CHEAP THREAD-FRESHENER: Watching "True Detective" and Can't Get Enough of Matthew McConaughey?

Well, that's him doing those Reliant Energy ads.

Theater of the mind:  Rust turns to Marty and says: "You are wearin' the heck out of that outfit," and chuckles softly.

"Too much Corby, man."

  1. People talk about energy. About power. But what man can truly say he has energy, has power? We dance around the nature of control, but it's really chaos, beyond our control. You raise your hand, you raise your voice, and you say you have power, but when the time comes to settle your account, all you can say is your tried. You tried and failed, man.

  2. Nice. Nice.

For Fake Matthew McConnaughey comments, you have no other choice but to shop at My Ticket Confession.

Maybe the real MM is a Confessor.

I invite all Confessors to leave comments in the Matt/Rust style today.

But if you don't, at least end your comment with: ", man."

  3. Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but did everyone know that Gordo's website, gordonkeith.com, is no longer being updated? Now it shows his bio. I assume it's because he has Twitter and Instagram and doesn't really need his own website.

    Man.

  4. Alright alright alright. Not a fan of McConaughey and was somewhat offended when he became the de facto spokesman for the University of Texas. But True Detective is making me a believer. They need to just go ahead and box up the Emmy and send it to him.

  7. The Musers hilarious segment on the ridiculousness of the right wing conservative political ads was radio gold:
    - Stand up to Obama
    - Family values
    - Keep our guns
    - God
    - Screaming Eagles
    Great stuff

  8. Does anyone else listen to the unticket podcasts on the iPhone? That's how I listen to the Hardline and the last 3 shows haven't been uploaded. Work is not nearly as fun without it. I've sent the unticket an email, but never got a response. Does anyone know of any other way to download previous shows to listen to? I can't stream, it has to be downloaded.

Please take your political b.s. over to the Observer site. It's insulting. And by the way, the screaming eagle sound effect is a Gordo production value. And a second by the way. I'm one of those liberals. I find neither God nor family values ridiculous. I'm also from the Northeast, where the Democrats hold sway in the same way the GOP does here. If you lived up there you'd see scare/stand up to_ GOP member/candidate ads. When Bush was president, every Democrat's campaign consisted of I'll stand up to GWB. And they all use the same hokey devices and tactics, just like the GOP does here. So please grow up. Enjoy The Muser's faux ads. They're hilarious and there is more than a bit of truth in them. But be respectful towards others beliefs, and realize that "your side" isn't immune to such b.s., either.

  13. Geez, I don't think he was spewing anything political, just commenting on the hilarity of the segment. I mean the musers were specifically highlighting conservative ads. Of course dems throw out ones just as ridiculous.

  15. @Tim in Irving,

I am having the same issue with the podcasts app. Last episode was loaded on Feb 11th. It sucks would be an understatement. It's the only way I can listen to the Ticket at work. I miss it. Don't take the Ticket for granted, you will never know when you can't listen to it anymore.

  17. My God 2/16 3:44!

I was talking about the actual Republican ads the Musers replayed - not faux ads In case you didn't realize George is a conservative and he thought the ads were funny. And the Eagle roar in the one ad was real. I am sure the Dems put out equally ridiculous ads so ease up.

  18. Not to turn this thread back into Ticket host discussion, but I have some friendly Sean Bass analysis to throw out there.

I think he's a younger version of Norm.

Think about it...rather generic, superficial sports talk (yes, I'm aware of the SJ Sports 303 segment) but he usually just repeats stats or facts instead of giving in depth opinions. He doesn't seem to gel with the others as much. What I mean by that, is that his comments, jokes, or other little add-on comments are further out of left field than the others. When he hosts a show, he starts it out exactly as Norm does (going around meeting the crew.) I have plenty of other anecdotal evidence, but I think you get my point.

Now, Norm is a radio hall of famer and has been in radio for decades, so none is this is meant to be derogatory, but rather a way to explain what makes Sean stick out from the others.

I think pairing him with Jake has been an interesting combination. The other day, Sean mentioned a Mavs stat (something like they are 17-2 historically against some team) and Jake immediately said something like "that stat means nothing to me." The historical record thing is a common sports stat to throw out there as filler, but literally has nothing to do with the game that they are playing, or just played.

It's just a bunch of little things like that, that have helped me put a finger on what made him a different. All we need is for him to start yelling at callers on Diamond Talk and the transition will be complete!

  19. runitandrunitandrunitandrunitandrunitFebruary 16, 2014 at 11:06 PM

    @Jeff
Jake's "that stat means nothing to me" says a lot about Jake. While he is maturing before our very eyes, he's still the same guy who played a horrific points for sex game in high school and who to this day shuns the person who blew the whistle on the game. He's a naturally intelligent guy, but he lacks wisdom and maturity. Don't let the deep voice fool you. I think your take on Sean is pretty much on the mark. Though I don't agree that he doesn't mesh well with others. One thing I'm starting to notice (and it probably ties into both Jake's "that stat" sort of attitude and your point about merely repeating stats he reads on Fangraphs and the different Prospecti) is that when Jake differs from his opinion, he will quickly either back off or change his opinion somewhat to conform with Jake's. Which usually means there's a definite alpha dog-pack relationship going on and/or Sean's not as confident in his knowledge and understanding as perhaps the certainty in his voice leads one to believe.

As to the Muser GOP ads and the little back and forth going on: I think 2/15/728 does lack, at least in this comment, some tact and respect for people who hold some or all of those values dear. George being a conservative (a label that I don't think applies to him any longer, a label I be he no longer applies to himself) is a non sequitur. But I also think his or her sparring partner needs to get his or her facts straight. The screaming eagle is played in both the real and faux ads. Also who made you arbiter of what can and cannot be said and where it ought to be said?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @runit

Yes! When all the SBass hate started to flood in, I went back and listened to some previous SJ eps. I seriously thought Jake was doing a bit on disagreeing with Sean, just to see how many times he could get Sean to lay down on his opinion. It became laughable!

I'm mainly a weekday listener, hardly ever lend an ear to a weekend show or postgame. Sean's great at Tickers, doesn't usually bog down a segment, and occasionally will bring out a chuckle.
But, he really needs to Stand His Ground...sticking with an opinion and bringing forth a discussion is what makes the Ticket shine!

  23. @11:13 Your remark about Jake and Corby might very well prove to be prescient.

I'm right there with you on True Detective and the eventual thrashing we'll get from BaD and -especially- THL trying to get all next level with it. Already dreading it. I swear I'd rather they were into Downton freakin' Abbey.

Then again I mostly play music after WTDS, so it shouldn't affect me too much. I'm not a Corby hater but I'm no longer a P1 HLer. Used to think Danny was the tits but the more exposure he gets the less I like hearing him. See I Sorta (rock me ref to Danny's old band) did a play on McConaughey right there. You know the one where he says something about high school chicks and getting older. Rock me twice.

  26. For the record, if we'd had any Democrat ads at the ready to play, we would have. But we didn't. All we had available for the segment were Republican ads, and to be honest, that's about all I've seen/heard. They're going to be the much more entertaining fight to watch anyways.

  32. @544 and the rest of the gang..... please dear God, please, let's not turn this thread and site into a political battleground. Please. Please. Please.

Why defenders of Jake feel the need to tell us how smart he is, is, beyond me. Who cares? My brother in law has a PhD in computer science from Cal Tech. Other than in his field, he's a blowhard who think because he's an expert in one thing, he's an expert in everything. I also know several people with Masters degrees, and some of them are exactly like my brother in law. Just for the record, Jake seems like an intelligent guy. I know he has a Masters in communications or something. Good for him. But that has no bearing on him being or not being a bit of a Corby starter kit. I for one totally see how the comparison fits. I'm not saying it's a good or a bad thing, I'm saying that I can see some foundational similarities between the two guys.

For all those who were dreading True Detective superlative talk. It's already begun. According to THL, this is the best show ever. After years of Soprano's, Sons, Breaking, and Shield talk, now we have this. As my wife would say, "oy vey." Sometimes I wonder if Mike, Corby, and Danny have any memory of what they've said in the past, about anything. I hate to say this, but all three of them have become boring, self involved, dopes.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hate to disagree, but.....Ticket talk would keep me in the loop on Soprano's and Sheild talk when I didn't have access to the shows.

Don't like the subject, my radio has buttons on it, does yours? If someone doesn't like the subject matter or topic why listen? Options, Buddy, we have lots of them spread across two radio bands, satellite, and your CD collection.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well then, Gopher, why even comment about anything other than to say how much something kicks ass? If that's your bag, fine. Not everyone likes everything the shows or a show does. If they want to say so, then what biz is it of yours to tell them about the option they already know they have? Go give out your prescriptions somewhere else, buddy. Another P1 Wasteland is all everything is kick ass all the time. Critics need not apply. I think you'll find a nice home there.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Guy's , THL show talk goes way back. I remember Ally Mcbeal talk. I admit, I usually switch channels. I didn't mind so much when Greggo was part of it, but the bottom line {bottom-bottom}...it kills a segment!

    ReplyDelete
  36. More PhD talk. I had a PhD boss who might have known how to write and defend a dissertation, but she had absolutely no clue how the real world worked. I was amazed that she could find the office everyday.

    Ditto on keeping MTC politics-free.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think some people are arguing a straw man regarding Jake. Jake is smart AND he has a Masters degree, not BECAUSE he has a Masters degree. I too have known people who have post graduate degrees who don't appear to be great problem-solvers or deliver consistently sound opinions, but I know A LOT of people who can and do both AND are well educated.

I think Jake is smart, young, and sees life from a small, limited bubble of which he has yet to break out. I would rather hear him use his intelligence to voice an educated/researched, well thought out opinion, rather than many of the unresearched, uneducated, intellectually lazy opinions made by others on the station.

BTW, I don't know if his gig on BaD is off to a good start. On the occasional time I've listened, there's too much talking over each other and the chemistry isn't there yet. At this point, you can't say "It'll get there, give it time," because you don't know that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Count me among those who have noticed Sean Bass back off, just about every time Jake challenges him.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jake is a liberal elitist punk as well as Corby and Danny. Just because Jake has a Masters dont mean hes smarter than me or anyone else. Im getting real tired of his uneducated agenda. Mike was great when sweet Greggo was around but ever since then its been a mess of a program. Much more hoity toity film and music talk than sports. BaD is unlistenable as well. AGAIN stop talking about movies, video games, and television shows that no normal guy has ever seen and focus on sports talk. They need to fire Dan. Him and Gordo poison their respective shows. George used to be a good ol boy along with Junes but now Gordo has poised that show with his weirdness. Norm is the saving grace of the station even though he gets thrown off by Sirois at times. Get with the program fellas.

655, I think you mean 622. 622's comment is a piece of jackassery. Though I have to point out to you, 655 (and blergoyen, with respect to his comment about other Jake comments), that that bit of jackassery did not contain the straw man fallacy within it. Along with begging the question, the straw man fallacy is woefully misunderstood, and so, is often misused. Regardless, 622 is an asshat. My take on Jake falls in line with blergoyen's, misapplication of the straw man fallacy aside - no one on this thread has put forth a straw man.

For the record, a straw man is a misrepresentation of another's argument or position in order to make one's own argument or position appear stronger or correct. It's a logical fallacy. Therefore, stating an opinion about X, no matter how wrongheaded it might be, is not setting up a straw man. To claim X is arguing Y when X never argued for Y, but your claim that X argued for Y allows for your argument to easily topple it. . . .is setting up a straw man. No one has done such a thing here. In the years I've been reading this blog (very soon after its debut), I think I've come across a legitimate straw man, maybe, twice.

    Anywho.

I also second blergoyen's thoughts on Jake as BaD's producer.

  45. Runit - I don't believe anyone on here has argued Jake is smart BECAUSE he has a graduate degree. My point at 9:46 was that X misrepresents Y's claim stating Y thinks Jake is smart BECAUSE he has a graduate degree, and then X argues against this misrepresented claim. That is most certainly a straw man argument.

    ReplyDelete
  46. runitandrunitandrunitandrunitandrunitFebruary 20, 2014 at 11:26 AM

    blergoyen

Your 948 comment merely states your own opinion about Jake. Namely (and correctly), that someone can be smart and not have an advanced degree. However, in normative terms, having an advanced degree requires a certain degree of intelligence (at least in a particular field). So in a loose way, your statement is tautological. Again, in a loose (very loose) way. Regardless, there's no straw man here. Moreover, I just went through the thread, and there is no exchange like the one you describe. There is one comment that equates alma mater with intelligence (which only goes to buttress your well said 948 comment), and a few that point out (without naming what it is, viz. fallacy of appeal to authority) that just because someone is an authority in one thing doesn't necessarily mean they are in anything else. But again, no straw man fallacy.

Thanks for the back and forth, and I do find your Ticket analyses mostly on the money.

I don't mind movie and TV talk. The shows that interest me I listen to them talk about and the ones that don't move the needle get ignored. They neither dissuade me nor persuade me to watch them.

  58. I know I should be happy with the new rating for the Ticket but.....I'm a little disappointed. Good ratings = no change in show production. We can all attest that the quality of our favorite shows have gone down over the past 2 years (minus the Musers).

The ticket was my prime choice during every time slot back in the day. THL is a big joke. It's a joke because those guys seem to put in little effort and present ZERO original sports ideas or opinions that are based on facts. Hear that Corby and Danny? I actually want to log every segment and see how much actual sports talk is done. It's a joke because they expect us to put up with it and WE DO! THL used to be my show of choice and I would stream it around the house but now I punch out as soon as music is mentioned or when they simply don't know what's current in the sports world. IT'S WHAT YOU DO FOR LIVING GUYS! WOULDN'T HURT TO KEEP CURRENT.

THL is a joke because they make me turn and listen to B&S. How bad does a show have to suck to make me want to listen to B&S? Pretty damn bad....

Speaking of BADD. Ummm Ummmm I mean, I just think that..ummmm...well..well you see that...yeah just play the audio...Hockey. No wonder Gribble jumped ship, at least I had the option to change the dial out of impatience.

Phew. I feel much better now. I love The Ticket so freaking much that it pains me to even feel this way or paint these shows as horrible. I miss the days when 1310 was unchangeable on my dial. Now it's just another option and I hate that. I want to see this station get better. But as long as the ratings are solid..well it won't.

Thank you for reading my rant.

    ReplyDelete
  59. If you watched any of the webcam from the Super Bowl what you saw was hosts talking, but talking while their heads were buried in their laptop or phone or whatever. I think they are simply distracted and not really interacting with each other. I would say THL is the worst offender and it translates to what we hear on the air.

    Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ron, I think you are on to something there. One of the things that makes the Musers so great is the way they interact with each other. I NEVER turn their show off. But THL does not interact as much and most of the time they are obviously reading stuff off their computers. I will often turn off THL and go to ESPN or to Ben & Skin, especially when they start one of their long music segments. I didn't put that together until you mentioned it, so thanks for that. Having listened to the little Ticket since Day 1, I long for the old Hardline days. I'd better sign off before I get into the "good ol' days" syndrome.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I often struggle in my Ticket historical analysis in determining whether I along with many of you have good ole day syndrome or have the programs experienced marked degradation - perhaps its a blend of both. I get the sense of collective good ole day syndrome when I go back and listen to one of the 10 year old clips often posted on theunticket.com. Typically its nothing any more remarkable than what I hear currently. The human mind also tends to skew towards good memories through the lens of time vs. bad experiences. Having said that THL has seemed to skew very heavily towards music and hipster/trendy TV viewing. My bottom line: still better than the other guys IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  62. All the guys talking about how good THL used to be...guys, that was Greggo that made the show fun to listen, well, Greggo and Mike. Greggo ain't coming back! I think had they brought him back, say, within a year of the meltdown, it probably could have worked. The way the guys joke, it could have gotten back on track. But it's been 7 years now. Personalities have changed, chemistry has changed, and Greggo's wheels have gone further off, although probably pulled off by Richie is more like!

    ReplyDelete
  63. While I'm totally for the ridding this site of political, religious, and who's the smartest guy in the room and why talk, I'm not sure I see why Jake qua Jake's performance and all that that entails talk is now off limits. Why is this so, Pman? I didn't hear Jake say what Feb. 20, 5:02 pm said he did, but if he did, then that's something I would think is more than fair game. Indeed, I'd think it's something that should be commented on. I understand that you have a lot going on outside of this little blog, but quite frankly, if you posted articles more regularly, perhaps some of the less than informative avenues these threads have been going down of late...would not. Everyone needs a little direction. I think what you've been doing the last couple of years has on the whole worked. However I believe it's starting not to. That is, basically hosting a space for Ticket discussion without for the most part actually keeping up with the space or the subject at hand (The Ticket). Place keepers, using others comments as articles, and the once in a blue moon original article is fine...for a while. But we seem to be witnessing the downside of such a modus operandus. In all honesty I think it might be time to either hand over the reins to a trusted and capable Confessor (which, I believe, you hinted at doing some time back when you pondered the future of MTC---something you've pondered over often, I might add) who will keep MTC's standards and tradition going, or realize that, if kept going as it has been for the last year or so, eventually (probably sooner rather than later) the internet wolves will devour what was once something pretty dang special (and still is, specially in its better moments). Yes this is my little old subjective opinion. Yet if you take an objective look back over the, say, past 6 months' comment sections and articles, I think I'm more right than not. I love this place and I'd hate to see it go to pot. I'm not talking about a daily or even weekly article. Perhaps biweekly. Heck, with such a great group of core commenters, I bet a monthly article would more than keep this place on track.

    @cactusflinthead
I'm glad you do refrain from political talk. Though I think it must be said that nothing here passes for political talk. Ideologue talk, yes. Actual political discourse, no. That goes for both sides of the ideological aisle.

    @Anonymous Ron
    Excellent observation.

I feel your pain, however, nothing is so bad that it ought to cause you to listen to B&S! Kidding. Sort of.

  64. You can post about Jake if you want. I do so frequently. I like Jake. (And I like steak.) I was just wearying of the pointless back-and-forth on whether the degree precedes the smartness and the like.

This site has never been more popular. And yeah, I don't post as much as I used to.

As far as turning the site over to someone else -- hell, I can't even get ONE PERSON to volunteer an original article now and then. So I cheat and clip comments as new posts.

I must say that P1 Wasteland is showing some energy, and if I'm reading it correctly that site has more than one contributor for its posts. So I'm not concerned that the Confessor will be homeless.

Do not interpret that as a hint that I'm going to shut this thing down or disappear. I just can't write as much as I used to. That may change in the coming months as my doing two jobs during a transition period for me at my place of business will ease. I'm sitting in my office goddam now.

I try to check in at least daily to make sure that the Confessor is delivering quality commentary, and I'm still impressed with how good so much of this is, at least by the standards of online commentary. And how most people observe this site's unwritten rules on civility.

So the only beef I have with The Syllogist is that he needs to limber up his "ENTER" key and bust up his disquisition into nice, readable paragraphs.

There's great potential there. I check it nearly as much as I check this site.

  67. T4, I'm a fairly regular visitor to AP1WL. It's pretty good, but it's too rah rah for my tastes. Then again maybe this site needs a bit more rah rah. As of late MTC has been pretty negative. At least it has been towards THL and Corbles. I think the problem right now is that there's been nothing earth shattering since the whole BaD to the FAN imbroglio. Jake moving to BaD's poduca dis show from THL really wasn't that big of a deal. Same goes with the FM signal acquisition. We all knew that one was just a matter of time. Thing is, if memory serves, MTC was sort of founded around GW's departure. Barring another huge, momentous, station 'big leaguers' altering sea change I don't see MTC getting its A game back. Without a true crisis the commenters are left with nothing but nit picks and snipes and swats. Bottom line is there's no beef to chew on. Until that time this is basically where we're at today, sports.

  68. I've had a couple of correspondents wondering if P1 Wasteland was a crypto-Ticket site. I don't think it is. Just a fan site, like this one, kinda. Some solid strokes there.

10:52 makes some good points. Although I'm still waiting for my commission on the switch to 96.7 FM -- maybe inevitable, but this site was beating the drums for signal change for years and all I got was "it can't happen." And we specifically pointed out the foolishness of not moving The Ticket to 96.7 quite some time before someone finally got around to greenlighting it.

Fact is, the site has been generating content, sometimes substantive, sometimes fluff, for five years this June. The station has barely changed since then. We've explored every show in some depth except for Norm.

    Stale? Guilty.

What keeps me going is the fine commentary from faithful Confessors. They'll tell me when it's time to pack it in. When that time comes, and my current thinking is that it's not soon, I hope to feel that the site will have been a positive thing for the station, its cast, and its listeners. A little breaking news, some almost imperceptible influence on content (but it's not zero, I am certain), and a bit of fun along the way.

In the meantime, guess I'd better go back and hit that aging topic list . . . .

  77. Looks like Richie Whitt is only allowing members to even post comments on his blog now. That was pretty much the only reason people were visiting there any more, no? This also coincides with Pizza Buzz closing and him claiming that he sold his share for a profit.

  78. Shaggy - I posted this link over on the P1 site because I didn't want to kick Richie here. Kind of thought (think) that I didn't want to stoop to some of the RW bashers.

    However, this link is interesting.

  80. @Shaggy

Whitt cut off non member comments as someone besmirched his wife and reportedly used the "n" word.

I saw the comments regarding his wife and yes, they were over the top and out of line. However, she hooked up with him and has let him post pictures of her in a baby doll Santa suit and posted selfies of herself Kardashian style. Guilt by association?

I am not a member so as far as the "n" word, it may have been on the pay side. I never saw this word in the free comments.

The only N word I ever saw was narcissist. This appears to describe him very well yet it is not a vile word in the common vernacular.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Shaggy and ETP1
Something is going on with Mr. Whitt's site/Mr. Whitt proper. He started posting what looks to be a pre-scripted reply to the last few comment sections prior to placing the comment section behind the paywall. It basically read you can say what you want about me, but I won't tolerate anything being said about my wife or racial epithets. There are also some suspiciously worded (i.e., they all are written in near identical style) "look, there's no bigger Richie basher than myself, but taking shots at his wife and using the n-word is not cool"/"you go, Richie" comments to support his deleting of, and saying something about, said inflammatory comments. The problem is, is that I've yet to see any such inflammatory comment (of the nature Richie describes) posted.

Call me sick, but I'm a daily visitor to DFWSportatorium (but not a paywall subscriber). Along with MTC, DFWS is one of the first sites I visit each morning. I also revisit several times throughout the day. I've never once seen the specific sort of comments Richie admonished and presumably shut down the "free" comment section over. Yes I've read some awful, uncalled for, unfair comments. Many of them, in fact. Some utterly appalling. But none directed in a derogatory way toward Sybil personally (perhaps that she's an idiot for being with Richie or that she'll leave him, but not "hey Sybil, you are a so and so"). I've never come across the n-word or anything else like that. I find it interesting that this occurred directly after a few commenters began to, in a very businesslike way, sketching out and guessing as to the real story behind the selling of Pizza Buzz. Perhaps some were getting way too close to the truth?

I say this because I wouldn't put it about Richie to pull something like this (the comment section stuff). Recall his opaque machinations/hi jinx vis-a-vis Twitter when Greggo was asked not to join in on the Cowboy pre-post shows. Also recall his own 5 part Greggo tell all series. No matter what one thinks of Greggo, the private and confidential e-mail and Twitter conversations he obtained and published for all to see was at the very least shady and revealing of to what levels and means Richie will go to serve his purpose(s).

I'm not a Richie hater, but neither am I a fan. I believe I see him for what he is. What that is, I'm not going to write about. It's of no one's concern and I'm not so egotistical that I think anyone cares. But I do find some of his local media reporting (well, now his little "teases") to be of some interest. That's why I visit DFWS. Since the paywall was put into place, I mostly try to figure out what the tease pertains to. Yes, it's usually very easily "solved." Again, you can call me sick.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I visit DFWS and noticed there were no comments, but thot it was nobody commenting. Did not realize it was disabled. I too think Richie is a pompous, immature douchebag, but commented that the Sybil stuff was off base!

Wasn't it a nat'l punchline for a week and all over the ticket when it happened? Just thought that was weird! Made me think time is a flat circle.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Didn't notice it. What I have been noticing is that THL is no longer Mike and Corby with Danny producing and adding his two cents. It's become the Corby and Danny Show. It really is too bad they have ZERO competition in the market. If they did then MAYBE Mike would try. MAYBE Corby would try and even do a little fact checking once in a while prior to shooting off his mouth about damn near everything which he has little to no knowledge of. Man that show has become rotten. After WTDS I tune out until 4:30. At that time I quickly check in to see if they're talking about something substantive and to see if anything else of substance will be discussed in the 5 pm hour. If there's nothing at 4:30 I turn it off. No reason to return because the rest of the show is going to consist of Hear Corby Read The Internet segments while he and Danny ignorantly comment on them like two 25 year old hipsters who are desperately trying to fit in with the happenin' scene and the kewl kidz. No thanks. Rhyner never died. He just decided to retire from working while still being on the payroll.

  91. So, if there is a Rangers segment at any point during middays, we are all treated to the Sean Bass Show?!? extreme tired head.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hypothetically, what would happen to THL if Corby did check his facts, read stories before hand, not make outrageous superlative statements? I can tell you what would happen. He'd say something, Danny and Mike would agree, and the show would go to an extended commercial break 8 minutes early. Every segment. Most of the discussion on the radio (and in life) springs from people disagreeing about half baked ideas, bold claims, and general stupidity. If everything was well thought out and meticulously planned, it would be like having someone reading a stock market ticker tape. I seems to me that Corby gets called out so often on the show that all the Corby haters should get sweaty with anticipation of the impending crotch punt every time he opens his mouth. Personally, I enjoy the Mike, Danny, Corby dynamic. It reminds me of hanging out with my dad and my brother.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Sean is probably the only guy from the BaD crew that watches more than 20 full games a year. Why wouldn't he be a significant contributor to Rangers talk?

By the way, he also hosts Diamond Talk.

  94. unk

You make it out to be an either/or situation. It isn't. No one is asking Corby to be correct on all things. His opinions are just that, his opinions. Those are what spark discussion. What is being asked is that when he gives out an objective fact or is describing a documented situation, that he reports it accurately. Or at least with some accuracy. This requires a bit of reading or asking those in the know. It's very easily and quickly done. Yet this simple, and one would think mandatory, considering his duties, task seems to be something he's either unwilling or incapable of doing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I wish the Musers would have Charlotte Jones-Anderson on their show every week. She really seems to know what she's taking about and she's got a great sense of humor. I enjoyed her segment today more than the rest.

You nailed it. It's getting more and more annoying . Every time the word "Rangers" or "baseball" is spoken between 10:00 and 3:00, we have to hear know-it-all, cocky sniff, mr. Baseball chime in.

  98. I was listening to THL today talking about Aaron Hernandez. This guy does not need to go to prison. He needs to be locked up in a mental institution. The guy is a true psychopath. This person had everything! Looks, wealth, physique, talent, youth, ect, and thro's it all away as a cold blooded killer. He's the NFL's version of Patrick Bateman!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Aaron Hernandez is a true gang member. That's his way of thinking. He's basically in his element now controlling his surroundings in prison.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Frank Wastelander: how do you explain the one million ejaculate comments Gordo has made when George is present?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Not much to explain. He might of said it even if George was there. Point was there was no repercussions on air for him. If George would have been there, he would have taken his usual stance and distanced from the statement. Instead, everyone laughed and Gordo kept bucking outrageous comments.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I have been a BAD fan since the day they started (enjoyed Bob Sturminating people at night) and don't usually get the BAD bashing, including the Dan bas hinging - but I am seeing a little bit of it right now.

As they open, Dan is complaining about a lunch run by an intern. While I am sure some of this is a bit for the radio, he is really coming off as a bit of a jerk. Again, I am sure it is a bit, but still.

This leads me to a bigger issue with BAD as of late: their opening is great, but not the in-between time from the opening till the first commercial. Maybe they need to do some sort of organized, Mike's Mind-like segment or something. But their random rants seem to be about nothing and go nowhere. Seinfeld made a career off of it, but even his shows "nothing" was about "something."

But, at the end of the day, I will still be by the computer/app if I am available.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Anon 2:03

My point is that Corby is not a reporter, or journalist. He is a radio personality. He gets paid to because of his on air persona, and he will continue to get paid for that persona until the ratings dictate otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Frank Wastelander: so, you're saying that whether George is the or not, Gordo will say shocking things, and that the "repercussions" consist of George distancing, but that those repercussions don't stop Gordo from making further shocking comments, as he's done for 20 years. Ok....

    ReplyDelete
  105. @bradgilbert I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. Huge fan of Dan and the dynamic he brings to the show, but I was definitely put off by his tone and delivery of said rant. On one hand the base of his point was pretty spot on, but his delivery really made him come across as a jerk. Granted, I'm a 20 something tying to climb the ladder in my field so maybe I was a bit sensitive to the harshness of tone. Usually Dan is the one who sticks up for the little guy and is willing to cut slack.

    ReplyDelete
  106. unk

No one has ever said Corby is a reporter or journalist (there's a difference between reporting something and being a reporter - you can report without being a reporter, but you can't be a reporter without reporting; Corby is not a reporter, but he reports, e.g., EN and CQH). Your last point, while true, is not really the point you were trying to make your first go around. Your first effort basically said if Corby had his s*** together THL would be boring; as there would be little more than agreement among the three hosts. My point is that there is room for a modicum of preparation (e.g., having at least the gist of the story straight) in his approach and presentation. At times Corby is so off the farm where readily available and widely known facts (about any topic, really) are concerned, that I often wonder if it's all a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I missed the RW comments up thread. I haven't been there very often since he went behind the paywall and did not know that comments had been disabled. He is still on my feed but why I do not know. Perhaps I hold onto a bit of hope that he will come to his senses and either actually have some content worth buying or reverts back to the way it was. That seems less likely now that comments are disabled. The great unwashed mob has found a way to get under his skin. As long as they were taking digs at him he could withstand it, but when it came to remarks about Sybil he drew the line and that is understandable. I don't know if he made money on Pizza Buzz or not. I'd have to drive by a dozen or more pizza places to get to his and eating a pizza out of the box in the parking lot didn't sound very appealing.
My ex was a high maintenance diner like Dan. I have yet to meet a vegetarian/pescetarian that wasn't a pain to go out with. I felt sorry for the lowly intern. Get used to it kid, whether or not they informed you of how much a pain in the ass Dan can be, now you know. Had a double dose of Dan's world today.
It would be neat if Norm tossed reason out the window and forgot about what player might actually benefit the Cowboys and tried to plumb the chaos that is Jerry's brain. Does anybody truthfully expect them to do the reasonable and prudent thing with this draft pick? Take the wildest ass scenario you can come up with and add a little bit more insanity to it. Yet, Norm will be shocked and enraged yet again when Jerry makes another unfathomable trade and/or pick. Embrace the chaos Uncle Norm, stop trying to apply logic and reason to Jerry.

  108. We are slow to complain about things on the air. Morals/beliefs aside, hearing Corby/Danny rail on air about how we must accept the gay and everything they stand for is aggravating. The 6 minute shpeil was annoying. Mike was noticeably mute throughout it all. Again, this is not about what ever you believe in, its just annoying to hear that duo make sure we know how damn informed they are. WE GET IT.

I never saw the 'n' word used, either. some folks would throw in a few jabs about his wife..but it never seemed worse than what had been written before (during the holidays he put up some old pics of her to draw in $$...the comments that followed weren't too kind).

i find it pretty convenient that he shut down comments just as a previously posted link showed the extent of his failed venture. the only ppl commenting anyway were just busting his balls...no doubt in my mind he just concocted an excuse so he didn't have to deal with that daily.

if he weren't a world class Jag, i'd kinda feel sorry for him. at least he's got that top notch paywall money going for him, which is nice..
