Here's How Little I Have to Post About

The Confessor will recognize this as an entirely burnt post intended to let you know I'm still out here and still providing the anchor for your trenchant Ticket commentary in your offerings below.

Here it is:

Jake Kemp:  He reads the ad copy put in front of him.  This is not a criticism of Jake.  This is a criticism of whoever writes the ad copy.

I speak of the ad copy for All-Pro Foundation Repair.  As this column has pointed out, one should never buy a house from a Ticket host, because they've all had foundation problems.  (Never, Never, No, Never, No, No, Never -- and I Mean Ever -- Buy a House from a Ticket Host)   Now, instead, they all say "we've all had reason to call" All-Pro.

Even new host Jake.  Apparently the moment you're elevated to Tier One, your foundation starts to get wavy and shifty and doors stick and paint cracks.

That's OK.  Never hurts to have your foundation checked on this supposedly difficult North Texas soil.  Although how homes have stable swimming pools but can't seem to have basements or sound foundations in this area is beyond me.

That's not my current issue.  It is:

During the latest ad, Jake says something like this:

"But what really sets All-Pro Foundation Repair apart, though, is  .  .  .  ."

No.

Just, no.

You can't say "but" and also "though."

It has to be either:

"But what sets All-Pro Foundation Repair apart is  .  .  .  ."

OR

"What sets All-Pro Foundation Repair apart, though, is  .  .  .  ."

Jeez.  An absolutely nothing moment, but drives me nuts.  Ad copy guys:  Jake has a Master's Degree in Communications.  Give the man correct copy to read.

And there you have the most vivid thought I've had about The Ticket in a while.

Wait, here's a couple more less-vivid thoughts:

I like Jake and Dan 12-3.  The show continues to warm.   Dan still has the occasional hissy moment, but Jake's good at handling them and overall I think Dan has upped his game.

I like Bob, Corby, and Danny 3-7.  Everyone is settling in nicely, I think.  Corby's calmed down, we're hearing less bonehead social commentary, and Danny has perked up.   Both Danny and Corby seem to be speaking with greater care in the presence of Bob's thoughtfulness and general niceness.

There you go.

Thank you for shopping at My Ticket Confession.

  1. A pet peeve of mine. "I've been using XYZ lawn care for years." I don't believe it.

  2. Yeah, it’s obvious the Ticket hosts are shills. Do you really think George and Gordon like Raising Cane’s Chicken fingers *that* much? I mean it’s okay, but chances of diarrhea after eating there is 50/50 for me. Do we really believe Bob and his family enjoys Rosa’s Cafe as he claims they do (btw, that isn’t a “cafe” by the strict definition)? It’s so spare.

Do you think any of hosts have ever used Soils Alive even once? No. Still, Corby does get free loaners from Moss BMW, Bob and Dan (did) get loaners from Grapevine Ford, etc. But, overall, the live spots are BS and everybody knows it. It’s pretty sad, actually.

  3. P-man, yes, astute observation on the but...though situation. That one has gotten by me, but one that makes me crazy (not just from Ticket hosts - I hear it seemingly everywhere these days) is something along the lines of "7 A.M. in the morning" or something that that. It is completely redundant as your other example. It's either A.M. or in the morning. To have both is redundant.

Thank you for allowing me a safe place to vent.

  4. I had All-Pro out to my house to talk about foundation issues. The guy asked how I heard about them, and I said, "The Ticket." He said, "Yeah, we get a lot of business from them." Anyhoo, I had some foundation issues and the guy gave me a quote. It wasn't five or six quotes for the five or six (or three? or ten?) different ways they can fix your foundation...because, you know, that's their USP. It was just an estimate for however many number of piers he thought would be involved.

I don't know anything about foundation repair, but I did find it odd that there was no discussion of the wondrous variety of options they might bring to the table to solve my problem.

  5. David, did you get your "free" evaluation report (which you only get it you sign up)?

  6. Euronymous: I have no problem with them being shills. They get paid because of advertisements. If you own a trucking company, you get paid by moving loads from point A to point B. If you are a doctor, you get paid for treating patients. Radio guys feed their families because Cain's and D&M Leasing and several other companies pay money for someone to say nice things about their companies on the radio. I, as a listener, still get to make up my own mind. Nobody is holding a gun to my head. So let the hosts talk about those places.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Oh, I get it. It's what pays the bills and it's part of their job to promote whatever the sales team can drum up for clients. I'm certainly in no position to "stop them", either. I'm just pointing out that probably 99.9% of the listening audience is aware of what the real situation is in terms of promo spots. Nobody is holding a gun to me head, either (yet).

  8. I have used All-Pro several times. First few times they came out, studied the issue and said no repairs needed at that time. Finally they did have to perform repairs. I had no issue with them and think they're one of the more reputable advertisers on the Ticket. At least they're not Bart Reagor, Jonathan Lock, etc.

  9. Punching out on all Ticket social-unrest coverage and commentary today.

Comments on same are not prohibited but are discouraged, and will receive heightened scrutiny for Ticket-centricity, civility, and the usual highly subjective factors that inspire me to bounce comments.

  10. Just curious but why are you not interested in hearing what our guys have to say about the most important issue of our time?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Surly, it is a fair question.

I listen to The Ticket to avoid listening to what anyone has to say about the most important issues of our time.

With the dubious blessing of everyone having their say about everything everywhere, I seek refuge from the 90 percent of it that is ignorant nonsense by listening to our guys.

I contribute my own ignorant nonsense about those issues on other sites I maintain and to which I contribute. I like my Ticket oblivious, and try to keep this site that way as well.

  12. I tend to agree with the plainsman. However, I don't blame the ticket for talking about this, especially with no sports going on.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well put Plainsman. I'm of the same mindset so it'll be a week or so of sparse Ticket listening unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  14. dark, I don't blame The Ticket, either. It's just far less compelling listening than other sources for the same stuff.

The hosts are caught in a bind, especially, as Tom says, where there's not much going on in the world of sports, but even when there is: If they ignore events of huge national import, they come off as lacking empathy and awareness. When they address them, they come off as lacking knowledge and any interesting perspective.

So I sympathize. But I don't tune in The Ticket to feel sorry for the stuck-in-the-middle hosts.

Result: More MTC posts about ads.

Where have you gone, Kelly McClure? The Confessor turns his lonely eyes to you.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Of course, the Ticket hosts are shills; those ads pay their salaries. I don't blame them for it; it's smart business. However, I generally avoid their advertisers after using A1 Air for an air conditioning issue several years ago. We just needed Freon replacement, but the guy wouldn't leave unless I bought a whole new system. I finally told him to get lost. Never again.

I'm with the guy who talked about Raising Canes: ate there once, and had an upset stomach all afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It would be shameful if The Ticket didn't comment on the current issues. The mothership is in the heart of the city, and they are important figures in DFW culture. Not commenting on the weekend would be absolutely irresponsible.

  18. Touching upon the end of the last thread and this one: I love this site. Ahem, plain, and simple. Been a commenter and contributor (had two comments turned into posts/articles) since it first went live back in the Hee Hoo days. I probably commented in the inaugural thread that Grubes initiated lo those (has it been, can it have been?) 12 years ago. I hope this thing keeps on truckin' for years to come. Indeed, I hope it's still alive long after The Ticket is gone. Those middle years need to be marked and archived. MTC is in a sense a social history, a listener's history of The Little One. Of course, here's where the "but" makes its telegraphed appearance. But I too have run out of things to say. What else is there? With Rhyner's departure (more on him later), The Ticket is irrevocably changed. And with the pandemic, while (I hope) not irrevocably changed, the station itself has in many ways evinced itself not to be as central in many of our lives as we thought. I know that applies to me, at least. Truth is, I rarely if ever listen anymore. The few times I do turn in I'm either bombarded with socio-political HSOs that I (like Plainsman) am trying to escape (and yes, I agree that it's their right and, really, their job to discuss these matters) or I hear 3/4ths of the hosts incessantly talking about "docking." (ESPECIALLY the 50 something Dan.) I'm sorry, but it's just not that funny. But...that's nitpicking on my part. The real issue at hand is that I've moved on from The Ticket. I have. I cherish my memories of those first 6 years; they were truly special. I really did stay up all night that Sunday listening to the loop. I heard Spirit break through the sudden silence and moments later followed Skip's oddball voice and bizarre cadencing and off we went. Magic. Honest to goodness magic. The middle years were fantastic, too: The addition of BaD, Norm, the addition of Danny, etc. Great radio, must-hear stuff. Sure, it wasn't as urgent as it once was, but still, fantastic stuff. And then Mike and George started bands. And then Greggo Hee Hoo'd. The only good out of either of those things was MTC.

PT and TBDs, say what? Yes. It was at that juncture when Rhyner began to check out. He was on top of the DFW radio world and couldn't go any higher (Hell, he was a pathbreaker for the entire genre, market be damned). He also just turned 50 and was at the time unbeknownst to us P1s) in the middle of marital breakdown "go ahead and give it to me" (couldn't help myself there). Here is where disinterested, checked out Mike made his debut. He may say it was Hee Hoo related; I contend while that might've been a component, it wasn't the whole enchilada. He was in full midlife crisis and his red sports car was getting back into the cover band scene (which is the only scene he ever was a part of), the nightlife scene, and the dating scene. Lot of balls in the air. This is also when Corby became CORBY. Once Greggo morphed into Hee Hoo, CORBY was named cohost and we know the rest of the story (h/t P. Harvey). From that point of departure we've had 12 years of a slo-burn alighting of the Mothership back to terra firma...culminating with Rhyner's faux Irish goodbye and the ensuing musical chairs. Yes, I agree with Plainsman that the new lineups from noon to 7 are just fine. Just. Fine. There's no magic now and neither will there ever be again. At least not for me. As I said, I've moved on. Moved on from something that hasn't existed for a long long long while now. Both The Ticket as I knew it and myself as I was in my younger days. So, yeah, I get it, Plainsman. But. I sure hope you don't shutter this place. Even though I'm no longer a P1 (man, I can't believe I just wrote that true statement...that it IS a true statement...first time I've admitted it to myself), I'll stop by and shop at MTC every now and again. So long, and thanks for all the Ticket.

  22. Yeah, what about Bob? (see what I did there?)

Also, what's the 411 with Kelly McClure? I don't really remember the spots ...

  23. I agree James. That Bob surfaced a time or two before, when Dan would allow it. We saw some of that in the days before and after his family adopted Justin.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think we're in a world right now where normally apolitical people are finding it necessary to be political.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Guess we'll never know what Bob said.

I tuned in The Hardline briefly and heard Corby cueing up an account of how he was going to tell his adolescent son how his generation "had to do better" than Corby's.

    All-time record out.

  26. I like to call it the "Beto Effect." Performative, to the nth degree; substantive, not on your life. Sophia! Sophia!...wherefore art thou, Sophia?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Bob pinned it on his twitter feed

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Plainsman
I can't speak for James but I am guessing he is referring to Bob applying his Christian faith to the discussion of race. Personally I thought it sounded like a regurgitation of the same talking points I had heard all day. I had been listening since 5:30 and maybe I was tuning him out. I was definitely tuning out Corby and Danny.

I did not enjoy Corby's story of trying to overcome his white guilt. I really don't believe that when a black family moved into his neighborhood young Corby's reaction was "finally."

Just my opinion. Listening gets harder after 20 years but it's a tough habit to break.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yesterday I had the opportunity to listen to THL for the first time in weeks, as I was in my car during afternoon drive for the the first time in about 1.5 months. I heard the first part of Corby's story about talking to his kids, but got to my destination before he got very far into it. I did, however, get to hear Danny's childhood tale later on. Very moving and well told story, IMO, but one thing really jumped out at me.

For those that missed it, the summary is that he spent K and 1st grade in Memphis. Was assigned a book report on MLK. His dad had some strong negative opinions on MLK that young Danny then shared with his African-American teacher. The teacher handled it well, and instead of criticizing his father's opinions actually stated that he had the right to his opinion but Danny could form different ones, and that was OK. Danny basically said that had she gone the other way and had talked about how wrong and short-sided his dad's opinion was, that he would have dug in his heels because she was criticizing the man he loved.

What I wondered the whole time I was listening was if he, and Corby who praised the story, let any of that sink in and reflect on how they treat those with differing political opinions. I know they have been better as of late, but I still recall all the "holier-than-thou" opinions they've had in the past. I really hope they do some personal reflection on their own handling of things based on this story.

    ReplyDelete
  30. LOL @ The Plainsman's comment's re Corby (9:12pm). I did hear a bit of Bob from a couple of days ago. He was talking about religion in a vague manner and used "man" more after each sentence than Wavy Gravy.

  31. @Euro: Applause for Wavy Gravy reference.

  34. Plainsman:
Sorry, I just now am able to reply to your question about my comment.
Bob has generally been known to be the guy who would avoid heavy topics on air, mostly being serious when talking about the draft or some obscure hockey stats, but jovial when the topic is anything else. He has stayed away from discussing politics or potentially divisive subjects. But beginning late last week, he's seemed to be very affected by the Floyd killing and subsequent related events. And he's sounded dang-near guilty about being an affluent white Christian. Well, not guilty for being one, but saying that since affluent white Christians have more power, they should lead the way when it comes to change. And he's not leaving his status as a Christian as a side dish, either. It's been the entree each time I have heard him talk about it these past few days. Christians are supposed to be the salt and light, as Jesus says, and Bob is making it clear that we could do better. He's not just retreading trite stuff about white guilt. He's saying we should be agents of positive change in the world, and we're not taking advantage of the opportunity to do so. (I say "we" because I also am a white Christian, though not affluent in comparison to Bob).
Anyway, it's a side I have not heard from Bob before. I welcome it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just listened to Bob's participation in the crucifixion of Drew Brees and I am sad to report that he has totally gone over to the dark side. My hopes of him saving 3-7 are dashed.

  39. I'm not white or black. I've heard nothing but white guilt this whole week especially the morning show. It's been kind of hard to listen. If they really wanted to put their money where their mouth is they'd put a show representative of their diverse listener base and the whole DFW area as a whole. That wouldn't fit their interests now would it? The last time they had one was The Hot Spot, and that was what, 20 years ago? So I can live without their holier than thou points.

  46. P-man - Glad you opened this thread back up. I will refrain from posting my thoughts that I sent you via private e-mail, especially as the situation has moved on and my musings are not so much "timely" now.

In regards to DD's 10:01 post, I heard a little of the hardLine (not a sp)speak of this. I guess my only thought is will Nascar identify the person who went overboard with the observation / accusation? Someone evidently was totally too PC to identify a rope tied into a loop in order to be able to grab it easy versus a noose. The old man in me thinks maybe a younger person who has zero experience with day-to-day shop issues. On a darker note maybe it was just someone trying to cause some SH$T.

As far as my day-to-day listening, I am tuning out more. My views vis-a-vis Gordon Keith may be known to some on this site. I grant that in many ways he is a genius. But when he goes down his sexual fetish rabbit holes, trying to pull George off-sides, each of his appearances start with a "normal" topic and then it descends into Todd Gordon Keith going sexually south, I. AM. OUT. So now just changing channels in the car and in the office. This means that I don't plug back in, for example, after the 8:40 bit. I am pretty much gone until 3:00 p.m.

My history with the Hardline. Mike and Greggo were gold. Being out here in East Texas there were times when I pulled off on the shoulder of the highway to listen to something because I had good reception where I stopped. Did not trust going down another mile and losing reception. This happened a lot during the "He Who" days.

Now, I am punching out more and more with Bob's 30-45 second lead up to a question or eventual point. My day now ends at 6:30; no SturmCenter for me. (But I usually tune back in for L4G and the concert calendar on Fridays.)

My next life will be to become a stand-up comedian. My whole standup will be telling L4G jokes. These jokes are working great with the girls at Hooters.

Stay Hard, Keep Jamming.... and we'll see ya'.

RIP Jon Garner, long time P1. We'll get you a spot in a 3BD apartment in the sky.

  54. I posted this on reddit a few mins ago but re-posting here:

Consistently solid stories with a little mystery. Has a very relaxed disposition and good-natured. Funny of course and underrated one-liners. Good taste in music. Likes to party/have a good time and it's very clear everyone likes hanging out with him. Creates funny bits. Can hold his own in sports discussions. Still has the 25% argumentative gene that's necessary to mix it up and can present opposing viewpoints.

Here's to you, sleeping giant Sea Cow. Don't ever leave. Hope you get to host soon.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Surly: Thanks for the info. I thought Koko was entering Double Fake Tiger territory anyway (i.e., tired bit at this point), but it did make me a little sad that he called in *twice* this morning, apparently not getting the hint.

512p1: I'm with you on Mike Sirois. Here's what I really wonder, though: Could he handle the day-in, day-out of a regular hosting gig? Frankly, I don't know how any of those guys do it--especially the Musers, for a couple of decades, with 4.5 hours to kill, without taking calls, and never bogging down on a topic--but Sirois seems like he might be especially ill-suited to that grind. I do think he's great, though.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I've enjoyed the "Sean Michael Show" this week. It's been entertaining. I'm not a big Peter Welpton fan, but he's been okay.

As far as Ticket listening, I'll listen until about 8:30 or so and I'm out for the rest of the day. The Norm and D Invasion is replaced by Amazon Music Unlimited and then it's on to other things. New BaD Radio does not interest me nor does 3-7 in the least. Still, The Ticket is getting about 2 and a half hours out of me each day they broadcast. I guess that's something.

PS I like Sirois a lot, too, but he probably has a limited upside unless he's paired with the right person. For instance, Cirque De Sirois isn't exactly 'can't miss radio'. Still, I've always liked him. He seems like a good guy (and does have good taste in music).

  57. It was a noose, and just a noose. More importantly it was again absent the inflammatory background which was assigned to it.

  58. Well, then Gordon is in trouble. Indeed, so are Corby, Danny, Dan, Jake and the station as a whole. Iconoclasm and it's project of seek and destroy purge/erasure in service of purity does not stop until all impurities are expunged. Impurities are essential and therefore once one is stained there is no means by which one can atone and be redeemed. A form of hari kiri is the only decent thing one can do. The Ticket is in trouble. Especially certain personalities; personalities whose on and/or off air antics (from high school, forward) have not always been how shall we say sufficiently sensitive to Otherness.

Pop your popcorn. The previews are almost over and the feature is about to begin.

    It's a reckoning, baby.

  59. Crap.

    ReplyDelete
  60. No. The above is deep-state babble.

    ReplyDelete
  61. No, Surly Bevo, it's not. I know you're still butt hurt that the noose wasn't an act of racism--after all, it ruined a perfect instantiation of The Narrative. But come on man, you're embarrassing yourself here.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Come on, Confessors. Life is too short. We hate political talk on The Ticket and I hate it here. Knock it off. Don't make me take down comments and shut the thread down.

Still mulling over the site. Anniversary approaches.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hear! hear!, Pman. I hope you keep the old girl going, but I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. The truth of the matter is that I find myself listening less and less with each passing week. Frankly, it's no longer that compelling of a listen. A sports talk radio station needs sports to talk about. There's a reason why the Ron and Don Show and stations of that ilk on the whole do not succeed. Due to circumstances beyond its control, The Ticket has been forced to become such a station.

Deep State babble or not, the comment about The Ticket and our current socio-political atmosphere isn't without merit. It's not tinfoil hat stuff to wonder if whether some of our heroes' not so long ago characters, imitations, humorous songs, and youthful indiscretions might come back to bite them. And bite them hard. It's also not out of the realm of possibility that given the current climate The Ticket as a whole could incur the wrath of mob mentality. Whether said wrath is justified or not is another discussion, and one that I don't care to have on MTC. I'm not making a judgment of value here, I'm merely stating affairs as I see them. And yes, I might have poor vision!

One final, related thing. Surly, I don't mind that you are surly. In fact, I enjoy it more often than not. You seem to be a smart cookie. I also don't mind that you are (or at least seem to be) socially/politically progressive. But it is poor form to accuse anyone who holds a different view than yours to be some sort of crypto or not so crypto fascist/racist/etc. Having said that, I do allow that 959am's comment is more puffery than not and 225's is nothing more than trolling.

    ReplyDelete
  64. P-Man,

The dilemma is that circumstances are setting the agenda for how we discuss all things Ticket. No road shows, no fight night, no summer bash, no compound. Just how the virus and racism are affecting the current sports landscape. I'm afraid it's only going to get worse as we approach election season.

Other than actual sports, if and when they begin, the only thing I see on the horizon to break these doldrums is the next ratings book, which should be pretty interesting to slice and dice, and what actually happens when the OGW's countdown ends.
