Limited Sample Size

Before I get to a mini-review of today's BaD broadcast, I call to your attention that at least one Ticket on-air personality stops by for a cup of coffee now and then, because he sent me a redhead for your delectation and delight.

Slightly racier than my typical selection, but I thought it was very generous of him, and I thank him for dropping me a line.

*     *     *

My daily chores kept me in the Conestoga during much of BaD Radio today, so I got a good dose.   The lads were coming through loud and clear through the Crosley.

I thought it was very, very good.

Bob seemed relaxed and he made his points crisply and amusingly.  He didn't drone on or qualify every statement with something that sounded like he was trying to avoid committing to his point.  The guy is hard to beat on anything having to do with pro football.  I especially enjoyed his ripostes with Jake on football v. baseball.   I wonder if his co-hosting with Jake -- at least, that's how I interpreted what was going on -- who is pretty well-informed on things sportsy, whether or not you agree with him, sharpened up Bob's game.  All the flab seemed to have been trimmed from his remarks; he was sharp and seemed to be having a good time.

Jake's usually somewhat different viewpoints were expressed in an entertaining way, not smarty-pants or know-it-all.  I understand the point those who find too much Dylan-the-Argumentative-Teen in his presentation, but personally, I don't see it.  I can do without the politics, but I feel the same way about all the hosts on all the shows, so that doesn't distinguish him in a negative way.  I really liked his discussion of Adrian Beltre when they were discussing current fan favorites in Cool Metro.

T.C.'s Tickers were crisp and error-free, and I can only recall once that he popped on, and even then he may have been invited to do so.  I didn't hear the whole show, but what I heard would never make me think that T.C. was some kind of ratings cancer as some Confessors maintain.

These impressions are not an implied knock on Dan.  I haven't heard big chunks of BaD in quite a long time.  Only saying that I thought the show was a refreshing change for me today, and made me want to try to find more opportunities to drop in again.

As I said, a pretty limited slice of a show that's on for 3.5 hours every day.  Just saying I liked it today.

I let some comments through last time that, on reflection, I wish I hadn't.  I do a lot of comment review on my Note while on the run, so sometimes I'm not as reflective as I should be.

Perhaps time to click through to the Rules of the Confessional for a refresher.  Remember, you can have a great comment but if it wraps up with a gratuitous shot, your journalistic efforts may be for naught.

Thanks to all for your civil conduct on this site.

  1. I would love to see if you could write this same post if you listened for a week straight. Ratings yo.

  2. As a BaDD P1, I think your small sample size, though small, is right on. My only complaint is about Jake. And my only complaint about Jake is his obsession with race. He will never say X is a "black" or "Afro-American" thing. He will only refer to X, and in a most herky jerky fashion, as something socio-economic when he wants to speak of said demo. Yet he, for example, today referred to golden retrievers as "dogs white people are into." Jake does this in some regard several times each show he either hosts or participates in. Other than that, I've no problem with him. Basically he appears to see race in everything. If that's so, then be consistent. If not, then stop it. What, so are pitbulls "dogs black people are into"? Are chihuahuas dogs "Mexicans are into"? Are pekinese dogs "Chinese are into"? You see the inanity of it, yes? Of course.

I like Jake. I think he's a good guy who is trying to figure it out, who is starting to go deeper in his worldview, who is moving slowly if not painfully past his Dylan the Argumentative Teen past. I also think he is excellent when it comes to pure sports talk--whether you agree or disagree with his point(s).

But I wish he'd get past the silly Grantland, "meme," funny Twitter guy, smartest guy in the room like the fraudulent Olbermann who in actuality didn't go to an Ivy League school, bag of turd disguised as a prize. I think Jake has so much to offer. I wish he'd move past this silliness. I'm right with him in pointing out racism and injustice. But don't cheapen it. Like we have the term Nazi.

    Related.....

I think I would agree with your assessment of the week sans Dan if you had posted the same post, but Dan was the host, not Bob. Meaning, I honestly believe that they are a bad (no pun intended) pairing. That, they are both such strong hosts, they can overcome the mismatch that has been forced upon them. However, if given their own shows, you'd have two amazing shows.

I hope this eventually happens. Obviously it won't anytime soon. But the way things are going......

Last thing. I've been catching more and more of Le Batard. I must say that it is very very strong. To the point that, if it is true that 103.3 is going to have him as their new morning-early midday show, I for one will for the first time begin to flip between The Musers and someone else. To the point, perhaps, that, one day I will check in with DnM during the appointed times when my favorite bits or segments will air, but overall will listen to Le Batard.

  3. Fair review but something is causing their ratings to plummet. I've never listened because I simply don't like them so I can't really speak to the decline since Jake and TC joined, but as there has been a dramatic slide, I'd be curious of your thoughts on potential causes.

  4. Why am I listening to a couple of white millennials tell me about the greatest rap albums of all time?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I too like Jake. TC has been noticeably more quiet in the last few weeks. Bob is great especially during football season. I have discussed what I think the main BaDD Radio problems are, so I won't beat that dead horse again. Tom Grieve and Cowboy pressers are not going away.

Regarding the stream, I am in Arkansas so my only access to the Ticket is by streaming. What I have found is when you lose connectivity even for a second, the ad is going to play again when you re-connect. For example, when I am listening on Wi-Fi, and pull out of my driveway and lose Wi-Fi connectivity, the ad will play. If I lose over the air signal and pick it back up, the ad will play. I agree it is frustrating as all get out, and I wish they would fix it. TuneIn has worked best for me. It was good for a couple weeks, but it is getting bad again with the ads.

  6. I've got the old streamtheworld player bookmarked on this computer and it has been fairly reliable, but this week for some reason it plays ads OVER the radio stream, constantly, and I can't shut it off. I tried going to the Listen Live button on the Ticket web page, and it appeared to be completely down.

  7. Sorry Plainsman, Noon-3 on Friday was awful and the last segment with callers saved it as a whole before the Cowboys presser.

Since it is SummerSlam weekend, I'll give rasslin' terms for the show: An Upper-Midcarder with two “Vanilla Midgets”. AKA two monotone voices and a wannabe wisea$$.

The 1:30 News segment regarding the Baylor/Texas Monthly issue was at fault with me the most. Mainly due to the fact that this case of a transfer was too close to those which occurred to Oregon Ducks basketball in the spring of 2014 and the issues regarding that coach Dana Altman knew and when. Specifically, a player named Brandon Austin who transferred from Providence. Too many parallels not to mention. THL failed too.

THL and Jake didn't help with the lack of knowledge of the domestic violence past of the members of N.W.A

    @ColoradoP1,
Remember that streaming does not make them money, it costs them money as well as podcasting. Radio has the same issues as cable/satellite who has the issue with cord-cutting.

  8. I'm gonna guess it was The Pope of Porn himself, Ty Walker, that sent in today's redhead. Yes?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Pman, to me both Thursday and Friday BADD radio were very very good, but it goes back to my original complaint...There were much fewer voices. And that's not an indictment on anyone currently on BADD, there are just too many of them.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Boo!, I agree with that. Too many voices can screw up a show, and I do think BaD has trended that way in recent months.

Cirque used to be like that -- all the buddies wanted a slice of air time, and the Cirques were too nice to assert some janitorial control. But that problem, while it does pop up from time to time, seems to have been licked on that show.

I have written in the past that Bob and Dan would be better off with their own shows. Dan is a little like Corby in this respect: When he's placed in the role of Responsible Adult -- working with Musers, for example, or taking lead when Mike is away -- Corby is a lot of fun to listen to, sharp and yes, even prepared. Similarly, when Bob was down adopting his child and Dan had to wield the laboring oar for a lengthy period, he was also quite good, I thought.

  11. Not only did I think BaDD was excellent on Friday with Jake co-hosting but I also thought Machine aka The Machine aka Mike Marshall aka @machinesports was very good in the producing role. I give him major props for his music returns on Friday especially his nod to some cool post grunge late 90s stuff like Oleander "I walk Alone" which I linked here for your enjoyment. Good stuff Mr. Machine

  12. Shaggy, going off the filename I'd say that's Rick Arnett who's bringing almost-NSFW readheads to the party.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Generally agree with your assessment, but I could do without Kid or Play or whatever his name is. In fact, when I perceive that Bob is headed for a lengthy (over 1 minute) discussion of early-90's rap, I typically find another station to listen to.

    ReplyDelete
  14. My that redhead is smoking hot. Definite 4 pointer candidate.

It brings me such joy to see the Cowboys struggle in pre-season. The arrogance of management (Jerry) to think they can just roll w/out replacing DeMarco Murray is laughable. Just another example of why this team will NEVER return to glory. Sure they'll mix in a 12-4 season now and then but, as long as the wild catter is still calling the shots this thing will be mired in mediocrity.

BaDD Radio is still terrible thanks to 2 people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I missed out on commenting on the previous thread. Lots of complaints about THL's throwing down edicts of what sucks and what doesn't in the comments.

A lot of us have listened to Corby for many years. Just a question...how does Corby sound to a new listener? The voice, the message...I really think a new listener could be annoyed by him rather quickly. Add in frequently-comatose Mike and the Dark Cloud, I don't think it's too hard to understand why THL isn't growing.

Say what you want about B&S, but at least there's some enthusiasm there.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Dan is absolutely horrible no matter if he's paired with Bob or hosting himself. I don't think he brings anything to the table and his sports knowledge is among the lowest of any of the hosts. I have my complaints about Jake but I have to say he's a huge upgrade over Dan. I thought the BaDD with Bob, Jake and Machine was an upgrade over the real lineup.

  17. gonna call a spade a spade, if not for ktck, bob and dan would be remembered on par with the Hot Spot and maybe if they're lucky mentioned in the same sentence as Pete Stein. they would've enjoyed 1 book, then booted back north of the Mason-Dixon. its no accident, they took a paycut to stay. they know their limits and showed their gratitude after taking a walk to the curb and seeing what Rhyner built them.

  19. So, if you're theory is correct, then why didn't the others you mention succeed when they were on The Ticket? I guess I'm not following you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @10:51 - The same reason Jason Garrett gets credit for masterminding a 12-4 single-handedly after 4 years of .500 and no playoffs? I don't know BaD's historical ratings so I'm just theorizing.

  21. I actually love the mix of over sportsy Bob and apathetic Dan. I think Jake may be better as on air talent than he is as a producer. Could it be that they actually miss Gribble?

  22. The Musers musing about Tarzan's supposed greatness is what makes these boys superheroes. Funny segment.

    ReplyDelete
  23. And then Gordo has to get all NPR voiced and talk about campus sexual assaults and how men view women......only to go on a few segments later and ponder why can't we do what's "natural" and do away with monogamy.

Gee Gordon, where does one begin with you?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Tarzan talk and Dr Carlton Maxwell made my morning. Mix in some serious talk about campus life for women and today was a good day for The Musers. Gordo hijacking Biggest Show Coming to Town remains a beat down.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anon 8:00 - I guess we will have to disagree. I got nothing out of this and thought it was a big reach to just fill a segment.

On another thought, I head Gordon discussing the disappearance of DA Susan Hawk. Wondering if Corby will include this topic concerning his friend-from-childhood in Community Quick Hits.

  26. We need more Fake Mickey Spagnola. Brilliant.

  27. Wow, nothing but commercials on the stream since WTDS. Haven't had this problem in a while.

  28. @ Rhinosaur...I think the newer listener are the ones who may like Corby. I think it's the ones that remember the greatness of the old Hardline that don't care much for him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've been hard on Corby about not addressing the double standard on discipline at OU, so I will give him props for calling the Joe Mixon situation disgusting yesterday. But he only brought it up because of the current mess at Baylor.

And he's still got a ways to go to shame Mixon the way he and Danny went after frat boy Levi Pettit.

Any chance he will ever come up for air long enough to ask Switzer about Mixon?

  31. the musers 815 segments are nothing more than dudes trying to be the View. its their version of "unplugged" force feeding the masses to their feeble-minded POV.
its not a punch out, its pure accidental comedy

  38. Man we almost made it through THL without uninformed Danny and Corby's gun rant. Somebody should really tell Corby he sounds like an idiot when he says machine gun. Yes Danny, people do need to walk around mindful of their surroundings with a way to defend themselves. It is called situational awareness. Again, if any of Corby or Danny's family members are in grave danger they are going to beg for good guys with guns to be around.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm not a gun enthusiast or even that knowledgeable regarding guns, but Corby thinking Wal-Mart sold AK-47s is laughably dumb.

I know the Hardline's been getting a steady stream of nut kicks here and on Reddit...but sheesh...it's deserved most of the time.
