Do We Have a New Ticket Announcer Man?

Heard a new voice doing the station ID this morning.  Nice voice.  No Conrad, but a nice voice.

Are we hearing the last of Conrad and those appalling, unfunny, 5th-grade-snickering-in-the-boys-room gags he's forced to recite?

I note from the archives that Conrad seemed to take a break back in July of 2014 and some of the time-sensitive promos were recorded by someone else pending his return.  But the thing I heard today was not a time-sensitive promo -- it was THE station ID liner.

So if we've heard the last of Conrad -- best of luck.  Drop me a line, why doncha?  We'll do a 20 Questions or AMA or something.

By the way:  His name is Jim Conrad, and here he is with Craig "Junior" Miller doing a bit at 2011 Ticketstock:

And Becca, good luck to you, wherever you are.

  1. New transition music and new voices are always jarring at first, but then are accepted. I remember everyone losing their shit a few years ago when some of the music changed. Never mentioned now.

To touch on some of the previous thread's comments on people "not getting" The Ticket...I can see that. But I first started listening to sports talk in Houston, and my working hours "allowed" me to listen to lots of national shows. I think P1s sometimes forget how good we have it.

  2. Well, turns out the new station ID is sponsored and JJ had to make it because Conrad was out, but Conrad will return.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Junior just advised that they had to get a new Station ID because of a new sponsor.

Conrad was on vacation and could not do the voice over.

He will be doing the Station ID in the future.

Becca is still on maternity leave.

  4. Thanks to all for the insider info. I don't remember a sponsor reference but could be wrong.

I posted this thing at 8:45. Wonder if someone saw it at The Ticket and said "Plainsman has posted more incorrect information -- please get this info squared away."

Probably assumes greater coverage than this site in fact enjoys.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Jer advised on Twitter that Conrad is back on all IDs. He said "Many many p1s were concerned".

I believe the new sponsor is TXU. Something like "...broadcasting live from the TXU Mothership".

    ReplyDelete
  6. Again, thanks for the clarification. I did not pick up the sponsor change when I heard it a couple of times this morning.

Even when this site is in error, it's good for something.

  7. Is Conrad a full-time employee? Doesn't seem like he'd need 40 hours to do his job, but then again, he seems to need to always be available, which would rule out his having a day job.

  8. Jim Conrad is a full time voice actor. He lives in Canada.

  9. Conrad is a good, but he's no Doc Morgan. :D

  10. Conrad is the narrator on Aerial America on the Smithsonian channel. He does a lot of other voicework too.

  11. Some words on the Reddit site re MTC. Grubes made a comment, but he removed it.

[–]trainedgaucho 2 points 1 day ago
I agree, grubes1310, MTC isn't perfect. That said, i, with the help of a dear friend who is a network engineer, am about to launch an offshoot site of MTC tentatively titled "my ticket confession confession". My goal is for it to be a home for those who love almost everything about MTC and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."

  12. @ Anon 10:00

That sounds like a lot of work to try and rebut a commentary site that addresses a radio station that is well... all commentary. Is this in response to the very lightly moderated discussion here? I wonder. I've checked out the Reddit site. It's decent. I don't leave thinking anything different than I do on this site. I don't know why it has to be either/or. Same with this thread, I read things I agree with, others I don't. Unlike Playboy, I ONLY come here for the pictures.

I'll be damned... I knew that voice was familiar.

  14. Are they gonna call it "My TC Confession" for short?

  15. BaD just got burned by a Hawkeye (KSCS) hosting faking multiple callers including GBL and Homer Call. Slow Burn...Great Bit...Great Timing.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow. The Hawkeye prank is top five of Ticket pranks of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Bob Sturm said the Hawkeye imposter prank(s) will be a subject of a 15 for 15.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Haven't visited the Reddit site in awhile, but my impression was that it was a well-run site.

Countersites always welcome. If it features the readers whose comments get bounced here, then it's liable to be a wild affair.

Wonder what Michael Gruber put up, then took down. He used to stop by here for a cup of coffee now and then. (He was also the first commenter on MTC, other than a test comment I threw up when I started the thing.) It saddens me a little to think that there are many new listeners to The Ticket who never experienced the greatness that was Michael Gruber on the board -- and just the sweetness and sunniness that he brought to the station.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Boy the Hawkeye prank has the all the weekend shows in a tizzy. They are all replaying and discussing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Plainsman:

I wonder if he is going to put up something like the old Remove Rowdy.net or Bobanddan.net were. They started out as Ticket and show driven discussion boards that soon developed into constant crotch kicking went downhill from there. Entertaining, yes, but not what you were looking for if you wanted station information or discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, it does seem like a lot of work, which makes me think it's unlikely to happen or, if it does, it won't last long. I mean, I let through most criticism that isn't insulting or angry or violent or otherwise violative of the Rules of the Confessional (and sometimes I let even those through), so what constituency would an anti-MTC site serve? So if this is serious, I think eventually it would have to become a general Ticket blog if it weren't going to run out of material in pretty short order.

I gather that there was commentary that MTC is "not perfect." Well, right.

But it is very, very close.

I've always been a booster of new Ticket blogs and fan sites. Always mention them when they show up, always link to them on the Ticket-Friendly Sites list. Some of them are run by guys who seem to have a whole lot better pipeline to The Ticket than I do. (As I have, for the most part, none.) I think it adds to the fun, even if the site boss isn't a fan of My Ticket Confession. I regret that of the handful or so that have started up since I started writing in 2009, few lasted more than a few weeks or months. But a motivated guy or group could easily get one going and keep it going with not so very much work if he/they had something to say of interest to readers. We could get a little (respectful) back and forth going, could be a hoot.

"My Ticket Confession Confession." Kind of like football ball. I think maybe I should be flattered.

  22. Keep doing what ya doing, P-Man! Let the people who don't even know who Greggo (R.G. Williams) is fester on that other discussion board. I always enjoy doing my shopping on this one. :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. The "My Ticket Confession Confession" post is clearly a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fun(painful) Sunday morning game...count the "I Don't Know's". 3 were just offered up in the span of 2min!

    ReplyDelete
  25. My guess is that it's a joke. There is a certain troll out there who, for whatever sad reason(s), cannot stand the fact that Pman will not abide its puerile and offensive drivel. To the point that it posts comments on the reddit site about MTC. Sad stuff, really.

Glad to hear that Conrad is still onboard. I hate formatting changes. It took me a great while to get used to Conrad (post Doc).

So, are we gonna get a Ticketstock song? It's almost a month (or is it sooner, not sure what this year's date is) away and no tune. Not only that, but we aren't hearing the usual barrage of reminder /save the date spots; nor are we hearing the pitching of vendor booths. Maybe things will change, and soon if they're going to, but this year's TS sure has a different, low key, almost afterthought-ish feel to it.

I'm not going to bag on the guys, but I must say that after a now rather meaty sample size, I can safely say that neither TSJ nor NaP are ready for primetime. Let's just say that the issues aired by many a Confessor and Pman himself from time to time still remain, and in rather glaring fashion.

  26. Award show talk is like what?... 2000-2005?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Doc Morgan, now that's a name out of the aether of yesteryear.

it has been a while since I drifted by the MTC, does anyone else recall what Mike said about the Cowboys and this season of good results? Was it mentioned that when they do poorly it is better for them? If they are doing well it is bad because there isn't so much to talk about. I have a theory that this is why Norm is such a concern troll. He looks for things to worry about to drive interest in the segment. Just you wait Rangers fans, Uncle Norm will come with his list of things you should be very very worried about.

wonder how superlative Corbily will spin tonight's game. He declared it ballgame in the first quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @11:50 award show talk is a thrashing of the highest order. When you throw in the Hollywood libs whining and crying it makes it an immediate punch-out. At times it seems like the hosts laugh at some of the audio because they think it is the cool thing to laugh at the Hollywood elite. I usually find very little even slightly amusing. It was funny to hear Sea Bass dang near pee his pants over the Meryl Streep diatribe.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Golden Globe talk is fitting, since both award shows and the Hardline are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Awards show talk is a bit antiquated, for me anyway, due to the same reason I never watch them anymore: you don't have to. Instead of spending 4 hours or more watching a show, you can just check Twitter or someplace online for all the winners, you can see any acceptance speech you want...all that without having to sit through all the garbage.

I know some of you don't like any of it at all, and that's fine, but as one who used to watch them, not having to waste an entire night watching an awards show is fine with me.

Due to that, I think talking about speeches and winners the next day just smells of "pick up the newspaper and plan our show accordingly."

    ReplyDelete
  31. Considering the news that was made by the Streep speech, it would have been strange had E-news not contained some mention of it. I for one was pleasantly surprised to hear Corby say that Meryl's speech should not have happened.

  32. Major swerve:

Has Mark Cuban explained how his superior understanding of the NBA collective bargaining agreement has demanded that he assemble one the worst teams in the league?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Cuban's knee-jerk "blow up the team" reaction to the CBA, in my eyes, is equally offensive as Tom Hicks signing Chan Ho Park and ARod to trillion dollar contracts, then saying "I'm not writing any more checks" when it didn't work.

Cuban gets a pass by most because he won a title, but his money panic -- coupled with treating the draft like it is just a yearly annoyance -- was unjustified and has the team where it is today.

  34. Here's an HSO...I like the ticketstock song this year

  35. WHERE IS DANNY? /STOP/

    ReplyDelete
  36. As of yesterday, he was reported as unwell with whatever bug is going around the station.

I don't know if it's smoke or age or what, but his voice has sounded progressively worse for the past several months. Too bad, one of the mellower sounds on The Little One.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love BaD, I really do. But why do they get on these kicks making fun of the local news anchors? Guy's, they've been giving little cutesy, warm and fuzzy opinionated closing comments pretty much since we've had televised local news broadcast.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ...I mean, what do they expect from these guys?

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's one of their best segments. Warm and fuzzy closing comments have nothing to do with reading inane FB comments on the air.

Add in that listeners are throwing in Ticket easter eggs and you've got gold.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yeah, but that's just part of changing technology. Somewhat akin to the old Fax-Fodder days.

    ReplyDelete
  41. New Ticketstock song is a sweet ride. Reminds me of the classic one that played off of the Cold Play jam, When I Ruled the World. Ain't no Never Been Any Reason (then again what is?!!!). Tain't bad either. What it is though, is a tune we can all relate to.

I think the Musers have done a pretty good job of staying down the middle on the Trump stuff this week. Now the peanut gallery of Fernando and Sean Bass sound a little whiny and itching to chime in, but overall I think they have done as well as can be expected. We are definitely in for a wild ride.

    ReplyDelete
  48. FYI! Hawkeye will be on BaD Radio today at 1:50 to discuss the prank.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sean Bass needs to do Tickers, and nothing more, period. Unless it's off-air mgmt type duties. The only time we ever need to hear Fernando's creeper voice is when he states an Ebreak winner's stats, period.

  59. Sorry Sir.

In the 5:50 segment on 1-12-17 they had a discussion of a documentary on CNN on the 50 years of the band Chicago entitled Chicago: Now more than Ever that had run on New Years Day. Mike had talked about the upcoming segment the day before during that day's run sheet discussion. Corby had said something to the effect of wrecking the segment because he hated Chicago. Mike and Danny said don't, it's too important to a bunch of folks.
He was on his best behavior and only made a few comments about Peter Cetera and the schlock that the band produced in the 80's. He didn't try to take over the segment because he didn't really know what they were talking about.

They also got into a discussion about missing the old MTV segments of Behind the Music. All in all a rather interesting 20 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I am glad that Mike and Danny put the kibosh on the Corby music rant. A quick scan of the Twilite Lounge jukebox and Mike's obvious passion when he discusses anything music related has me convinced that each has a the scope of music interests that run circles around Corby's. Corby's music tastes appear stuck in his TCU apartment next to the bong.

I came across a Chicago album in my dad's collection and started making fun of my pops because at that point in the 80's, Chicago were heavy the ballad thing, the stuff my mom listened to. He set me down, took out the original CTA album, turned up those sweet Fisher 3-way wood grained speakers, and set me straight. It's like comparing Jefferson Starship to Jefferson Airplane.

The other two-thirds of THL seem to play nice with "Opinion as fact" Corby most of the time, but he deserved that pat on the head, let the adults talk moment.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ya know Pman, there's a certain midday producer that deserves his comeuppance. My wish is that he becomes humble during this offseason. Last night he tweeted he wished the Pats would advance to the SB so that a certain Dallas RB would decapitate them. Really, guy? Now he wants to be left alone.

    Moving on...

I was going through some ticket audio I have, and I think its been interesting to note the evolution of some of Gordo's characters, namely Mushmouth...He started out as some kind of feral human and now he/she is some kind of cryptozoological entity that has a kangaroo pouch who is learning guitar and handing out bears as a Christmas gift. (This is by far the craziest sentence I've ever written)

Gordo is genius, always and forever.

  76. Was just reading Wilonsky's obituary of KVIL (http://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/commentary/2017/01/19/say-goodbye-kvil-legendary-voice-ron-chapman-gives-proper-sign) and this stuck out to me:

"But it's a different world in radio, isn't it?" Chapman said. "How sad that all of those KVIL things are now part of history. That's a very sad commentary on the times. After I left, there were several attempts to be 'the new KVIL,' but KVIL left such an impressive mark on Dallas that they were never able to shake this old image of its old people there, me being among them...

"It's a shame it's gone, but KVIL had a great history," [Chapman] said. "It was what it was when it was. And now, it is no longer.""

For all the words we type about what will happen to the little Ticket in the future, who will take what shift and such, we're all just in denial. Read that again, replace 'KVIL' with 'Ticket', replace 'Chapman' with 'Rhyner', and there you have it. Those Tier 1 guys aren't getting any younger. The death of the Ticket is coming sooner than later. Enjoy it while you can, folks.
