A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."
I tuned into my favorite Ticket show of the early third decade of the twenty-first century -- Work in Progress, of course -- this morning, and I hear David Mino.
And I hear long-time fave rave Justin Montemayor, BUT JUST BARELY. The poor guy was leveled way, way down. I didn't hear the beginning of the show, maybe there was some explanation for this error. Did he need to get into the mic? Did the engineer not hear the difference in their levels? Was there some kind of technical issue that required that Justin sound like he was broadcasting from another room (maybe he was home?)? And when a third party offered a few words, even THEY were leveled up to normal host volume. But poor Justin sounded like he'd been demoted to the soph squad.
When the Ranger Report or whatever it's called came on after that, it sounded like Matt Bermingham was suffering the same muffling, perhaps using Justin's mic from the earlier show. But as the show went on, his level seemed to improve and he and Blake sounded more or less like, you know, broadcast partners.
I demand social and voice-reproduction justice for Justin Montemayor.
What I wish for is a way to do more weeknight local programming and to have WiP on M-F from 7-9/10 followed by The Top Ten, then go national. It's high time and Monty and Mino have more than earned the opportunity. Those two are the future of TT. Fix this shit, Cat.
If the powers that be thought a weeknight show with original content would generate more $$$ minus the added expense than the Top 10, they would do it.
They likely do not view the investment in the KTCK farm system as a good in and of itself. It would have to make money.
let us not forget: KTCK is running the Stars and the NFL, NCAA football during many weeknights. these programming obligations are good easy money. Top 10 is smart, cost effective programming and it's not like the station hasn't attempted putting on a self contained show in that 7-10 slot multiple times over the course of its history. Using that slot for side programming one-offs and for IG has also proven to be low risk and entertaining.
WiP is perfect for a Sunday 3 hour slot, but can they do 3-4 hours, 5x a week. 48 weeks a year? This is the gear change that others have found incredibly difficult to adjust to, and succeed.
I just looked it up. Average TSL for the market from 6a-7p is between 6 and 7 hours per week. It’s between 60-85 minutes for 7p-mid. So a lot less people listening for a lot less time. I get while Cumulus would shy away from a live show at night. Not much of an audience and harder to sell that to advertisers. C
I wonder what the numbers were like for The Hot Spot or Wild Ass Circus. Hey Man What’s Up Rodeo was so tense…and another Ticket defining bit that can’t be done anymore, probably shouldn’t be talked about on air, either. Both shows had a good nighttime vibe. Perhaps there really is no market for such a thing.
As the anon said earlier, I think if they could make money with it, they’d have a nighttime show. But clearly the lack of a live night show has hurt them severely. Hurt them so bad that they’re suffering with a (checks notes) #1 overall 6-plus for 3 months in a row. C
It just doesn't make sense to have a nightime sports talk show airing when all the sports are actually playing their games. Bob talks about this a lot whenever he talks about The Bob Sturm Show
I have always thought it is interesting that Craig thanks Gordo at the end of each Gordo segment as if he is a special guest of the program and not one of the actual partners. I admit it could just be me that has noticed this but at the end of Muse in the News, Gordo's Corner and the Observation Deck the segment always ends with Craig saying "alright thanks Gordon". Conversely there is never a thank you at the end of a George or Craig led segment.
That's an interesting observation about how Craig winds up Gordon segments, 746. But I think it has at least a partial explanation.
Although nominally a host, Gordon has a different role than George or Craig. His segments are more frequently prepared -- they're productions, or assembled, or researched, or composed, in ways that daily topical off-the-cuff sports commentary isn't, or not as much. And they're discrete -- they're more like individual focused performances by Gordon (including News and Corner), not just conversations between friends at which the Musers, and all the programs, excel.
Similar to what I was gonna comment p-man. It’s not as common now, but remember it used be “Dunham and miller show.” Junior and George were the main hosts, gordo is the yuk-monkey, the side show. I think it’s still a thing of junior welcoming and saying goodbye to the kinda side show host.
One more comment on a night show. I agree it is a hard show to do when sports are played at night. Also harder when the station hosts Stars hockey. However, it is a good way to develop a bench and throw a bone to a talent you want to keep or add. Sturm, obviously, started here at night. Fallowill had a night show for a bit.
The Musers rotate days as to who is "driving". You can tell who is driving based on who opens with the 5:30 skate-around. From there, that host is usually also the 8:15 topics person as well as the one who brings any non-sports stories to kick around. (Typically: Junior brings something he has read or something from, say, 60 Minutes; Job often goes with a personal anecdote, a ridiculous TV show, etc.) Gordon never drives.
Craig tossing it to Gordo happens on Craig's "driving" days, and, yes, it is a holdover from the older format.
Yes Lucky Jim I understand the "driving" concept but I was specifically talking about Craig always "thanks" Gordo for his segment. Craig when driving doesn't thank George or vice versa. The Gordo dismount is always the thanks from Craig.
Nobody advertises on the Ticket during prime hours than Trajan Wealth. Imagine how lucrative it must be per ticket listener that they bring on board as a client given the fact they 100 percent steer everyone to converting their hard earned money and assets to high commission annuity products. You can't pay for expensive advertising without those huge up front commissions that annuities strip from the investors pockets. That is a lot of scrilla that goes right into their pockets.
Did you see his tweet last week while he was in the hospital? Made it sound like he doesn't think he has a lot of time left. Maybe he deleted his own account, although that would be uncharacteristic. I guess we will find out.
Surly: either that or he locked himself out of his account on his new "smartphone" he was complaining about. He went on another clot-shot rant and then said something about a transplant. Who knows.
Trajan Troll here. Guilty as charged. I challenge each of you to take all of your money out of whatever you are invested in and go ahead and let Trajan invest it all for you since there are a lot of Trajan defenders here. You too can get the 20 percent "bonus" in their annuity products. Come on My Ticket Confession contributors...Let's give Trajan all of your money. If we contribute 10 million collectively, that is 2 million dollar bonus we will all split. What an amazing investment opportunity.
The book came out at noon. Early indicators another good book for Ticket, good for the Fan with a huge cume increase , bad for the Freak. They’re down again I’m told. C

ReplyDeleteReally hope they invest in the farm system, those boys have something.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, does anyone else just scroll through the redheads and find it relaxing? Maybe I'm just getting old XD

ReplyDelete^^^^^Jack Handy, this one.
ReplyDeleteI think it is Junior's way of keeping Gordo on task. Not sure he would stop without the reminder.

ReplyDeleteAlthough there are exceptions Junior seems to handle most of the formatics.

ReplyDeleteThanks Plainsman

ReplyDeleteOK I see that now. When I looked earlier today I didn't get that page. Just looked like his account no longer existed.
