Happy Eighth, MTC

ALERT:  POTENTIAL "FARGO" SEASON 3 SPOILERS IN THE COMMENT SECTION.

On this date in 2009, My Ticket Confession debuted.

Its first commenter was none other than the estimable That Nice Young Michael Gruber.

Thanks for sticking with me, Confessors.  Some of you have come and gone, but your patronage is much appreciated whenever it was offered.

Let me know if we make WTDS.

"I wish I could wake up MTC in that special way."

Any idea why Mike stopped acknowledging David Mino at the helm a few weeks ago? Corby called him on it when he first did this but Rhynes has continued with the snub now and it seems permanent. He introduces and says hi to Ty, references the traffic girl and Corby but purposely skips over Mino. Not sure if he is pissed at him or if it is a bit.

We’re in the dog days of summer…the sports black hole, and the crew is round-robin’ing their vacations. Isn’t this worse than dry dock? At least then, it’s all or nothing. You do get a bunch of fill in shows but it’s either punch in or punch out.

It has led me to wonder which of the A-Team shows takes the least step back during one of the full-timers’ absence. Naming the Invasion is easy as Norm was doing a solo show for 30 years before Donnie joined the fray. I have been surprised at how much of a vacuum is left by the absence of one of the Musers. Bob and Dan are relatively yin and yang but a spot start by Jake seems to keep it flying. I don’t want to get anyone trolling again but I really don’t think THL loses much when Corby leaves. Mike’s voice gets a chance to breath, there’s real sports talk not just regurgitation of the previous 3 shows, and Danny can still cover most pop culture stuff.

  5. Happy birthday MTC MUAH!

Cumulus stock is at 0.45 and everything is still going strong! May ticket survive the fourth (someone fact check me here) age.

  6. Monte + The Machine was pretty OK on Saturday, with guest bet-losing Bob Sturm sitting in. Pretty sportsy.

  7. I'm good with That Shake Joint Thang for the rest of the week (with hiatus for Rotten Radio tomorrow). Enjoying the show today.

And I'm 100% with Jake on the tragic disappointment of this season of Fargo. Ending was a give-up. Chick cop weak, miscast, but admittedly underwritten. (Her chick sidekick better.)

  8. Did anyone hear anything about the exclusion of David Mino from Mike's Hardline intro?

  9. I agree with your assessment of NAP on Saturday. I really like Justin and Machine (when he doesn't get all political on ya). This is an observation only...but it seems Justin is on his 3rd or 4th pronunciation of his last name. Probably trying to see what plays best on radio but I'm a big fan of JM!

Now to the contrary, TSJ seems completely opposite for me. Jake and Sean are completely mis-matched. I really like Jake and want to hear his takes, but SB interrupts him constantly!!! It's like he afraid he won't get 50% air time.

I still don't know what happened at the end of Fargo season 3. What was that? I liked Burgle the cop, but what was it with automatic doors and soap dispensers not detecting her?!? One of the funniest parts for me was when they were in the bathroom having just met and Whinni tells Burgle that they are trying to have a baby. Then she shares "he can "pop" easier doggy but we think you should be face to face when making a baby"!! Something about her saying that with that thick accent.

  10. Re "Fargo": Any idea what the connection of the first scene of the season -- the Kafkaesque interrogation in Nazi Berlin -- to the rest of it? I've kind of forgotten it, to tell you the truth, but it was some Nazi functionary questioning some guy whose identity was going to be changed, or something like that. The whole season had this kind of "who are we really" theme that was kind of . . . adolescent, cheap.

I did think David Thewlis was effective as the villain.

The Shea Whigham as sheriff-taking-over-for-Burgle subplot was distracting, unnecessary. Although I like him as an actor.

  11. Wow...last place I thought to need spoiler alerts. I'm still 3 eps out.

It reminds me of being in a complete media blackout during a Sunday afternoon drive from Dallas to Austin to avoid the Cowboy's game result. I was somewhere between Waco and Georgetown only to look up at a car dealership sign that had the score displayed.

  12. Sorry, ellislives. I hope you saw the spoiler alert at the head of the post.

I record most of the shows I follow these days, which means I PO on almost all Ticket TV talk. I promise we won't make it a habit here. I mentioned it only because Jake mentioned it this morning (without spoilers, I should add).

  14. Where is Country Force this week?

Monte + The Machine in for the Hardline, featuring a not-vacationing-today Dan Balis = mixed bag. When they were doing straight broadcasting, it was fine, maybe even better than fine. When everyone with a mic started doing more-inside-than-thou bits, leaving the listeners out and laughing so hard they could hardly speak or be understood when they did, it was not good. Joe Leche should sue them.

  15. I could kill [joking] Gordon! Ever since he introduced the stupid "Looking For a City" song, I can't get it out of my head! It does make for a hilarious drop on BaD tho. Speaking of Bad, on their show open the other day, I heard what sounded like Corby doing an old man's voice; I guess he thinks he's Gordo now.

  16. Rhynes-Machine controversy brewing on twitter...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Can you give a little detail, Shags, por favor? I'm not on the Twitters.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shaggy: I'm not seeing anything on either feed. ?

  19. I haven't taken the time to learn the structure and practices of Twitter, so it's hard to tell exactly who is saying what to whom. However 16h ago (as of July 4 at 5:27p), Father John Zesty tweeted: "When the people you look up to shit on you on the internet." Attached to that tweet was a shot of what appeared to be another tweet of someone who was "Replying to @FYFMethod, k@BracketDan, and 6 others," with the following text: "Hopefully his tastes are discerning enough to turn off 3-7 today."

Circumstantially, it looks like whoever was the original author of that tweet -- and I can't find it anywhere, including @OldGreyWolf -- was taking a shot at Monte + The Machine filling in for The Hardline.

That's all I know. If anyone else can excavate what's going on here, let me know. If that was Mike R shooing people away from The Hardline's fill-in show, that would be news.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nope, the original tweet was a P1 wife "complaining" (but not really) about her husband listening to the ticket on his phone on vacation in Florida. Completely innocuous/complimentary of the ticket in general. Not related to Not a Podcast in the least. Mike's shot seemed to come out of nowhere

  22. Thank you, Shaggy.

Mike's shot doesn't feel like a bit; nothing about it suggests he's teasing.

That's extraordinary. Mike R apparently displeased at the prospect of Monte + The Machine's stewardship of his time slot.

We wrote last week speculating -- well, mostly speculating, but also crediting some rumbles -- that perhaps The Musers aren't the warmest home for certain factions of the JV.

Now we have Mike R going radio silent (NPI) on David Mino and suggesting, quite gratuitously according to Shaggy, that people shouldn't listen to his distant-tier JV drydock replacement.

This site likes to pump up the JV when it has the slightest excuse to do so, but in this connection I must report that on a startling number of occasions when I've been tuned in Machine has presumed to dish it out to some weekday hosts and other of his Ticket way-betters. I hope he's as prepared to take it.

  23. Plainsman - thank you so much for providing this forum for the P-1. Although I don't post much, I read the comments just about every day. Happy Anniversary!

  24. A few questions to anyone and I will hang up and listen.

    1) Is "not a podcast" a reference to IJB? I know a lot of the JV'rs are annoyed with the way one of that group left and made it back as if it never happened.

    2) Who is running the ESPN station? I know cumulus owns their signal, but how does that work? JJT was fired at ESPN but still runs a radio show. The reason I ask is it is stated it is less expensive to run national instead of local each night. Yet several nights their is local programming with Elf and others on ESPN.

    3) If host are stretched for content during the summer, why not a soccer segment? plenty of MLS and Gold Cup or other tournament action. I guess we could have another will the Cowboys win 12 or 11 games this summer. There are plenty of things going on besides the Rangers or whatever they pull off ESPN headlines and just repeat the article. Several shows last week seemed like they were just stretching to get to that next break. Certain host def need a strong second host with them.

  25. Quick hits:

    - I haven’t heard any of the Tier One backlash but it’s understandable. Succession planning is tough for any business. I’m that sweet Gen-X’er, middle manager playing referee between the Boomers and the Millenials. I get a bunch of closed-door “You really expect them to take over for me?” and “They need to be put out to pasture” talk. Playing the middle is futile. I just want to avoid work-place violence.
    - I heard an ad for the all too mispronounced Meador Auto Group asking people to settle something to the effect of the Metroplex’s biggest problem on whether or not these Hidden Cost Motors spots should continue. I can’t help but think that these guys read this thread. Reagor-Dykes started the whole “Don’t hate me if you don’t know me” after getting bashed here. Now if we could just get the credit union woman to see this.

    To Anon 08:36

    - IJB = It’s Just Banter. It’s Jake and TC. TC left for a brief respite to FL to take a job but came back. The details are murky. TC is a general whipping post here.
    - Don’t know anything about the World Wide Leader except that they’re bleeding money. I never had anything against JJT but felt like he was trying to Stephen A Smith his way to the top. Luckily I shoved something in his face and he gave me some chicken wings.
    - Do you think soccer gets a kick in the balls around here? I’ve tried my hand over the years at a number of sports stations around this fair land and still say the Little One is way ahead of most. Name another station that has anything like the Kickaround, Race Week, and the Tee-Box? Throw in Bob’s EPL and NHL segments, the Junez cycling stuff during the Tour, and Corby taking over the show with tennis. For every one of you, there’s 10,000 listeners wondering why they’re not talking Cowboys on June 1.

  26. -Rhyner v. Machine: I saw this when it happened and I took it as a joke. I think it would've remained that way had Machine not gotten butt-hurt over it and tweeted the pic of Rhyner's comment. My favorite part is his "aw guys, I wasn't fishing for compliments" follow up (https://twitter.com/machinesports/status/882246882336149510). Just another reason I can't stand Machine. As our hard-working Plainsman says above, Machine has no problem dishing it out to Tier 1 yet a largely-unseen joke of a tweet gets his panties in a wad.

-Rhyner v. Mino: I thought it was Danny that called Rhyner out on it just before Mike's Mind late last week. Rhyner was very up-front about it. He didn't state a specific reason, but the heavy implication (to me, at least) was his frustrations with Mino's drop frequency. The timing seems to align with Mino's love of the Corby scream drop but that may just be a coincidence. I love Mino's work, but it's very plain to hear if you listen to THL for more than 15 minutes per day that he doesn't read the room very well. By that, I mean he throws drops around no matter the mood and there are plenty of times when Rhyner and Danny sound like they'd fire him right then and there if they could.

-@836: IIRC, Machine has either said or tweeted that the name "Not a Podcast" has no hidden meeting and is not a shot at IJB. As for more soccer talk, that's why The Kickaround exists. Bob is the only Tier 1 guy capable of doing an entire segment on soccer, and he doles those out judiciously.

One of my automatic punch-outs is hearing a sports segment that was handled beautifully by one show butchered by another. The most common occurrence of this is when Bob goes full Sports Sturm on something Cowboys or NFL Draft (you know, stuff he gets paid to research and write about for a major newspaper) only to have Corby stumble around the topic an hour or two later. Other hosts are guilty of it too, but I feel like they'd save themselves time and embarrassment by just saying "everyone read Bob's latest Cowboys blog in the DMN". That's a long segue to saying keep the Musers, Norm & Donnie, and THL away from soccer talk.
