OPEN THREAD -- More Tech Talk

OK, folks, I'm out for awhile with Mrs. Plainsman on vacay way far away.  Will not be listening to The Ticket.  I have an STD (Scorching Ticket Disquisition, for newcomers) in the hopper but it's not quite ripe yet.  Thought I'd at least get a fresh thread started so visitors wouldn't have to scroll through 50 comments.

While the out-and-out catastrophes seem to have abated for the time being, the station still sounds awful (I also have a budding  STD on that topic that needs a little more time on the vine) and there are still a lot of errors.  After a brief post-Jake-suspension period of silence, the on-air grumbling has returned.

Commenters have noticed that Cumulus is looking for a new Chief Engineer for DFW.  I don't know enough about the hierarchy to know who this person would replace, or if it is a new position, or if it is for all the DFW Cumulus stations or fewer than all.  I was under the impression that the host-reviled Brett Blankenship was not a DFW guy but a little further upstairs at Cumulus.  On LinkedIn his title is "Market Engineering Manager, Tulsa, Oklahoma Area," but I dunno, maybe he's been posted here to supervise the bungled Victory rollout.  But I'm guessing he is not being replaced.  Anyone with a better idea, please weigh in.

Nothing to leave you with here except to get your impressions of station performance since the major meltdowns of a few weeks ago.

*     *     *

Not sure when I'll be returning, so I'll have to rely on you guys to switch gears in the comments if something comes up.  Will try to keep an eye on comments, but maybe not.   Carry on, and hope to see you down the road.

[One last note on the last thread:  Some commenters have recommended that I start screening comments.  It's not a bad idea and I'm thinking about it.  I don't do it for two reasons.  The less-important reason is that I don't have time.  The more-important reason is that it has come to pass that when something breaks ("literally" and figuratively) at the channel, this site gets swarmed and commenters have the news way before I do.  So (1) I am hoping the site can continue to be a source for breaking Ticket news, and (2) I don't want Confessors to be discouraged by having to wait until 9 p.m. to see their and their co-Confessors' comments.  Once-a-day review would also eliminate much of the entertaining and informative give-and-take that commenters provide by being able to respond to one another in real time.  For now, we'll risk the occasional inappropriate comment.]

Thank you for continuing to shop at My Ticket Confession.

  1. Stream talk is also OK. It bores some Confessors, sorry, but the advice here seems to have been useful for large numbers of P1's.

  2. Unrelated to the topics at hand, but on Friday's Top 10, TC threw out a line that made me genuinely LOL. The prior clip was The Hardline talking about the latest developments with "Reality" Steve "tacos al" Carbone, the former ticker guy who became kind of a big deal in the reality show prognostication racket a few years ago. They were talking about all of the notoriety Steve has gotten for "ruining" the season finales of The Bachelor and/or The Bachelorette, the insane number of hits his blog gets and his 49,000-or-so Twitter followers. Corby was especially aghast and said "STEVE... CARBONE" a couple to really emphasize the point that he couldn't believe that Steve had gone on to do anything noteworthy after leaving The Ticket.

TC's summary of the clip afterwards was something like "that's Corby finding it hard to believe that anyone who's not a host could actually do something worthwhile" (thoroughly paraphrased). And he's dead on. There's definitely a flavor of arrogance when hosts (in general) talk about underlings (in general). There are some specific exceptions, like how Jake is getting a lot more respect, and that George generally sticks to the higher ground, but on the whole, hosts treat the rest of the voices we hear as underlings rather than coworkers.

Now, maybe Corby didn't mean it like that and maybe there's something specific that they know about Steve that makes his success especially surprising. But I doubt it.

  4. Birq, you're absolutely right. I recall many years ago that someone new to the Ticket(perhaps Pete Stein?) was at a remote or something, and the Hardline put him on air to ask him a generic question about the remote. He piped in with a comment about a new Rangers development, obviously wanting to start some sports talk with Rhyner and Williams. they would have none of it. The way they belittled him for daring to speak to them as equals made me cringe. The fact that I remember it this many years later speaks to how bad it was at the time.

  5. five...four...three...two...and, you're done.

  6. Word is that the Pete Stein incident caused a major rift in Rhyner's already at that time tenuous marriage. Evidently the She Wolf found her mate's behavior to be demeaning and embarrassing.

  7. Taking a break from packing. I don't know if this was Pete Stein, but some time before Greggo was terminated I heard something that sounded a lot like the incident described. I only remember Hammer's absolutely appalling behavior, don't remember Mike so much. Absolutely inexcusable -- all I remember is Hammer saying "who are you" and just berating the bejeebers out of the poor jamoke for no transgression that I perceived. Really altered my view of Greggo.

  8. Mike was the ringleader. That's Mike issuing the infamous, 4, 3, 2, 1 aaaand you're done. It was appalling on both their parts. Not that it makes it worse, but Pete Stein wasn't some 23 year old kid trying to break into the biz. He was in his late 30s at the time and had been working other markets for years.

@David Robins (i.e., the same Anon who keeps posting this crud but now under a "name"): Even though you misspelled "haven't," the term you used "habent" actually comes from the Latin "habere" (to have). However, "habent" is the 3rd person plural, present active indicative of "habere."

Also, when you do use the term "haven't," remember to use the apostrophe.

  9. So that's where the countdown came from.

TC's remark is quite funny. But . . . is TC the right person to be saying it? I guess if he doesn't, no one will. So props to him.

  10. @Birq - Playing the devil's advocate for a second, but I thought Corby knew Steve Carbone really well on a personal level (e.g. they hung out together with their wives, knew each other outside of work, etc), and maybe Steve's sudden left-turn to success from ticker-guy to reality-show mogul caused Corby's incredulous tone. Like if Grubes suddenly went on to take over as the chairman of American Airlines or something.

Am I remembering the Corby-Carbone relationship incorrectly?

    Captcha = queesse.

  11. LOL at "tacos al" Carbone. I know I've heard it before and it's stupid but I still LOL.

Plainsman, your instinct is right about comment moderation. If you do it, it will cause the conversation here to die a quick death (and your views would take a significant hit since a large part of the draw is the comments). IMO the trade off of having to deal with some idiot comments is well worth it.

  13. How dare anyone bring that up. Plainsman is a blogger of the highest integrity. He isn't just some attention seeking irresponsible jumping to conclusions mob mentality troll like you. If he did it he did it for a good reason. Maybe we habent quite figured that reason out yet, but Plainsman works in mysterious ways. He has his reasons and its not our place to judge. Only plainsman has the right to judge. This is his blog we only post in it. Habent you all figured that out yet? Stupid trolls.

  14. "Word is that the Pete Stein incident caused a major rift in Rhyner's already at that time tenuous marriage. Evidently the She Wolf found her mate's behavior to be demeaning and embarrassing."

A little off topic, but I have been wondering this for a while--what is the marital status of Rhyner, George, and Gordon?

There was a random comment on this blog a while back that George is now divorced but I missed it if it was mentioned on air. I assumed Mike is divorced and Gordo is happily married and just acts like a lusty, single guy on air.

  15. Who gives a shit if he wistfully mused about the possible correlation between throwing bats and ALS. Quit being so PC. You would think Ticket listeners would have thicker skin, but I guess what we've learned in the past few years is that you can say anything you want over the air, just don't dare do it on the internet. The PC police are in full effect up in this mofo.

    ReplyDelete
  16. From what I gather, George is and always has been happily married. I think you might be thinking of Norm, who divorced and then got remarried last year.

@4:22 pm Anon: It's fairly obvious that you don't know what "PC" means. If anything, it is you who are practicing PC; as you seem so offended by Plainsman's rumination of Josh's thrown bats and ALS, you're driven to obsessively make post after post mocking a thought that you don't agree with. That's what the PC Police does, Anon: it attacks via mockery those ideas that it finds offensive; it tries, at first, to shut down the conversation by belittling what it doesn't like; it tries to shame or brow beat the general public; and if that doesn't work, it tries to go through legal channels (actually, it usually gets around to the legal system no matter). Thus, you are in phase one of PC Police work, Anon.

Know your terms. And get a life.

  17. Plainsman: The 7:29 pm lunacy was not my doing. That Anon committed one of the most disgusting offenses known to the comboxosphere...identity theft. And this is why, unfortunately, you need to verify. This Anon has no life and is going to to his or her best to bring this site down to his/her level of stupidity.

You're a scumbag, Anon. I understood your point all too well. It was yet another, in a series, of your snarky, oft purposely contradictory, always ill intended comments. You got called out and you couldn't take it. And it got to you, angered you, so much that you resorted to the lowest of lows: identity theft. You coward.

  18. "Jamoke?"

    "Brickbats?"

It's things like this and pushing your own odd lexicon ("STD," "Cumulo-Ticket-Overlords) that make so many people shake their head here. You try so hard to be quirky and iconoclastic that you just sound foolish.

This blog is OK. Could be great if you could take your ego down a notch.

    Delete away....

    ReplyDelete
  19. Anon, you don't like it start your own blog. Plainsman can use any words he wants. I wish SOPA passed so you couldn't post here. This is what's wrong with today's youth. No respect for anything. Good old fashioned beating by your old man would have solved this long ago. That's the American way. Not this cowardly hiding behind the internet.

  20. Same goes with the 7:39 and 8:40 pm. Fraudulent posts.

  22. HAHAHA. Norm just went off during the mix with the Musers about the computer not working. That was great.

  23. I have an STD. Well, and STD from me to myself: I have come to the conclusion that BaD has become the best show on The Ticket. I know there aren't a lot of Stars fans on this blog, but their interview with Trevor Daly today was very interesting. I also love the give and take between the analytical Bob and the gut-feeling Dan. And the thing is, Bob can get gutty on you, while Dan will all of the sudden go statsy. I think it's a great mix and a great show. I used to not think as such. The Hardline is either all gut-feeling Mike R organic I just thinks or Corby I just know because it sounds right to my mind. The Musers have that analytical/gut-feeling mix, but they seem to never really get to the heart of a sports issue. And Norm oscillates between analytical thought to sheer lunacy, all within the same segment and about the same topic.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Completely agree and I was thinking the EXACT thing during the Trevor interview today. I got in the car for lunch, heard them talking to Ralph and was thinking "shit all I'm going to get to hear is Stars talk during lunch today". Then Trevor came on and it couldn't have been more interesting. Bob and Dan are both so great, I can't really decide which one I like more (although I lean towards Dan since he thinks like I do); they just fit together really well.

  25. Tech Talk here. Is the stream built into theticket.com still wonky or is it my internet? I constantly skips like a warped record... still lots of stutter too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I concur, last Anon. It ain't just you. I've stopped and restarted (I'm still using TuneIn) and it's fine for a couple of minutes, then it starts up again (at all times intermittent).

In other news - and I know I've said this before - Jake _really_ has something. If I ever meet him, I'm gonna say, "Dude I don't mean to sound like a homosexual, but every time you open your mike I giggle." (Orgazmo, anyone?)

    ReplyDelete
  27. GREAT to see the conversation around here back to its normal civilized modus operandi.

A little birdie told me that Sirois got chewed out a bit by Norm today. It was after Donnie Nelson came on. Norm wanted to scuttle the upcoming Twitter q&a segment in order to discuss what Donnie had said. Upon returning from break, Sirois and Krenek were engaging in internet port actress talk. Norm curtly said to the effect "I don't know what you're talking about... anyway." You could hear the anger in his voice. Sirois and Krenek decided to put on their own show on Norm's HSO dime. Not a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Appreciate the notice, but I'm not entirely sure what happened here. Did Mike get chewed out on the air or later? I ask because of your reference to a little birdie, suggesting that his may have happened off air and your birdie is flying around insider Victory.

So, did they do the Twitter Q&A or they follow up on Donnie N?

Is the Twitter Q&A a worthwhile Norm segment? (I tend to like Norm better than the Confessor Nation, if the comments are any indication, so I don't like to see him forced to do cute stuff he doesn't want to do.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. No, not on-air.My source said it was post show production. No. As my post stated, they didn't do the Twitter segment because Norm was way too into the comments Donnie Nelson made, I thought I was pretty specific in my original comment. Norm was pissed off that Sirois and Krenek were goofing off. Audibly so. Norm brushed them off and went on to discuss Donnie's comments. When I say birdie, I mean a friend of mine works at the Ticket, OK.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm in for Jer this week on the board, and I can tell you that Norm wasn't mad at Sirois or Krenek. He was finishing up typing an email.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Someone mentioned the stream, and The Ticket website stream has been sketchy this week for me as well.

In Community Quick Hits last night, after the dog/tongue story, Jane McGary was brought up again and Danny asked,"I wonder if she's going to get a nice severance package?" Then he said, "Speaking of speaking of severance packages..." Mike said, "Indeed." Corby asked what he was talking about and Danny said something about somebody that just walked by. Mike said, "Hang tight."

Anybody out there know who that might be?

It starts at 3:36 on the Unticket Hardline broadcast from July 11th here:
    http://www.theunticket.com/usave-it/

    ReplyDelete
  32. My totally uniformed guess would be Mr. Blankeship

    ReplyDelete
  33. Also to add re: Norm's Twitter segment, he loves it. We've tried to get Norm to use Twitter more actually, but he's a little hesitant to. Which is too bad, because I think if he fell into the Twitter vortex, he'd love the damn out of it.

But no, he's not forced to do it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "he'd love the damn out of it."

Thanks, Jer. I WILL use that at my next family gathering..."I'm lovin' the DAMN outta these ribs!"

I don't think I've ever heard you guys use that expression on the air; Craig likes to use "blow so-and-so the hell-damn away" but I think you need to embrace what you just did. Really.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go refresh the CAPTCHA six times and post this.

  35. My given name is AnonJuly 12, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Is it just me or does Krenek not know his place? Dick Hicks, Sea Bass, and Ty know their roles. Krenek seems to think he is a co-host and tries to get as much air time as possible when he fills in.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Instead of a sweet song, I think Anon's little birdie pooped on him. I take Big Strong's and KT's word over a supposed insider any day of the week.

Anyone know who's taking over for the Hardest of Lines while they're at dry dock?

    ReplyDelete
  37. No, it's not just you. Krenek's a part of CdS. On that show, everyone is a host, all voices talking over each other. Therefore Krenek thinks he's in essence a host. Or at least that's the way it comes off.

By the way, the captcha on this blog is sheer lunacy.

  38. New ratings are in but I don't know how to get Men 25-54

    http://www.radio-info.com/markets/dallas-ft-worth

    Ticket 2.8
    ESPN 1.9
    FAN 1.0

Can someone educate me on what the CUME numbers mean? ESPN has higher numbers than the little one.

    ReplyDelete
  39. In sports talk, the only ratings that matter are Men 25-54. The Ticket continues to have higher ratings 5AM-7PM than ESPN and The Fan combined.

    ReplyDelete
  40. And, ESPN has high CUME #s because of Ranger games, but that doesn't equate to P1 listener status. I think they have a lot of people flying in to listen, but not dedicated listeners all day like 1310.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thank you Anon 10:02, that makes more sense to me.

On a tangent, if the Little One had (as has been discussed before, beat dead horse now) a strong signal and carried the Cowboys, et. al., wouldn't they be unstoppable?

Not trying to beat the (dead) horse, but maybe the Ticket doesn't want Ranger games as it would interfere with afternoon Bad / HL? But they did have Cowboys at one time.

  42. And a quick question to confirm my ignorance -

At the start of CQH it sounds like Jub Jub is saying "doing the greggo". I know several years ago they did a segment on this and Norm had asked why the spot was referring to Greggo. However, way out in east Texas that day I was losing signal and could not hear the end of the segment.

    What is Jub Jub saying?

    ReplyDelete
  43. He's saying "everybody loves community quick hits". Since it's in the style of Mick Jagger, it's slurred and run together. I was surprised when they had the discussion about it because it's never sounded like anything but "everybody loves community quick hits" to me.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To me it always sounded like "doing the Greggo". It amuses me to no end when they play the version with Corby saying "doing the Greggo" over the top over the song.

I finally got around to listening to the Pete Stein audio which was being discussed the other day (the "3, 2, 1, and your done). It took me back to a time where I despised the Hardline. I had almost completely forgotten how much I used to be annoyed by them. Greggo is such a blowhard know it all and Rhyner used to bring his blowhard level up to match his. I don't care what anybody says, the Hardline, despite its flaws, is so much better now than it was with Greggo around.

I was wondering if that was the impetus for Rhyner shedding his "Rhyner" label. Did he consciously want to improve his broadcasting by pulling way back on the apparently Greggo induced blow hardiness?

Also, F the captcha on this site.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Which is why they had superimposed versions of Corby and Followill saying "Doing the Greggo" over "Commmunity Quick Hits" (Corby's is in a more inquisitve tone, like "They REALLY think that sounds like that??")

    BTW, KT...you are my HERO.

    ReplyDelete
  46. New gripe. The current Ticket promos. They have to be an all time unlistenable worst, yes? Sweet Jack. Up your ticket. Raising Canes. JRs. Could we please just stick with the live spot? Texas Land and Cattle is alway full of giggles. Gordo and George trying to shoot each others wheels off with steak eating man or whoever else shows up. These keep me around and are not the instant punch out of anything pre-recorded.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Corollary to 7:44AM anon - I thought the livespots with Doocy & the Musers from a few weeks ago were absolutely hilarious. I think Doocy isn't allowed to lend his voice to any of the spots, so he's always forced to be in character, which makes it even better imho.

I admit, the CQH intro song has always sounded like George was singing "Pepper love, doing the greggo" to my untrained ears.

Has anyone tried the audio captcha instead? Waaaay worse.
