Endorsement and Encore

This is unlikely to be a controversial opinon.

I really like "Work in Progress" (although don't care for that name).  I was out on a jog this morning  listening to Justin Montemayor and David Mino and I chuckled out loud on more than one occasion, and was pretty attentive all the rest of the time.

Justin proved to be a natural broadcaster from his very earliest stints as a fill-in host and other on-air exposure.  It has taken David a little longer to be comfortable, but he's improved immensely over the past several months.

There's also the matter of chemistry.  I didn't feel it with Justin and Machine, but he and David work together pretty seamlessly and -- something even harder to achieve -- evenly.  I thought of it as "Justin's show" for a long time, but now the balance is good and the back-and-forth pretty seamless.

Justin has always been funny, very much in the dry, witty mold of Craig "Junior" Miller.  David doesn't have Justin's facility with the language, but he's got a native sense of what's going to play with the Sunday morning crowd.

And here's something else -- it's probably been in there somewhere and I just don't remember, but these guys steer blessedly clear of  "current events."  They'll do the weird news stories for laughs, but we don't get too many snide remarks about politicians of the left or right.

Thanks, gents.

I'd like to hear "Work in Progress" more often.

And now, to please a couple of Confessors who Cared Enough to Write -- the same red as last post:

  1. Wasn't work in progress a fahy thing too? Are we just gonna pretend be never existed?

  2. Agree. I’m a big fan of both guys. And your right about them pretty neutral politically which I appreciate. I was hoping Justin would have a bigger role after TC departed but it seems like he hasn’t been on the air as much. Or maybe it’s my imagination. I really like what Julie brings to noon to three.

  3. Fahy wasn't a part of it. He was a 7th tier employee who too cooled/bad boyed (as in a 17 yr old bad boy) his way out of a job. His time on The Ticket was but a blip on the radar, quickly over, quickly forgotten. But he did do a solid job narrating BaD Radio Presents.

  5. Just caught the end of what sounded like a like a hardline rock death bit. Who were they talking about.

  8. Any chance of Julie hosting with Donovan once norm retires?

  9. I don't know if our friend Surly has inside information, but I think his answer is correct because while Norm may fade away a bit, he is never going to retire.

  10. Julie is absolutely killing it on BaD Radio with her witty input. Great addition. Very good rapport with Bob and Dan.

  11. I also think that Julie is doing a fantastic job. Input: not too much, not too little. Chemistry: great with everyone. Sports knowledge: way above average, especially on Hockey.
Also, she is a very pleasant presence, she's nice, not awkward, she's funny and doesn't take herself too seriously. She can take care of herself among the established personalities at the Ticket; no easy task. She is a wonderful addition to The Ticket team. I think she will go far.

  12. I have to agree. She's unobtrusive but whenever she chirps on, it lightens the whole show. I know Justin would like to have had that gig, but his arrow is up as well. Cat did not err in mixing things up a little on BaD.

  13. BaD Radio has never been better than it is now. And Julie has been a fantastic addition. They are in top form.

  14. Agreed. BaD has really come into its own over the past 5 years. The addition of Julie has made a great show even better. BaD is The Ticket's best.

I'll say this: the last two NaD shows have been electrifying radio. We've been treated to vintage Norm, an outspoken Donnie, and a defiant Sirois. Compelling stuff, for sure.

  15. I dunno about BaD Radio never having been better. Maybe. I'm not a student of the show. I've been able to listen to some of it lately, and I have a theory about it I'll unload at a time of my choosing. But it is hard to deny that Julie has improved its ass.

    As has Jake, Jesus.

  16. Fahy was indeed the 3rd member of the weekly “Work in Progress” podcast they had for a couple years.

I liked TC but guhgree 100% that Julie is a significant upgrade in both Tickers and BaD Radio pop-ons. I would love to hear Julie and Jake do a Saturday show.

  17. The segment today that included that included the 1:30pm interview of Coach Stoops was radio gold. A good example of why Dan is my leader and why I have always thought BaD is the best show on the station. The recap of Dan’s appearance on Doocy’s TV show was hilarious, then they got completely surprised by Stoops showing up on time and had to awkwardly transition in the middle of the segment (which was funny in and of itself), and then the interview of Stoops was super interesting and entertaining (and I have no connection whatsoever with OU, don’t really follow college football, and didn’t know much of anything about Stoops other than he was a successful coach for a long time). Good stuff. That’s why I still listen to BaD Radio every day despite being gone from Dallas for 5+ years.

And I’ll repeat: I think a Saturday show with Julie and Jake would be awesome. I’m totally out on Country Force and rarely listen to the Sirois twins (Lol), but I’m pretty certain I would listen to 100% of the J&J shows.

    Please, Catman of the Americas.

  18. Tap the brakes on Julie just a bit folks. Let's not overexpose her just yet.

  20. Get ready to be beaten down by McGregor at the stadium talk in 3....2...1 glad I have options

  21. Still waiting for that beatdown, chief...

  23. Well,We didn't get a McGregor beat down, but we got little wussy Corby bitching about the local western flavor featured during commercial breaks. Hey dumbass, that's what they do. Seattle...you're probably going to get a Starbucks; Philly...you're probably going to get Geno's! Not that big of deal bro! Don't like it...MOVE! Nobody Will miss you!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Been out of town the last week, will try to get something new up soon. Thanks for checking in.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh man, it sounds like I missed another "I'm too cool for school" Corby segment! I missed fake Jerry this morning and saw where hockey was replacing Top Ten. My god! Is there anything worse than "radio" hockey?! How much money can the Ticket be making off that deal? Where can one catch up on missed Fake Jerry's?

    ReplyDelete
  26. At the risk of appearing to defend Corby, I also roll my eyes just a little when they show cowboy hats and boots being made and trail drives through the stockyards. But it's like mentioning Gene's art work - it comes with the dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Is there anything worse than someone bitching about radio hockey? I mean, c'mon man!, radio hockey means you miss out on hearing lazy Gordo devolving the 840 bit into, wait for it, Koko. How funny!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Omg...more radio hockey! Great!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Obviously The Ticket is getting something significantly positive out of being the Stars' flagship station. If not, they wouldn't have renewed the deal. So, whining on this blog aside, I trust CotA/CTO know what they're doing.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Also be glad they aren't in the eastern conference anymore, over half the games were early Texas starts. It could be worse.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't think they ever were in the Eastern Conference. They were in the Pacific Division, which entailed many 9-9:30 pm starts. I mean, am I wrong here, guys?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Partially. They were in the Central then moved to the Pacific, then back to the Central. Always in the Western Conference.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bob and Dan may have just executed the worst phone call in the history of the Ticket. Dennis Quaid is probably sitting in his hotel room wondering "what just happened?"
