VJ Boyd Is At It Again

I'm sure someone else has noticed this already, since I'm usually late to pop culture stuff, but:

Remember how writer-producer VJ Boyd slipped a number of Ticket references into the series "Justified"?

He's back with a new show, "Lincoln Rhyme," based on Jeffrey Deaver's "The Bone Collector."

During the pilot episode I was watching with Mrs. Plainsman, I startled her when I bolted upright:

The villain who kidnaps the heroine's sister is named "Robert Sturm."

Checked the intellectual property brains behind the show -- yup, there he was, VJ Boyd.

Not sure I'll keep up with the show, so let us know if you hear any others.

I think "The Plainsman" would be a good villain name.

Now go wash your hands.

  3. I thought it was a pretty decent show for Network TV I was too busy admiring Arielle Kebbel to notice any subtle Ticket stuff that might have appeared in later episodes.

  4. In Episode 2 (we're behind on the series) there's a character named David Fleming -- no TC references.

  5. I know he wrote for "Justified" due to Dewey Crowe saying "the anus is on you" and other obscure innuendo from The Ticket. Personally, I find it a bit tiresome now, but if others enjoy it, great.

  6. I think Euronymous is correct - the lack of comments on this topic may be proportional to the tiredness of the Ticket references on VJ Boyd shows. Cool at first but meh now..

  7. Do any of us find slowed down audio as funny as the guys on the station do? I've never gotten the bit.

  8. I'd say the slowed-down audio was funny exactly one time. Then it was not.

  9. Unfunny from the very first time they did it.

My theory: These guys' fortune is their voices. They are subconsciously competing for the winning sound all the time. It amuses them when they hear their (mostly) friendly competitors sounding stupid. It's a crappy theory, but I have yet to hear one that explains why Ticket guys think this bit is at all amusing.

  11. I think they think it's funny because it somehow makes them counter cultural when they're not. They think it makes for funny radio as in "hey, listen to George, Craig, and Gordon if they were stoned while broadcasting". Meanwhile, the audience is just yelling at their radio (or streaming device), "please, make it stop!"

  12. Slowed down audio is usually funny the first time. And then it stops. But they keep playing it. Over. And over.

  13. Speaking of tone-deaf segments, I’m getting more than a little put off by the Out of Work Broadcaster of the Day on 3-7. There are so many people whose lives are falling apart right now, but let’s put on a (probably) rich sports person to talk about how crazy these times are for them. I like Bob and Corby and am sure these guests mean well, but the whole thing just feels off to me. I’m not saying some of these guests aren’t entertaining, but maybe rename the segment to something that doesn’t conflate them with people who are, you know, actually out of work because of this.

  14. I heard a bit of the network show that they are going with now last night & the big segment he had was "What athlete or team is affected most by this pandemic." He was lamenting how it would effect someone like Lebron who might not get a shot at another title & I thought that was perhaps the most tone deaf thing I'd heard thus far given what so many other people are going through right now.
