think the ads on the ticket get more talk on this blog than the actual ticket shows and content do. Why on earth would anyone listen to commercials? Click one of your presets and go to something else until the show comes back on, life is too short. I don't even listen to Tickers anymore.

And by the way. Corby..."SMU is legit?". Really..are you serious? Reason #248 why Corby is a sports talk vacuum.

  15. @ellsilives, Corby is like a runaway train that everybody just stands back and watches run roughshod over everything. Nobody says anything or does anything to stop it. The guy can spew volume upon volume of incorrect talking points and there is nobody there to correct him or call him on it. He is doing a show with his country cousin Danny and his grandpa Mike and they just sit there and listen and agree. Sports talk vacuum is a very apt description.

  16. Plains, I agree....most annoying! Right there with the painfully unfunny, and too long, Jimmy John's commercial!

  17. I agree about the car commercials. I change the station every single time. And recently, I found myself driving by a car place called Meador. I assume that's the one who puts out the commercials. I have to say, my thought toward that business as I drove by was a very negative one, all because of the commercials. I can't say I have ever been able to say that before about any company or product. There is zero % chance I will ever spend a dime at Meador now.

  18. For those wondering why the Ticket doesn't attract the younger male audience anymore, look no further than Ed Carter sports hotline. No one under 35 understands the concept. The Meador campaign is awful. Sad thing is, it's a great dealership. Too bad the spots do nothing to evince this.

The new Romo-Reagor spot is comical and head scratching. Why, Tony, why? You have more than enough dough. Nice little coup for Bart R, though.

    @8:47/9:09am
Is there anything you find enjoyable on The Ticket? If so, what? If not, why do you listen, much less visit a fan site?

Someone else mentioned it above, but I do find it sorta funny how no one says a thing about the Chicago Blackhawks logo. Also found the Canadian guvment's lack of self-awareness vis-a-vis the Cleveland Indians to be typical. Oh that Canadian self righteous hubris. I mean, the Edmonton Eskimos; are you serious?

    1. The thing that I notice here is: how much attrition is there from one show to the next on a given frequency? And while THL still has the highest number in afternoon drive, they are losing 11% of Bad Radio's audience. Similarly, roughly 23% of the GBag Nation/Fan audience tunes elsewhere when Ben and Skin take over. Conversely, the ESPN audience doubles at the 3p changeover (albeit off of a much smaller baseline number).

It's fairly obvious that THL and B&S tend to drive listeners to seek other options during the key afternoon drive day-part; about half tune to Cowlishaw while the other half apparently seek non-sports talk alternatives.

I wonder if advertising rates are adjusted accordingly. One would think that a THL drive-time spot should command a higher price than a similar spot in noon-3, but if I am a sponsor I would have to think long and hard if I would rather invest in a program that is actively hemorrhaging listeners, or would I rather spend my money elsewhere?

  26. Am I wrong or has the Hardline taken a relative dive when compared to their Ticket brethren?
As far as I remember, the Musers have always been #1 in the market.
However, BaD in solid 2nd and particularly Norm & D ahead of the Hardline confirms what I have been sensing for some time.
I am both surprised and impressed with the Norm & D numbers. How do these numbers compare to pre-Donnie?
How long has the Hardline been in 4th?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wasn't there a time we were marveling at the numbers that showed the Hardline didn't suffer from the loss of Greggo? Doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The Hardline didn't have much competition when Greggo was around, so of course it isn't the case anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Corby during CQH: "She has three little blonde kids." Weird slip up there? Said it as a way of emphasizing how difficult it would be for a mom to commit the crime in question. Context says he was going for "beautiful kids" or "precious kids" ... but he went with "blonde". Not saying Corby's some kind of big, mean discriminator. But I do think he sees the world through the lens of narrow societal archetypes a lot of the time, and maybe this was a tell. Maybe I'm wrong. Not trying to be Dr. C. Maxwell. Just struck me as a weird moment.

  30. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I think Russ Martin was giving them a pretty good run for the money back then.

  31. I'm catching myself listening more to ESPN. During BaD's commercials, or boring interviews, I'll check out JJT. I always liked JJT, even when he was with Richie Whitt. I guess Richie dropped him after snagging Greggo.

  34. What interests me about the ESPN show these days is that Steve Dennis kind of has the same cadence and supercharged volume, although not the same timbre, as Matt Mosley. I don't mind it, but I know it grates on some of you and I understand that.

ESPN is my switch-to show when my attention wanders from The Hardline. For some reason, I just can't stick with Ben 'n' Skin for any period of time. I'm not sure why. It's not offensive, it can be interesting, but . . . I find myself not hanging with it for more than a few minutes at a time. I keep telling myself I'm going to binge-listen to B&S and write up some kind of review -- who knows, maybe I'd get to like it if I got more familiar with it -- for your consideration. But then I think I'll miss something entertaining on The Hardline, so I don't stay long with the THL competitors.

Like some of you, I do find it interesting that The Ticket's PM drive show has become the least popular of the four prime-time shows in the demo. Don't know whether to attribute it to the decline of THL or better competition or both. Let me think about it.

Jeff C, if you're out there and would like to weigh in, please do.

  39. However implausible, I vote for the old grey wolf for the Rangers radio broadcast. He is not a cookie cutter product. It may take a while for the audience to appreciate him but he grows on you. I think he would be beloved. Pair him with a literate and engaged former jock and I think it would be solid gold.

His last call in might've been week 2 of the season. I kinda doubt there is some sort of edict about not letting him on the air, or at least limiting the times he's put on. My gut tells me that after all the hullabaloo that he caused-on purpose-he might've finally burned himself out.

THL has kind of become the Tom Landry of the Ticket. Was great back in it's day, but has stayed around too long and become stale, and is pretty much being kept around out of sentiment. 61. @Gopher; @ManMeat,

There is little reason to trust both the reliability and validity of Nielsen's data. Know that DFW numbers are generated by no more than 300 folks who have a PPM. Some stations in smaller markets have left subscribing to the ratings since diaries are even less reliable as listerners overstate how long they listen.

Radio advertising is a $18B/year industry in the USA, TV advertising is a $75B industry and both are on a foundation of quicksand known as Nielsen data. Yesterday (Monday), notice how Nielsen had to retract their data regarding the loss of ESPN subscribers? This wasn't the first time which their numbers were questioned as networks went after them in February.

    http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/nielsen-now-removes-its-november-cable-estimates-espn-networks-safe-for-now.html

Let's also consider that the Nielsen data also states that while The Ticket is #1, The Fan is #4 overall. Plus The Fan is #1 with those age 18-34. Remember, ratings mean even less if the listeners don't listen to the commercials and use those products/services.

  65. I have a hypothesis on why THL is doing so poorly. I admit that I punch out after Mike's Mind which is the last bit of original commentary on the ticket for the day. I have to wake up early for work and gear just about everything from the Sea Bass uber Ticker through WTDS. It's become obvious that the drive time crew's idea of prep is simply listening to the other hosts throughout the day and retreading it for their own presentation. There is nothing original, either sports or news related, even when something breaks mid-day. Their best broadcast occurs when they're doing play by play on a local car chase

Man, 9:45, you are describing my listening habits and why they are as such to a T. You are right, Shaggy, but it doesn't take away the fact that they are p.m. drive and yet are now the lowest rated of all the Varsity shows. It's been said a million times in these comment sections but it bears repeating: That THL is so unprepared, devoid of meaningful and original content, has a grasp on current events like that of a pre-teen, and STILL is number one in their time-slot (though only vs. the other two sports stations--recall there was a time when they beat all shows, regardless of genre)....says everything about their competition and nothing about the quality of their show. I totally understand those who are beginning to check out Cowlishaw and Dennis or other options (though I must say that for the life of me I've never understood the appeal of Russ Martin--even though his ratings beat THL).

I wonder what's up Russ? While I never understood the appeal of his show, other than a sort of Howard Stern angle, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

  72. I think he had some kind of blood clot in a leg.

Probably put a damper on going through Rhyners trash.

  73. Hope he gets better. But yeah, I remember the Observer tell all on him many years ago. A complicated and odd guy to say the keast.

  74. This morning Shan and RJ over on The Fan had a MAJOR show announcement. The biggest one they have ever had according to them. Turns out some spare on their show's wife is pregnant. How ridiculous is that? I feel like most major show/station announcements way under deliver, but that may be the worst one I have ever heard.

  76. So funny to read tweets to Gordon. He somehow manages to be a mouthpiece for both the left and the right at the same time.

It's the quintessential lab experiment that people hear what they want to hear.

  78. I suspect that Gordo's political beliefs lean left but I do believe he's able to objectively look at real world politics and understand that the left-right paradigm is a ruse.
