MTC Wishes Itself a Happy 7th

Please keep a good thought today for Your Source for Quality Ticket Journalism.  My Ticket Confession stumbled into this world mewling and howling and with no readers (except, apparently, Michael Gruber) on June 30, 2009.

I've very much appreciated your support and participation.  Ticket fansites and blogs come and go, but you've kept us in the game and kept me wanting to think up things to write about.

Still dealing with some personal matters but hope to have wrapped it up in the next 3-4 weeks.  In the meantime, keep those comments (and post offerings -- please) coming.

I suspect we will not get a mention on WTDS -- not even as a spare.  But we can still party.

  1. MTC shares a birthday with Apple Music, you must be proud.

  2. Not to mention Ranger Great Chan Ho Park and Vincent D'Onofrio. And it is also the anniversary of the celebrated discussion of the theory of evolution between Thomas Henry Huxley and Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (1860).

  3. Congrats MTC. Anybody listen to Not a Podcast today. Dang those boys are good. Best fill-in show around by far.

  4. Not a podcast is clearly the best jv show the little one has to offer these days. Wtds was in top form today with machine and Monty mixing with the hardline.

  5. I have to agree that Not a Podcast is becoming a very good tight combo especially when it comes to basketball talk. Many of the varsity tend to cut Cuban a little slack (much more than Jerry) however the NaP boys were tearing into the Mavs teambuilding strategy or lack thereof.

  6. Congrats to the best anonymous Little Ticket blogger out there...Is there a story behind the pseudonym?

  7. Thanks, Tangent.

No, not really, not much of a story behind "Plainsman." I'm originally from one of those states between the Rockies and the Appalachians that has some plains in it. It just popped into my head, much like the title of this website, for which there is also no particular inspiration, although I'm recalling that I may have written something about the site in one of my very first posts.

Can't believe I've done it all these years.

Before starting this site, I'd posted a couple of times on a message board during the Greg Williams crisis using the name.

Now remember, PhDazzle, you referred to Greggo as HeeHoo...as in He Who Cannot Be Named.

    Seems like an eternity ago.

And after all the predictions of The Little One's demise, the demise of terrestrial radio, the demise of sports talk radio, the gutting of the Varsity squad, and all the rest....nothing's really changed, and good old MTC is still in business--despite some of the best efforts of a certain especially nasty troll.

Scattershooting while wondering what ever happened to the measured, insightful and great Jonessa, the mercurial, temperamental, yet always interesting duck and cover, the jive-talking, mile-a-minute-classic-rock-jocking Atlantic Rhythym Section, and the ever honest, thoughtful, and GMF Brad Gilbert? I miss reading theirs and other great Confessors of yore comments.

I miss the old breed, but here's to the current crop of commenters who make MTC a pleasure to peruse: ETP1 (a longtime contributor), DA (my man with the radio insider plan), cactus flinthead (crazy like a fox, writes like a beat poet), Cody Patterson (the latter day Brad Gilbert), birq (always has a good point, and puts it across nicely), Shaggy (MTC would be lost without you, bud), and all the rest.

MTC is a speacial place on the interwebs. It's one of the few places where, on the whole, an honest exchange of analysis and thought occurs in a gentlepersonly, respectful manner. Yeah, it is special, today, sports. And we owe this to our congenial host and leader: Plainsman.

Thank you for this site, Pman. Keep doing whatcha do, playboy, and chase dat money.

    We'll halla.

  9. Rhines said one time that he realized when meeting James Taylor that Taylor was actually a jerk in real life and while Taylor had no interest at all in anything Rhinestone had to say, all Rhiner really wanted to do was to say "Man, I really appreciate what you do". Well, Plainsman, going that same route, I really appreciate what you do. You are one of my "stop-down" locations for all things "Ticket", and I wish you and this site many more birthdays. To everyone that contributes here, I thank you as well. Rich

  10. Jeez, Radesky and Rich, what nice comments.

Rich, I miss Jonaessa, too. I believe she became a first-time mother awhile back and either The Ticket or MTC may not be on her list of priorities anymore.

duckandcover was a good Confessor, but he tossed out some comments I deemed unnecesarily provocative and confrontational; the comment section threatened to become a duckandcover chat room. Maybe that would have been a good thing, but I came to think what he really needed was his own blog. I deleted one of his posts and he declared he was never returning. If he has returned under another name I haven't detected it.

ARS? Dunno. Brad Gilbert does still check in from time to time.

But, as you note, we have a fresh group of Confessors who honor the rules and throw out some good stuff. I'm glad it's reached the point where the comments are fueled more by what's going on with the station than what's in the posts. I'm not so vain that I don't see that the site has become kind of a genteel message board that dangles below some posts that don't really offer much new or controversial. That is OK with me.

When I cracked down on comments and monitored them for awhile, I thought it would fail -- either people would stop commenting, or the content would remain Internetty. But since I've opened it back up again, it's been pretty civilized, with the exception of the anti-IJB troll, who I usually delete but sometimes don't.

Personally, I think The Ticket will be in for some big changes over the next couple of years, and I hope to keep this going until something breaks up the gang or otherwise changes that happy daytime tune.

  11. Been a while since I drifted by the MTC. Seven years huh? Time flies.

    Keep on rocking Pman.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ok, Plainsman. Your last comment ended with quite a leading statement. Now THAT'S a tease if I've ever read one. So c'mon, what DO you think is in store, change-wise, for The Ticket?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would guess Norm wont be a Ticket full-timer much longer. I bet he will transition to emeritus status and will continue to host Cowboy post game shows or will call him as an expert guest periodically. Dude sounds like he is getting weaker and older. Best wishes Norman Hitzges

    ReplyDelete
  14. 252: Nah, I got nothing in particular. But, like 808, I can hear Norm lose strength from the beginning to end of a broadcast. I'll bet most of the hosts are financially set. You get the idea that every single one of the Musers could look back on a job well done and move on to frying larger fish, or stepping back from the fire entirely. BaD's upcoming contract is mentioned, and I'm thinking maybe they're still a little loose in the socket (but those soaring ratings have to make them think twice about a move, even for major clams, although what good are ratings if they don't get you the clams you deserve?). We're seeing three very solid weekend shows eligible for a weekday move: Cirque du Sirois, Shake Joint, and Not a Podcast (although the last continues to evolve and needs more time in the oven). We're seeing Cumulus continue to teeter.

So there are factors -- in addition to the sheer passage of time without a change in the major players and timeslots -- that suggest that sheer happenstance could break out.

  15. I would imagine that a couple of he hosts might be set depending o bills. For ex, Junior and TOGW have no big financial obligations. But George's spread has to cost some sweet moolah to pay those property taxes. Gordo still has his kids to put thru school. Corby has his kids and house on the crick. And I'm still not sure Corby can carry his own show if Mike decides to bail. It might become even more Skip Bayless in tone and I'd be out. But, who knows...

    ReplyDelete
  16. @10:16 They would have to come up with somebody pretty special to pair with Corby to replace the OGW. Otherwise I am out.

It's very noticeable that Rotten Radio is Muser-heavy. Not that that's a bad thing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have been in and out of the automobile today and digging some rotten radio. What little I have heard seems to be very Greggo-inclusive. Good for those young-uns who weren't here (has it really been) 8 - 9 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  18. East TexasP1...right there with ya! Unfortunately I was up until 6 am getting my butt kicked at Winstar [btw, saw a lady hit 315,000 bucks on a slot] I had to come back and go to bed, but was laughing my ass off on the drive back today. Wish I could have stayed up just for rotten radio. Rotten usually is Muser heavy because they have the best bits. The boring Brad office employee, and fake Greggo as the new Buffalo Bills coach had me laughing so hard I almost ran off the road.
I turned over to the Ticket the other day for the Top 10, and caught the end of THL. Corby was talking about Wally Lynn. I was just trying to think of that guys name a while back. Sounds like Greggo is not the only Fan-ex to have their wheels come off. Good luck to both those guys tho. Also, somewhat surprised to hear Ritchie Whitt is still employed in the media. Where is he applying his craft these days? Anon 1:55...I don't see anyone pairing with Corby, or even really wanting to. I think the only reason they have any listeners is because people like Rhynes. Some one posted the ratings the other day, and all the Ticket shows where in double digit ratings [very good], but what I took from that was THL [ya know, the drive-time slot] was almost tied for last place. I think Rhynes should do the right thing...and retire. He has received all the accolades for his great past work. The show is no longer fun, and I'm not sure Rhyner even enjoys it anymore. They have some great week-end talent biting at the bit that could really refresh that time slot, or at least get a chance. I think people would really be surprised at the lack of an uproar if THL were replaced.

  19. Heard a little of the rotten radio. Greggo was the perfect partner to Rhyner and Corby was great in his role. I just don't think his over the top comments come across as what I used to like about the Hardline. I'm just old I guess. The nonsports stuff is great - I just don't dig his "I guarantee" opinions. Gets old. Example - when Ali died, why was Corby talking at all? Should have been all OGW and his memories of what the impact, if any, was on his sports life. Corby was just regurgitating articles about Ali. Ryhner was "there". Why didn't he have more to say??

  20. Came here to praise rotten radio on this here July 4th. Nice to see others mentioning its greatness.

  21. I do think we're listening to the last 5 months of Norm as a full-time, varsity host. I agree with the commenter who said they see him as host emeritus, handling the Cow post duties as long as he wants to, the NFL and NBA drafts, and as many guest-host, +1, and fill-in work as he wants/can handle. My guess is that he takes on that role come Jan. 1, '17; that he makes an announcement sometime shortly after his full-time return to TIoNaD; something along the lines of he sees needs to slow down, wants to get in all the traveling he can while he still can, it's time to give Donnie full autonomy or some such, etc, etc, etc.

As to Rhyner, I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon. Slinky is right, THL is no longer a fun listen. Yet I don't think Rhyner sees it that way.

  22. Plainsman - I don't post much but I stop by and read just about every day. Thanks so much for providing a forum for the faithful Ticket listener. I can't say I'm a P-1 because I cannot stand listening from 12-3, but other than that I've been listening since day 1 and listened to Norm on KLIF for years before that. Can't imagine my life without the little Ticket for entertainment. Thanks again for your faithfulness in keeping up this forum.

  23. Many thanks, livinginreality. Please let us have more of your comments. I believe you may be one of our distaff readers and we desperately need more of the ladies' POV around here.

  24. (1) I don't think Mike will give up a gig where he doesn't have to prepare and then doesn't have to participate and no one (P-A Catman) is going to tell him he has to, and it would make no difference if anyone did. I must say that he seems to have revived his interest in the show in recent months, but it's still an up-and-down thing.

    (2) I do understand those who punch out on Hardline Corby. I'm not one of them, but, as Corby says about 17 times per show, "I get it." Of all the hosts, as irritating as his sometimes inexpert observations can be, the guy makes me laugh out loud the most.

    (3) I have observed, as have other Confessors, that Corby is much, much better when either (i) he is responsible for running a show, or (ii) when he is on a show other than The Hardline with higher, shall we say, standards of show preparation. I don't fear the Mikeless Hardline.

  25. As much as you kiss the arse of BaD they may very well give you a mention.

"You have the Shake Joi..." and I'm out. Can hear it now Jack Emp is back from vacation and he'll be cheering the Mavs in their offseason moves so far....you know they're keeping their powder dry for next year's strong free agent and draft. Same thing they've been doing for 5 years since the championship team.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ 8:34 since you didn't listen you should know that isn't what Jake said.

    ReplyDelete
  27. And 834, if you think I "kiss the arse of BaD," your status as a faithful Confessor is open to question.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was gonna say, Plainsman barely listens to BaD.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Plainsman, been reading ever since 2007 and although I don't comment much, it's been great having this mainstay on the 'net. Thanks for the forum and the chance to talk about our beloved station.

Stay Hard and Keep Jamming and we'll see ya.

  30. Listening to rotten radio during 4th of July made me realize how much I miss The Ticket of yesteryear. That magic cannot be recreated.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'll take the current state of The Ticket all day over the days of yore where the shows were very much caller driven.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Had to smile this morning.

Did you guys hear Sean and Jake talking about BaD Radio this morning in the 5:30-6:30 time frame (too dark for me to see the clock)? The context was "hosts laying out when a non-host attempts to interject a humorous remark." Sean's position was that BaD Radio did that frequently, because . . . because they're BaD Radio. Jake defended that all hosts lay out on non-host humor.

It didn't last long, but it did enhance the legend of "BaD Radio, the Most Challenging Showgram to Work For."

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sean takes that stuff way more personally than other JVers. But Jake's right--the Musers are by far the worst offenders of the layout when non-hosts interject. See: Killer, Joe Letsche, Sean, etc etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  34. Listening to Rotten Radio on July 4th made me realize how PC these guys have gotten. Example: would the Dawson's Creek fake promos ever make the air today? they were crude but extremely funny.

Just a sign of the times, I guess.

  35. So, the ratings are out and it's business as usual for the little ticket. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how Donnie and Norm got a 10.5. That show is unlistenable to me. What exactly is the appeal?

    ReplyDelete
  36. The numbers.

  38. I've been talking about the future of CBS Radio for nearly three years and it looks like there is finally some action.

Apparently, CBS was unable to find a buyer for its radio division, so Bloomberg reports that they'll spin it off and conduct an IPO.
