BREAKING: Changes at ESPN

Per Anonymous at 7:06p on September 24:

Per Reddit, Mosely and Friedo out at ESPN.

Steve Dennis to replace Mosely on Afternoon Show.

Friedo-Dennis to be replaced by Jean-Jacques Taylor and an unnamed partner.

This is all I have on this, and if it turns out to be in error, apologies in advance.   My thanks to 706 Anonymous, unless it's wrong.

I liked Cowlishaw and Mosely, but I think Steve Dennis and Tim Cowlishaw will be worth a listen.

Interesting -- in the last thread, I was wondering if Dennis might find a home as a host somewheres.  I speculate that this has nothing to do with these changes.

UPDATE:  Looks like Anonymous had the goods.

Article places Will Chambers with JJT.  Looks like JJT was reporting on his assignment via Facebook on Friday, so I'm a little behind the times here.

  1. If JJT takes calls how many P-for-wings calls will he get? 5 per hour?

  2. They better have a lot of delay.

  3. There is really no voice/personality/sense of humor combo I dislike more than Steve Dennis. I try to be a positive guy and maybe he is somebody's cup of tea, and he is probably a good dude, but on the radio he is an automatic punch out for me. When it was Ian Fitzsimmons and Freido, I listened when BAD Radio was on commercial. When I get sick of the Hardline, I listened to Cowlishaw and Mossley. If they are going to pair Dennis and Cowlishaw, I can't imagine I will give it more than 60 seconds before I reach for the backlog of podcasts on my phone.

  4. Oh, and another note on Greggo. He is big on his honesty in these tweets. I caught one of them where he says he graduated summa cum laude at TCU wtih a degree in English. That just doesn't seem..... plausible.

  5. Arnold Palmer has passed. Corby is on suicide watch.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Indeed. He got sick and passaway.

    ReplyDelete
  7. If Corby is on suicide watch, I'm making it a point to look the other way!

  8. I can hear Norm saying "oh Friedo" I wonder if there is a place for him back at the Ticket? Perhaps weekend Ticker guy?

    ReplyDelete
  9. They have a new weekend Ticker guy who seems to be doing well. Since Cat essentially fired Friedo -- Cumulus is programming that station -- dunno where Friedo is likely to fit in.

And let's not forget The Return of Matt McClearin.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It was nice to hear George's story of going to the Deathstar without it turning into Corby's story of going to the Deathstar.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I love reading your posts confessor, but lately it's starting to be more MyESPNConfessions.

    ReplyDelete
  12. McClearin is back? Where? In what capacity?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I didn't catch the Muser's today. Was Corby on the show? If Corby is on a show, it ALWAYS turns into a Corby story!

    ReplyDelete
  14. @1:52
I was referring to last week when Mike was giving his impressions of the Deathstar, until Corby took over.

    ReplyDelete
  15. McClearin is temporarily cohosting at 103.3. Have no idea if it's permanent. Per his Twitter acct, it's fill-in work. Scot is still in Alabama, working for some sort of taco joint operation.

  16. Gotcha! I missed it! I don't listen to Hardline.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Cody Patterson: I think the evidence is pretty thin for that, but apologies for conveying that impression. But read the little blurb under my picture.

  18. I know everyone will be shocked to hear that Gordo and the Musers think Hillary won the debate, even though there are tons of polls from left leaning sources showing Trump won.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Fox News postgame (minus Hannity) gave it to Hillary

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'd love to see these tons of polls, too. It seems like most sources feel Hillary outperformed Donald.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm pleased to say that everyone is right: (1) Most of the online polls give it to Mr. Trump. Craig's polling of the polls was accurate. (2) Your Plainsman, who loathes Mrs. Clinton and barely tolerates Mr. Trump (so I'm voting for him), gave the evening narrowly but clearly to Mrs. Clinton.

Now let's get back to more Tickety concerns, please.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Last thing though...are we talking about scientific polls or various "online polls" that various websites conduct? Because there's a pretty big difference

    http://www.dailydot.com/layer8/trump-clinton-debate-online-polls-4chan-the-donald/

    http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/clinton-won-the-debate-which-means-shes-likely-to-gain-in-the-polls/

    ReplyDelete
  23. Never trust an online poll of any kind. There are too many ways of even a small group to totally change the outcome. I have seen what the various gun discussion groups can do to a poll in a very short time.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, I know who lost....ME...for watching it!

    ReplyDelete
  25. The BaD Radio open today included the infamous Hardline blow-off of Pete Stein (5, 4, 3 2, and you're done). They were really annoyed that someone dared to offer baseball opinions on their show. Still hard to listen to.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You read a blog for a half dozen years. You think you know a person based on them being a fairly level headed, usually even keeled fella. Then you learn the person watched Donald Trump the night before for 90 or so minutes and is still going to attempt to elect him to the nations highest office. You now realize you didn't know the guy at all. Nah, not even a little bit.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The problem is that also on the ballot with Trump is Clinton. To quote the great Gordo: "kill me, kill me now!"

  27. @323 Someone whose views deviate from your own in some regard is seen by you as, I guess, irrational, stupid? I'm thankful we don't and never will get to *know* you. Grow up, already.

On another note: I swung by the JJT-McClearin show today. Must admit that the 3 or so years in 'Bama have polished Matty McC. He, at least in this wee sample size, showed no traces of that old creepy, bad-touch-too-old-to-be-this-hyperactive vibe he used to ooze when MaSS was a Sunday showgram. He was informative, even-keeled (like you once were, Pman, until you differed with Mr. or Ms. or Xe Right Side of History, aka 323), and restrained--in both delivery and message. JJT, too, was much the same. He expressed himself nicely, with an easy flow; and not like he used to, that is, in punchy yet substance-less one-liners. Think I'll check in again next week and see if this pattern holds. But all in all, thumbs--surprisingly, I must admit--up.

I was hollering last night. I can find places to go full scorched earth. This is one I had rather reserve for SPORTS AND TALKING ABOUT SPORTS. /allcaps

JJT is back on the air? Well all right then. Keep that delay nice and short, let fly.

  33. Hardline is the lowest rated show on the Ticket

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like Brian Jones, but if he calls the football "the rock" one more time I'm going to reach into the radio and strangle him. Having said that --- Hook'em!

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Shaggy, in response to THL being lowest rated. I am one of those all day P1's on weekdays, and I have found myself turning THL off more and more lately. A good example of the type of thing that turns me away from THL was yesterday when they were talking about the debates. Corby and his little buddy hijacked the segment and went on and on, and then right at the end asked Mike what he thought. Mike said yeah I agree with you guys. Frankly, I have better things to do with my time than listen to Corby and Danny for 4 hours with little input from Mike. The few segments that Mike really participates in I still enjoy, but it is way too much the Corby and Danny show these days.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've pretty much abandoned the Ticket on my afternoon drive home. The Corby Show finally drove me away.

For those of you who are in the same situation as I was, I recommend getting out that old unused iPhone, wiping it clean and installing Overcast. Then, go out to the iTunes store and subscribe to a couple of podcasts. I'll recommend 99% Invisible, Criminal, That's The Way I Heard It (by Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame) and Planet Money to get you started. There are quite a few others that I've tried as well, but I'll leave it to you to discover your favorites. If you get 6-10 different podcasts in rotation, you can cover your 45-60 minute drive home each day with a new episode or two. Make sure that you attach it to your home wi-fi. Chances are better than zero that it will pick up the wi-fi signal from your garage/driveway and automatically download the latest episodes each evening.

And, once a week or so on your way home, call your sainted Mother and see how her week is going.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Another example is occurring right now. Corby and Danny are making fun of Trump's knowledge of computers and cyber-security. Meanwhile hundreds of State Department emails are sitting on Putin's desk.

Just some balance, guys. All I ask is a little balance.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why do you demand balance though? It's their show.

    ReplyDelete
  39. OK, Shaggy, if it's their show and so what, then I hope you never bitch about FOX News, MSNBC, or whatever your political kryptonite happens to be. Because it's their channel/show, etc., after all.

Having said that, I don't think it's too much to ask that the guys have some sense of the bigger picture and at least some facts before shooting their almost always uninformed mouths off. I'm talking HL here, not Musers. On the whole D&M do a good job when it comes to this stuff. Just to be clear, I'm not 526. That and 526 didn't "demand" balance, s/he asked--and politely I might add. (Gee I wish folks would take the time to carefully read what others write before snarking.)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm 5:26

Shaggy, you pointed out the Hardline's ratings. Just offering a possible reason. I want them to succeed, not fail. And I think listeners are being driven away.

    ReplyDelete
  41. And I'm one of the listeners that 526 is talking about. Correction - a former listener. Almost exclusively XM or podcast after Mike's Mind, for exactly the reasons described. Indeed it's their show, unfortunate that many of their listeners don't feel welcome any more

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would appreciate balance, or avoiding the topic altogether like BaD Radio does, because I listen to the Ticket for fun and yucks and a little sports talk sprinkled in. If I want biased political talk I will listen to Fox or MSNBC. A lot of THL listeners or former listeners at least lean conservative I would bet, and they are being driven away from THL. I get it that they are going to talk about the presidential election, but acting like anyone voting for Trump or against Hillary are backwoods ignorant hicks does not attract listeners. It's their show indeed, and they have every right to do it however they want to do it, and I have every right to punch out.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Just more proof that nobody can handle being sensible regarding talking politics.

I called for a political discussion moratorium on the Ticket Reddit. They laughed. Now it's a shit show. Hell, this site is even moderated and it's turned into a shit show.

This is a microcosm of what's wrong with this country. Life, really: The inability to listen/discuss viewpoints other than your own in a civil, mature manner. Everyone's so goddamn hellbent on making sure their team wins, facts be damned.

    Religion, politics...there's no discussion anymore.

Never thought I'd say it, but I miss the post after post of T.C. hate after reading the political sensitives here.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @GodOfPopTarts, it goes beyond the political talk on THL for me. It just seems, and this is not just from me, that Corby and Danny have taken over the show. Now,this might be Mike driven, but it does seem that is the way things have gone, and that shows in the ratings IMO. I for one am a big Mike Rhyner P1, so to hear less contribution from him makes me want to punch out.

    ReplyDelete
  45. GoPT: You seem to see yourself as some sort of pragmatist who, while has her/his own distinct views, is capable of setting aside biases and tendencies in order to have an open--and hopefully, fruitful--discussion. More or less the case? And yet.... Here you are dismissing others views because they fail to comport with your nuanced, pragmatic stance(s)--e.g., "political sensitives"? Such a statement is civil? You, in essence, wish to both proscribe and prescribe what others ought to think, to say. I believe that you have either hastily or poorly read this com-box, GoPT. And as a result, your critical thinking skills, at least in this particular instance, have faltered. I ask you, please, to read afresh the above comments. You will find that with a few exceptions, most are non-partisan, most express--at heart--the very same sentiment that you yourself call for, and most state a rather obvious fact: consistently slicing and dicing up a segment of a listenership cannot be good for business. Moreover, the majority of these comments indicate a desire for all shows to at least ease up on the socio-poltical talk, if not eradicate it all together.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have zero inside information (obviously) but do you think it's possible that the HL is purposely giving Corby and Dan more air time knowing that Ryner won't be here forever? If you concede that's possible then would you say the political leanings are simply catering to the new younger audience they hope to court?

Very generally, old people are conservative and young people are liberal. Ryners generation and the day 1 P1s are dying out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Back in my day if you "cyber" it didn't mean going on the internet...A/S/L know what I mean?

The entire time Trump was going on about cyber, all I could think of was "Did he say we should figure out cyber?" I mean, I could show him, but I don't think he's into that.

I think I'm in the minority here but I like the political talk on The Ticket...Especially the Musers, I think they do a fantastic job. But I like listening to political talk no matter where it comes from sooooooooo

    ReplyDelete
  48. To Chris K's point, which is valid, everyone needs to also remember that the DFW market is very large, very diverse, younger, educated, and has a large percentage of transplants here for their careers.

I get the sense a lot of the complaining is from folks a little upset at all those trends, but sorry, the world is urbanizing no matter what interpretation you put in that. Maybe you're not quite the influencing demographic you think you are anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Chris K: Very good questions, and your observation re age and political bent is on the whole accurate. The British philosopher C.D. Broad once remarked: "Not to be radical when one is young argues hardness of heart; to remain so when one is old suggests softness of head." I believe what Broad says is generally true. Though I would add to his pithy statement that many folks return to their radicalism (by "radical," Broad means Leftism) in their old age. And while Mike isn't ancient by any stretch of the imagination, he is a senior citizen. With a few exceptions, Mike's socio-political leanings on the whole hedge towards the left side of the spectrum. One must remember that it was Mike's generation (Boomers) that ushered in the New Left, the hippie, the anti-war, the sexual revolution, feminist, etc., movements. What was it that Norm said to Sam at the end of the "Cheers" finale? Something like "you always come back to the one you love, Sammy." Meaning (and please, I'm not being a--gasp, the horror--essentialist here), most of us return to that which and that what we are: soldiers cry out for their mothers as they lay dying, many of the elderly experience a second childhood, and a goodly many of us return to the passions, the ideals (though less exuberant, perhaps more nuanced) we held fast to as a youth.

  50. Would the Musers continue to enjoy their stranglehold on morning drive if George and Craig took segments off and let Gordon and Fernando rant about whatever bug was up their butts that day?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I leave town for one day and I come back to Sociology 101. Back to sports, gents. Most (not all) don't like politics on The Ticket, and I don't like it here. So please, back to something trivial, OK?

    Next -- let's take some Cowboys calls . . . .

  52. No, Pman, you came back to critical thinking, failed, 101. Right Side Of History We Are The Future tried to scuttle SS MTC. Thankfully they failed.

  54. So's movie watching.

Joonz ripped the Boys org a new one today. It was awesome!

  55. The BAD radio phone scan is awesome. The P-1's genius shines through in this segment. Although Jake is close to crossing that Dan Balis dark cloud line. Wish THL would bring back the two minute drill, but I guess the personalities wouldn't really warrant it. I can't imagine Corby and Danny laughing at P1 genius.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What made George and Craig more pissed off...9/11 or Dez not showing up to his MRI on Monday?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I’ve read the last couple of days of comments and seen a bunch of pioneers trying to push this conversation left or right. For the most part, I agree with the original GoPT post but some of the replies (e.g. Chris K, and the way over top Anon 4:34) are exactly the reason why THL is turning people off and frankly begins to turn people off of blogs like this.

Thanks you very much Master of the Plain for bringing this back to discussions of topics that have nothing to do with national security, large walls, pant suits, email servers, or hair pieces. I agree most with Anon 0653.

I can get over the top, ultra-partisan political talk on any cable new station or in the comments section of pretty much any internet thread. I can get baseless opinions on pop culture from TMZ, Perez Hilton, Rolling Stone, etc.

I have turned to this station since the late 90’s because it always kept things light and fun. I know the hosts all have their leanings but it just added character to their fun and yucks. I turn off THL because their commentary is stale and often times ignorant. I can listen to people much more informed than them make a point and at least back up their opinions with data.

The downturn in THL ratings is not going to get any better. The demo they used to take for granted are turning to Fox or CNBC for whatever they “want” hear. I agree with Anon 1:34 that “the DFW market is very large, very diverse, younger, educated, and has a large percentage of transplants here for their careers”. The only thing you forgot to mention is that Corby and Danny don’t appear to be connecting with them either.

    ReplyDelete
  58. So the pizza delivery guy turned radio producer turned highly leverage bartender and his frat-bro corky who can't wait to hot-box the weekly rental at the next Redneck Riviera festival have a plan to strategically target the left-leaning youts of America with low-information political talk? They're secretly targeting the same youngsters that don't listen to radio, especially AM radio, as has been well documented here at MTC? Wow, one 3 1/2 hour radio show (WTDS is not work) on one radio station is going to change the behavioral patterns of an entire generation! Man, I didn't know all that social engineering genius was going on under the radar at The Ticket.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I had forgot about the two minute drill. It was those kind of bits that made the old Hardline great. One of my all-time favorites was the annual Hardy Awards. That was "never leave the radio" greatness. Some confessor pointed out that by the time THL comes on, all the sports news have been hashed to death. But Mike and Greggo always brought a whole new power punch.
Lets look at this. Your drive-time, big money slot is basically running neck to neck with a weak 2 hour late morning show. At what point, if any, do the big boys make some changes? Their ratings appear to still beat the competition, so, is that all that matters? I like Rhyner, and even like Danny, but I wouldn't mind seeing something new and different.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @ Chris K....if you're thinking that Corby and Danny are moving into their own show digs, better think again! they're pretty much the main reason nobody listens anymore. [at least Corby anyway] You know, I think one reason Rhynes doesn't retire, is because he knows if he goes...THL goes. Where would that leave Corby? Not just a lot of options there buddy, especially for a guy with probably a huge mortgage and family to support. But then again, I see the Skip Bayless , the Matt Dellavedova, and Manu Ginobili deals....so hell..I guess anything is possible!
