Can We All Agree on This?

I'm glad to see that "Not a Podcast," starring Justin Montemayor and Mike Marshall, seems to have found favor among Confessors.  It's a pretty slick listen on a Saturday morning:   a little slacker, a little millennial, a little snotty, a little hip -- but well-prepared, good chemistry, some interesting takes, some interesting use of language.  The two very different voices and energy levels attract the ear.    Sometimes -- OK, a lot -- the show is Machine-heavy, but they're working on it, you can tell.  I tune in.  (Interesting dynamic emerging between NaP and Cirque, by the way.)

In an earlier post, I threw out the idea that "Not a Podcast" is not an attractive name for the show.  Despite Justin's denial in these very pages, seems like a jab at Jake and T.C.   Its phrasing is negative, almost apologetic, a downer.  And it's not descriptive of what the show is.  Bad name.

To my surprise, this drew quite a few comments.

To my further surprise, there seemed to be a gathering consensus that the name of the show should be "Monty + The Machine," pronounced "Monty and The Machine."

It's their show.  They can call it what they want, or what the Western Hemispherical Catman wants.

But for now, I'm going to call the show "Monty + The Machine," unless Justin advises that he prefers "Monte" as the short form of his name.

You have my permission to shorten this to "M+M" in the comments.

I will also entertain other names for the show, perhaps something a little less quotidian, a little more clever.

And no, "The Show That Melts In Your Mouth, Not In Your Hand" will not be acceptable.  Although  .  .  .  .

But for now it's "Monty + The Machine."

"Plainsman, you are so wrong.  More Machine."

I'll be out of town for a week.  Keep things light, Confessors.

  1. Machine = unmerited FIGJAM. Monty = Greatness.

  2. That's rather harsh. I like Machine, and I especially like the contrast with Justin. Once they fine-tune their balance, it'll be a heckuva showgram. There's a little Bob (Machine) and Dan (Justin, although not so much) in that pairing.

  3. I think P-Man nailed it. I've never been able to really pin down why I like it, but it's like P-Man said - to me they sound like total bros that talk with abbreviated words and sound like this is barely worth my time. But at the same time, they're well informed and now it's a weekend thing with me. I have no idea what they look like, but I picture the two bros in the Geico commercial doing a prettayyy, prettayyy good sports show.

  4. One thing I love about Machine is he is very knowledgeable about the Mavs yet he is not a homer. Homers like Sean Bass with the Rangers are an immediate turnoff for me.

  5. Ranger homerism has been rampant this week. Several shows questioning why the Rangers aren't picked to win the division, or even picked to win 85 games.

I don't even follow baseball closely, but seeing that a young Astros team had a meteoric rise last year and Seattle has improved their team, and the Angels having one of the best players in baseball...yet the Rangers should be "without question" the leader of the division?

Low win predictions means the division, as a whole, is better. There's no more 100-loss Astros to beat up on anymore, and Seattle probably won't be as horrible.

Yet, Ticket shows blame some sort of "media bias" in not thinking they'll be good. I just didn't understand what I was hearing.

    1. The rangers have a top rotation and are the defending division champs. The rangers and astros should be neck and neck all year.

  6. The stream volume has been all over the place this week. This morning seems especially messed up. Can't hear the segment, then goes to commercial and it's BOOMING. Anyone else notice this?

    1. I've had to stream this past week and also noticed the loud commercials.

  7. It's called Not A Podcast. Funny you think you have the clout to just change the name of the show to whatever you want.

Can't wait for the golf tournament this week. Praying that Jack & TC fail miserably.

Pull for Donnie & Ty Walker Chicken.

You are miserable. I hope no one is praying for your failure.

  10. Yeah, lighten up, Francis-nonymous.

  12. I'm loving the April Fools open...This is another perfect example of why The Little Ticket is so great!

  13. Couldn't listen to all of M+M this morning, but heard some good baseball talk. Plus, Machine said "strat"nstead of "strategy", so my Saturday is already off to a good start.

  14. Yesterday's golf event was one of the best things the ticket has ever done. Bravo to all the participants. TC especially committed to the bit in his Rickie Fowler garb. George reacting to Jer's 3-inch putt left short is an all-timer.

  15. The golf thing on Friday was classic, brilliant, we can do what they do but they can't do what we do Ticket.

Now, count me as a M + M P1. But. The shortening of terms-ese is a total Sirois thing. Mike refers to sushi as sush, etc. They've been doing it for years. The Musers used to poke fun at Mike for it. Saying he's soooo laid back and too cool for school csdual that he can't even complete words. This was a few years ago. That both M + M are CdS exes might point towards a heavy in influence.

  16. Aargh. Casual, not csdual. Damn fingers.

  17. My 53 year old sister shortens her terms. Think all people who want to be cool / casual do that. Or all people who wish they were 30 years younger. I say whatevs to that.

  18. I think it's very cool that the crew will undertake broadcasting from Augusta, but I fear the Corby filibuster.

  20. So everybody has a good laugh at one of Corby's Mexican drops, but Danny and Corby are appalled that there is going to be a reboot of the "racist" Speedy Gonzalez cartoon?

  21. I'm serious when I say this, 542, just stop listening. You're looking for droids that will never be found.

  22. BallBruiser is my new favorite character!

  23. I'm glad The Ticket is getting Sirois more involved, he is funny and did excellent in the April Fools Open.

  24. Jub & Corby laughing at Big Strong missing a 3 inch putt was absolutely wonderful. Was in tears at my desk when it happened. Brilliant.

Always funny when 2 radio hacks like Jake & TC criticize other sport radio personalities. Pot and the kettle comes to mind.

    Fake Nolan is amazing.

  25. Kudos to T.C. and Big Strong Jer for being cannon fodder for the golf bit. They took it in stride. I probably would have been going Happy Gilmore out there.

  26. Thanks for the youtube link 12:14. First time I have seen Big Strong Jer and didn't realize he has the ability to warp the space-time continuum.

  27. Mike Rhyner is my hero for wearing plaid shorts with a plaid shirt at the Masters! You can see the pic on Killer's Twitter feed.

  30. Man, that Jer / George audio kills me. Golf is now interesting to me.

  31. danny and corby gushing about how great it is being at augusta. vomit.

  32. So what do you suppose the tab was for the trip to Augusta?

    ReplyDelete
  33. @230pm. Why wouldn't they? Stop listening. Why do you listen? What exactly about The Ticket do you enjoy? If vicariously living through the pretty neat lives of others who you can actually on many levels not only relate to but also run into on the streets and they'll actually be friendly toward you isn't your bat...again...Why do you listen?

Sorry your job at The FAN sucks.

    @Shaggy
I betcha it ran higher than that.
