Guy's Night Out Featuring Many Callipygous Young Women

I was working the North 40 this afternoon and, being north, I went looking for  .  .  .  Tight Ends.

Yes, I'm as embarrassed as you are to make as your destination a Hooters or a Twin Peaks or a Tight Ends or a  .  .  .  ohmygod, wait for it  .  .  .  Tailgaters.  But after parking some distance away I made my way in.

Guy's Nights Out are interesting.   I've been to a few. You don't go to hear The Ticket, because you can't.  They have speakers set up, but they might as well pantomime the show for as much communication as takes place by the hosts on the air and the (mostly) guys who have gone to hang out.

Corby and Mike share a giggle at this afternoon's early hours of GNO, with an admirer attracting the attention of my camera's autofocus, although I thought I'd locked the focus on the lads before snapping.
And hang out they do.  The place was packed before 5 PM.  Having a good time, but almost no part of that good time has anything to do with The Ticket.  I saw Craig Miller (said hello, shook his hand) and George Dunham hanging out, talking to the P1, but in general, it's a large number of men of all ages -- a surprising number of gentlemen of a certain age quite possibly having passed out of the demo -- gathering as kind of a Ticket-liking community but who don't seem to have much concern over the fact that a show is going on a few feet from them that they can't hear.

Tight Ends was interesting.  I am told it was formerly a Quaker Steak & Lube.  I saw a few people who were fully clothed that I thought might be members of management including one real stunner that had about her the mystery of the Levant.  For the most part, however, the most identifiable employees were fetching young women who were, as they used to say in the middle part of the last century, "scantily clad."  I kind of felt sorry for them.  Yeah, I know, no one sold them into slavery and made them wear these ass-revealing outfits.  On the other hand, I found myself wondering who they were.  Students?  Single mothers struggling to get by?  Or just attractive young women who can make more money doing this than doing something featuring, oh, say, a future?   I don't mean insult -- this is hard work and they put up with a ton of BS from men drunk and sober and even act interested in their misdirected charm.  But it could hardly be more exploitative.

But I must say -- they were all pretty damned adorable. And it cannot be denied that there were some absolutely phenomenal asses on the payroll there.

I can't figure this picture out.  These are the outfits, that's the mortifying overlabeled ass-featuring design.  But the only 107.9 The Fox I can find is in Fargo, North Dakota, which does not seem to have a Tight Ends.  Maybe one of you know what it's about.
Struck up a conversation with a couple of nice guys who let me set my drink and tablet on their table.  Which is a good a reason as any to head to Guy's Night Out.

  1. Ah yes, more fun with Switzer.

    What a swell guy.

  2. Nice pic.

Did anyone hear the 15 for 15 on WTDS followed by Sturm saying at the intro of Friday's WTDS that this is the very last one ever? Say it isn't so?!

    1. I heard that also and thought it was strange. Did he mean 15 for 15 because we know WTDS is a huge hit?

  3. Like mike said in the 15 for 15, if management did one day decide to pull the plug on wtds the listeners would revolt. I know I and many other p1's would pester the powers that be continually. Pound for pound it provides more laughs than at any other time in the broadcast day.

  4. Ty Walker Chicken said on facebook that WTDS would not be going away. Maybe it was just a gag.

  6. Is that the standard, nationwide Tailgaters uniform?

Plainsman, your girl Kelly McClure decided to dust off her whistling bulldog spot during TSJ yesterday. I guess she wasn't' getting the kind of clientele she wanted from the newer ads. So classy, so Oliver.

  7. Yeah, I heard that old incomparably cheap "Bulldog" wolf-whistle "thanks -- hmpf" McClure ad on the Teebox Saturday morning. And had exactly the same thought. Maybe she thinks the weekend morning listener -- high net-worth, mind you -- will be attracted to her practice by that indescribable, invariably fire-engine-red clad, bustline of hers. Can't wait for her next commercial incarnation.

My recollection is that the old Tailgaters outfit was not quite so demeaning as this Tight Ends ensemble. As to whether Tight Ends is a chain -- don't think so.

  8. Always enjoy the part of The Ticket Super Bowl trip where the boys bitch about their free trip to the Super Bowl. Nauseating.

  9. What was the ladies b trippin show? I must have missed this at some point in the past or it must have been over quickly.

  10. Very brief experiment in Sunday night programming. If you sneezed you missed it.

  11. Cat met some chicks (I think one or more of them might have been either Ticket Chicks or promo people at some point) and gave them a show on Sunday night that was basically a 'here's what girls think about guys, what they want, how you can improve to get a girl' thing. It was a disaster. If memory serves, one or some of the JV were calling in with fake issues. The chicks were basically what passes for country music loving, gimme a bro with a white pickup named Rowdy or Harley or Ace who also happens to be super hot with a fat bankroll, AND a GREAT sense of humor (which is the most, cough-laugh, important thing) guy. Ya know, a typical uptown Dallas D-bagger. They sounded like idiots. Tons of complaints. It was obvious the JV weren't thrilled about it. And during Cat's MTC AMA, he either lied or 'got semantic' on us by saying no JV in the past year or so (at that time, at least) had approached him to do a show. Of course, that was denied by more than one JV. All in all, it was an aborsh. And it was a one and done deal. Maybe Cat got laid or something out of it. Who knows? What he didn't get was a show.

Now if he'd just get rid of The Local Ticket. Oy oy oy is that a punch out.

  12. I meant they were basically describing as a desirable guys what passes for a country....etc..

  13. 1. Ladies Be Trippin' was an awesome trainwreck. I think they may have actually done 2 shows? If anyone has any recordings of the show (or shows), I would love to hear them again. The BaD Radio guys played some clips and discussed it starting around 47:15 of Episode #239:

    http://sturminator.blogspot.com/2013/10/2013-bad-radio-podcasts.html

    2. The problem with ads just randomly interrupting show content on the stream is back, unfortunately. It happens regularly on the SportsDay Talk app and also in the usave.it recordings of the shows. I had to stop streaming BaD Radio the other day because it happened like 5 times just in the first 30 minutes -- nothing could be more frustrating, especially when the ads interrupt a host who was saying something that I was really interested in. Little Ticket, please fix this!

    3. Finally what's up with the sudden lack of podcasts? Nothing has been put up on iTunes since 1/13 except for a couple BaD Weekly Wrap-Ups. Is the station down some interns or did they just decide to give up on it? I used to rely on the podcasts to catch some segments from the Musers and Hardline. Little Ticket please resume the podcasts!

    1. The whole podcast/streaming situation with the little one really annoys me. Do an iTunes podcast search for the Fan. They have nice glossy photos with individual podcast for each show. The tickets has no image, updates irregularly and when it does update it's the top 10 that has shortened/edited segments.

    2. It is out of our hands. We're trying to switch hosting sites and the feed isn't working. Trust me when I say it's not just someone saying F it, no more podcasts. We're just waiting for the technical end of things to get straightened out.

    3. Thanks for checking in and letting us know Justin. I'm sure you see our point of view and when no one addresses it, it appears that our concerns don't matter. We appreciate the feedback.

    4. I understand for sure. Trust me I get a little annoyed as because the podcasts help me catch up as well. Like I said guys like Fahy(or me when I'm filling in)and Jake have every intention of keeping you guys up to date. We're just being shafted by multiple technical issues right now. Also I know the shortened segments thing is a bummer so I'll keep that in mind when updating it.

  18. Barrett Sports Media (http://sportsradiopd.com/) apparently has annual rankings of local sports shows, and they're publishing the results this week:

    http://sportsradiopd.com/2016/02/americas-top-20-local-sports-afternoon-shows-are/
    http://sportsradiopd.com/2016/02/americas-top-20-local-sports-midday-shows-for-2015-are/
    http://sportsradiopd.com/2016/02/americas-top-20-sports-morning-shows-for-2015-are/

Results of relevance to us here where we live today, sports:

The Musers are #4 in the morning, The Fan is #17
    BaD is #7 midday, G-Bag is #10
THL is #9 in the afternoon, B&S is #15

  19. Can someone convince Corby to stop doing the woman voice, it induces an instant dial change

    ReplyDelete
  20. @birq:
This is the first year of Barrett surveying radio executives.
    This was his methodology:
"The 35 executives who voted represent 23 U.S cities and 15 different broadcast companies. I sought out smart and experienced industry people from a number of organizations across the country because I wanted the results to be balanced and without company bias or geographical influence affecting the totals."

In review, if you work in a top 10 (actually 11), it was difficult NOT to be listed. The smallest media markets with a show ranked were Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Memphis.

BTW, I think that Super Bowl Week with National Letter of Intent Day (aka Signing Day) make for the worst week ever in sports radio.

  21. @11:12 ummm, yeah, gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. Corbys overly critical fake girlfriend voice is pure gold.

  22. The webcam stream has been a disaster today. Didn't help when Norm ripped out some cables with his cane. But it's now 6:00pm and I'm listening to the audio stream because webcam audio sucks.

This has also been the worst year in my memory for video tracking on the wireless segments. Major league fail.

  24. Did anyone listen to the Ryan Leaf interview yesterday afternoon on ESPN? I was flipping stations during a radio break and he just happened to walk up to Cowlishaw, sat down and gave a riveting 10 minute interview. Nothing was out of bounds, and he is not the same douche he was 20 years ago. Prison and age has given him some foresight into his life--I am glad I caught it, and I am glad he is a better person now.

  28. I do find it interesting how Jake "relates" to inner-city, African-American, hip-hop culture. Specially seeing how he was raised in, hangs out, works at, SWPL Land.*

Understand that, "relating" and "liking" or two different concepts. Jake often says "relates" vis-a-vis black hip-hop culture.

    *Stuff White People Like

And listening to Sean get all Norm street creddy is pretty damn funny.

For the most part I dig TSJ. But someone needs to tell them that once you hit 30, to a early to mid 20 something, you're old. So stop trying so hard to bro down. Your best days of bro-dom are behind you.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Gotta defend Jake here: My lord, look at all of the whitebread youth who "identified" with rock-and-rollers not only during their impressionable youth, but as they aged, even though they had not the slightest connection with the actual kind of life that those guys led. And in any event, I've heard Jake talk about that music on many occasions and it has never seemed to me like he is trying to convey the impression that he has shared some kind of cultural experience with poor urban blacks. Me, I'm older than Jake but I still love the music of my formative years.

And you know something else? The Ticket, and Jake in particular, has persuaded me to pay more attention to hip-hop. I'm never going to be humming this stuff or buying into the misogyny/murder themes, but there is real musical value in some of it. (Also a lot of crap-doggerel per artist.)

No problem with Jake's musical enthusiasms.

  30. Craig Miller thought Lady Gaga was "chest thumping" at the conclusion of the National Anthem.

When I saw that, I instantly saw it as her touching her heart, and I thought she said something like "what a country," or something that had "country" in it, goes along with that gesture. Dunno, could be wrong.

I thought the halftime was great. Could have used some sharks.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, uh, that's why I made the distinction between liking something and identifying with it.

I can like hip-hop; its pulse, its cadencing, and even its varying messages of self-empowerment, misogyny, defiance against the authorities...I can find all of these things exciting displays of power, of mastery over my environment on my terms through another's words and accompanying music. In that very same way, as you say, many a whitebread youth identifies with pop/rock artists. True enough. Gagreed. The difference here is from where these phenomena arise: One, whether we feel comfortable in acknowledging it or not, finds its genesis in race; the other from, at heart, the same sort of rebellion against "the man" since Eve plucked the fruit that fateful, kairotic moment. The latter, regardless of one's belief system, is universal; the former, while very much grounded in the same universality, has also that o/Other component to it that, is exclusive from your garden variety, teenage-angst-ridden (often these days lasting until late-middle-age and even beyond) "everyone's keeping me, the real me, down" sort of thing. The o/Other facet here is something that only those who are able to experience it, can. It is such a deep, foundational part of that culture and its expression--in all modes--that it is impossible to identify with it in any sort of meaningful sense if you are not a part of said facet. It doesn't, however, preclude "getting real into it," as I said above. It does, though, render any important connection a--e.g., our man in question--can truly have.

By the by, a good deal of hip-hop/rap music comes from middle-to upper-middle-class African-Americans. They ain't all "so poor, so black," as Blitzer would say.

And Jake did say that he identified with it on this past Sunday's SJ.

Besides, I didn't give him grief; I only said it was interesting. I like Jake. I really enjoy his sports talk.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I did give both guys grief about bro-ing it up. And I stand by that grief. I should add that I also dig Sean's sports talk.

  33. What is Computer talking about?

Ronald Reagan got rid of music in schools? What the hell are all these band fees I've been paying?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pman, I guhgree 100% about Jake. I'm a 40 year old white man who grew up in a small town in the Midwest but was very much into hip-hop in my 20s and early 30s (while living in Dallas for many of those years). I obviously didn't "identify" with it in terms of thinking that I could ever relate in any way to the experience of growing up with Black skin in urban America; I appreciated the music in large part for how it educated me and opened my eyes to real issues and problems in this country that I previously knew nothing about. (When you grow up in a state that is 97% white, it is very easy to grow up believing that racism no longer really exists except for those few nutjobs in the KKK down south.) I kind of lost touch with hip-hop after getting married and having kids, and I credit Jake with helping me keep current on some of the new stuff such as RTJ.
